Photochromic and fluorescence properties of coumarin fulgimides.

ABSTRACT: Four new fulgimides possessing a fluorescent coumarin unit were synthesized from the corresponding fulgides, and their photochromic as well as fluorescence properties were investigated. The open-ring forms of coumarin fulgimides were found to exhibit fluorescence in the visible region. Upon exposure to UV light, the fulgimides were transformed into the nonfluorescent closed-ring forms, which can be reverted to the initial fluorescent open-ring forms on exposure to visible light. The efficiency of quenching of fluorescence was as high as 95% at the photostationary state of UV irradiation.

Fluorescence modulation of cadmium sulfide quantum dots by azobenzene photochromic switches.

Project description:We have investigated the attachment of azobenzene photochromic switches on the modified surface of cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs). The modification of CdS QDs is done by varying the concentration of the capping agent (mercaptoacetic acid) and NH3 in order to control the size of the QDs. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the crystallite size of CdS QDs ranged from 6 to 10?nm. The azobenzene photochromic derivatives bis(4-hydroxybenzene-1-azo)4,4'(1,1' diphenylmethane) (I) and 4,4'-diazenyldibenzoic acid (II) were synthesized and attached with surface-modified CdS QDs to make fluorophore-photochrome CdS-(I) and CdS-(II) dyad assemblies. Upon UV irradiation, the photochromic compounds (I) and (II) undergo a reversible trans-cis isomerization. The photo-induced trans-cis transformation helps to transfer photo-excited electrons from the conduction band of the CdS QDs to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of cis isomer of photochromic compounds (I) and (II). As a result, the fluorescence of CdS-(I) and CdS-(II) dyads is suppressed approximately five times compared to bare CdS QDs. The fluorescence modulation in such systems could help to design luminescent probes for bioimaging applications.

New Triphenylphosphonium Salts of Spiropyrans: Synthesis and Photochromic Properties.

Project description:The most important area of modern pharmacology is the targeted delivery of drugs, and one of the most promising classes of chemical compounds for creating drugs of this kind are the photochromic spiropyrans, capable of light-controlled biological activity. This work is devoted to the synthesis and study of the photochromic properties of new triphenylphosphonium salts of spiropyrans. It was found that all the synthesized cationic spiropyrans have high photosensitivity, increased resistance to photodegradation and the ability for photoluminescence.

Synthesis and photochromic properties of configurationally varied azobenzene glycosides.

Project description:Spatial orientation of carbohydrates is a meaningful parameter in carbohydrate recognition processes. To vary orientation of sugars with temporal and spatial resolution, photosensitive glycoconjugates with favorable photochromic properties appear to be opportune. Here, a series of azobenzene glycosides were synthesized, employing glycoside synthesis and Mills reaction, to allow "switching" of carbohydrate orientation by reversible E/Z isomerization of the azobenzene N=N double bond. Their photochromic properties were tested and effects of azobenzene substitution as well as the effect of anomeric configuration and the orientation of the sugars 2-hydroxy group were evaluated.

Synthesis, Photochromic and Luminescent Properties of Ammonium Salts of Spiropyrans.

Project description:New salts of photochromic indoline spiropyrans capable of reversibly responding to UV radiation were synthesized to develop light-controlled materials. Photoinduced reactions of the synthesized compounds were studied using absorption and luminescence spectroscopies, and the quantum yields of photoisomerization and other spectral and kinetic characteristics were measured. It was shown that the light sensitivity and photostability of the synthesized compounds are considerably influenced by the length of the spacer between the indole and ammonium nitrogen atoms.

Photochromic and Photocatalytic Properties of Ultra-Small PVP-Stabilized WO3 Nanoparticles.

Project description:Tungsten oxide-based bulk and nanocrystalline materials are widely used as photocatalytic and photo- and electrochromic materials, as well as materials for biomedical applications. In our work, we focused our attention on the effect of sodium cations on the structure and photochromic properties of the WO3@PVP aqueous sols. To establish the effect, the sols were synthesized by either simple pH adjusting of sodium or ammonium tungstates' solutions, or using an ion exchange technique to remove the cations from the materials to the greatest possible extent. We showed that the presence of sodium cations in WO3@PVP favors the formation of reduced tungsten species (W+5) upon UV irradiation of the materials, strongly affecting their photochromic and photocatalytic properties. The pronounced photoreductive properties of WO3@PVP sols in photocatalytic reactions were demonstrated. Due to photoreductive properties, photochromic sols of tungsten oxide can act as effective photoprotectors in photooxidation processes. We believe that our work provides a considerable contribution to the elucidation of photochromic and redox phenomena in WO3-based materials.

Fluorescence Quenching-Based Mechanism for Determination of Hypochlorite by Coumarin-Derived Sensors.

Project description:A fluorescence quenching-based mechanism for the determination of hypochlorite was proposed based on spectroscopic and chromatographic studies on the hypochlorite-sensing potency of three structurally similar and highly fluorescent coumarins. The mode of action was found to rely upon a chlorination of the coumarin-based probes resulting from their reaction with sodium hypochlorite. Importantly, the formation of chlorinated derivatives was accompanied by a linear decrease in the fluorescence intensities of the probes tested. The results obtained suggest the applicability of a coumarin-dependent hypochlorite recognition mechanism for the detection of, as well as for quantitative determination of, hypochlorite species in vitro.

Fluorescence labeling of carbonylated lipids and proteins in cells using coumarin-hydrazide.

Project description:Carbonylation is a generic term which refers to reactive carbonyl groups present in biomolecules due to oxidative reactions induced by reactive oxygen species. Carbonylated proteins, lipids and nucleic acids have been intensively studied and often associated with onset or progression of oxidative stress related disorders. In order to reveal underlying carbonylation pathways and biological relevance, it is crucial to study their intracellular formation and spatial distribution. Carbonylated species are usually identified and quantified in cell lysates and body fluids after derivatization using specific chemical probes. However, spatial cellular and tissue distribution have been less often investigated. Here, we report coumarin-hydrazide, a fluorescent chemical probe for time- and cost-efficient labeling of cellular carbonyls followed by fluorescence microscopy to evaluate their intracellular formation both in time and space. The specificity of coumarin-hydrazide was confirmed in time- and dose-dependent experiments using human primary fibroblasts stressed with paraquat and compared with conventional DNPH-based immunocytochemistry. Both techniques stained carbonylated species accumulated in cytoplasm with strong perinuclear clustering. Using a complimentary array of analytical methods specificity of coumarin-hydrazide probe towards both protein- and lipid-bound carbonyls has been shown. Additionally, co-distribution of carbonylated species and oxidized phospholipids was demonstrated.

Synthesis of a Coumarin-Based PPARγ Fluorescence Probe for Competitive Binding Assay.

Project description:Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) is a molecular target of metabolic syndrome and inflammatory disease. PPARγ is an important nuclear receptor and numerous PPARγ ligands were developed to date; thus, efficient assay methods are important. Here, we investigated the incorporation of 7-diethylamino coumarin into the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone and used the compound in a binding assay for PPARγ. PPARγ-ligand-incorporated 7-methoxycoumarin, 1, showed weak fluorescence intensity in a previous report. We synthesized PPARγ-ligand-incorporating coumarin, 2, in this report, and it enhanced the fluorescence intensity. The PPARγ ligand 2 maintained the rosiglitazone activity. The obtained partial agonist 6 appeared to act through a novel mechanism. The fluorescence intensity of 2 and 6 increased by binding to the ligand binding domain (LBD) of PPARγ and the affinity of reported PPARγ ligands were evaluated using the probe.

Photochromic naphthopyran dyes incorporating a benzene, thiophene or furan spacer: effect on photochromic, optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:We recently demonstrated that diaryl-naphthopyran photochromic dyes are efficient for sensitization of TiO2 mesoporous electrodes, thus allowing the fabrication of photo-chromo-voltaic cells that can self-adapt their absorption of light and their generation of electricity with the light intensity. Herein we report the synthesis, the characterisation of two novel photochromic dyes based on diaryl-naphthopyran core i.e NPI-ThPh and NPI-FuPh for use in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). Compared to our reference dye NPI, the molecules only vary by the nature of the spacer, a thiophene or a furan, connecting the photochromic unit and the phenyl-cyano-acrylic acid moiety used as the anchoring function. We found that swapping a phenyl for a thiophene or a furan leads to an improvement of the absorption properties of the molecules both in solution and after grafting on TiO2 electrodes, however their photochromic process becomes not fully reversible. Despite better absorption in the visible range, the new dyes show poorer photochromic and photovoltaic properties in devices compared to NPI. Thanks to UV-Vis spectroscopy, DFT calculation, electrical characterization of the cells, and impedance spectroscopy, we unravel the factors limiting their performances. Our study contributes to better understand the connection between photochromic and photovoltaic properties, which is key to develop better performing molecules of this class.

Bionic smart recycled paper endowed with amphiphobic, photochromic, and UV rewritable properties.

Project description:The single-use of large volumes of paper has become a serious issue which is depleting our resources and damaging the environment. It is of great significance and challenging to adopt simple, reasonable and practical methods to prepare functional recyclable paper. In this article, inspired by pleochromatic creatures and plant leaves' special wettability, a series of photochromic amphiphobic recycled paper (PAR i ) products was successfully prepared by adding gourd-like modified tungsten trioxide (MTT) to waste paper pulp. The results show that PAR2-7 has excellent lyophobic performance and amazing photochromic properties. It is worth noting that PAR7 has an impressive amphiphobic behavior, and its surface water contact angle (WCA) and oil contact angle (OCA) are 146 ± 1° and 137 ± 1°, respectively. It can withstand continuous ultraviolet light irradiation for 60 h, indicating excellent resistance to ultraviolet radiation. Most importantly, the reversible photochromic properties of PAR7 make it possible to write repeatedly on the surface by using ultraviolet light. In short, the performance of the prepared PAR is stable and superior, which can not only alleviate paper waste, but also means it has great potential in the fields of decoration, packaging, and banknote anti-counterfeiting technology.
