The complete mitochondrial genome of Lycodon ruhstrati (Serpentes: Colubridae).

ABSTRACT: The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Lycodon ruhstrati was determined by shotgun sequencing. The total genome size is 17,168 bp, and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 ribosome RNA genes and 2 control regions (D-loops). Most of the genes of L. ruhstrati were distributed on the H-strand, except for the ND6 subunit gene and eight tRNA genes which were encoded on the L-strand. The phylogenetic tree of L. ruhstrati and 12 other closely related species was reconstructed. The mitogenome sequence presented here will be useful to study the evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity of L. ruhstrati.

Project description:Lycodon liuchengchaoi is a new species discovered in recent years which is widely distribute in Anhui, Hubei and Sichuan Province. In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome of L. liuchengchaoi. The result shows that the complete mitogenome of L. liuchengchaoi is 17,171bp. It is similar with the typical mtDNA of Serpentes, which contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 control regions, and a stem-loop region. The phylogenetic tree, contains 17 Serpentiforms species, is divided into two clades which correspond to six genera in Colubridae. The L. liuchengchaoi which appeared into Clade A, clustered within Lycodon.

A new species of the genus Lycodon (Serpentes, Colubridae) from Guangxi, China.

Project description:A new species of colubrid snake, Lycodon cathaya sp. nov., is described based on two adult male specimens collected from Huaping Nature Reserve, Guangxi, southern China. In a phylogenetic analyses, the new species is shown to be a sister taxon to the clade composed of L. futsingensis and L. namdongensis with low statistical support, and can be distinguished from all known congeners by the significant genetic divergence in the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene fragment (p-distance ≥ 7.9%), and morphologically by the following combination of characters: (1) dorsal scales in 17-17-15 rows, smooth throughout; (2) supralabials eight, third to fifth in contact with eye, infralabials nine; (3) ventral scales 199-200 (plus two preventral scales), subcaudals 78; (4) loreal single, elongated, in contact with eye or not, not in contact with internasals; (5) a single preocular not in contact with frontal, supraocular in contact with prefrontal, two postoculars; (6) maxillary teeth 10 (4+2+2+2); (7) two anterior temporals, three posterior temporals; (8) precloacal plate entire; (9) ground color from head to tail brownish black, with 31-35 dusty rose bands on body trunk, 13-16 on tail; (10) bands in 1-2 vertebral scales broad in minimum width; (11) bands separate ground color into brownish black ellipse patches arranged in a row along the top of body and tail; (12) elliptical patches in 3-6 scales of the vertebral row in maximum width; (13) ventral surface of body with wide brownish black strip, margined with a pair of continuous narrow greyish white ventrolateral lines. With the description of the new species, 64 congeners are currently known in the genus Lycodon, with 16 species occurring in China.

A new species of Lycodon Boie, 1826 (Serpentes, Colubridae) from northern Vietnam.

Project description:A new species of the genus Lycodon is described from Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, based on three individuals with distinct differences in morphology and molecular data. The new species is differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: dorsal scales in 17-17-15 rows, smooth throughout; supralabials usually eight (rarely nine); infralabials ten; one elongated loreal on each side, in contact with the eye; precloacal plate single; ventral scales 212-218 (plus one or two preventral scales); subcaudals 90 or 91; maxillary teeth 13 or 14; dorsal surface of body with 28 or 29 light body bands; dorsal surface of tail with 13 cream bands, forming a distinct blotch in the vertebral region. Based on phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data, the new species is recovered as the sister species to a clade containing L. multizonatus and L. liuchengchaoi with strong support from the Bayesian analysis. The new species is at least 7.5% divergent from other species within this clade in uncorrected pairwise distance calculated using a fragment of more than 1000 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome b. This discovery increases the number of Lycodon species known from Vietnam to 16.

Project description:The greater green snake Cyclophiops major is a protected and colubrid species. Here, we investigated the complete mitochondrial genome of C. major. The genome is 17,217bp in size, including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 control regions, and an origin of light-strand replication. All genes are distributed on the heavy strand, except for ND6 gene and 8 tRNA genes. The AT content of the overall base composition of light strand is 59.83%, showing AT bias. Phylogenetic tree was built based on the genome of C. major and other related snakes to analyze their phylogenic relationship.

The mitogenome is a circular molecule of 19,669 base pairs (bp) in length including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and two control regions (D-loop), which is similar to other Colubridae snakes. The total base composition of mitochondrial DNA is A 33.0%, C 24.9%, G 12.8%, and T 29.3%. The mitochondrial genome of Plagiopholis styani contributes to revealing the phylogenetic relationships among species of the Colubridae family.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Bothrops jararaca (Reptilia, Serpentes, Viperidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome, containing 17,526 bp, was determined from the pitviper Bothrops jararaca. It is the first mitogenome for the most medically important genus of snake in Latin America. This mitogenome has common snake mitochondrial features such as a duplicated control region that has nearly identical sequences at two different locations of the mitogenome and a translocation of tRNA-Leu (UUR). Besides, we found a translocation of the tRNA-Pro compared to Colubridae snakes. Finally, an unusual possible duplication containing a tRNA-Phe was observed for the first time and may represent a marker of the genus.

In this study, we successfully sequenced mitochondrial genome of an individual S. peinani. The complete mitochondrial genome of S. peinani is a circular molecule with the entire length of 19,477 bp. The base composition is T (28.1%), G (11.9%), and GC (38.5%), which contains two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 13 protein-coding genes, one origin of replication gene (D-loop), and two non-coding control regions, an origin of light-strand replication, and a 2346 bp non-coding region between tRNA-N and tRNA-Y. A maximum-likelihood (ML) tree of S. peinani and 13 other related species was constructed. The DNA data presented here will be useful to study the evolutionary relationships and genetic diversity of S. peinani.

The total length of the genome was 17,327 bp, and composed of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and 2 control regions. The total base composition was 32.7% for A, 23.7% for T, 13.5% for G and 32.7% for C. The phylogenetic tree with 13 protein-coding genes of T. shangrila together with 12 other closely related species belonging to the family Colubridae was reconstructed.

Project description:The mitochondrial genome sequence of Pseudoxenodon stejnegeri (Squamata: Colubridae: Pseudoxenodontinae) from Taishun County, Zhejiang Province, China, which is 18,475 bp in length and contains 25 tRNAs (including extra two tRNA-Tyr genes and extra one tRNA-Met gene), two rRNAs, 13 protein-coding genes and two identical control regions. The overall AT content of the mitogenome is 59.6% (A = 32.6%, T = 27%, C = 27%, G = 13.4%). In BI and ML phylogenetic analyses, the monophyly of the family Colubridae was well supported and P. stejnegeri was a basal clade of Colubridae.
