Diiron(IV)-oxo species are proposed to effect the cleavage of strong C-H bonds by nonheme diiron enzymes such as soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) and fatty acid desaturases. However, synthetic mimics of such diiron(IV) oxidants are rare.
