The complete chloroplast genome of Toona sinensis, an important economic and medicinal plant endemic in China.

ABSTRACT: Toona sinensis is an economic and medicinal plant endemic in China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of T. sinensis was assembled using the second-generation high-throughput sequencing data. The genome consists of 138 genes in total, including 89 protein-coding genes, 7 ribosomal RNA genes, 40 transfer RNA genes and 2 pseudogenes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that T. sinensis has a close relationship with the Toona ciliata with strong support. The chloroplast genome presented here provides a valuable resource to conserve this valuable species.

Characteristic of the complete chloroplast genome of Symphoricarpos sinensis, an important ornamental plant endemic to China.

Project description:Symphoricarpos sinensis is an important ornamental plant in China. Due to the lack of efficient molecular markers, although recent studies supported that Symphoricarpos was phylogenetically closely related to Lonicera, Triosteum, Heptacodium, and Leycesteria, relationships among these taxa remained uncertain. To examine the phylogenetic position of Symphoricarpos within Caprifoliaceae, we characterized the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of S. sinensis. The results showed that S. sinensis shared a typical quadripartite structure as with most angiosperms. It was 155,738 bp in length, including two inverted repeat (IR) regions (24,010 bp), a small single-copy (SSC) region (18,942 bp) and a large single-copy (LSC) region (88,776 bp). Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that Caprifoliaceae and Adoxaceae formed two distinct monophyletic clades, and S. sinensis was closely related to lonicera and Triosteum, albeit with low support. The whole cp genome of S. sinensis will be useful resources for future studies on phylogeny and conservation in Symphoricarpos.

The complete chloroplast genome of Berchemia lineata, an important medicinal plant from China.

Project description:Brechemia lineata is a well-known medicinal plant in the Rhamnaceae family and widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. Here, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome using Illumina pair-end sequencing data. The chloroplast genome was 154,962 bp in length, consisting of a large single-copy (LSC) region of 82,928 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,376 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 27,329 bp. The chloroplast genome consists of 112 unique genes, including 78 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA, and 4 ribosomal RNA genes. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome was 37.0%. The phylogenetic analysis suggests close relationship of B. lineata with other Berchemia species. These genomic resources will be valuable resource for systematic and phylogenetic studies of Berchemia genus.

The complete chloroplast genome of Tetrastigma planicaule, one important folk medicinal plant in China.

Project description:We announce here the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of Tetrastigma planicaule, one important Chinese folk medicinal plant. This complete chloroplast genome is 160,323 bp in length. In total, 131 genes were identified, including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that Tetrastigma is a separate genus and is closely related to Vitis.

Complete chloroplast genome of Isoetes sinensis, an endemic fern in China.

Project description:Isoetes sinensis is the only aquatic pteridophyte in China with high research value of phylogeny. It is in endangered status. A conservation strategy is therefore imperative for this endangered pteridophyte. In the study, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Isoetes sinensis (Isoetaceae) was assembled and annotated. It is the full length of 145,492 bp, include large single-copy (LSC) region of 91,865 bp, small single-copy (SSC) region of 13,207 bp, and a pair of invert repeats (IR) regions of 27,213 bp. Plastid genome contains 135 genes, 71 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis suggested I. sinensis was most closely related to the clade of I. melanospora, I. mattaponica, I. graniticola, I. engelmannii, I. flaccida, I. valida, and I. butleri, with strong support (bootstrap = 100%). The cp genome will contribute to further research and conservation of I. sinensis.

Complete chloroplast genome of Toona sinensis (Meliaceae), a goluptious 'tree vegetables'.

Project description:Toona sinensis, also known as Xiangchun in Chinese, is a popular 'tree vegetables' and famous medicinal plant with good economic value. In our study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of T. sinensis using the llumina sequencing platform. The cp genome of T. sinensis is a characteristic four-party structure with a length of 157,228 bp, which contains two 26,994 bp inverted repeats (IRs), an 85,971 bp large single copy (LSC), and a 17,269 bp small single copy (SSC). We identified a total of 126 genes, of which clouding 82 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that T. sinensis was closely related to the congeneric T. ciliata.

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of Peganum harmala, an important medicinal plant.

Project description:Peganum harmala is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Peganum, Nitrariaceae and is mainly distributed in dry areas in the Mediterranean and many Asia countries. This plant species has high medicinal value and considerable ecological value. This article reports the first chloroplast genome of species in Peganum. The size of the P. harmala chloroplast genome is 160,070 bp, including a large single-copy (LSC) region (88,279 bp), a small single-copy (SSC) region (26,468 bp), and two reverse (IR) regions (18,856 bp). The P. harmala chloroplast genome consists of 132 genes, including 83 protein-coding genes, 38 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes. The GC content of P. harmala chloroplast genome is 36.44%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that P. harmala and another Nitrariaceaeis species formed a single blade in the phylogenetic tree.

Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the cp genome of A. austroyunnanense is closely related to that of Aconitum hemsleyanum.

The complete chloroplast genome of Physochlaina physaloides (Solanaceae), an important medicinal plant.

Project description:Physochlaina is an important perennial herbaceous genus with significant medicinal value, while the phylogeny of Physochlaina and tribe Hyoscyameae is not well resolved yet. In this study, we report the complete chloroplast genome sequences of Ph. physaloides, its complete chloroplast genome is 156,413 bp in length, which is a typical quadripartite structure that includes a large single-copy region of 86,659 bp, a small single-copy region of 18,012 bp, and its GC content was 37.7%. A total of 132 genes were identified, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Furthermore, a phylogenetic tree of the tribe Hyoscyameae was constructed based the complete chloroplast genome sequence, and a new topology of the tribe was obtained. This study provides valuable genetic information for the conservation and utilization of Ph. physaloides and also provide the potential for better understanding of the phylogeny of Hyoscyameae and Solanaceae.

Project description:Forsythia mira M. C. Chang (Oleaceae) is an endemic medicinal shrub in China. In this study, we first characterized its whole plastid genome sequence using the Illumina sequencing platform. The plastid genome was 156,485 bp in length, comprising of a large single copy (LSC) region of 87,223 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 17,830 bp, and two inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 51,432 each. The genome of F. mira contained 133 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNAs (tRNA), and 8 ribosomal RNAs (rRNA). The phylogenetic analysis showed that F. mira was placed as a sister to the congeneric F. suspensa.

The chloroplast genome of Ostericum citriodorum (Apiaceae), an endemic medicinal plant to China.

Project description:Ostericum citriodorum is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb endemic to Southeast and South China, but now is becoming very rare because of rapid habit loss. The complete chloroplast genome of O. citriodorum was sequenced herein and suggested that the complete chloroplast genome was 155,919 bp in length, comprising the large single-copy (LSC) region of 85,393 bp, the small single-copy (SSC) region of 19,760 bp, and a pair of inverted regions (IRs) of 25,383 bp. Totally 127 genes were distributed in the whole genome, including 4 rRNAs, 37 tRNAs, and 81 protein coding genes. The G + C content of this chloroplast genome was 38%. Phylogenetic inference revealed that O. citriodorum was accompanied with Pterygopleurum neurophyllum and sister to O. palustre, indicating a close relationship between Ostericum and Pterygopleurum.
