DIY ecology class: Transitioning field activities to an online format.

ABSTRACT: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the transition of many traditional face-to-face classes into an online format with little time to prepare best practice guidelines. In this article, we share a case study of how we adapted a group field activity into an individual laboratory assignment that can be completed during shelter-in-place restrictions. We conclude with ideas for future applications while staying mindful of the ways in which this pandemic has highlighted the inequities of the classroom, especially at community colleges.

Transitioning Communication Education to an Interactive Online Module Format.

Project description:BackgroundThe Changing Talk intervention improves nursing home staff communication by reducing elderspeak. To facilitate dissemination, interactive online modules were created, maintaining the original content. This article reports on the process of transitioning and the results of pilot testing the modules.MethodInteractive online modules were developed, pilot tested, and the evaluated in comparison to outcomes from the classroom format training.ResultsOnline participants (N = 9) demonstrated pre to posttest knowledge gain (scores improved from M = 82.4% to M = 91.2%). Rating of a staff-resident interaction showed improved recognition of elderspeak and person-centered communication after training. Online and original participants reported similar intentions to use learned skills and rated the program highly.ConclusionEvidence-based interventions can be translated from traditional classroom to online format maintaining effects on increasing staff knowledge and intentions to use learned skills in practice. Online but not remote: Adapting field-based ecology laboratories for online learning.

Project description:Teaching ecology effectively and experientially has become more challenging for at least two reasons today. Most experiences of our students are urban, and we now face the near immediate and continuing need to deliver courses (either partially or wholly) online because of COVID-19. Therefore, providing a learning experience that connects students to their environment within an ecological framework remains crucial and perhaps therapeutic to mental health. Here, we describe how prior to the pandemic we adapted our field-based laboratories to include data collection, analysis, and interpretation, along with the development of a citizen-science approach for online delivery. This design is simple to implement, does not require extensive work, and maintains the veracity of original learning outcomes. Collaboration online following field data collection in ecology courses within the context of cities offers further options to adapt to student experience levels, resource availability, and accessibility, as well as bringing instructors and students together to build an open well-curated data set that can be used in ecology courses where no laboratories are available. Finally, it promotes an open collaboration among ecology instructors that can drive lasting conversations about ecology curriculum.

YIMBY-Yes, In My BackYard!-The successful transition to a local online ecology field course.

Project description:Field biology courses provide the ultimate experiential education as students discover the links between theory and practice in ecology and evolution directly in nature. During the spring and summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancelation of face-to-face classes in almost every university in Canada. Whereas traditional university courses were mostly transferred online, the online transition for field biology courses was not so common. Here, I provide an account of a successful transition from traditional field biology course to an online "backyard biology" field course with a small class size of 10 students. While the online field course may not provide the same level of interpersonal benefits of the traditional field course experience, the model outlined here demonstrates that an online field course that incorporates direct experience with the natural environment is possible and should no longer be considered an oxymoron.

The PortaLyzer, a DIY tool that allows environmental DNA extraction in the field.

Project description:The PortaLyzer is a portable homemade device that allows researchers to perform bead-beating steps commonly found in environmental DNA (eDNA) extraction protocols in the field without access to power. This allows researchers to preserve in situ organism abundance by beginning eDNA extraction quickly. The PortaLyzer is composed of a variable speed, battery-powered multi-tool and a vortexer adapter plate. We used the PortaLyzer, in conjunction with the Qiagen DNEasy PowerSoil Pro kit, to successfully field process samples taken from the forelands of the Sólheimajökull and Kvíárjökull glaciers in Iceland, as well as soil samples acquired from a prairie in Indiana. Additionally, we provide evidence that samples held in Buffer CD2 of the DNEasy PowerSoil Pro Kit may be transported to traditional lab spaces and processed up to one month after the initial protocol steps, and still provide an equivalent DNA quality and abundance yield as those processed the same day. These improvements to DNA extraction protocols give researchers more flexibility while sampling, shipping and processing eDNA samples.

Retention and weight outcomes after transitioning an intensive behavioral weight management program from an in-person to a virtual format.

Project description:BackgroundVirtual care offers many potential advantages over traditional in-person care for people with chronic diseases including obesity. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual care was not broadly implemented because of regulatory, legal, and reimbursement barriers.ObjectiveTo evaluate the impact of the transition from an entirely in-person format to a virtual format during the COVID-19 pandemic on retention and weight reduction in a 2-year, structured, intensive behavioral weight management program for people with moderate to severe obesity.MethodsRetrospective cohort study of 1313 program participants stratified according to the phase of the program during which the transition to virtual visits occurred.ResultsAge, sex, and baseline weight were independent predictors of program retention. Transition to virtual visits was associated with greater 2-year program retention. Retention but not mode of program delivery was associated with reduction in weight at 2-year.ConclusionsTransition from in-person to virtual program delivery improved retention and by doing so, indirectly improved weight loss at 2 years. Telemedicine has the potential to overcome many of the limitations associated with traditional in-person weight loss interventions.Clinical trial registrationThis research was reviewed and approved by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT02043457). All participants provided written informed consent.

Scientist Spotlights: Online assignments to promote inclusion in Ecology and Evolution.

Project description:Scientific disciplines face large diversity challenges, with the fields of ecology and evolution being among the most homogeneous-specifically with respect to race and ethnicity. These problems have been recently compounded by large-scale racial unrest, highlighting some of the underlying disparities that have led to these diversity challenges, and a global pandemic, which, by moving instruction online, has created new challenges for inclusive teaching. Among the inclusive-teaching techniques that can be implemented during remote instruction are Scientist Spotlights-role-model interventions that use available online materials to highlight the work of scientists representing multiple axes of diversity. We report here on the implementation of Scientist Spotlights in two courses, both of which emphasize ecology and evolution. We conclude with sample resources and suggestions for adopters.

Impact of transitioning to an online course - A report from the ESTRO gyn teaching course.

Project description:IntroductionIn 2020, the ESTRO course on image-guided radiotherapy and chemotherapy in gynaecological cancer was converted into an online version due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper describes the change process and evaluates the impact on participants compared with previous live courses.Methods and materialsThe 2019 live course contained 41 h of educational content, comprising 33 h of synchronous activities (lectures, interactive activities, videos) and 8 h of homework (contouring, dose planning). For the online course, the lectures were provided as pre-course material (11 mandatory, 22 optional). Contouring/dose planning homework was unchanged. The synchronous sessions were reconfigured as six 2-hour webinars (total educational content ~38 h).Participant numbers/characteristics, engagement and satisfaction for six live courses and the online course were compared.ResultsParticipant numbers for the online and live courses were similar (90 vs. mean 96). There were more participants from outside Europe (28% vs. mean 18%) and more non-doctors (47% vs. mean 33%). Proportion of participants responding to the pre-course questionnaire was similar (77% vs. mean 78%) but post-course questionnaire response was lower (62% vs. mean 92%).43% participants viewed ≥75% of mandatory lectures before the webinars. 86% viewed the optional lectures. Submissions of contouring and dose planning homework was higher (contouring 77%-90% vs. 56%-69%, dose planning 74%-89% vs. 29%-57%).96% (47/49) participants rated the online course as Excellent (43%) or Good (53%). Overall satisfaction was similar (4.4 vs. mean 4.6).ConclusionParticipant satisfaction and engagement with the online course remained high despite less contact time with faculty.

Transitioning Cell Culture CURE Labs from Campus to Online: Novel Strategies for a Novel Time.

Project description:Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) provide a way for students to gain research experience in a classroom setting. Few examples of cell culture CUREs or online CUREs exist in the literature. The Cell Biology Education Consortium (CBEC) provides a network and resources for instructors working to incorporate cell-culture based research into the classroom. In this article, we provide examples from six instructors from the CBEC network on how they structure their cell-culture CUREs and how they transitioned the labs to online in the spring semester of 2020. We intend for these examples to provide instructors with ideas for strategies to set up cell culture CUREs, how to change that design mid-term, and for creating online CUREs in the future.

Differences in visual field loss pattern when transitioning from SITA standard to SITA faster.

Project description:Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm (SITA) Faster is the most recent and fastest testing algorithm for the evaluation of Humphrey visual fields (VF). However, existing evidence suggests that there are some differences in global measures of VF loss in eyes transitioning from SITA Standard to the newer SITA Faster. These differences may be relevant, especially in glaucoma, where VF changes over time influence clinical decisions around treatment. Furthermore, characterization of differences in localizable VF loss patterns between algorithms, rather than global summary measures, can be important for clinician interpretation when transitioning testing strategies. In this study, we determined the effect of transitioning from SITA Standard to SITA Faster on VF loss patterns in glaucomatous eyes undergoing longitudinal VF testing in a real-world clinical setting. Archetypal analysis was used to derive composition weights of 16 clinically relevant VF patterns (i.e., archetypes (AT)) from patient VFs. We found switching from SITA Standard to SITA Faster was associated with less preservation of VF loss (i.e., abnormal AT 2-4, 6-9, 11, 13, 14) relative to successive SITA Standard exams (P value < 0.01) and was associated with relatively greater preservation of AT 1, the normal VF (P value < 0.01). Eyes that transition from SITA Standard to SITA Faster in a real-world clinical setting have an increased likelihood of preserving patterns reflecting a normal VF and lower tendency to preserve patterns reflecting abnormal VF as compared to consecutive SITA Standard exams in the same eye.

Sensory ecology of water detection by bats: a field experiment.

Project description:Bats face a great risk of dehydration, so sensory mechanisms for water recognition are crucial for their survival. In the laboratory, bats recognized any smooth horizontal surface as water because these provide analogous reflections of echolocation calls. We tested whether bats also approach smooth horizontal surfaces other than water to drink in nature by partly covering watering troughs used by hundreds of bats with a Perspex layer mimicking water. We aimed 1) to confirm that under natural conditions too bats mistake any horizontal smooth surface for water by testing this on large numbers of individuals from a range of species and 2) to assess the occurrence of learning effects. Eleven bat species mistook Perspex for water relying chiefly on echoacoustic information. Using black instead of transparent Perspex did not deter bats from attempting to drink. In Barbastella barbastellus no echolocation differences occurred between bats approaching the water and the Perspex surfaces respectively, confirming that bats perceive water and Perspex to be acoustically similar. The drinking attempt rates at the fake surface were often lower than those recorded in the laboratory: bats then either left the site or moved to the control water surface. This suggests that bats modified their behaviour as soon as the lack of drinking reward had overridden the influence of echoacoustic information. Regardless of which of two adjoining surfaces was covered, bats preferentially approached and attempted to drink from the first surface encountered, probably because they followed a common route, involving spatial memory and perhaps social coordination. Overall, although acoustic recognition itself is stereotyped and its importance in the drinking process overwhelming, our findings point at the role of experience in increasing behavioural flexibility under natural conditions.
