Data from vibration measurement in a bucket wheel excavator operator's cabin with the aim of vibrations damping.

ABSTRACT: In the paper the authors present the procedure of measuring vibration and obtained data accruing in a bucket wheel excavator's operator cabin. Details of the selection and location of the measuring points are firstly given. In the following part, the example of for the bucket wheel excavator SchRs 1200, will be presented. This machine is in use at one of Poland's open cast mins. The operating conditions are briefly characterized in the descriptions of the measurement series. The measuring equipment is also presented. The recorded data are presented in two ways. The first of the presents time waveforms for each measuring channel. The second one presents Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrums after filtering the measured signals. The obtained data is used to develop a vibrations control algorithm.

Impact damping and vibration attenuation in nematic liquid crystal elastomers.

Project description:Nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) exhibit unique mechanical properties, placing them in a category distinct from other viscoelastic systems. One of their most celebrated properties is the 'soft elasticity', leading to a wide plateau of low, nearly-constant stress upon stretching, a characteristically slow stress relaxation, enhanced surface adhesion, and other remarkable effects. The dynamic soft response of LCE to shear deformations leads to the extremely large loss behaviour with the loss factor tanδ approaching unity over a wide temperature and frequency ranges, with clear implications for damping applications. Here we investigate this effect of anomalous damping, optimising the impact and vibration geometries to reach the greatest benefits in vibration isolation and impact damping by accessing internal shear deformation modes. We compare impact energy dissipation in shaped samples and projectiles, with elastic wave transmission and resonance, finding a good correlation between the results of such diverse tests. By comparing with ordinary elastomers used for industrial damping, we demonstrate that the nematic LCE is an exceptional damping material and propose directions that should be explored for further improvements in practical damping applications.

Measurement data obtained by an instrumented steering wheel for driver model development.

Project description:The data article presents the data acquired by an Instrumented Steering Wheel, able to measure the three force components and the three moment components applied by each of the two driver hands on an Instrumented Steering Wheel (ISW). Additionally, the ISW senses the grip forces at each hand. In order to simulate emergency manoeuvres in a safe environment, a test track with a kick plate is used. Nine different drivers pass over the kick plate six times each. The drivers need to make an action on the steering wheel to counteract the lateral disturbance and recover the straight desired path. The vehicle has been instrumented with an ISW and an inertial measuring unit. Data acquired by the two sensors have been synchronized and analysed. The force components due to mass properties of the ISW have been compensated in a proper way, to highlight the loads exerted only by the driver hands. In the present data article, the data acquired during the described kick-plate test are reported for one driver during a single test. Discussion and conclusion have been presented in [1]. Data are provided in Matlab environment. Videos are provided to show how the manoeuvre occurs. The vehicle that was used for tests was modified with respect to the corresponding production vehicle. Data refer to the specific vehicle used in the tests that does not match with any vehicle produced by Toyota.

Vibration Damping Analysis of Lightweight Structures in Machine Tools.

Project description:The dynamic behaviour of a machine tool (MT) directly influences the machining performance. The adoption of lightweight structures may reduce the effects of undesired vibrations and increase the workpiece quality. This paper aims to present and compare a set of hybrid materials that may be excellent candidates to fabricate the MT moving parts. The selected materials have high dynamic characteristics and capacity to dampen mechanical vibrations. In this way, starting from the kinematic model of a milling machine, this study evaluates a number of prototypes made of Al foam sandwiches (AFS), Al corrugated sandwiches (ACS) and composite materials reinforced by carbon fibres (CFRP). These prototypes represented the Z-axis ram of a commercial milling machine. The static and dynamical properties have been analysed by using both finite element (FE) simulations and experimental tests. The obtained results show that the proposed structures may be a valid alternative to the conventional materials of MT moving parts, increasing machining performance. In particular, the AFS prototype highlighted a damping ratio that is 20 times greater than a conventional ram (e.g., steel). Its application is particularly suitable to minimize unwanted oscillations during high-speed finishing operations. The results also show that the CFRP structure guarantees high stiffness with a weight reduced by 48.5%, suggesting effective applications in roughing operations, saving MT energy consumption. The ACS structure has a good trade-off between stiffness and damping and may represent a further alternative, if correctly evaluated.

Damping of monocular pendular nystagmus with vibration in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

Project description:Acquired pendular nystagmus (PN) occurs commonly in multiple sclerosis (MS) and results in a highly disabling oscillopsia that impairs vision. It usually consists of pseudo-sinusoidal oscillations at a single frequency (3-5 Hz) that often briefly stop for a few hundred milliseconds after saccades and blinks. The oscillations are thought to arise from instability in the gaze-holding networks ("neural integrator") in the brainstem and cerebellum.(1,2) Here we describe a patient with monocular PN in whom vibration on the skull from a handheld muscle massager strikingly diminished or stopped her nystagmus.

Floor vibrations for motivation and feedback in the rat vibration actuating search task.

Project description:Motivating rodents to perform cognitive tasks often relies on the application of aversive stimuli. The Vibration Actuating Search Task (VAST) is a novel open-field task in which gradient floor vibration provides motivation for the rodent to navigate in the direction of diminishing vibration to an unmarked target destination. Using floor vibration as a motivational stimulus may overcome several of the potential confounds associated with stimuli used in other tasks. In a series of three experiments, we determined whether (1) rats exhibit place preference for floor vibration over other aversive stimuli (i.e., water, foot shock, and bright light), (2) exposure to floor vibration is associated with a lower corticosterone response than exposure to these other stimuli, (3) rats successfully acquire the VAST, and (4) VAST performance is sensitive to 6 h of sleep deprivation (SD). Our results showed that rats exhibited place preference for vibration over water, foot shock, and bright light environments, and that corticosterone levels were lower in rats exposed to vibration than those exposed to water. VAST performance also significantly improved over two days of testing for some metrics, and SD impaired VAST performance. Overall, we conclude that (1) rats exhibit place preference for vibration over other stimuli commonly used to motivate task performance, (2) the vibrations employed by the VAST produce lower concentrations of circulating corticosterone than forced swimming, (3) rats can learn to use gradient floor vibration as a mode of performance feedback within two days of testing, and (4) VAST performance is substantially impaired by SD. Thus, the VAST is an effective and practical testbed for studying the mechanisms by which SD causes deficits in feedback-dependent decision making.

A new adaptive resonance frequency of piezoelectric components used for vibration damping.

Project description:This paper describes two methods for vibration damping in a broad band frequency range using a piezoelectric patch. The first method, applied to an adaptive device, uses a bias (static voltage control), which applies stresses or releases stresses in a piezoelectric component to modify its mechanical characteristics and thereby its resonance frequency. The second method is based on a semipassive approach [synchronized switch damping (SSD)], developed to control structural vibration damping using a piezoelectric component. Attenuations of 10 and 4.8 dB in vibration velocity have been obtained using the adaptive frequency and SSD methods.

Resonant vibrations of a non-ideal gyroscopic rotary system with nonlinear damping and nonlinear stiffness of the elastic support.

Project description:When motor performance characteristic is unknown, non-linear differential equations of motion of nonideal gyroscopic rigid rotary system with nonlinear cubic damping and nonlinear stiffness of the elastic support turn out to be numerically unsolvable.•In this case, the method uses the motor performance characteristic expression found from the frequency equation of forced stationary oscillations based on assumption that the angular acceleration is many times less than the square of the angular speed of rotation, replacing the stationary rotation angular speed with the shaft rotation angle derivative.•The method correctness is evidenced by a good consistency between the rotor motion equation numerical solution results and the analytical solution results, and by the nonlinear cubic damping of the shaft angular coordinate oscillograms obtained by direct simulation, as well as by comparison with the results of numerical simulation for a straight-line DC motor performance characteristic.•The method limitations are that it is used for the first approximation and weak nonlinear oscillations in the resonance region, where the shaft rotation speed is of the order of the oscillating system natural frequency.

Soft-tissue vibration and damping response to footwear changes across a wide range of anthropometrics in running.

Project description:Different factors were shown to alter the vibration characteristics of soft-tissue compartments during running. Changing pre-heel strike muscle activation or changing footwear conditions represents two possibilities to influence the vibration response via frequency shift or altered damping. Associated with the study of muscle pre-tuning is the difficulty in quantifying clean experimental data for the acceleration of soft-tissue compartments and muscle activities in heterogeneous populations. The purpose of this study was to determine the vibration and pre-tuning response to footwear across a wide range of participants during running and establish and describe groups formed according to the damping coefficient. 32 subjects were used for further analysis. The subjects ran at a self-selected speed (5 min) on a treadmill in two different shoes (soft & hard), while soft-tissue accelerations and muscle activation at the gastrocnemius medialis were quantified. Damping coefficients, total muscle intensity and dominant vibration frequencies were determined. Anthropometrics and skinfold measurements of the lower limbs were obtained. According to the damping coefficient response to the footwear intervention, three groups were formed, with most runners (n = 20) showing less damping in the hard shoe. Total muscle intensity, anthropometrics, and dominant vibration frequency across footwear were not different for these three groups. Most runners (84.4%) used the strategy of adjusting the damping coefficients significantly when switching footwear. Despite damping being the preferred adjustment to changes in footwear, muscle pre-tuning might not be the only mechanism to influence damping as previously suggested. Future studies should focus on the subject-specific composition of soft-tissue compartments to elucidate their contribution to vibrations.

Corneal Vibrations during Intraocular Pressure Measurement with an Air-Puff Method.

Project description:Introduction:The paper presents a commentary on the method of analysis of corneal vibrations occurring during eye pressure measurements with air-puff tonometers, for example, Corvis. The presented definition and measurement method allow for the analysis of image sequences of eye responses-cornea deformation. In particular, the outer corneal contour and sclera fragments are analysed, and 3D reconstruction is performed. Methods:On this basis, well-known parameters such as eyeball reaction or corneal response are determined. The next steps of analysis allow for automatic and reproducible separation of four different corneal vibrations. These vibrations are associated with (1) the location of the maximum of cornea deformation; (2) the cutoff area measured in relation to the cornea in a steady state; (3) the maximum of peaks occurring between applanations; and (4) the other characteristic points of the corneal contour. Results:The results obtained enable (1) automatic determination of the amplitude of vibrations; (2) determination of the frequency of vibrations; and (3) determination of the correlation between the selected types of vibrations. Conclusions:These are diagnostic features that can be directly applied clinically for new and archived data.
