Report of the Double-Molybdate Phase Cs2Ba(MoO4)2 with a Palmierite Structure and Its Thermodynamic Characterization.

ABSTRACT: The existence of a novel double-molybdate phase with a palmierite-type structure, Cs2Ba(MoO4)2, is revealed in this work, and its structural properties at room temperature have been characterized in detail using X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements. In addition, its thermal stability and thermal expansion are investigated in the temperature range 298-673 K using high-temperature X-ray diffraction, leading to the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient ?V ? 43.0 × 10-6 K-1. The compound's standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K has been obtained using solution calorimetry, which yielded ?fHm°(Cs2Ba(MoO4)2, cr, 298.15 K) = -3066.6 ± 3.1 kJ· mol-1, and its standard entropy at 298.15 K has been derived from low-temperature (2.1-294.3 K) thermal-relaxation calorimetry as Sm°(Cs2Ba(MoO4)2, cr, 298.15 K) = 381.2 ± 11.8 J K-1 mol-1.

Structural and Thermodynamic Investigation of the Perovskite Ba2NaMoO5.5.

Project description:Neutron diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and Raman spectroscopy measurements of the quaternary perovskite phase Ba2NaMoO5.5 have been performed in this work. The cubic crystal structure in space group Fm3?m has been refined using the Rietveld method. X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES) measurements at the Mo K-edge have confirmed the hexavalent state of molybdenum. The local structure of the molybdenum octahedra has been studied in detail using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The Mo-O and Mo-Ba distances have been compared to the neutron diffraction data with good agreement. The coefficient of thermal expansion measured in the temperature range of 303-923 K, using high temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) (?V = 55.8 × 10-6 K), has been determined to be ?2 times higher than that of the barium molybdates BaMoO3 and BaMoO4. Moreover, no phase transition nor melting have been observed, neither by HT-XRD nor Raman spectroscopy nor differential scanning calorimetry, up to 1473 K. Furthermore, the standard enthalpy of formation (?fHm°) for Ba2NaMoO5.5(cr) has been determined to be -(2524.75 ± 4.15) kJ mol-1 at 298.15 K, using solution calorimetry. Finally, the margin for safe operation of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) has been assessed by calculating the threshold oxygen potential needed, in liquid sodium, to form the quaternary compound, following an interaction between irradiated mixed oxide (U,Pu)O2 fuel and sodium coolant.

Electron-injection-engineering induced dual-phase MoO2.8F0.2/MoO2.4F0.6 heterostructure for magnesium storage.

Project description:Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) have received increased attention due to their high volumetric capacity and safety. Nevertheless, the sluggish diffusion kinetics of highly polarized Mg2+ in host lattices severely hinders the development of RMBs. Herein, we report an electron injection strategy for modulating the Mo 4d-orbital splitting manner and first fabricate a dual-phase MoO2.8F0.2/MoO2.4F0.6 heterostructure to accelerate Mg2+ diffusion. The electron injection strategy triggers weak Jahn-Teller distortion in MoO6 octahedra and reorganization of the Mo 4d-orbital, leading to a partial phase transition from orthorhombic phase MoO2.8F0.2 to cubic phase MoO2.4F0.6. As a result, the designed heterostructure generates a built-in electric field, simultaneously improving its electronic conductivity and ionic diffusivity by at least one order of magnitude compared to MoO2.8F0.2 and MoO2.4F0.6. Importantly, the assembled MoO2.8F0.2/MoO2.4F0.6//Mg full cell exhibits a remarkable reversible capacity of 172.5 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, pushing forward the orbital-scale manipulation for high-performance RMBs.

Colloidal Synthesis of Double Perovskite Cs2AgInCl6 and Mn-Doped Cs2AgInCl6 Nanocrystals.

Project description:We show here the first colloidal synthesis of double perovskite Cs2AgInCl6 nanocrystals (NCs) with a control over their size distribution. In our approach, metal carboxylate precursors and ligands (oleylamine and oleic acid) are dissolved in diphenyl ether and reacted at 105 °C with benzoyl chloride. The resulting Cs2AgInCl6 NCs exhibit the expected double perovskite crystal structure, are stable under air, and show a broad spectrum white photoluminescence (PL) with quantum yield of ?1.6 ± 1%. The optical properties of these NCs were improved by synthesizing Mn-doped Cs2AgInCl6 NCs through the simple addition of Mn-acetate to the reaction mixture. The NC products were characterized by the same double perovskite crystal structure, and Mn doping levels up to 1.5%, as confirmed by elemental analyses. The effective incorporation of Mn ions inside Cs2AgInCl6 NCs was also proved by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy. A bright orange emission characterized our Mn-doped Cs2AgInCl6 NCs with a PL quantum yield as high as ?16 ± 4%.

Stability of the Halide Double Perovskite Cs2AgInBr6.

Project description:Cs2AgInBr6 is among the lead-free halide perovskites of interest, predicted by first-principles calculations to be stable with a direct band gap, but there has been only one report of its synthesis. Herein we report the formation of Cs2AgInBr6 thin films through thermal evaporation of CsBr, AgBr, and InBr3 and subsequent annealing between 130 °C and 250 °C. Cs2AgInBr6 appears stable in this temperature range. However, Cs2AgInBr6 thin films are thermodynamically unstable at room temperature, remaining cubic only long enough to be characterized but not long enough to be useful for practical devices. Cs2AgInBr6 decomposed into Cs2AgBr3, Cs3In2Br9, AgBr, and InBr3 upon cooling from 130 °C to 250 °C to room temperature. This conclusion did not depend on illumination, film thickness, annealing environment, or details of the film formation, pointing to an intrinsic thermodynamic instability of the material. Optical absorption measurements may be interpreted as Cs2AgInBr6 having a direct band gap of 1.57 ± 0.1 eV.

Lithium europium(III) molybdate(VI), Li(3.5)Eu(1.5)(MoO(4))(4).

Project description:The title compound, Li(3.5)Eu(1.5)(MoO(4))(4), was prepared by solid-state reactions. The fundamental building units of the structure are LiO(4) polyhedra (site symmetry [Formula: see text]), distorted LiO(6) polyhedra and MoO(4) tetra-hedra, which are further inter-connected via corner-sharing O atoms. One site is occupied by both Li and Eu atoms in a substituent disordered manner (0.25:0.75), and the Li/Eu atoms are coordinated by eight O atoms in a distorted square-antiprismatic manner.

Ultrafast Excited-State Localization in Cs2AgBiBr6 Double Perovskite.

Project description:Cs2AgBiBr6 is a promising metal halide double perovskite offering the possibility of efficient photovoltaic devices based on lead-free materials. Here, we report on the evolution of photoexcited charge carriers in Cs2AgBiBr6 using a combination of temperature-dependent photoluminescence, absorption and optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy. We observe rapid decays in terahertz photoconductivity transients that reveal an ultrafast, barrier-free localization of free carriers on the time scale of 1.0 ps to an intrinsic small polaronic state. While the initially photogenerated delocalized charge carriers show bandlike transport, the self-trapped, small polaronic state exhibits temperature-activated mobilities, allowing the mobilities of both to still exceed 1 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperature. Self-trapped charge carriers subsequently diffuse to color centers, causing broad emission that is strongly red-shifted from a direct band edge whose band gap and associated exciton binding energy shrink with increasing temperature in a correlated manner. Overall, our observations suggest that strong electron-phonon coupling in this material induces rapid charge-carrier localization.

Highly mobile hot holes in Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite.

Project description:Highly mobile hot charge carriers are a prerequisite for efficient hot carrier optoelectronics requiring long-range hot carrier transport. However, hot carriers are typically much less mobile than cold ones because of carrier-phonon scattering. Here, we report enhanced hot carrier mobility in Cs2AgBiBr6 double perovskite. Following photoexcitation, hot carriers generated with excess energy exhibit boosted mobility, reaching an up to fourfold enhancement compared to cold carriers and a long-range hot carrier transport length beyond 200 nm. By optical pump–infrared push-terahertz probe spectroscopy and frequency-resolved photoconductivity measurements, we provide evidence that the conductivity enhancement originates primarily from hot holes with reduced momentum scattering. We rationalize our observation by considering (quasi-)ballistic transport of thermalized hot holes with energies above an energetic threshold in Cs2AgBiBr6. Our findings render Cs2AgBiBr6 as a fascinating platform for studying the fundamentals of hot carrier transport and its exploitation toward hot carrier–based optoelectronic devices.

Scrutinizing the stability and exploring the dependence of thermoelectric properties on band structure of 3d-3d metal-based double perovskites Ba2FeNiO6 and Ba2CoNiO6.

Project description:Through the conventional DFT computation, we have designed new oxide double perovskites Ba2FeNiO6 and Ba2CoNiO6. The structural and thermodynamic stabilities are predicted by optimizing the crystal structure and evaluation of enthalpy of formation, respectively. Then by using the optimized lattice constant, we have explored the different physical properties. The GGA + mBJ electronic band-structure illustrates Ba2FeNiO6 is a half-metal with 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level. While Ba2CoNiO6 shows a ferromagnetic semiconducting nature. The change in the electronic structure when Fe is replaced by Co is explained with the help of the orbital diagram and exchange interaction. The eg-eg hybridization that happens via O-p states is strong because Fe-O-Ni and Co-O-Ni bond angles are strictly 180°. The narrow bandgaps in the semiconducting channels prompted us to analyze the applicability of these materials towards thermoelectric technology. Besides this, we have investigated the dependency of transport properties on electronic band structure. The semiconducting nature in Ba2CoNiO6 results in a significant ZT around 0.8 at room temperature makes it suitable for wasted-energy regeneration.

Efficient Near-Infrared Luminescence Based on Double Perovskite Cs2SnCl6.

Project description:Cs2SnCl6 double perovskite has attracted wide attention as a promising optoelectronic material because of its better stability and lower toxicity than its lead counterparts. However, pure Cs2SnCl6 demonstrates quite poor optical properties, which usually calls for active element doping to realize efficient luminescence. Herein, a facile co-precipitation method was used to synthesize Te4+ and Er3+-co-doped Cs2SnCl6 microcrystals. The prepared microcrystals were polyhedral, with a size distribution around 1-3 μm. Highly efficient NIR emissions at 1540 nm and 1562 nm due to Er3+ were achieved in doped Cs2SnCl6 compounds for the first time. Moreover, the visible luminescence lifetimes of Te4+/Er3+-co-doped Cs2SnCl6 decreased with the increase in the Er3+ concentration due to the increasing energy transfer efficiency. The strong and multi-wavelength NIR luminescence of Te4+/Er3+-co-doped Cs2SnCl6 originates from the 4f→4f transition of Er3+, which was sensitized by the spin-orbital allowed 1S0→3P1 transition of Te4+ through a self-trapped exciton (STE) state. The findings suggest that ns2-metal and lanthanide ion co-doping is a promising method to extend the emission range of Cs2SnCl6 materials to the NIR region.

Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Cs2TeI6 Thin Films for Optoelectronics.

Project description:Alternatives to lead- and tin-based perovskites for photovoltaics and optoelectronics are sought that do not suffer from the disadvantages of toxicity and low device efficiency of present-day materials. Here we report a study of the double perovskite Cs2TeI6, which we have synthesized in the thin film form for the first time. Exhaustive trials concluded that spin coating CsI and TeI4 using an antisolvent method produced uniform films, confirmed as Cs2TeI6 by XRD with Rietveld analysis. They were stable up to 250 °C and had an optical band gap of ∼1.5 eV, absorption coefficients of ∼6 × 104 cm-1, carrier lifetimes of ∼2.6 ns (unpassivated 200 nm film), a work function of 4.95 eV, and a p-type surface conductivity. Vibrational modes probed by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy showed resonances qualitatively consistent with DFT Phonopy-calculated spectra, offering another route for phase confirmation. It was concluded that the material is a candidate for further study as a potential optoelectronic or photovoltaic material.
