A series of nickel(ii) tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) complexes featuring appended hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) to halides (F, Cl, Br) was synthesized and charcterized. Project description:Manipulation of molecular crystals formed from self-organization is one of the important methods to develop the new molecular functional materials. In particular, we look upon mutual cohesive interactions of hydrogen bonding and metal coordination as one useful tool to construct the preprogramming superstructures. In this study, five controlled superstructures of a one-dimensional linear chain--a zigzag ribbon, right-handed and left-handed helices, and a two-dimensional honeycomb sheet--are newly created by using the neutral metal complexes with some 2,2'-biimidazolate mono-anions.

Project description:The nucleophilic reactivity of fluoride ion is altered in the presence of hydrogen-bond donors, including alcohols. Relatively little is known about the coordination involved; to rectify this, the X-ray structures of fourteen novel fluoride-alcohol complexes with tetrabutylammonium as the counterion have been determined. The coordination number varies from two to four depending on the steric bulk of the alcohol and is closely linked to trends in reactivity. This diversity in coordination stoichiometry is unprecedented but significant, as it implies differences in the ability of the fluoride-alcohol complexes to dissociate in solution with release of a more active and/or selective fluoride source.

Project description:Though local structures in ionic liquids are dominated by strong Coulomb forces, directional hydrogen bonds can also influence the physicochemical properties of imidazolium-based ionic liquids. In particular, the C-2 position of the imidazolium cation is acidic and can bind with suitable hydrogen bond acceptor sites of molecular solvents dissolved in imidazolium-based ionic liquids. In this report, we identify hydrogen-bonded microenvironments of the model ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tris(pentafluoroethyl) trifluorophosphate, and the changes that occur when molecular solvents are dissolved in it by using a C-D infrared reporter at the C-2 position of the cation. Our linear and nonlinear infrared experiments, along with computational studies, indicate that the molecular solvent dimethyl sulfoxide can form strong hydrogen-bonded dimers with the cation of the ionic liquid at the C-2 position. In contrast, acetone, which is also a hydrogen bond acceptor similar to dimethyl sulfoxide, does not show evidence of cation-solvent hydrogen-bonded conformers at the C-2 position. The outcome of our study on a broad scale strengthens the importance of cation-solute interactions in ionic liquids.

Project description:Variations in hydrogen-bond strengths are investigated for complexes of nine para-substituted phenols (XPhOH) with a water molecule and chloride ion. Results from ab initio HF/6-311+G(d, p) and MP2/6-311+G(d, p)//HF/6-311+G(d, p) calculations are compared with those from the OPLS-AA and OPLS/CM1A force fields. In the OPLS-AA model, the partial charges on the hydroxyl group of phenol are not affected by the choice of para substituent, while the use of CM1A charges in the OPLS/CM1A approach does provide charge redistribution. The ab initio calculations reveal a 2.0-kcal/mol range in hydrogen-bond strengths for the XPhOH⋯OH(2) complexes in the order X = NO(2) > CN > CF(3) > Cl > F > H >OH >CH(3) > NH(2). The pattern is not well-reproduced with OPLS-AA, which also compresses the variation to 0.7 kcal/mol. However, the OPLS/CM1A results are in good accord with the ab initio findings for both the ordering and range, 2.3 kcal/mol. The hydrogen bonding is, of course, weaker with XPhOH as acceptor, the order for X is largely inverted, and the range is reduced to ca. 1.0 kcal/mol. The substituent effects are found to be much greater for the chloride ion complexes with a range of 11 kcal/mol. For quantitative treatment of such strong ion-molecule interactions the need for fully polarizable force fields is demonstrated.

Project description:Phosphinopyridyl ligands are used to synthesize a class of Ni(II) bis(chelate) complexes, which have been comprehensively characterized in both solid and solution phases. The structures display a square-planar configuration within the primary coordination sphere, with axially positioned labile binding sites. Their electrochemical data reveal two redox couples during the reduction process, suggesting the possibility of accessing two-electron reduction states. Significantly, these complexes serve as robust catalysts for homogeneous photocatalytic H2 evolution. In a system utilizing an organic photosensitizer and a sacrificial electron donor, an optimal turnover number of 27,100 is achieved in an alcohol-containing aqueous solution. A series of photophysical and electrochemical measurements were conducted to elucidate the reaction mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Density function theory calculations propose a catalytic pathway involving two successive one-electron reduction steps, followed by two proton discharges. The sustained photocatalytic activity of these complexes stems from their distinct ligand system, which includes phosphine and pyridine donors that aid in stabilizing the low oxidation states of the Ni center.

Project description:Hydrogen positions in hydrides play a key role in hydrogen storage materials and high-temperature superconductors. Our recently published study of five crystal structures of transition-metal-bound hydride complexes showed that using aspherical atomic scattering factors for Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) resulted in a systematic elongation of metal-hydrogen bonds compared to using spherical scattering factors with the Independent Atom Model (IAM). Even though only standard-resolution X-ray data was used, for the highest-quality data, we obtained excellent agreement between the X-ray and the neutron-derived bond lengths. We present an extended version of this study including 10 crystal structures of metal-organic complexes containing hydrogen atoms bonded to transition-metal atoms for which both X-ray and neutron data are available. The neutron structures were used as a benchmark, and the X-ray structures were refined by applying Hirshfeld atom refinement using various basis sets and DFT functionals in order to investigate the influence of the technical aspects on the length of metal-hydrogen bonds. The result of including relativistic effects in the Hamiltonian and using a cluster of multipoles simulating interactions with a crystal environment during wave function calculations was examined. The effect of the data quality on the final result was also evaluated. The study confirms that a high quality of experimental data is the key factor allowing us to obtain significant improvement in transition metal (TM)-hydrogen bond lengths from HAR in comparison with the IAM. Individual adjustments and better choices of the basis set can improve hydrogen positions. Average differences between TM-H bond lengths obtained with various DFT functionals upon including relativistic effects or between double-ζ and triple-ζ basis sets were not statistically significant. However, if all bonds formed by H atoms were considered, significant differences caused by different refinement strategies were observed. Finally, we examined the refinement of atomic thermal motions. Anisotropic refinement of hydrogen thermal motions with HAR was feasible only in some cases, and isotropically refined hydrogen thermal motions were in similar agreement with neutron values whether obtained with HAR or with the IAM.

Project description:In order to investigate ring-size effects on the stability and spectral shifts of hydrogen bonded cyclic ethers complexes, the strength of hydrogen bonds in gas phase complexes formed between 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) and selected cyclic ethers were examined using FTIR spectroscopy. TFE was chosen as hydrogen bond donor in these complexes, while trimethylene oxide (TMO), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and tetrahydropyran (THP) were selected as hydrogen bond acceptors. Comparable OH-stretching red shifts were observed in the three kinds of complexes. The difference of red shifts is so small (<7 cm-1) for TFE-TMO/THF/THP complexes that one can conclude that their stabilities and the strength of the hydrogen bonds are nearly similar and do not show any marked dependence with the ring size of the hydrogen bond acceptor. The equilibrium constants for the complexation were determined, and atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to further investigate the intermolecular interactions. Regardless of the ring size, hydrogen bonds in the complexes showed similar strength, in agreement with the observed OH-stretching red shifts.

Project description:The compound [Ni(L)(isoph)₂][Ni(L)]·8H₂O (1; L = C-meso-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane; H₂-isoph = isophthalic acid) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Complex 1 exhibits a geometrically symmetric core with a {4/6} coordination number set. The coordination environment around the Ni(1) ion is a distorted octahedron, while the geometry around the four-coordinate Ni(2) is depicted as square planar in 1D hydrogen-bonded infinite chain. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic system P-1 with a = 8.602(2), b = 10.684(7), c = 16.550(3) Å, a = 91.04(4), b = 94.09(2), g = 111.09(4)°, V = 1413.9(10) ų, Z = 1. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 undergoes one-electron wave corresponding to NiII/NiI process. The electronic spectra, electrochemical and TGA behavior of the complex are significantly affected by the nature of the hexamethyltetraaza macrocycle and the axial isoph²⁻ ligand.

Project description:A series of square-planar nickel hydride complexes supported by bis(phosphinite) pincer ligands with varying substituents (-OMe, -Me, and -Bu t ) on the pincer backbone have been synthesized and completely characterized by NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. Their cyclic voltammograms show irreversible oxidation peaks (peak potentials from 101 to 316 mV vs. Fc+/Fc) with peak currents consistent with overall one-electron oxidations. Chemical oxidation by the one-electron oxidant Ce(NBu4)2(NO3)6 was studied by NMR spectroscopy, which provided quantitative evidence for post-oxidative H2 evolution leading to a solvent-coordinated nickel(ii) species with the pincer backbone intact. Bulk electrolysis of the unsubstituted nickel hydride (3a) showed an overall one-electron stoichiometry and gas chromatographic analysis of the headspace gas after electrolysis further confirmed stoichiometric production of dihydrogen. Due to the extremely high rate of the post-oxidative chemical process, electrochemical simulations have been used to establish a lower limit of the bimolecular rate constant (kf > 107 M-1 s-1) for the H2 evolution step. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fastest known oxidative H2 evolution process observed in transition metal hydrides. Quantum chemical calculations based on DFT indicate that the one-electron oxidation of the nickel hydride complex provides a strong chemical driving force (-90.3 kcal mol-1) for the production of H2 at highly oxidizing potentials.
