Fe^III ₄₈ -Containing 96-Tungsto-16-Phosphate: Synthesis, Structure, Magnetism and Electrochemistry.

ABSTRACT: The 48-Fe^III -containing 96-tungsto-16-phosphate, [Fe^III ₄₈ (OH)₇₆ (H₂ O)₁₆ (HP₂ W₁₂ O₄₈ )₈ ]^36- (Fe₄₈ ), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. This polyanion comprises eight equivalent {Fe^III ₆ P₂ W₁₂ } units that are linked in an end-on fashion forming a macrocyclic assembly that contains more iron centers than any other polyoxometalate (POM) known to date. The novel Fe₄₈ was synthesized by a simple one-pot reaction of an {Fe₂₂ } coordination complex with the hexalacunary {P₂ W₁₂ } POM precursor in water. The title polyanion was characterized by single-crystal XRD, FTIR, TGA, magnetic and electrochemical studies.

Project description:The 36-NiII -containing 54-tungsto-6-silicate, [Ni36 (OH)18 (H2 O)36 (SiW9 O34 )6 ]6- (Ni36 ) was synthesized by a simple one-pot reaction of the Ni2 -pivalate complex [Ni2 (μ-OH2 )(O2 CCMe3 )4 (HO2 CCMe3 )4 ] with the trilacunary [SiW9 O34 ]10- polyanion precursor in water and structurally characterized by a multitude of physicochemical techniques including single-crystal XRD, FTIR, TGA, elemental analysis, magnetic and electrochemical studies. Polyanion Ni36 comprises six equivalent {NiII 6 SiW9 } units which are linked by Ni-O-W bridges forming a macrocyclic assembly. Magnetic studies demonstrate that the {Ni6 } building blocks in Ni36 remain magnetically intact while forming a hexagonal ring with antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between adjacent {Ni6 } units. Electrochemical studies indicate that the first reduction is reversible and associated with the WVI/V couple, whereas the second reduction is irreversible attributed to the NiII/0 couple.

Synthesis, structure, magnetism and photocatalysis of α-Fe2O3 nanosnowflakes.

Project description:In this work, a simple one-step hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize high-quality α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with a snowflake-like microstructure. First, a series of binary supramolecular aggregates were prepared by a non-covalent combination between a polymer such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and a complex such as potassium ferrocyanide (PF). Then, the aggregates were used as the precursors of the one-step hydrothermal reactions. The snowflake-like nanostructure has six-fold symmetry as a whole, and each petal is symmetric. This synthesis method has the characteristics of simplicity, rapidity, reliance, and high yield, and can be used for creating high-quality α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. Moreover, our results show that the molar ratio of PVP to PF, reaction time and temperature play important roles in the generation of a complete snowflake structure from different angles. Also, the snowflake-like α-Fe2O3 nanostructure exhibits a much higher coercivity (2997 Oe) compared to those reported by others, suggesting a strong hysteresis behaviour, which promises potential applications in memory devices, and other fields. Further, the α-Fe2O3 nanosnowflakes show a much higher photocatalytic degradation activity for cationic organic dyes such as crystal violet, rhodamine 6G than for anionic dyes such as methyl orange. A possible photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for explaining the selectivity of the photocatalytic oxidation reaction of organic dyes. We believe that this study provides a direct link among coordination compounds of transition metals, their supramolecular aggregates with polymers, and controlled hydrothermal synthesis of high-quality inorganic metal oxide nanomaterials.

Mechanism of Mixed-Valence Fe2.5+···Fe2.5+ Formation in Fe4S4 Clusters in the Ferredoxin Binding Motif.

Project description:Most low-potential Fe4S4 clusters exist in the conserved binding sequence CxxCxxC (CnCn+3Cn+6). Fe(II) and Fe(III) at the first (Cn) and third (Cn+6) cysteine ligand sites form a mixed-valence Fe2.5+···Fe2.5+ pair in the reduced Fe(II)3Fe(III) cluster. Here, we investigate the mechanism of how the conserved protein environment induces mixed-valence pair formation in the Fe4S4 clusters, FX, FA, and FB in photosystem I, using a quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical approach. Exchange coupling between Fe sites is predominantly determined by the shape of the Fe4S4 cluster, which is stabilized by the preorganized protein electrostatic environment. The backbone NH and CO groups in the conserved CxxCxxC and adjacent helix regions orient along the FeCn···FeC(n+6) axis, generating an electric field and stabilizing the FeCn(II)FeC(n+6)(III) state in FA and FB. The overlap of the d orbitals via -S- (superexchange) is observed for the single FeCn(II)···FeC(n+6)(III) pair, leading to the formation of the mixed-valence Fe2.5+···Fe2.5+ pair. In contrast, several superexchange Fe(II)···Fe(III) pairs are observed in FX due to the highly symmetric pair of the CDGPGRGGTC sequences. This is likely the origin of FX serving as an electron acceptor in the two electron transfer branches.

Activity Self-Optimization Steered by Dynamically Evolved Fe3+@Fe2+ Double-Center on Fe2O3 Catalyst for NH3-SCR.

Project description:Identification of the active centers dynamically stable under the reaction condition is of paramount importance but challenging because of the limited knowledge of steady-state chemistry on catalysts at the atomic level. Herein, focusing on the Fe2O3 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 (NH3-SCR) as a model system, we reveal quantitatively the self-evolving Fe3+@Fe2+ (∼1:1) double-centers under the in-situ condition by the first-principles microkinetic simulations, which enables the accurate prediction of the optimal industry operating temperature (590 K). The cooperation of this double-center achieves the self-optimization of catalytic activity and rationalizes the intrinsic origin of Fe2O3 catalyzing NH3-SCR at middle-high temperatures instead of high temperatures. Our findings demonstrate the atomic-level self-evolution of active sites and the dynamically adjusted activity variation of the catalyst under the in-situ condition during the reaction process and provide insights into the reaction mechanism and catalyst optimization.

Templation and Concentration Drive Conversion Between a FeII12L12 Pseudoicosahedron, a FeII4L4 Tetrahedron, and a FeII2L3 Helicate.

Project description:We report the construction of three structurally distinct self-assembled architectures: FeII12L12 pseudoicosahedron 1, FeII2L3 helicate 2, and FeII4L4 tetrahedron 3, formed from a single triazatriangulenium subcomponent A under different reaction conditions. Pseudoicosahedral capsule 1 is the largest formed through subcomponent self-assembly to date, with an outer-sphere diameter of 5.4 nm and a cavity volume of 15 nm3. The outcome of self-assembly depended upon concentration, where the formation of pseudoicosahedron 1 was favored at higher concentrations, while helicate 2 exclusively formed at lower concentrations. The conversion of pseudoicosahedron 1 or helicate 2 into tetrahedron 3 occurred following the addition of a CB11H12- or B12F122- template.

Fe-Fe bonding in the rhombic Fe4 cores of the Zintl clusters [Fe4E18]4- (E = Sn and Pb).

Project description:We report here the synthesis and characterization of two endohedral Zintl-ion clusters, [Fe4Sn18]4- and [Fe4Pb18]4-, which contain rhombic Fe4 cores. The Fe-Fe bond lengths are all below 2.5 Å, distinctly shorter than in the corresponding Cu clusters, indicating the presence of Fe-Fe bonding. Subtle differences in the structure of the Fe4 core between the two clusters suggest that the change in tetrel element causes a change in electronic ground state, with a very short Fe-Fe bond length of 2.328 Å present across the diagonal of the rhombus in the lead case.

Size-selected Fe3O4-Au hybrid nanoparticles for improved magnetism-based theranostics.

Project description:Size-selected Fe3O4-Au hybrid nanoparticles with diameters of 6-44 nm (Fe3O4) and 3-11 nm (Au) were prepared by high temperature, wet chemical synthesis. High-quality Fe3O4 nanocrystals with bulk-like magnetic behavior were obtained as confirmed by the presence of the Verwey transition. The 25 nm diameter Fe3O4-Au hybrid nanomaterial sample (in aqueous and agarose phantom systems) showed the best characteristics for application as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging and for local heating using magnetic particle hyperthermia. Due to the octahedral shape and the large saturation magnetization of the magnetite particles, we obtained an extraordinarily high r 2-relaxivity of 495 mM-1·s-1 along with a specific loss power of 617 W·gFe -1 and 327 W·gFe -1 for hyperthermia in aqueous and agarose systems, respectively. The functional in vitro hyperthermia test for the 4T1 mouse breast cancer cell line demonstrated 80% and 100% cell death for immediate exposure and after precultivation of the cells for 6 h with 25 nm Fe3O4-Au hybrid nanomaterials, respectively. This confirms that the improved magnetic properties of the bifunctional particles present a next step in magnetic-particle-based theranostics.

Local Structure and Magnetism of Fe2O3 Maghemite Nanocrystals: The Role of Crystal Dimension.

Project description:Here we report on the impact of reducing the crystalline size on the structural and magnetic properties of γ-Fe2O3 maghemite nanoparticles. A set of polycrystalline specimens with crystallite size ranging from ~2 to ~50 nm was obtained combining microwave plasma synthesis and commercial samples. Crystallite size was derived by electron microscopy and synchrotron powder diffraction, which was used also to investigate the crystallographic structure. The local atomic structure was inquired combining pair distribution function (PDF) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). PDF revealed that reducing the crystal dimension induces the depletion of the amount of Fe tetrahedral sites. XAS confirmed significant bond distance expansion and a loose Fe-Fe connectivity between octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Molecular dynamics revealed important surface effects, whose implementation in PDF reproduces the first shells of experimental curves. The structural disorder affects the magnetic properties more and more with decreasing the nanoparticle size. In particular, the saturation magnetization reduces, revealing a spin canting effect. Moreover, a large effective magnetic anisotropy is measured at low temperature together with an exchange bias effect, a behavior that we related to the existence of a highly disordered glassy magnetic phase.

Ritter-type amination of C(sp3)-H bonds enabled by electrochemistry with SO42.

Project description:By merging electricity with sulfate, the Ritter-type amination of C(sp3)-H bonds is developed in an undivided cell under room temperature. This method features broad substrate generality (71 examples, up to 93% yields), high functional-group compatibility, facile scalability, excellent site-selectivity and mild conditions. Common alkanes and electron-deficient alkylbenzenes are viable substrates. It also provides a straightforward protocol for incorporating C-deuterated acetylamino group into C(sp3)-H sites. Application in the synthesis or modification of pharmaceuticals or their derivatives and gram-scale synthesis demonstrate the practicability of this method. Mechanistic experiments show that sulfate radical anion, formed by electrolysis of sulfate, served as hydrogen atom transfer agent to provide alkyl radical intermediate. This method paves a convenient and flexible pathway for realizing various synthetically useful transformations of C(sp3)-H bonds mediated by sulfate radical anion generated via electrochemistry.

Heme-FeIII Superoxide, Peroxide and Hydroperoxide Thermodynamic Relationships: FeIII-O2•- Complex H-Atom Abstraction Reactivity.

Project description:Establishing redox and thermodynamic relationships between metal-ion-bound O2 and its reduced (and protonated) derivatives is critically important for a full understanding of (bio)chemical processes involving dioxygen processing. Here, a ferric heme peroxide complex, [(F8)FeIII-(O22-)]- (P) (F8 = tetrakis(2,6-difluorophenyl)porphyrinate), and a superoxide complex, [(F8)FeIII-(O2•-)] (S), are shown to be redox interconvertible. Using Cr(?-C6H6)2, an equilibrium state where S and P are present is established in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at -80 °C, allowing determination of the reduction potential of S as -1.17 V vs Fc+/0. P could be protonated with 2,6-lutidinium triflate, yielding the low-spin ferric hydroperoxide species, [(F8)FeIII-(OOH)] (HP). Partial conversion of HP back to P using a derivatized phosphazene base gave a P/HP equilibrium mixture, leading to the determination of pKa = 28.8 for HP (THF, -80 °C). With the measured reduction potential and pKa, the O-H bond dissociation free energy (BDFE) of hydroperoxide species HP was calculated to be 73.5 kcal/mol, employing the thermodynamic square scheme and Bordwell relationship. This calculated O-H BDFE of HP, in fact, lines up with an experimental demonstration of the oxidizing ability of S via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from TEMPO-H (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperdine-N-hydroxide, BDFE = 66.5 kcal/mol in THF), forming the hydroperoxide species HP and TEMPO radical. Kinetic studies carried out with TEMPO-H(D) reveal second-order behavior, kH = 0.5, kD = 0.08 M-1 s-1 (THF, -80 °C); thus, the hydrogen/deuterium kinetic isotope effect (KIE) = 6, consistent with H-atom abstraction by S being the rate-determining step. This appears to be the first case where experimentally derived thermodynamics lead to a ferric heme hydroperoxide OO-H BDFE determination, that FeIII-OOH species being formed via HAT reactivity of the partner ferric heme superoxide complex.
