Confirming validity of The Fear of COVID-19 Scale in Japanese with a nationwide large-scale sample.

ABSTRACT: Assessing fear and anxiety regarding COVID-19 viral infection is essential for investigating mental health during this epidemic. We have developed and validated a Japanese-language version of The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) based on a large, nationwide residential sample (n = 6,750) recruited through news and social media responding to an online version of the questionnaire. Data was collected from August 4-25, 2020. Results correlated with K6, GAD-7 and IES-R psychological scales, and T-tests and analysis of variance identified associated factors. All indices indicated the two-factor model emotional fear reactions and symptomatic expressions of fear a better fit for our data than a single-factor model in Confirmatory Factor Analysis (?2 = 164.16, p<0.001, CFI 0.991, TLI = 0.985, RMSEA = 0.043). Socio-demographic factors identified as disaster vulnerabilities such as female sex, sexual minority, elderly, unemployment, and present psychiatric history associated with higher scores. However, respondent or family member experience of infection risk, or work/school interference from confinement, had greatest impact. Results suggest necessity of mental health support during this pandemic similar to other disasters.

Project description:Using RNA-seq and high-resolution mass spectrometry we performed a comprehensive systems analysis on 128 plasma and leukocyte samples from hospitalized patients with or without COVID-19 (n=102 and 26 respectively) and with differing degrees of disease severity. We generated abundance measurements for over 17,000 transcripts, proteins, metabolites, and lipids and compiled them with clinical data into a curated relational database. This resource offers the unique opportunity to perform systems analysis and cross-ome correlations to both molecules and patient outcomes. In total 219 molecular features were mapped with high significance to COVID-19 status and severity, including those involved in processes such as complement system activation, dysregulated lipid transport, and B cell activation. In one example, we detected a trio of covarying molecules – citrate, plasmenyl-phosphatidylcholines, and gelsolin (GSN) – that offer both pathophysiological insight and potential novel therapeutic targets. Further, our data revealed in some cases, and supported in others, that several biological processes were dysregulated in COVID-19 patients including vessel damage, platelet activation and degranulation, blood coagulation, and acute phase response. For example, we observed that the coagulation-related protein, cellular fibronectin (cFN), was highly increased within COVID-19 patients and provide new evidence that the upregulated proteoform stems from endothelial cells, consistent with endothelial injury as a major activator of the coagulation cascade. The abundance of prothrombin, which is cleaved to form thrombin during clotting, was significantly reduced and correlated with severity and might help to explain the hyper coagulative environment of SARS-CoV-2 infection. From transcriptomic analysis of leukocytes, we concluded that COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) demonstrated a phenotype that overlapped with, but was distinct from, that found in patients with non-COVID-19-ARDS. To aid in the global efforts toward elucidation of disease pathophysiology and therapeutic development, we created a web-based tool with interactive visualizations allowing for easy navigation of this systems-level compendium of biomolecule abundance in relation to COVID-19 status and severity. Finally, we leveraged these multi-omic data to predict COVID-19 patient outcomes with machine learning, which highlighted the predictive power of these expansive molecular measurements beyond the standardized clinical estimate of 10-year survival Charlson score.

Project description:BackgroundThe Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) is a brief self-report measure developed at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. The scale evaluates the emotional responses to COVID-19. To date, the FCV-19S has been translated and validated in about 20 languages and has been used in many published research. The current study aimed to validate the Polish version of the FCV-19S.MethodThe FCV-19S was translated into Polish using forward- and back-translation. From May 15th to June 15th 2020, a total of 708 community members (Sample 1: 383 persons, 209 females, Sample 2: 325 persons, 198 females) participated in the online study. The participants were recruited using online advertisements in social media. Participation was anonymous, voluntary, and without compensation. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the one-factor structure of the FCV-19S. Then, measurement invariance was analyzed across samples, gender and age groups. To assess the validity of the scale, correlations between the FCV-19S and the remaining scales were computed.ResultsInternal consistency of the FCV-19S was good in both samples (Cronbach's alpha 0.89 and 0.85). The CFA showed that the one-factor model fits the data well (RMSEA = 0.067, 90% CI [0.059-0.094], CFI = 0.977, TLI = 0.965, GFI = 0.986). The criteria for configural, metric, scalar and strict invariance were met for all models tested. The FCV-19S scores correlated significantly with age, subjective vulnerability to the disease, neuroticism, self-reported compliance with the pandemic measures, and three kinds of preventive behavior (i.e., social distancing, hand hygiene, and disinfecting things).ConclusionThe Polish version of the FCV-19S had a unidimensional structure, good reliability, and correlated as predicted with other variables. With the FCV-19S and the obtained results, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the government can gain more valuable information about people who may be at risk for negative psychological outcomes during the pandemic or who are not implementing protective behavior. The tool can be used in hospitals to quickly screen the level of fear in patients and minimize its severe adverse consequences.
