The transport of classical neurotransmitters into synaptic vesicles generally relies on a H<sup>+</sup> electrochemical gradient (∆μ<sub>H+</sub>). Synaptic vesicle uptake of glutamate depends primarily on the electrical component ∆ψ as the driving force, rather than the chemical component ∆pH.
