Project description:Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) allows for the determination of the bonding strength and coverage of molecular mono- or multilayers on a surface and is widely used in surface science. In its traditional form using a mass spectrometric readout, this information is derived indirectly by analysis of resulting desorption peaks. This is problematic because the mass spectrometer signal not only originates from the sample surface but also potentially from other surfaces in the measurement chamber. As a complementary alternative, we introduce plasmonic TPD, which directly measures the surface coverage of molecular species adsorbed on metal nanoparticles at ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Using the examples of methanol and benzene on Au nanoparticle surfaces, the method can resolve all relevant features in the submonolayer and multilayer regimes. Furthermore, it enables the study of two types of nanoparticles simultaneously, which is challenging in a traditional TPD experiment, as we demonstrate specifically for Au and Ag.

Project description:Boron silicate (BS) with a chabazite framework structure was synthesised using a direct route and rigorously characterized before it was ion-exchanged with copper to form Cu-BS. Employing in situ infrared spectroscopy, we show that Cu-BS is capable of oxidising methane to methoxy species and methanol interacts with the boron sites without deprotonation.

Project description:This paper proposes a parameter-free mathematical model of analyzing either monosite or multisite temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) spectra. By linearizing the integral function difference, the desorption kinetic parameters, such as the desorption order n, the desorption activation energy E d, and the pre-exponential factor ν, can be extracted simultaneously with promising accuracy. A custom "ant" is further established in the model to explore the spectra by a "prediction-correction" loop, and the kinetics and the coverage distribution of the individual peak in the spectra can be solved sequentially. Meanwhile, eight cases on spectrum analysis, including but not limited to the spectrum with coverage-dependent kinetics, the spectrum affected by the noise, the practical spectrum, are demonstrated to fully understand the model's principle, process, and application. Moreover, the model optimization and resolution limitation are further discussed to stimulate the future potential of the innovative parameter-free model.

Project description:Unsafe drinking water leads to millions of human deaths each year, while contaminated wastewater discharges are a significant threat to aquatic life. To relieve the burden of unsafe water, we are in search of an inexpensive material that can adsorb pathogenic viruses from drinking water and adsorb toxic residual chlorine from wastewater. To impart virus and chlorine removal abilities to cellulosic materials, we modified the primary hydroxyl group with a positively charged guanidine group, to yield guanidine modified cellulose derivatives. Microcrystalline cellulose (MC) bearing covalently bonded guanidine hydrochloride (MC-GC) and hydrogen-bonded guanidine hydrochloride (MC-GH) were synthesized, and electrospun into nanofibers after blending with the non-ionogenic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), to produce large pore sized, high surface area membranes. The MC-GC/PVA and MC-GH/PVA nanofibers were stabilized against water dissolution by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde vapor. The water-stable MC-GC/PVA mats were able to remove more than 4 logs of non-enveloped porcine parvovirus (PPV) and enveloped Sindbis virus and reached 58% of chlorine removal. The MC-GC/PVA nanofibers demonstrated better performance for pathogen removal and dechlorination than MC-GH/PVA nanofibers. This first study of MC-GC/PVA electrospun mats for virus removal shows they are highly effective and merit additional research for virus removal.

Project description:In this study, four metal ions Mg2+, Al3+, Fe3+, and Zn2+ were loaded on the surface of activated carbon by an impregnation method coupled with high-temperature calcination to prepare modified activated carbon. Scanning electron microscopy, specific surface area and pore size analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier infrared spectroscopy were used to evaluate the structure and morphology of the modified activated carbon. The findings show that the modified activated carbon had a large microporous structure and high specific surface area, both of which significantly improved absorbability. This study also investigated the adsorption and desorption kinetics of the prepared activated carbon for three flavonoids with representative structures. The adsorption amounts of quercetin, luteolin, and naringenin in the blank activated carbon reached 920.24 mg g-1, 837.07 mg g-1, and 677.37 mg g-1, while for activated carbon impregnated with Mg, the adsorption amounts reached 976.34 mg g-1, 963.39 mg g-1, and 817.98 mg g-1, respectively; however, the desorption efficiencies of the three flavonoids varied a lot. The differences in desorption rates of naringenin as compared with quercetin and luteolin in the blank activated carbon were 40.13% and 46.22%, respectively, and the difference in desorption rates increased to 78.46% and 86.93% in the activated carbon impregnated with Al. The differences provide a basis for the application of this type of activated carbon in the selective enrichment and separation of flavonoids.

Project description:The presence of phenol in water bodies exists due to the discharge of wastewater from industrial, agricultural and domestic activities. Its presence in water is associated with a decrease in the quality of drinking water because its change the taste and odour [1]. The adsorption process is one of the most used treatments to remove the phenol of waters and the activated carbon is an appropriate adsorbent due to its high surface area, porosity and low cost. The studies about the adsorption process are addressed by different views of point such as equilibrium and thermodynamic data. In this work, the adsorption isotherms of phenol on five activated carbons with different physicochemical properties in aqueous solution are presented. In addition, the immersion enthalpies, the interaction enthalpies, the Gibbs energy and the entropy changes are included. The isotherms data are adjusted to the Freundlich and Sips models. The immersion enthalpy values are between -7.670 and -57.0 J g-1, the interaction enthalpies are between 48.00 and -11.70 J g-1, the Gibbs energy change are between -5337 and -12322 J mol-1 K-1 and finally, the entropy change values are between 18.10 and 39.70 J K-1.

Project description:The dynamic adsorption/desorption performances of modified hierarchical USY zeolites treated with an ammonia solution (NH4OH) at different concentrations were investigated using gas-phase toluene as an indicator. The characterization results indicated that the ammonia treatment could result in the expansion of microporous channels and the formation of a mesoporous structure without evident decrease in crystallinity. The experiment results regarding dynamic adsorption/desorption performances revealed that the mass transfer resistance of modified USY adsorbents were greatly reduced treating with NH4OH. Among the modified samples, the 0.1 mol L-1 NH4OH treated USY adsorbent exhibited large adsorptive capacity and highest desorption rate, which show good cyclic performance that could preserve its adsorbent capacity after 20 cycles. In contrast, pristine USY samples had lost around 28% of the initial adsorption capacity after 20 cycles. Moreover, the NaOH-treated sample showed great crystallinity decline compared to the NH4OH-treated samples due to excessive silicon atom leaching from the USY framework, and had lower adsorption capacity under humid conditions. Therefore, NH4OH-modified USY zeolites could be promising adsorbents for the adsorption/desorption process of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Project description:In this study, we selected materials that efficiently adsorb total hydrocarbons (THCs) from petrochemical storage facilities and applied four types of activated carbons to adsorb THCs to evaluate their properties. Four gases with low boiling points, namely, ethylene, ethane, propylene, and propane, generated via petrochemical storage facilities, were selected and mixed to a constant concentration with four types of materials and used to investigate the adsorption capacities and desorption properties. The adsorbents comprised two raw materials and two chemically activated materials. The specific surface areas of activated palm (2085 m2/g) and coal (1752 m2/g), which are chemically activated carbons, exhibited a twofold increase compared to those of raw palm (1232 m2/g) and coal (946 m2/g). Thus, we identified the correlations between the physical properties of the activated carbon adsorption materials and their adsorption capacities for four low-boiling-point THCs generated by petrochemical storage facilities.
