Carbenaporphyrins: No Longer Missing Ligands in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry.

ABSTRACT: The synthesis of an NHC-containing porphyrinoid ligand is presented. The formally antiaromatic 20??e^- macrocyclic framework can be obtained via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition ("click-reaction") to form two triazole moieties which were alkylated to the respective triazolium macrocycle. Deprotonation of the ligand precursor with lithium bases to the respective dilithio carbenaporphyrin complex and transmetallation to scandium lead to complexes that exhibit orange fluorescence. Optical property combined with TD-DFT studies verify an aromatic character for each heterocyclic moiety rather than an antiaromatic macrocycle in the ligand precursor as well as in the complexes. While the geometric features of the carbenaporphyrin ligand strongly resemble those of porphyrin, DFT calculations reveal a stronger electron-donating ability of the new ligand.

Project description:A series of methylpalladium(II) complexes with pyrimidine-NHC ligands carrying different aryl- and alkyl substituents R ([((pym)^(NHC-R))Pd(II)(CH3)X] with X = Cl, CF3COO, CH3) has been prepared by transmetalation reactions from the corresponding silver complexes and chloro(methyl)(cyclooctadiene)palladium(II). The dimethyl(1-(2-pyrimidyl)-3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene)palladium(II) complex was synthesized via the free carbene route. All complexes were fully characterized by standard methods and in three cases also by a solid state structure.

Harnessing asymmetric N-heterocyclic carbene ligands to optimise SABRE hyperpolarisation.

Project description:The catalytic signal amplification by reversible exchange process has become widely used for the hyperpolarisation of small molecules to improve their magnetic resonance detectability. It harnesses the latent polarisation of parahydrogen, and involves the formation of a labile metal complex that often contains an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand (e.g. [Ir(H)2(NHC)(pyridine)3]Cl), which act as a polarisation transfer catalyst. Unfortunately, if the target molecule is too bulky, binding to the catalyst is poor and the hyperpolarisation yield is therefore low. We illustrate here the behaviour of a series of asymmetric NHC containing catalysts towards 3,4- and 3,5-lutidine in order to show how catalyst design can be used to dramatically improve the outcome of this catalytic process for sterically encumbered ligands.

Influence of bulky yet flexible N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in gold catalysis.

Project description:Three new Au(I) complexes of the formula [Au(NHC)(NTf2)] (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) bearing bulky and flexible ligands have been synthesised. The ligands studied are IPent, IHept and INon which belong to the 'ITent' ('Tent' for 'tentacular') family of NHC derivatives. The effect of these ligands in gold-promoted transformations has been investigated.

Conformations of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in ruthenium complexes relevant to olefin metathesis.

Project description:The structure of ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalyst 3 and model pi-complex 5 in solution and in the solid state are reported. The N-tolyl ligands, due to their lower symmetry than the traditional N-mesityl substituents, complicate this analysis, but ultimately provide explanation for the enhanced reactivity of 3 relative to standard catalyst 2. The tilt of the N-tolyl ring provides additional space near the ruthenium center, which is consistent with the enhanced reactivity of 3 toward sterically demanding substrates. Due to this tilt, the more sterically accessible face bears the two methyl substituents of the N-aryl rings. These experimental studies are supported by computational studies of these complexes by DFT. The experimental data provides a means to validate the accuracy of the B3LYP and M06 functionals. B3LYP provides geometries that match X-ray crystal structural data more closely, though it leads to slightly less (approximately 0.5 kcal mol-1) accuracy than M06 most likely because it underestimates attractive noncovalent interactions.

Gold(I) Complexes Stabilized by Nine- and Ten-Membered N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands.

Project description:Nine- and ten-membered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been developed and for the first time their gold(I) complexes were synthesized. The protonated NHC pro-ligands 2?a-h were prepared by the reaction of readily available N,N'-diarylformamidines with bis-electrophilic building blocks, followed by anion exchange. In situ deprotonation of the tetrafluoroborates 2?a-h with tBuOK in the presence of AuCl(SMe2 ) provided fast access to NHC-gold(I) complexes 3-10. These new NHC-gold(I) complexes show very good catalytic activity in a cycloisomerization reaction (0.1?mol?% catalyst loading, up to 100?% conversion) and their solid-state structures reveal high steric hindrance around the metal atom (%Vbur up to 53.0) which is caused by their expanded-ring architecture.

Activation Mechanism of Nickel(0) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts Stabilized by Fumarate Ligands

Project description:Nickel(0) catalysts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) that are stabilized by electron-deficient alkenes possess desirable properties of air tolerance and ease of handling while also retaining high catalytic activities. Since catalyst stability often comes at the expense of catalytic activity, we have undertaken a detailed study of the activation mechanism of an IMes-nickel(0) catalyst stabilized by di(o-tolyl) fumarate that converts the stable precatalyst form into a catalytically active species. Computational evaluation provided evidence against a simple ligand exchange as the activation mechanism for this catalyst, and a stoichiometric activation process that covalently modifies the stabilizing ligand was identified. A detailed computational picture for the activation process was developed, with predictive insights that elucidate an unexpected catalyst activation pathway that operates when ligand exchange is thermodynamically unfavorable. Manganese(III) complexes stabilized with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands for alcohol oxidation catalysis.

Project description:The chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes with Earth-abundant manganese has largely focused on low-valent systems for reductive catalysis. Here, we have decorated imidazole- and triazole-derived carbenes with phenol substituents to access higher-valent Mn(III) complexes [Mn(O,C,O)(acac)], where acac = acetylacetonato, and O,C,O = bis(phenolate)imidazolylidene (1) or bis(phenolate)triazolylidene (2). Both complexes catalyze the oxidation of alcohols in the presence of tBuOOH as terminal oxidant. Complex 2 is slightly more active than 1 (TOF up to 540 h-1vs. 500 h-1), yet significantly more robust towards deactivation. Secondary and primary alcohols are oxidized, the latter with high selectivity and essentially no overoxidation of the aldehyde product to carboxylic acids unless the reaction time is substantially extended. Mechanistic investigations using Hammett parameters, IR spectroscopy, isotope labelling experiments, and specific substrates and oxidants as probes support the formation of a manganese(V) oxo system as the active species and subsequent turnover-limiting hydrogen atom abstraction.

This work represents an empirical evidence of the molecular modifications that an imidazole skeleton undergoes upon protonation, alkylation, and metalation.

Thiazol-2-ylidenes as N-Heterocyclic carbene ligands with enhanced electrophilicity for transition metal catalysis.

Project description:Over the last 20 years, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as a dominant direction in ligand development in transition metal catalysis. In particular, strong σ-donation in combination with tunable steric environment make NHCs to be among the most common ligands used for C-C and C-heteroatom bond formation. Herein, we report the study on steric and electronic properties of thiazol-2-ylidenes. We demonstrate that the thiazole heterocycle and enhanced π-electrophilicity result in a class of highly active carbene ligands for electrophilic cyclization reactions to form valuable oxazoline heterocycles. The evaluation of steric, electron-donating and π-accepting properties as well as structural characterization and coordination chemistry is presented. This mode of catalysis can be applied to late-stage drug functionalization to furnish attractive building blocks for medicinal chemistry. Considering the key role of N-heterocyclic ligands, we anticipate that N-aryl thiazol-2-ylidenes will be of broad interest as ligands in modern chemical synthesis.

Thermal Growth of Au-Fe Heterometallic Carbonyl Clusters Containing N-Heterocyclic Carbene and Phosphine Ligands.

Project description:The thermal reactions of [NEt4][Fe(CO)4(AuNHC)] [NHC = IMes ([NEt4][1]) or IPr ([NEt4][2]); IMes = C3N2H2(C6H2Me3)2; IPr = C3N2H2(C6H3iPr2)2], Fe(CO)4(AuNHC)2 [NHC = IMes (3) or IPr (4)], Fe(CO)4(AuIMes)(AuIPr) (5), and Fe(CO)4(AuNHC)(AuPPh3) [NHC = IMes (6) or IPr (7)] were investigated in different solvents [CH2Cl2, CH3CN, dimethylformamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide (dmso)] and at different temperatures (50-160 °C) in an attempt to obtain higher-nuclearity clusters. 1 and 2 completely decomposed in refluxing CH2Cl2, resulting in [Fe2(CO)8(AuNHC)]- [NHC = IMes (10) or IPr (11)]. Traces of [Fe3(CO)10(CCH3)]- (12) were obtained as a side product. Conversely, 6 decomposed in refluxing CH3CN, affording the new cluster [Au3{Fe(CO)4}2(PPh3)2]- (15). The relative stability of the two isomers found in the solid state structure of 15 was computationally investigated. 4 was very stable, and only after prolonged heating above 150 °C in dmso was limited decomposition observed, affording small amounts of [Fe3S(CO)9]2- (9), [HFe(CO)4]- (16), and [Au16S{Fe(CO)4}4(IPr)4]n+ (17). A dicationic nature for 17 was proposed on the basis of density functional theory calculations. All of the other reactions examined led to species that were previously reported. The molecular structures of the new clusters 11, 12, 15, and 17 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as their [NEt4][11]·1.5toluene, [Au(IMes)2][15]·0.67CH2Cl2, [NEt4][12], and [17][BF4]n·solvent salts, respectively.
