Synthesis and Characterization of 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks for Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen.

ABSTRACT: The reaction of Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O and Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O with the bipyridyl dicarboxylate ligand H₂bpydc (2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid) afforded two porous metal organic frameworks [Cd(bpydc)₂(DMF)₂·2DMF]_n (JMS-3) and [Zn(bpydc)(DMF)·DMF]_n (JMS-4). X-ray diffraction studies revealed that both JMS-3 and JMS-4 crystallize in the monoclinic crystal. The MOFs possess 2D interdigited networks with (sql) topology. Sorption studies showed that the activated phase of JMS-3 had CO₂ volumetric uptakes of 26.50 and 30.89 cm³ (STP) g^-1 (1.18 and 1.39 mmol g^-1) whist JMS-4 gave 10.96 and 16.08 cm³ (STP) g^-1 (0.49 and 0.71 mmol g^-1) at 298 and 273 K respectively.

Monolithic metal-organic frameworks for carbon dioxide separation.

Project description:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is both a primary contributor to global warming and a major industrial impurity. Traditional approaches to carbon capture involve corrosive and energy-intensive processes such as liquid amine absorption. Although adsorptive separation has long been a promising alternative to traditional processes, up to this point there has been a lack of appropriate adsorbents capable of capturing CO2 whilst maintaining low regeneration energies. In the context of CO2 capture, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained much attention in the past two decades as potential materials. Their tuneable nature allows for precise control over the pore size and chemistry, which allows for the tailoring of their properties for the selective adsorption of CO2. While many candidate materials exist, the amount of research into material shaping for use in industrial processes has been limited. Traditional shaping strategies such as pelletisation involve the use of binders and/or mechanical processes, which can have a detrimental impact on the adsorption properties of the resulting materials or can result in low-density structures with low volumetric adsorption capacities. Herein, we demonstrate the use of a series of monolithic MOFs (monoUiO-66, monoUiO-66-NH2 & monoHKUST-1) for use in gas separation processes.

A New Member of the Metal-Porphyrin Frameworks Family: Structure, Physicochemical Properties, Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide Adsorption.

Project description:A novel holmium-based porous metal-porphyrin framework, {(H3 O+ )[Ho(H2 TPPS)]- ⋅ 4H2 O}n (denoted as UPJS-17), was synthesised by hydrothermal reaction. Structural analysis reveals, that UPJS-17 has a three-dimensional open framework. The framework is negatively charged and the negative charge is compensated by hydronium cation. The compound showed no N2 adsorption but the Ar, CO2 and H2 . From the argon adsorption, the surface area of ~150 m2 g-1 was determined. Carbon dioxide adsorption was measured at various temperatures (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 °C) and the compound showed the highest adsorption capacity (at 0 °C) of 7.0 wt % of CO2 . From the carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms the isosteric heat of 56,5 kJ mol-1 was determined. Hydrogen adsorption was studied at -196 °C with hydrogen uptake of 2.1 wt % at 1 bar.

Effect of Water and Carbon Dioxide on the Performance of Basolite Metal-Organic Frameworks for Methane Adsorption.

Project description:MOFs are potential adsorbents for methane separation from nitrogen, including recovery in diluted streams. However, water and carbon dioxide can seriously affect the adsorption performance. Three commercial MOFs, basolite C300, F300, and A100, were studied under similar conditions to fugitive methane streams, such as water (75 and 100% relative humidity) and carbon dioxide (0.33%) presence in a fixed bed. The presence of available open metal sites of copper (Cu2+) and aluminum (Al3+) in the case of basolite C300 and A100, respectively, constitutes a clear drawback under humid conditions, since water adsorbs on them, leading to significant methane capacity losses. Surprisingly, basolite F300 is the most resistant material due to its amorphous structure, which hinders water access. The combination of carbon dioxide and water creates a synergy that seriously affects basolite A100, closely related to its breathing effect, but does not constitute an important issue for basolite C300 and F300.

Cooperative adsorption of carbon disulfide in diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Over one million tons of CS2 are produced annually, and emissions of this volatile and toxic liquid, known to generate acid rain, remain poorly controlled. As such, materials capable of reversibly capturing this commodity chemical in an energy-efficient manner are of interest. Recently, we detailed diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks capable of selectively capturing CO2 through a cooperative insertion mechanism that promotes efficient adsorption-desorption cycling. We therefore sought to explore the ability of these materials to capture CS2 through a similar mechanism. Employing crystallography, spectroscopy, and gas adsorption analysis, we demonstrate that CS2 is indeed cooperatively adsorbed in N,N-dimethylethylenediamine-appended M2(dobpdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Zn; dobpdc4- = 4,4'-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate), via the formation of electrostatically paired ammonium dithiocarbamate chains. In the weakly thiophilic Mg congener, chemisorption is cleanly reversible with mild thermal input. This work demonstrates that the cooperative insertion mechanism can be generalized to other high-impact target molecules.

Metal-Organic Frameworks to Metal/Metal Oxide Embedded Carbon Matrix: Synthesis, Characterization and Gas Sorption Properties.

Project description:Three isostructural metal-organic frameworks, (MOFs), [Fe(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (1), [Al(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (2), and [In(OH)(1,4-NDC)] (3) have been synthesized hydrothermally by using 1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate (1,4-NDC) as a linker. The MOFs were characterized using various techniques and further used as precursor materials for the synthesis of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles inserted in a carbon matrix through a simple thermal conversion method. The newly synthesized carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and BET analysis. The results showed that the MOF-derived carbon composite materials maintained the morphology of the original MOF upon carbonization, and confirmed the insertion of metal/metal oxide particles in the carbon matrix.

Coordination-bond-directed synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks from metal-organic frameworks as templates.

Project description:Controlled synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) remains challenging, because the self-assembly of ligands is not only directed by weak hydrogen bonds, but also affected by other competing van der Waals forces. Herein, we demonstrate the coordination-bond-directed synthesis of HOFs using a preformed metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. A MOF (CuI-TTFTB) based on two-coordinated CuI centers and tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (TTFTB) ligands was initially synthesized. CuI-TTFTB was subsequently oxidized to the intermediate (CuII-TTFTB) and hydrated to the HOF product (TTFTB-HOF). Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation was realized throughout the MOF-to-HOF transformation so that the evolution of structures was directly observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation and hydration of the CuI center are critical to breaking the Cu-carboxylate bonds, while the synergic corbelled S⋯S and π⋯π interactions in the framework ensured stability of materials during post-synthetic modification. This work not only provided a strategy to guide the design and discovery of new HOFs, but also linked the research of MOFs and HOFs.

2D/3D Copper-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Electrochemical Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively used as modified materials of electrochemical sensors in the food industry and agricultural system. In this work, two kinds of copper-based MOFs (Cu-MOFs) with a two dimensional (2D) sheet-like structure and three dimensional (3D) octahedral structure for H2O2 detection were synthesized and compared. The synthesized 2D and 3D Cu-MOFs were modified on the glassy carbon electrode to fabricate electrochemical sensors, respectively. The sensor with 3D Cu-MOF modification (HKUST-1/GCE) presented better electrocatalytic performance than the 2D Cu-MOF modified sensor in H2O2 reduction. Under optimal conditions, the prepared sensor displayed two wide linear ranges of 2 μM-3 mM and 3-25 mM and a low detection limit of 0.68 μM. In addition, the 3D Cu-MOF sensor exhibited good selectivity and stability. Furthermore, the prepared HKUST-1/GCE was used for the detection of H2O2 in milk samples with a high recovery rate, indicating great potential and applicability for the detection of substances in food samples. This work provides a convenient, practical, and low-cost route for analysis and extends the application range of MOFs in the food industry, agricultural and environmental systems, and even in the medical field.

Diatomite-Metal-Organic Framework Composite with Hierarchical Pore Structures for Adsorption/Desorption of Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor.

Project description:Distinctive Cr-MOF@Da composites have been constructed using chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and diatomite (Da). The new materials have hierarchical pore structures containing micropores, mesopores and macropores. We have synthesized various morphologies of the MOF compound Cr-MIL-101 to combine with Da in a one-pot reaction step. These distinctive hierarchical pore networks within Cr-MIL-101@Da enable exceptional adsorptive performance for a range of molecules, including hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapor. Selectivity for H2 or CO2 can be moderated by the morphology and composition of the Cr-MIL-101 included in the Cr-MOF@Da composite. The encapsulation and growth of Cr-MIL-101 within and on Da have resulted in excellent water retention as well as high thermal and hydrolytic stability. In some cases, Cr-MIL-101@Da composite materials have demonstrated increased thermal stability compared with that of Cr-MIL-101; for example, decomposition temperatures >340 ℃ can be achieved. Furthermore, these Cr-MIL-101@Da composites retain structural and morphological integrity after 60 cycles of repeated hydration/dehydration, and after storage for more than one year. These characteristics are difficult to achieve with many MOF materials, and thus suggest that MOF-mineral composites show high potential for practical gas storage and water vapor capture.

Polycatenated 2D Hydrogen-Bonded Binary Supramolecular Organic Frameworks (SOFs) with Enhanced Gas Adsorption and Selectivity.

Project description:Controlled assembly of two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) has been demonstrated through a binary strategy in which 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)pyridyl)naphthalene (2), generated in situ by oxidative dehydrogenation of 1,4-bis-(4-(3,5-dicyano-2,6-dipyridyl)dihydropyridyl)naphthalene (1), is coupled in a 1:1 ratio with terphenyl-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic acid (3; to form SOF-8), 5,5'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)diisophthalic acid (4; to form SOF-9), or 5,5'-bis-(azanediyl)-oxalyl-diisophthalic acid (5; to form SOF-10). Complementary O-H···N hydrogen bonds assemble 2D 63-hcb (honeycomb) subunits that pack as layers in SOF-8 to give a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network with parallel channels hosting guest DMF (DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) molecules. SOF-9 and SOF-10 feature supramolecular networks of 2D → 3D inclined polycatenation of similar hcb layers as those in SOF-8. Although SOF-8 suffers framework collapse upon guest removal, the polycatenated frameworks of SOF-9 and SOF-10 exhibit excellent chemical and thermal stability, solvent/moisture durability, and permanent porosity. Moreover, their corresponding desolvated (activated) samples SOF-9a and SOF-10a display enhanced adsorption and selectivity for CO2 over N2 and CH4. The structures of these activated compounds are well described by quantum chemistry calculations, which have allowed us to determine their mechanical properties, as well as identify their soft deformation modes and a large number of low-energy vibration modes. These results not only demonstrate an effective synthetic platform for porous organic molecular materials stabilized solely by primary hydrogen bonds but also suggest a viable means to build robust SOF materials with enhanced gas uptake capacity and selectivity.

Synergistic electroreduction of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide on bimetallic layered conjugated metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Highly effective electrocatalysts promoting CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is extremely desirable to produce value-added chemicals/fuels while addressing current environmental challenges. Herein, we develop a layer-stacked, bimetallic two-dimensional conjugated metal-organic framework (2D c-MOF) with copper-phthalocyanine as ligand (CuN4) and zinc-bis(dihydroxy) complex (ZnO4) as linkage (PcCu-O8-Zn). The PcCu-O8-Zn exhibits high CO selectivity of 88%, turnover frequency of 0.39?s-1 and long-term durability (>10?h), surpassing thus by far reported MOF-based electrocatalysts. The molar H2/CO ratio (1:7 to 4:1) can be tuned by varying metal centers and applied potential, making 2D c-MOFs highly relevant for syngas industry applications. The contrast experiments combined with operando spectroelectrochemistry and theoretical calculation unveil a synergistic catalytic mechanism; ZnO4 complexes act as CO2RR catalytic sites while CuN4 centers promote the protonation of adsorbed CO2 during CO2RR. This work offers a strategy on developing bimetallic MOF electrocatalysts for synergistically catalyzing CO2RR toward syngas synthesis.
