Composite of bentonite and cyclodextrin as an efficient catalyst for promoting chemical transformations in aqueous media.

ABSTRACT: Combining the encapsulating capability of cyclodextrin and instinctive features of bentonite clay, a versatile metal free catalyst has been developed that could promote various chemical reactions such as Knoevenagel condensation, synthesis of xanthan and octahydroquinazolinones in aqueous media under ultrasonic irradiation. To prepare the catalyst, bentonite was Cl-functionalized and then reacted with isatin and guanidine successively to furnish amino functionalized bentonite. The latter then reacted with tosylated cyclodextrin. The resultant catalytic composite was characterized via XRD, SEM, EDS, BET, elemental mapping analysis, TGA and FTIR. The catalytic activity tests approved excellent activity of the catalyst as well as broad substrate scope. Notably, the catalyst could be simply recovered and reused for several reaction runs. Moreover, the activity of the composite was superior to that of its components.

Project description:A new pyridine-pyrazole N-N ligand has been conveniently synthesized and characterized by ¹H-, ¹³C-NMR, IR spectroscopies, HRMS and X-ray single-crystal crystallography analyses. The ligand adds to palladium(II) under basic conditions to give high yields of an air-stable and water-soluble complex that was fully characterized by NMR and HRMS. The complex was investigated as a catalyst for the Suzuki reaction in aqueous media under microwave irradiation. The compound proved to be an effective catalyst.

Visible light-driven efficient palladium catalyst turnover in oxidative transformations within confined frameworks.

Project description:Palladium catalyst turnover by reoxidation of a low-valent Pd species dominates the proceeding of an efficient oxidative transformation, but the state-of-the-art catalysis approaches still have great challenges from the perspectives of high efficiency, atom-economy and environmental-friendliness. Herein, we report a new strategy for addressing Pd reoxidation problem by the fabrication of spatially proximate IrIII photocatalyst and PdII catalyst into metal-organic framework (MOF), affording MOFs based Pd/photoredox catalysts UiO-67-Ir-PdX2 (X = OAc, TFA), which are systematically evaluated using three representative Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions. Owing to the stabilization of single-site Pd and Ir catalysts by MOFs framework as well as the proximity of them favoring fast electron transfer, UiO-67-Ir-PdX2, under visible light, exhibits up to 25 times of Pd catalyst turnover number than the existing catalysis systems. Mechanism investigations theoretically corroborate the capability of MOFs based Pd/photoredox catalysis to regulate the competitive processes of Pd0 aggregation and reoxidation in Pd-catalyzed oxidation reactions.

Preparation of a Novel Millet Straw Biochar-Bentonite Composite and Its Adsorption Property of Hg2+ in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:The remediation of mercury (Hg) contaminated soil and water requires the continuous development of efficient pollutant removal technologies. To solve this problem, a biochar-bentonite composite (CB) was prepared from local millet straw and bentonite using the solution intercalation-composite heating method, and its physical and chemical properties and micromorphology were then studied. The prepared CB and MB (modified biochar) had a maximum adsorption capacity for Hg2+ of 11.722 and 9.152 mg·g-1, respectively, far exceeding the corresponding adsorption value of biochar and bentonite (6.541 and 2.013 mg·g-1, respectively).The adsorption of Hg2+ on the CB was characterized using a kinetic model and an isothermal adsorption line, which revealed that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal model well represented the adsorption of Hg2+ on the CB, indicating that the adsorption was mainly chemical adsorption of the monolayer. Thermodynamic experiments confirmed that the adsorption process of Hg2+ by the CB was spontaneous and endothermic. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that after Hg2+ was adsorbed by CB, functional groups, such as the -OH group (or C=O, COO-, C=C) on the CB, induced complexation between Hg and -O-, and part of Hg (ii) was reduced Hg (i), resulting in the formation of single or double tooth complexes of Hg-O- (or Hg-O-Hg). Therefore, the prepared composite (CB) showed potential application as an excellent adsorbent for removing heavy metal Hg2+ from polluted water compared with using any one material alone.

Highly Efficient Method for Suzuki Reactions in Aqueous Media.

Project description:Herein, we report the crystal structure and characterization of mono-6-(l-aminopropanol)-deoxy-β-cyclodextrin (L n @β-CD). A highly efficient, in situ generated catalyst, PdCl2(L n @β-CD), was synthesized for palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions under mild reaction conditions, and the use of this catalyst in Suzuki cross-couplings was investigated. Low palladium loadings of 0.01 mol % PdCl2(L n @β-CD) (Pd accounted for approximately 8.4% of the catalyst by mass) were found to be highly efficient for Suzuki cross-couplings in water and afforded the corresponding biaryl compounds in excellent yields. The catalyst can be recycled and reused.

Project description:A study on room temperature Suzuki cross-coupling in an aqueous medium was carried out using a simple hydrophilic palladium (II) complex, trans-PdCl2(NH2CH2COOH)2 as catalyst in the presence of K2CO3 in air. This approach with a comparatively inexpensive and hydrophilic catalyst, mild reaction condition and aqueous media exhibits excellent catalytic activity towards the Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides and arylboronic acids, and good yields were obtained in the Suzuki coupling of activated aryl chlorides.

Chemical Transformations in Proto-Cytoplasmic Media. Phosphorus Coupling in the Silica Hydrogel Phase.

Project description:It has been proposed that prebiotic chemical studies on the emergence of primitive life would be most relevant when performed in a hydrogel, rather than an aqueous, environment. In this paper we describe the ambient temperature coupling of phosphorus oxyacids [Pi] mediated by Fe(II) under aerobic conditions within a silica hydrogel (SHG) environment. We have chosen to examine SHGs as they have considerable geological precedence as key phases in silicification en route to rock formation. Following a description of the preparation and characterization studies on our SHG formulations, coupling experiments between Pi species are described across multiple permutations of (i) Pi compound; (ii) gel formulation; (iii) metal salt additive; and (iv) pH-modifying agent. The results suggest that successful Pi coupling, indicated by observation of pyrophosphate [PPi(V)] via 31P-NMR spectroscopy, takes place when the following components are present: (i) a mixture of mixture of Pi(III) and Pi(V) or pure PPi(III-V); (ii) Fe(II); (iii) acetic or formic acid (not hydrochloric acid); (iv) aerobic conditions or the presence of H₂O₂ as an oxidant; and (v) the presence of a gel system. On the basis of these, and aqueous control reactions, we suggest mechanistic possibilities.

A SnO2/CeO2 Nano-Composite Catalyst for Alizarin Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:A new SnO2/CeO2 nano-composite catalyst was synthesized, characterized and used for the removal of alizarin dyes from aqueous solutions. The composite material was prepared using a precipitation method. X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methodology (BET) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) were utilized for the characterization of the prepared composite. The prepared nano-composite revealed high affinity for the adsorption and decomposition of alizarin dyes. The adsorption capacity under different experimental conditions (adsorbate concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose and pH) was examined. Under optimized experimental conditions, the removal of alizarin yellow, alizarin red and alizarin-3-methylimino-diacetic acid dyes from aqueous solutions was about 96.4%,87.8% and 97.3%, respectively. The adsorption isotherms agreed with the models of Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherms.

Staudinger ligation towards cyclodextrin dimers in aqueous/organic media. Synthesis, conformations and guest-encapsulation ability.

Project description:β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) dimers have been prepared using the bioorthogonal Staudinger ligation for the first time. In addition to a known linker, methyl 2-(diphenylphosphanyl)terephthalate, a doubly active linker was specifically developed that enabled connection of two β-CD units in a single step and in aqueous/organic media, under mild conditions and with good yields. A three-carbon spacer between the β-CD torus and the azido group was required for facile dimer formation. The products, as studied by NMR spectroscopy, were found to adopt closed conformations by intramolecular self-inclusion. On the other hand, association via intermolecular binding was also observed in aqueous solution, confirmed by DOSY NMR experiments. Despite self-inclusion, the β-CD cavities were capable of guest encapsulation, as shown by titration experiments: the binding constant with 1-adamantylamine was similar to that of natural β-CD. Theoretical calculations for isolated molecules (PM3 level of theory) and in the presence of solvent [water, PM3(COSMO)] as well as DFT calculations suggested that the compounds prefer to adopt conformations which bring the phenyl groups either inside the β-CD cavity (inclusion) or over its narrow side (vicinal). Thus, Staudinger ligation could be the method of choice for linking CDs exhibiting (i) ease of preparation in aqueous media, in short steps, under mild conditions and in good yields, (ii) satisfactory aqueous solubility and independent binding capacity of the cavities.

Rational design of galactopyranoside-substituted <i>N</i>-heterocyclic carbene palladium(ii) complexes. Stable and efficient catalyst for C-C coupling in aqueous media.

Project description:Following a rational design, three novel palladium(ii) complexes bearing galactopyranoside-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been synthesized via transmetalation of the corresponding Ag(i) complexes. Palladium(ii) complexes have been characterized by NMR, FT-IR and elemental analysis. Catalytic studies, using the Stille and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions as model C-C coupling, reveal that the complexes are active and reusable. The best results in terms of TON values were achieved in aqueous medium using either the in situ deacetylation of the catalyst or the previously deacetylated catalyst. The catalytic condition using in situ deacetylation was more efficient because it avoids an additional deprotection step.

Project description:The application of immobilized sulfuric acid on silica gel (H2SO4-SiO2) as an efficient and easily reusable solid catalyst was explored in the synthesis of novel α-acyloxycarboxamide derivatives via a Passerini reaction of benzoic acid, aldehyde/ketone, and isocyanides. The Passerini adducts were obtained in high to excellent yields within 10 min in aqueous media under catalytic conditions. The key advantages of the process include a short reaction time, high yields, the catalyst's low cost, and the catalyst's reusability.
