ABSTRACT: Sixteen new species of the genus Meleonoma Meyrick, 1914 from Hainan Island, China are described: M. apicicurvata Wang, sp. nov., M. apicirectangula Wang, sp. nov., M. bicuspidata Wang, sp. nov., M. bidentata Wang, sp. nov., M. conica Wang, sp. nov., M. hainanensis Wang, sp. nov., M. latiunca Wang, sp. nov., M. linearis Wang, sp. nov., M. magnidentata Wang, sp. nov., M. ornithorrhyncha Wang, sp. nov., M. parilis Wang, sp. nov., M. pectinalis Wang, sp. nov., M. puncticulata Wang, sp. nov., M. quadritaeniata Wang, sp. nov., M. robustispina Wang, sp. nov. and M. rostellata Wang, sp. nov. Images of adult dorsal habitus and genitalia of the new species are provided. A map showing the collecting localities and photos of the habitat where the specimens were collected are provided, along with two maps showing the distribution of each species.

Project description:Two new species of Meleonoma Meyrick, 1914a (Gelechioidea, Xyloryctidae) from southeastern China are described: Meleonoma foliiformis Yin, sp. nov. from Guangxi Province and M. projecta Yin, sp. nov. from Fujian Province. Adults and male genitalia are described in detail. A list of the Meleonoma species occurring in China is given. The taxonomic position of Meleonoma has been unstable, and under debate. Nonetheless, it is here tentatively placed in the family Xyloryctidae, following the latest molecular phylogenetic study concerning this genus.

Among them, twelve species are described as new: Promalactis bifurciprocessa sp. n., Promalactis convexa sp. n., Promalactis papillata sp. n., Promalactis quadratitabularis sp. n., Promalactis quadriloba sp. n., Promalactis ramispinea sp. n., Promalactis scorpioidea sp. n., Promalactis serpenticapitata sp. n., Promalactis similiconvexa sp. n., Promalactis spinosicornuta sp. n., Promalactis strumifera sp. n. and Promalactis uncinispinea sp. n.; the previously unknown male of Promalactis dimolybda Meyrick, 1935 and female of Promalactis flavescens Wang, Zheng & Li, 1997 are described for the first time; Promalactis albipunctata Park & Park, 1998 and Promalactis dierli Lvovsky, 2000 are newly recorded for China. Adults and genitalia are illustrated.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Meleonoma mirabilis (Wang 2003) (Lepidoptera: Autostichidae).

Project description:The mitogenome of Meleonoma mirabilis was determined in this study. It was 15,268 bps long and strongly AT biased. It harbored 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs, and 1 non-coding control region (334 bps). BI phylogenetic analysis based on 13 concatenated PCGs from 24 moth species indicated that M. mirabilis was clustered in the family Autostichidae, which was consistent with the latest phylogenetic study.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Periacma orthiodes Meyrick, 1894 (Lepidoptera: Autostichidae).

Project description:The complete mitogenome of Periacma orthiodes Meyrick, 1894 was determined in this study. It was 15,306 bps long and strongly AT biased. It consisted of 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs and 1 non-coding control region (371 bps). Most PCGs used the typical ATN start codon, except for cox1. Four genes (cox1, cox2, nad4 and nad5) used truncated stop codons (a single T or TA) rather than the commonly used TAA or TAG. All tRNAs, excluding TrnS1, folded into the iconic cloverleaf structure. ML phylogenetic tree built on 13 PCGs from P. orthiodes and another 28 species in Gelechioidea demonstrated that the genus Periacma was a member of the family Autostichidae, which was consistent with the newest phylogenetic study.

The genus Erechthias Meyrick of Ascension Island, including discovery of a new brachypterous species (Lepidoptera, Tineidae).

Project description:One previously named and two new species of the tineid genus Erechthias Meyrick are described and illustrated from the small, remote, mid-Atlantic Ascension Island. With these additions the Lepidoptera fauna of Ascension now totals 38 known species. Little is known regarding the biology of the two new species of Erechthias, and none of the species has been reared from larvae from Ascension. Erechthias minuscula (Walsingham) is a widespread, largely pantropical species first described from the West Indies. Larvae of Erechthias minuscula are known to be scavengers on a wide variety of dead plant material. Erechthias ascensionae,new species, is one of two species of Erechthias now known to be endemic to the island. The other endemic species, Erechthias grayi, new species, is further remarkable in having wing reduction occurring in both sexes. It is one of the few species of Lepidoptera known where this extreme of brachyptery involving both sexes has evolved. The larvae of Erechthias grayi are believed to be lichenivorous, and larval cases suspected to represent this species are illustrated.

The latter two species are also associated with Glochidionwrightii. Photographs of adults and genital structures are provided.
