Project description:The adsorption of elemental mercury (Hg0) on activated carbons modified with 0.2, 0.6, and 1 M HCl is systematically examined. Breakthrough curves are measured, and coupled adsorption and desorption experiments with temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) are performed. The experiments show that impregnation with HCl produces surface-bound chlorine, which significantly increases the capacity of activated carbons for mercury. Physisorptive interactions between elemental mercury and the activated carbon surface dominate on the basic materials. In contrast, on HCl-modified activated carbons, chemisorptive interactions of Hg0 with surface-bound chlorine lead to a complex involving carbon, chlorine, and mercury. Using TPD, two mechanisms could be identified that yield reaction products with different energetic values. By continuously recording Hg0 and Hgtotal concentrations, the formation of Hg0 and Hg x Cl2 during desorption of the complexes from the surface could be studied. It is shown that Hg x Cl2 found in TPD is not present as a solid salt in the pores but is formed by thermal degradation of the mercury chlorine complex on the carbon surface. The mass fraction of Hg measured in TPD which is bound in Hg x Cl2 depends on the Hg loading of the activated carbons, with a maximum mass fraction of 27%. We propose that an important step in the chemisorptive reaction with increasing mercury loading is the conversion of a HgCl2 complex into a Hg2Cl2 complex.

Project description:Distinctive Cr-MOF@Da composites have been constructed using chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and diatomite (Da). The new materials have hierarchical pore structures containing micropores, mesopores and macropores. We have synthesized various morphologies of the MOF compound Cr-MIL-101 to combine with Da in a one-pot reaction step. These distinctive hierarchical pore networks within Cr-MIL-101@Da enable exceptional adsorptive performance for a range of molecules, including hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapor. Selectivity for H2 or CO2 can be moderated by the morphology and composition of the Cr-MIL-101 included in the Cr-MOF@Da composite. The encapsulation and growth of Cr-MIL-101 within and on Da have resulted in excellent water retention as well as high thermal and hydrolytic stability. In some cases, Cr-MIL-101@Da composite materials have demonstrated increased thermal stability compared with that of Cr-MIL-101; for example, decomposition temperatures >340 ℃ can be achieved. Furthermore, these Cr-MIL-101@Da composites retain structural and morphological integrity after 60 cycles of repeated hydration/dehydration, and after storage for more than one year. These characteristics are difficult to achieve with many MOF materials, and thus suggest that MOF-mineral composites show high potential for practical gas storage and water vapor capture.

Project description:Adsorption and desorption behaviors of tetracycline hydrochloride by activated carbon-based adsorbents derived from sugar cane bagasse modified with ZnCl2 were investigated. The activated carbon was tested by SEM, EDX, BET, XRD, FTIR, and XPS. This activated carbon exhibited a high BET surface area of 831 m2 g-1 with the average pore diameter and pore volume reaching 2.52 nm and 0.45 m3 g-1, respectively. The batch experimental results can be described by Freundlich equation, pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the intraparticle diffusion model, while the maximum adsorption capacity reached 239.6 mg g-1 under 318 K. The effects of flow rate, bed height, initial concentration, and temperature were studied in fixed bed adsorption experiments, and adsorption data were fitted with six dynamic adsorption models. The results of characterizations and the batch experiments were analyzed to study the adsorption and desorption mechanisms. Tetracycline hydrochloride and activated carbon were bonded together by ?-? interactions and cation-? bonds. Ethanol was used as an eluent which bonded with 10 hydrogen bond acceptors on tetracycline hydrochloride to form a complex by hydrogen bonding to achieve recycling.

Project description:Chromium (Cr) is a widely used metal in metallurgical and chemical industries, whose waste contaminates the surface and groundwater. Cr (VI) is toxic and produces carcinogenic effects owing to its high mobility in water and soil. In this work, computational and experimental studies from the adsorption of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions on teak wood residues activated with ZnCl2 (AT) are presented. Full interpretation of data can be found in DOI:10.1016/j.jece.2020.103702 [1]. Experimental data were adjusted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isothermal models and the nonlinear and linear forms of the Pseudo-first and Pseudo-second order kinetic models. Computational data allow to understand the adsorption process of Cr(VI) on carbonaceous materials.

Project description:We recently discovered that transformation of the neonicotinoid insecticidal pharmacophore alters sorption propensity to activated carbon, with products adsorbing less than parent compounds. To assess the environmental fate of novel transformation products that lack commercially available standards, researchers must rely on predictive approaches. In this study, we combined computationally derived quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) parameters for neonicotinoids and neonicotinoid transformation products with experimentally determined Freundlich partition constants (log K F for sorption to carbon nanotubes [CNTs] and granular activated carbon [GAC]) to model neonicotinoid and transformation product sorption. QSAR models based on neonicotinoid sorption to functionalized/nonfunctionalized CNTs (used to generalize/simplify neonicotinoid-GAC interactions) were iteratively generated to obtain a multiple linear regression that could accurately predict neonicotinoid sorption to CNTs using internal and external validation (within 0.5 log units of the experimentally determined value). The log K F,CNT values were subsequently related to log K F,GAC where neonicotinoid sorption to GAC was predicted within 0.3 log-units of experimentally determined values. We applied our neonicotinoid-specific model to predict log K F,GAC for a suite of novel neonicotinoid transformation products (i.e., formed via hydrolysis, biotransformation, and chlorination) that do not have commercially available standards. We present this modeling approach as an innovative yet relatively simple technique to predict fate of highly specialized/unique polar emerging contaminants and/or transformation products that cannot be accurately predicted via traditional methods (e.g., pp-LFER), and highlights molecular properties that drive interactions of emerging contaminants.

Project description:The lack of adequate treatment for the removal of pollutants from domestic, hospital and industrial effluents has caused great environmental concern. Therefore, there is a need to develop materials that have the capacity to treat these effluents. This work aims to develop and characterize an activated charcoal from olive pomace, which is an agro-industrial residue, for adsorption of Nimesulide in liquid effluent and to evaluate the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium using experimental design. The raw material was oven dried at 105 °C for 24 h, ground, chemically activated in a ratio of 1:0.8:0.2 of olive pomace, zinc chloride and calcium hydroxide and thermally activated by pyrolysis in a reactor of stainless steel at 550 °C for 30 min. The activated carbon was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) method, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), density and zero charge potential analysis. The surface area obtained was 650.9 m2 g-1. The kinetic and isothermal mathematical models that best described the adsorption were PSO and Freundlich and the highest adsorption capacity obtained was 353.27 mg g-1. The results obtained showed the good performance of activated carbon produced from olive pomace as an adsorbent material and demonstrated great potential for removing emerging contaminants such as Nimesulide.

Project description:A number of studies have achieved the consensus that microwave thermal technology can regenerate the granular activated carbon (GAC) more efficiently and energy-conservatively than other technologies. In particular, in the microwave heating industry, permittivity is a crucial parameter. This paper developed two equivalent models to establish the relationship between effective complex permittivity and pore volume of the GAC. It is generally based on Maxwell-Garnett approximation (MGA) theory. With two different assumptions in the model, two quantificational expressions were derived, respectively. Permittivity measurements and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) testing had been introduced in the experiments. Results confirmed the two expressions, which were extremely similar. Theoretical and experimental graphs were matched. This paper set up a bridge which links effective complex permittivity and pore volume of the GAC. Furthermore, it provides a potential and convenient method for the rapid assisted characterization of the GAC in its adsorption performance.

Project description:In this paper, multiscale composites formed by grafting N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNs) on the surface of polyamide (PAN)-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated and their adsorption performance for CO₂ was determined. The spaghetti-like and randomly oriented CNs were homogeneously grown onto ACFs. The pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions for ACFs made the CNs grow above with a large pore size distribution, decreased the oxidation resistance, and exhibited different predominant N-functionalities after chemical vapor deposition processes. Specifically, the CNs grafted on ACFs with or without pre-immersion of cobalt(II) ions were characterized by the pyridine-like structures of six-member rings or pyrrolic/amine moieties, respectively. In addition, the loss of microporosity on the specific surface area and pore volume exceeded the gain from the generation of the defects from CNs. The adsorption capacity of CO₂ decreased gradually with increasing temperature, implying that CO₂ adsorption was exothermic. The adsorption capacities of CO₂ at 25 °C and 1 atm were between 1.53 and 1.92 mmol/g and the Freundlich equation fit the adsorption data well. The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption, implying physical adsorption, indicated that the growth of CNTs on the ACFs benefit CO₂ adsorption.

Project description:The availability and quality of water resources is currently the primary concern in Southern Africa. The challenge is to improve or develop water treatment materials or methods to solve this problem of potable water scarcity. Hence, this article presents the analyzed data, which are supplementary data information on the study of bio nanosponge phosphorylated-carbon nanotube/nanoparticles polyurethane composite (pMWCNT/β-CD/TiO2-Ag) as polymeric nanobiosorbent, for water treatment. The developed polymeric nanobiosorbent (pMWCNT/β-CD/TiO2-Ag) was synthesized using combined methods of amidation reaction, cross polymerization, and sol-gel process. The removal of water pollutants (trichloroethylene (TCE) and Congo red (CR) dye) was conducted by the batch adsorption method. The conditions used during the adsorption experiments and methods (applied to quantify the water samples after adsorption studies) are described. Additional data obtained on the effect of pH, isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies are also illustrated.

Project description:In this work, chitosan bead materials were modified by cross-linking with epichlorohydrin (EP) and glutaraldehyde (GA) for the removal of heavy metals in wastewater. Using these cross-linked chitosan materials, the dependence of adsorption of chromate anions on pH was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results show that the adsorption process of the chromate (Cr) ions greatly depends on the pH of the solution, with the chitosan modified by cross-linking being an efficient adsorbent for chromate. On the other hand, quantum chemistry calculations were conducted to find out the factor determining the pH dependence of the adsorption efficiency of chromate ions on the dimer chitosan molecule, and show results similar to those found in the experiment. Both the experimental and numerical results show that the total charge numbers of the adsorbent and the adsorbate species and their relative molecular geometries are crucial in determining the adsorption efficiency.
