Project description:Color vision deficiency (CVD) is a frequent condition that alters color perception to such an extent that many people encounter serious difficulties on their everyday lives. In this work, we present a strategy to analyze the effectiveness of light filters aimed to improve color discriminability of persons with CVD. The calculations are based on a simple model of color discrimination which has been successfully applied to several animal species. We first tested the calculations on three well-known commercial lenses designed for persons with CVD. In agreement with results of clinical studies, the calculations show that the highly colored lenses (VINO® and X-Chrom®) enhance chromaticity contrasts between problematic colors, whereas the more neutral Enchroma® do not provide any benefit. Also, we predict that two light filters proposed in recent works for novel lenses would not improve the performance of the commercial ones. Since the mathematical approach presented in this work enables predictive filter assessment, it opens the door to future research on the design of more effective lenses to improve color discriminability of persons with CVD. The calculations allow for large-scale screening of numerous light filters and different colored stimuli, CVD conditions, light sources, etc.

Project description:Mathematical ability is heritable and related to several genes expressing proteins in the brain. It is unknown, however, which intermediate neural phenotypes could explain how these genes relate to mathematical ability. Here, we examined genetic effects on cerebral cortical volume of 3-6-year-old children without mathematical training to predict mathematical ability in school at 7-9 years of age. To this end, we followed an exploration sample (n = 101) and an independent replication sample (n = 77). We found that ROBO1, a gene known to regulate prenatal growth of cerebral cortical layers, is associated with the volume of the right parietal cortex, a key region for quantity representation. Individual volume differences in this region predicted up to a fifth of the behavioral variance in mathematical ability. Our findings indicate that a fundamental genetic component of the quantity processing system is rooted in the early development of the parietal cortex.

Project description:Although theoretical studies have suggested that working-memory capacity is crucial for academic achievement, few empirical studies have directly investigated the relationship between working-memory capacity and programming ability, and no direct neural evidence has been reported to support this relationship. The present study aimed to fill this gap in the literature. Using a between-subject design, 17 programming novices and 18 advanced students performed an n-back working-memory task. During the experiment, their prefrontal hemodynamic responses were measured using a 48-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device. The results indicated that the advanced students had a higher working-memory capacity than the novice students, validating the relationship between programming ability and working memory. The analysis results also showed that the hemodynamic responses in the prefrontal cortex can be used to discriminate between novices and advanced students. Additionally, we utilized an attention-based convolutional neural network to analyze the spatial domains of the fNIRS signals and demonstrated that the left prefrontal cortex was more important than other brain regions for programming ability prediction. This result was consistent with the results of statistical analysis, which in turn improved the interpretability of neural networks.

Project description:Socioeconomic attainment gaps in mathematical ability are evident before children begin school, and widen over time. Little is known about why early attainment gaps emerge. Two cross-sectional correlational studies were conducted in 2018-2019 with socioeconomically diverse preschoolers, to explore four factors that might explain why attainment gaps arise: working memory, inhibitory control, verbal ability, and frequency of home mathematical activities (N = 304, 54% female; 84% White, 10% Asian, 1% black African, 1% Kurdish, 4% mixed ethnicity). Inhibitory control and verbal ability emerged as indirect factors in the relation between socioeconomic status and mathematical ability, but neither working memory nor home activities did. We discuss the implications this has for future research to understand, and work towards narrowing attainment gaps.

Project description:Mathematical learning difficulties (MLD) refer to a variety of deficits in math skills, typically pertaining to the domains of arithmetic and problem solving. The present study examined the time course of attentional orienting in MLD children with a spatial cueing task, by parametrically manipulating the cue-target onset asynchrony (CTOA). The results of Experiment 1 revealed that, in contrast to typical developing children, the inhibitory aftereffect of attentional orienting - frequently referred to as inhibition of return (IOR) - was not observed in the MLD children, even at the longest CTOA tested (800 ms). However, robust early facilitation effects were observed in the MLD children, suggesting that they have difficulties in attentional disengagement rather than attentional engagement. In a second experiment, a secondary cue was introduced to the cueing task to encourage attentional disengagement and IOR effects were observed in the MLD children. Taken together, the present experiments indicate that MLD children are sluggish in disengaging spatial attention.

Project description:Background and aimsMost studies to date have focused on liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in patients with different chronic liver diseases, and normal LSM is defined based on normal liver function tests or the absence of fibrosis. Very few studies have defined LSM based on completely normal liver biopsies. The current study was done to define the distribution of LSM values in individuals with normal liver biopsies.MethodsAll prospective liver donors presenting to Medanta, the Medicity hospital between September 2020 and September 2021 fulfilling the eligibility criteria were included in this study.ResultsA total of 63 donors (36 females and 27 males) were included in the study, 37 (58.7%) donors had normal liver biopsies, and 26 (41.2%) donors showed the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. LSM values in the normal liver histology group were 5.01 ± 1.99 kPa by the M probe and 5.34 ± 2.25 kPa by the XL probe. Even though the correlation was weak (r = 0.29, P = 0.03), M probe LSM correlated positively with body mass index. There was a good correlation between the LSM measured by the M probe and the XL probe (r = 0.73, P = <0.001).ConclusionsLSM value in the biopsy-proven normal liver histology group was 5.01 ± 1.99 by the M probe and 5.34 ± 2.25 by the XL probe.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess the cross-sectional association between multimorbidity and imaging biomarkers of brain pathology in the population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA).MethodsThe study consisted of 1,449 MCSA participants who were cognitively normal at the time of MRI. A subset of the participants also had (11)C-Pittsburgh compound B (n = 689) and (18)fluorodeoxyglucose (n = 688) PET scans available. Information on multimorbidity (defined as ≥2 chronic conditions) in the 5 years prior to the first imaging study was captured from the medical record using ICD-9 codes for chronic conditions and the Rochester Epidemiology Project medical records linkage system. The cross-sectional association of multimorbidity and imaging biomarkers was examined using logistic and linear regression models.ResultsAmong 1,449 cognitively normal participants (mean age 79 years; 50.9% men), 85.4% had multimorbidity (≥2 chronic conditions). Multimorbidity and severe multimorbidity (≥4 chronic conditions) were associated with abnormal Alzheimer disease (AD) signature meta-region of interest (meta-ROI) (18)F-FDG hypometabolism (odds ratio [OR] 2.03; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10-3.77 and OR 2.22; 95% CI 1.18-4.16, respectively), and with abnormal AD signature MRI cortical thickness (OR 1.53; 95% CI 1.09-2.16 and OR 1.76; 95% CI 1.24-2.51, respectively), but was not associated with amyloid accumulation.ConclusionsMultimorbidity was associated with brain pathology through mechanisms independent of amyloid deposition and such neuronal injury and pathology was present before any symptomatic evidence of cognitive impairment. Longitudinal follow-up will provide insights into potential causal associations of multimorbidity with changes in brain pathology.

Project description:Attention and working memory are intricately related, yet there remain ambiguities in how to best characterize this relationship. In his review, Oberauer formalizes several dimensions for the relationship between attention and working memory, focusing especially on the supporting role of attention during working memory maintenance. In this commentary, we highlight how attention and working memory relate on a broader time scale via trial-to-trial fluctuations. Specifically, we briefly describe evidence and implications of these fluctuations of attention and working memory. A strong link has been shown behaviorally (e.g., interleaved sustained attention and working memory tasks) and neurally (e.g., pre-trial predictors of working memory success), yet fluctuations of attention and working memory are also distinct. Thus, we argue that attention and working memory fluctuate synchronously but not synonymously.

Project description:We study the role of attention and working memory in choices where options are presented sequentially rather than simultaneously. We build a model where a costly attention effort is chosen, which can vary over time. Evidence is accumulated proportionally to this effort and the utility of the reward. Crucially, the evidence accumulated decays over time. Optimal attention allocation maximizes expected utility from final choice; the optimal solution takes the decay into account, so attention is preferentially devoted to later times; but convexity of the flow attention cost prevents it from being concentrated near the end. We test this model with a choice experiment where participants observe sequentially two options. In our data the option presented first is, everything else being equal, significantly less likely to be chosen. This recency effect has a natural explanation with appropriate parameter values in our model of leaky evidence accumulation, where the decline is stronger for the option observed first. Analysis of choice, response time and brain imaging data provide support for the model. Working memory plays an essential role. The recency bias is stronger for participants with weaker performance in working memory tasks. Also activity in parietal areas, coding the stored value in working, declines over time as predicted.
