<i>Borrelia burgdorferi</i> causes Lyme disease, the most common tick-transmitted illness in North America. When <i>Ixodes scapularis</i> feed on an infected vertebrate host, spirochetes enter the tick gut along with the bloodmeal and colonize the vector.
