Synthesis of Vertically Aligned ZnO Nanorods Using Sol-gel Seeding and Colloidal Lithography Patterning.

ABSTRACT: Different ZnO nanostructures can be grown using low-cost chemical bath deposition. Although this technique is cost-efficient and flexible, the final structures are usually randomly oriented and hardly controllable in terms of homogeneity and surface density. In this work, we use colloidal lithography to pattern (100) silicon substrates to fully control the nanorods' morphology and density. Moreover, a sol-gel prepared ZnO seed layer was employed to compensate for the lattice mismatch between the silicon substrate and ZnO nanorods. The results show a successful growth of vertically aligned ZnO nanorods with controllable diameter and density in the designated openings in the patterned resist mask deposited on the seed layer. Our method can be used to fabricate optimized devices where vertically ordered ZnO nanorods of high crystalline quality are crucial for the device performance.

Ag-Decorated Vertically Aligned ZnO Nanorods for Non-Enzymatic Glucose Sensor Applications.

Project description:The non-enzymatic glucose sensing response of pure and Ag-decorated vertically aligned ZnO nanorods grown on Si substrates was investigated. The simple low-temperature hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize the ZnO NRs on the Si substrates, and then Ag decoration was achieved by sputtering. The crystal structure and surface morphologies were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ag incorporation on the ZnO NR surfaces was confirmed using EDS mapping and spectra. Furthermore, the chemical states, the variation in oxygen vacancies, and the surface modifications of Ag@ZnO were investigated by XPS analysis. Both the glucose/ZnO/Si and glucose/Ag@ZnO/Si device structures were investigated for their non-enzymatic glucose sensing performances with different glucose concentrations. Based on EIS measurements and amperometric analysis, the Ag@ZnO-NR-based glucose sensor device exhibited a better sensing ability with excellent stability over time than pure ZnO NRs. The Ag@ZnO NR glucose sensor device recorded 2792 µA/(mM·cm2) sensitivity with a lowest detection limit of 1.29 µM.

Hydrothermal Growth of Vertically Aligned ZnO Nanorods Using a Biocomposite Seed Layer of ZnO Nanoparticles.

Project description:Well aligned ZnO nanorods have been prepared by a low temperature aqueous chemical growth method, using a biocomposite seed layer of ZnO nanoparticles prepared in starch and cellulose bio polymers. The effect of different concentrations of biocomposite seed layer on the alignment of ZnO nanorods has been investigated. ZnO nanorods grown on a gold-coated glass substrate have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques. These techniques have shown that the ZnO nanorods are well aligned and perpendicular to the substrate, and grown with a high density and uniformity on the substrate. Moreover, ZnO nanorods can be grown with an orientation along the c-axis of the substrate and exhibit a wurtzite crystal structure with a dominant (002) peak in an XRD spectrum and possessed a high crystal quality. A photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy study of the ZnO nanorods has revealed a conventional near band edge ultraviolet emission, along with emission in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum due to defect emission. This study provides an alternative method for the fabrication of well aligned ZnO nanorods. This method can be helpful in improving the performance of devices where alignment plays a significant role.

Self-aligned colloidal lithography for controllable and tuneable plasmonic nanogaps.

Project description:Au nanoparticles (NPs) deposited on a substrate function as ring shaped colloidal shadow masks. Using e-beam evaporation of gold, nanometer sized gaps are formed as a result. The size of these gaps can be accurately tuned by controlling the thickness of the gold deposition, thereby tuning the plasmonic coupling of the NPs with the substrate. The clean cavity produced between the Au NPs and the Au film provides an excellent SERS platform for trace molecule detection.

Single molecule protein patterning using hole mask colloidal lithography.

Project description:The ability to manipulate single protein molecules on a surface is useful for interfacing biology with many types of devices in optics, catalysis, bioengineering, and biosensing. Control of distance, orientation, and activity at the single molecule level will allow for the production of on-chip devices with increased biological activity. Cost effective methodologies for single molecule protein patterning with tunable pattern density and scalable coverage area remain a challenge. Herein, Hole Mask Colloidal Lithography is presented as a bench-top colloidal lithography technique that enables a glass coverslip to be patterned with functional streptavidin protein onto patches from 15-200 nm in diameter with variable pitch. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to characterize the size of the patterned features on the glass surface. Additionally, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy was used to demonstrate the tunable pattern density, measure binding controls, and confirm patterned single molecules of functional streptavidin.

Controlled Growth of Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites through a Au Seeding-Assisted Method.

Project description:Heteroepitaxial metal-oxide vertically aligned nanocomposites (VAN) have piqued significant interest due to their remarkable vertical interfacial coupling effects, strong structural and property anisotropy, and potential applications in magnetoelectrics, photocatalysts, and optical metamaterials. VANs present a unique pillar-in-matrix structure with uniform but rather random pillar distributions. Achieving a well-controlled pillar growth remains a major challenge in this field. Here, we use BaTiO3 (BTO)-Au as a model VAN system to demonstrate the effects of Au seedings on achieving such pillar-growth control with enhanced ordering and morphology tuning. The Au seedings are introduced using an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template through pulsed laser deposition (PLD). TEM characterization reveals that the Au seedings result in straighter and more evenly distributed Au pillars in the BTO matrix compared to those without seeding, with the diameter of the Au seedings increasing with the number of pulses. Additionally, spectroscopic ellipsometry demonstrates distinct permittivity dispersion for all samples. This demonstration lays a foundation for future controlled and selective growth of VAN systems for on-chip integration.

Enhanced UV photosensitivity from rapid thermal annealed vertically aligned ZnO nanowires.

Project description:We report on the major improvement in UV photosensitivity and faster photoresponse from vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) by means of rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The ZnO NWs were grown by vapor-liquid-solid method and subsequently RTA treated at 700°C and 800°C for 120 s. The UV photosensitivity (photo-to-dark current ratio) is 4.5 × 103 for the as-grown NWs and after RTA treatment it is enhanced by a factor of five. The photocurrent (PC) spectra of the as-grown and RTA-treated NWs show a strong peak in the UV region and two other relatively weak peaks in the visible region. The photoresponse measurement shows a bi-exponential growth and bi-exponential decay of the PC from as-grown as well as RTA-treated ZnO NWs. The growth and decay time constants are reduced after the RTA treatment indicating a faster photoresponse. The dark current-voltage characteristics clearly show the presence of surface defects-related trap centers on the as-grown ZnO NWs and after RTA treatment it is significantly reduced. The RTA processing diminishes the surface defect-related trap centers and modifies the surface of the ZnO NWs, resulting in enhanced PC and faster photoresponse. These results demonstrated the effectiveness of RTA processing for achieving improved photosensitivity of ZnO NWs.

Thermal Evaporation Synthesis of Vertically Aligned Zn2SnO4/ZnO Radial Heterostructured Nanowires Array.

Project description:The construction of a heterostructured nanowires array allows the simultaneous manipulation of the interfacial, surface, charge transport, and transfer properties, offering new opportunities to achieve multi-functionality for various applications. Herein, we developed facile thermal evaporation and post-annealing method to synthesize ternary-Zn2SnO4/binary-ZnO radially heterostructured nanowires array (HNA). Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires array (3.5 μm in length) were grown on a ZnO-nanoparticle-seeded, fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate by a hydrothermal method. Subsequently, the amorphous layer consisting of Zn-Sn-O complex was uniformly deposited on the surface of the ZnO nanowires via the thermal evaporation of the Zn and Sn powder mixture in vacuum, followed by post-annealing at 550 °C in air to oxidize and crystallize the Zn2SnO4 shell layer. The use of a powder mixture composed of elemental Zn and Sn (rather than oxides and carbon mixture) as an evaporation source ensures high vapor pressure at a low temperature (e.g., 700 °C) during thermal evaporation. The morphology, microstructure, and charge-transport properties of the Zn2SnO4/ZnO HNA were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Notably, the optimally synthesized Zn2SnO4/ZnO HNA shows an intimate interface, high surface roughness, and superior charge-separation and -transport properties compared with the pristine ZnO nanowires array.

Performance of colloidal CdS sensitized solar cells with ZnO nanorods/nanoparticles.

Project description:As an alternative photosensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells, bovine serum albumin (BSA) (a nonhazardous protein) was used in the synthesis of colloidal CdS nanoparticles (NPs). This system has been employed to replace the commonly used N719 dye molecule. Various nanostructured forms of ZnO, namely, nanorod and nanoparticle-based photoanodes, have been sensitized with colloidal CdS NPs to evaluate their effective performance towards quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). A polysulphide (S x2-)-based electrolyte and Cu x S counter electrode were used for cell fabrication and testing. An interesting improvement in the performance of the device by imposing nanorods as a scattering layer on a particle layer has been observed. As a consequence, a maximum conversion efficiency of 1.06% with an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.67 V was achieved for the ZnO nanorod/nanoparticle assembled structure. The introduction of ZnO nanorods over the nanoparticle led to a significant enhancement of the overall efficiency compared to the corresponding bare nanoparticles.

Facile fabrication of self-assembled nanostructures of vertically aligned gold nanorods by using inkjet printing.

Project description:We demonstrated that the vertically aligned gold nanorods (AuNRs) were quickly and easily formed by using inkjet printing when aqueous dispersion of AuNRs containing a small amount of ethylene glycol (EG) was employed as an ink. It was observed that the content of EG in water suppressed rapid drying and convection in the droplets, which is favorable for the formation of the nanostructures.

Sol-Gel-Deposited Ti-Doped ZnO: Toward Cell Fouling Transparent Conductive Oxides.

Project description:Ti-doped ZnO thin films were obtained with the aim of tailoring ZnO film bioadhesiveness and making the optoelectronic properties of ZnO materials transferable to biological environments. The films were prepared on silicon substrates by sol-gel spin-coating and subsequent annealing. A Ti-O segregation limits the ZnO crystallite growth and creates a buffer out-layer. Consequently, the Ti-doped ZnO presents slightly increased resistivity, which remains in the order of 10-3 Ω·cm. The strong biochemical interference of Zn2+ ions released from pure ZnO surfaces was evidenced by culturing Staphylococcus epidermidis with and without the Zn2+ coupling agent clioquinol. The Ti-doped ZnO surfaces showed a considerable increase of bacterial viability with respect to pure ZnO. Cell adhesion was assayed with human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Although hMSCs find difficulties to adhere to the pure ZnO surface, they progressively expand on the surface of ZnO when the Ti doping is increased. A preliminary microdevice has been built on the Si substrate with a ZnO film doped with 5% Ti. A one-dimensional micropattern with a zigzag structure shows the preference of hMSCs for adhesion on Ti-doped ZnO with respect to Si. The induced contrast of surface tension further induces a cell polarization effect on hMSCs. It is suggested that the presence of Ti-O covalent bonding on the doped surfaces provides a much more stable ground for bioadhesion. Such fouling behavior suggests an influence of Ti doping on film bioadhesiveness and sets the starting point for the selection of optimal materials for implantable optoelectronic devices.
