A Doubly Bridged Bis(phenylethynyl)benzene: Different from a Twisted Tolan.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of a doubly bridged 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene is reported. The target displays photophysical properties, distinctly different from that of its congeners, the singly bridged tolans. Quantum-chemical calculations suggest a lack of planarization of the bridged bis(phenylethynyl)benzene in the first excited state.

Stability of medium-bridged twisted amides in aqueous solutions.

Project description:"Twisted" amides containing nonstandard dihedral angles are typically hypersensitive to hydrolysis, a feature that has stringently limited their utility in water. We have synthesized a series of bridged lactams that contain a twisted amide linkage but exhibit enhanced stability in aqueous environments. Many of these compounds were extracted unchanged from aqueous mixtures ranging from the strongly basic to the strongly acidic. NMR experiments showed that tricyclic lactams undergo reversible hydrolysis at extreme pH ranges but that a number of compounds in this structure class are indefinitely stable under physiologically relevant pH conditions; one bicyclic example was additionally water-soluble. We examined the effect of structure on the reversibility of amide bond hydrolysis, which we attributed to the transannular nature of the amino acid analogs. These data suggest that medium-bridged lactams of these types should provide useful platforms for studying the behavior of twisted amides in aqueous systems.

Singly and doubly ?-to-? platinum-bridged porphyrin dimers and their reductive eliminations.

Project description:2-Borylated porphyrins reacted with Pt(cod)Cl2 to give ?-to-? platinum-bridged porphyrin dimers, which were converted to ?-to-? directly linked porphyrin dimers through triphenylphosphine-mediated reductive elimination. Similar reactions of 2,18-diborylated Ni(ii)-porphyrin and Zn(ii)-porphyrin gave the corresponding doubly ?-to-? platinum-bridged porphyrin dimers. Treatment of the doubly ?-to-? platinum-bridged Ni(ii)-porphyrin dimer with triphenylphosphine caused a single reductive elimination to produce a Ni(ii)-porphyrin dimer possessing a ?-to-? platinum bridge and a ?-to-? direct C-C bond.

A Six-Crossing Doubly Interlocked [2]Catenane with Twisted Rings, and a Molecular Granny Knot.

Project description:A molecular 623 link (a six crossing, doubly interlocked, [2]catenane with twisted rings) and a 31 #31 granny knot (a composite knot made up of two trefoil tangles of the same handedness) were constructed by ring-closing olefin metathesis of an iron(II)-coordinated 2×2 interwoven grid. The connections were directed by pendant phenyl groups to be between proximal ligand ends on the same faces of the grid. The 623 link was separated from the topoisomeric granny knot by recycling size-exclusion chromatography. The identity of each topoisomer was determined by tandem mass spectrometry and the structure of the 623 link confirmed by X-ray crystallography, which revealed two 82-membered macrocycles, each in figure-of-eight conformations, linked through both pairs of loops.

From Ylides to Doubly Yldiide-Bridged Iron(II) High Spin Dimers via Self-Protolysis.

Project description:A synthetic strategy for the preparation of novel doubly yldiide bridged iron(II) high spin dimers ([(?2-C)FeL]2, L = N(SiMe3)2, Mesityl) has been developed. This includes the synthesis of ylide-iron(II) monomers [(Ylide)FeL2] via adduct formation. Subsequent self-protolysis at elevated temperatures by in situ deprotonation of the ylide ligands results in a dimerization reaction forming the desired bridging ?2-C yldiide ligands in [(?2-C)FeL]2. The comprehensive structural and electronic analysis of dimers [(?2-C)FeL]2, including NMR, Mössbauer, and X-ray spectroscopy, as well as X-ray crystallography, SQUID, and DFT calculations, confirm their high-spin FeII configurations. Interestingly, the Fe2C2 cores display very acute Fe-C-Fe angles (averaged: 78.6(2)°) resulting in short Fe···Fe distances (averaged: 2.588(2) Å). A remarkably strong antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe centers has been identified. Strongly polarized Fe-C bonds are observed where the negative charge is mostly centered at the ?2-C yldiide ligands.

Structural characterization of N-protonated amides: regioselective N-activation of medium-bridged twisted lactams.

Project description:The straightforward protonation of lactams by treatment with acid and the full structural characterization of three resulting N-protonated lactams are disclosed. This work provides experimental evidence that N-protonation of amide bonds results in a dramatic increase in nonplanarity about the C-N amide bond. The resulting compounds are discussed in structural, spectroscopic, and reactivity terms. The data suggest that distortion of these amide bonds by approximately 50 degrees is sufficient for their effective N-activation.

Bis(phenylethynyl)arene Linkers in Tetracationic Bis-triarylborane Chromophores Control Fluorimetric and Raman Sensing of Various DNAs and RNAs.

Project description:We report four new luminescent tetracationic bis-triarylborane DNA and RNA sensors that show high binding affinities, in several cases even in the nanomolar range. Three of the compounds contain substituted, highly emissive and structurally flexible bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl-4-ethynyl)arene linkers (3: arene=5,5'-2,2'-bithiophene; 4: arene=1,4-benzene; 5: arene=9,10-anthracene) between the two boryl moieties and serve as efficient dual Raman and fluorescence chromophores. The shorter analogue 6 employs 9,10-anthracene as the linker and demonstrates the importance of an adequate linker length with a certain level of flexibility by exhibiting generally lower binding affinities than 3-5. Pronounced aggregation-deaggregation processes are observed in fluorimetric titration experiments with DNA for compounds 3 and 5. Molecular modelling of complexes of 5 with AT-DNA, suggest the minor groove as the dominant binding site for monomeric 5, but demonstrate that dimers of 5 can also be accommodated. Strong SERS responses for 3-5 versus a very weak response for 6, particularly the strong signals from anthracene itself observed for 5 but not for 6, demonstrate the importance of triple bonds for strong Raman activity in molecules of this compound class. The energy of the characteristic stretching vibration of the C≡C bonds is significantly dependent on the aromatic moiety between the triple bonds. The insertion of aromatic moieties between two C≡C bonds thus offers an alternative design for dual Raman and fluorescence chromophores, applicable in multiplex biological Raman imaging.

Donor-Stabilized Monocarba-Bridged Bis(cyclopentadienyl)alanes.

Project description:Five monocarba-bridged bis(cyclopentadienyl)aluminum halide NHC and thione complexes and one monocarba-bridged bis(cyclopentadienyl)phosphanylalane NHC complex are reported. The former were synthesized by transmetalation of a C[1]magnesocenophane with the corresponding aluminum(III) chloride and aluminum(III) bromide donor adducts. The phosphanylalane complex was obtained by a subsequent functionalization of the corresponding bromoalane with lithium diphenylphosphide. All complexes were characterized in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Bonding energies of the NHC and thione ligands to the aluminum centres were estimated by DFT calculations.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C18H30O2, contains one half-mol-ecule situated on an inversion center. The alkyl chain adopts a fully extended all-trans conformation. The C atoms of the alkyl chain are almost coplanar, with a maximum deviation of 0.042?(6)?Å from the mean plane,which is inclined to the central benzene ring by 6.80?(9)°. The crystal packing exhibits no short inter-molecular contacts.
