RNA polymerases (RNAPs) synthesize RNA from NTPs, whereas DNA polymerases synthesize DNA from 2'dNTPs. DNA polymerases select against NTPs by using steric gates to exclude the 2'OH, but RNAPs have to employ alternative selection strategies.
