Three new and one little-known species of Hypogastruridae (Collembola) from Russia's northeast.

ABSTRACT: Three new species, Hypogastrura variata sp. nov., Xenylla aculeata sp. nov., and X. arnei sp. nov., are described based on material from coastal communities of the Sea of Okhotsk, northeast Russia. Taxonomic remarks concerning a little-known species, H. yosii Stach, 1964, found in coastal wrack sediments on Kunashir Island, Kuriles are also given. COI sequences of the above species are analysed, thus allowing for their species statuses to be confirmed.

First Mexican species of the genus Cosberella (Collembola, Hypogastruridae).

Project description:A new species of Cosberella is described and illustrated from a temperate forest of Citlaltépetl formation, Veracruz State. It is characterized by the following combination of characters: Th I with 2 + 2 dorsal setae; 2 + 2 axial setae on Th II-III; two capitate tenent hairs on each leg; unguiculus half the length of unguis; unguis with tooth; six dental setae and Abd VI without anal spines. A key for the species of the genus is included.

Ceratophysella species from mushrooms in China (Collembola, Hypogastruridae).

Project description:Four species of the genus Ceratophysella living on mushrooms are reported from China, including a new species, Ceratophysellaskarzynskii Weiner & Sun, sp. n., which is described from alpine mushrooms. The new species belongs to the Ceratophysella group of species with a dorsal chaetotaxy of type B and differs from the other species in a combination of characters. Ceratophysellaskarzynskii sp. n. is distinguished by its small body size (maximum length 1.09 mm), number of peg-like s-chaetae (30-32) in the ventral sensory file, the trilobed apical vesicle of antennal segment IV, five modified chaetae on dens, and serrated dorsal chaetae. A key to the Chinese species of the genus has been provided.

A new European species of Ceratophysella (Collembola, Hypogastruridae) revealed by morphological data and DNA barcodes.

Project description:A new species, Ceratophysella stachi, from Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, and Ukraine is described based on morphological data and DNA barcodes. It belongs to a small European group of species with type B chaetotaxy and strong tegumentary granulation with distinct fields of coarse granules: C. granulata Stach, 1949, C. lawrencei (Gisin, 1963), C. neomeridionalis (Nosek & Červek, 1970), C. scotica (Carpenter & Evans, 1899), and C. silvatica Rusek, 1964. It differs from all of them in the chaetotaxy of lateral parts of thoracic terga II-III (setae m6 present and one additional seta outside lateral sensillum m7 present or absent) that is exceptional within the whole C. armata-group. Notes on closely related species C. granulata are also given.

A new species and first record of the genus Triacanthella Schaffer, 1897 (Collembola, Poduromorpha, Hypogastruridae) for Africa.

Project description:The first species of the genus Triacanthella to be recorded from Africa is described. Triacanthella madibasp. n. belongs to the Southern Hemisphere group of the genus. It is morphologically closely related to Triacanthella vogeli Weiner & Najt, 1997 from Chile, and appears to be a gondwanian relict. The new species is also the first Triacanthella recorded from a guano habitat.

Project description:Abstract Three new species of entomobryid springtails (Collembola) from China are described here. Homidiapseudozhangisp. nov. is characterised by a narrow irregular longitudinal stripe on the body, smooth chaetae e and l1 of the labial base, and the relative position of the specialized microchaeta on Abd. I; H.qianensissp. nov. by its colour pattern on the antennae and nine sutural macrochaetae on the head; and Entomobryashaanxiensissp. nov. by its colour pattern, labral papillae and the lateral process of labial papilla E. Specimens of Akabosiamatsudoensis Kinoshita, 1919 from China are redescribed, including description of some characters for the first time.

New and little known Isotomidae (Collembola) from the shore of Lake Baikal and saline lakes of continental Asia.

Project description:Collembola of the family Isotomidae from the shores of Lake Baikal and from six saline lake catenas of the Buryat Republic (Russia) and Inner Mongolia Province (China) were studied. Pseudanurophorus barathrum Potapov & Gulgenova, sp. nov. and Parisotoma baicalica Potapov & Gulgenova, sp. nov. from Baikal and Ephemerotoma buryatica Potapov, Huang & Gulgenova, sp. nov. and Folsomia mongolica Huang & Potapov, sp. nov. from saline lakes are described here. A morphological description of epitokous males of Scutisotoma acorrelata Potapov, Babenko & Fjellberg, 2006 is given. A list of 23 species of the family Isotomidae found in the shores of studied lakes is provided based on literature sources and newly collected material.

How little is known about "the little brown frogs": description of three new species of the genus Leptobrachella (Anura: Megophryidae) from Yunnan Province, China.

Project description:Asian leaf-litter toads of the genus Leptobrachella represent a great anuran diversification in Asia. Previous studies have suggested that the diversity of this genus is still underestimated. During herpetological surveys from 2013 to 2018, a series of Leptobrachella specimens were collected from the international border areas in the southern and western parts of Yunnan Province, China. Subsequent analyses based on morphological and molecular data revealed three distinct and previously unknown lineages, which we formally describe as three new species herein. Among them, we describe a new species that occurs at the highest known elevation for Leptobrachella in China. Four species of Leptobrachella, including two new species, are found in the same reserve. Furthermore, our results suggest that the population from Longchuan County, Yunnan, may represent an additional new species of Leptobrachella, although we tentatively assigned it to Leptobrachella cf. yingjiangensis due to the small sample size examined. Lastly, we provide the first description of females of L. yingjiangensis. Our results further highlight that both micro-endemism and sympatric distributions of species are common patterns in Leptobrachella, that contribute to taxonomic and conservation challenges in these frogs. We provide an identification key for Leptobrachella known to occur in Yunnan. Given the lack of knowledge on species diversity of Leptobrachella along international border areas, we recommend that future studies include trans-boundary collaborative surveys.

The new species is unique in having the pso formulae as 32/133/33332 dorsally and 0/000/0001(0) ventrally, and the ventral psx formula as 3/000/221000. A key to all known species of the genus is given.

(unplaced) reposita Walker, 1848, syn. nov. A key to species of the genus Tipula from Laos is presented.
