Visualizing weather radar data from volcanic eruption clouds.

ABSTRACT: This paper is submitted to accompany the article "Analyses of three-dimensional weather radar data from volcanic eruption clouds" [1]; it describes three-dimensional (3D) visualizations of the Sakurajima volcanic eruption clouds and the weather radar data used for analyses, as well as their availability and downloading procedures. The radar data were acquired by an operational X-band weather radar located approximately 11 km south of the Showa vent of Sakurajima in Kagoshima, Japan. The original raw radar data are available from the "XRAIN Precipitation Original Data search and Download System", which is hosted on the website "Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS)". Animated images of the radar data shown here, which provide a visual explanation of the temporal evolution and the inner structure of volcanic eruption clouds, were created using the program "Analysis Tools of Three-dimensional Weather Radar Data (AN3D)". The detailed methods of ANT3D are provided in the co-submitted article "Construction of three-dimensional weather radar data from volcanic eruption clouds" [2].

Construction of three-dimensional weather radar data from volcanic eruption clouds.

Project description:Analysis tools of three-dimensional weather radar data (ANT3D) was originally developed at the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster prevention (NIED) to retrieve three-dimensional (3D) precipitation and wind fields for convective storms. In 2013, Kagoshima University significantly revised ANT3D for analyses of volcanic eruption clouds, mainly to improve the temporal and spatial interpolation of radar data and estimation of the advection vector, which is required for temporal interpolation. Detailed information pertaining to these algorithms is listed as additional information in this paper.•Procedures necessary for the construction of three-dimensional (3D) volcanic cloud weather radar data are described.•An algorithm based on temporal and elevation angle interpolation methods was used to create 3D constant altitude plan position indicator (3D CAPPI) data with high temporal and spatial resolution.•Two programs (ANT3D_GUI and the CAPPI viewer) are provided for readers interested in analyzing volcanic eruption cloud radar data.

Nano-volcanic Eruption of Silver.

Project description:Silver (Ag) is one of the seven metals of antiquity and an important engineering material in the electronic, medical, and chemical industries because of its unique noble and catalytic properties. Ag thin films are extensively used in modern electronics primarily because of their oxidation-resistance. Here we report a novel phenomenon of Ag nano-volcanic eruption that is caused by interactions between Ag and oxygen (O). It involves grain boundary liquation, the ejection of transient Ag-O fluids through grain boundaries, and the decomposition of Ag-O fluids into O2 gas and suspended Ag and Ag2O clusters. Subsequent coating with re-deposited Ag-O and the de-alloying of O yield a conformal amorphous Ag coating. Patterned Ag hillock arrays and direct Ag-to-Ag bonding can be formed by the homogenous crystallization of amorphous coatings. The Ag "nano-volcanic eruption" mechanism is elaborated, shedding light on a new mechanism of hillock formation and new applications of amorphous Ag coatings.

Volcanic monitoring of the 2021 La Palma eruption using long-period magnetotelluric data.

Project description:Between September and December 2021, the first subaerial volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands in 50 years took place on the island of La Palma. Since November 2021, we have been conducting a long-period magnetotelluric (MT) monitoring experiment at a site located 2.4 km east of the volcanic cone. Having continuously recorded data since then, the obtained dataset shows significant changes in resistivity over the fourteen months following the eruption: more than ± 20% in apparent resistivity and ± 2 degrees in phase. These temporal variations in electrical resistivity, recorded continuously using long-period MT during both the syn- and post-eruptive stages, have not been reported to date, making this dataset unique. Four estimated impedances have been selected as representatives of the major temporal changes observed and inverted to generate new 3-D resistivity models. The results provide novel key information on the spatiotemporal evolution of the subsoil's electrical resistivity, enabling the characterization of a set of structures acting as preferred magmatic fluid pathways. Therefore, our study highlights the strong potential of MT as a volcanic monitoring tool and provides new insights about the evolution of the fluid pathways during the post-eruptive stage. These findings enhance our understanding of the magmatic system and may contribute to volcanic hazard mitigation in the future.

Controls on explosive-effusive volcanic eruption styles.

Project description:One of the biggest challenges in volcanic hazard assessment is to understand how and why eruptive style changes within the same eruptive period or even from one eruption to the next at a given volcano. This review evaluates the competing processes that lead to explosive and effusive eruptions of silicic magmas. Eruptive style depends on a set of feedback involving interrelated magmatic properties and processes. Foremost of these are magma viscosity, gas loss and external properties such as conduit geometry. Ultimately, these parameters control the speed at which magmas ascend, decompress and outgas en route to the surface, and thus determine eruptive style and evolution.

Dataset for trailer angle estimation using radar point clouds.

Project description:The automotive industry is interested in the estimation of vehicle trailer rotation (trailer angle or hitch angle) due to its use in trailer control algorithms. We present an experimental dataset collected in a study of the estimation problem [1] and a MATLAB code implementation of the study. The data collection apparatus is a truck mock-up that is attached to a flatbed trailer at the hitch ball. Two radars are installed in the taillight fixtures of the truck and a camera is installed in the truck's tailgate like a typical backup camera installation. A rotary motion sensor is also installed at the hitch ball to provide ground truth measurement of the trailer angle. To aid analysis of the dataset, both radar detections are transformed onto a vehicle coordinate system (VCS) having its origin at the hitch ball i.e. the different radar viewpoints are combined into one with respect to the hitch ball. The MATLAB code presented with this article has two major functionalities. The first functionality is the visualization of both radar detections, the combined radar detections in the VCS, the camera images, and the ground truth angles, as the trailer rotates. The second functionality of the code is the replication of the estimation results in [1], which used only the radar detections from the dataset.

Volcanic crystals as time capsules of eruption history.

Project description:Crystals formed prior to a volcanic event can provide evidence of processes leading to and timing of eruptions. Clinopyroxene is common in basaltic to intermediate volcanoes, however, its ability as a recorder of pre-eruptive histories has remained comparatively underexplored. Here we show that novel high-resolution trace element images of clinopyroxene track eruption triggers and timescales at Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy). Chromium (Cr) distribution in clinopyroxene from 1974 to 2014 eruptions reveals punctuated episodes of intrusion of primitive magma at depth. Magma mixing efficiently triggered volcanism (success rate up to 90%), within only 2 weeks of arrival of mafic intrusions. Clinopyroxene zonations distinguish between injections of mafic magma and regular recharges with more evolved magma, which often fail to tip the system to erupt. High Cr zonations can therefore be used to reconstruct past eruptions and inform responses to geophysical signals of volcano unrest, potentially offering an additional approach to volcano hazard monitoring.

Rapid laccolith intrusion driven by explosive volcanic eruption.

Project description:Magmatic intrusions and volcanic eruptions are intimately related phenomena. Shallow magma intrusion builds subsurface reservoirs that are drained by volcanic eruptions. Thus, the long-held view is that intrusions must precede and feed eruptions. Here we show that explosive eruptions can also cause magma intrusion. We provide an account of a rapidly emplaced laccolith during the 2011 rhyolite eruption of Cordón Caulle, Chile. Remote sensing indicates that an intrusion began after eruption onset and caused severe (>200 m) uplift over 1 month. Digital terrain models resolve a laccolith-shaped body ∼0.8 km3. Deformation and conduit flow models indicate laccolith depths of only ∼20-200 m and overpressures (∼1-10 MPa) that likely stemmed from conduit blockage. Our results show that explosive eruptions may rapidly force significant quantities of magma in the crust to build laccoliths. These iconic intrusions can thus be interpreted as eruptive features that pose unique and previously unrecognized volcanic hazards.

The Campanian Ignimbrite eruption: new data on volcanic ash dispersal and its potential impact on human evolution.

Project description:The Campanian Ignimbrite (CI) volcanic eruption was the most explosive in Europe in the last 200,000 years. The event coincided with the onset of an extremely cold climatic phase known as Heinrich Event 4 (HE4) approximately 40,000 years ago. Their combined effect may have exacerbated the severity of the climate through positive feedbacks across Europe and possibly globally. The CI event is of particular interest not only to investigate the role of volcanism on climate forcing and palaeoenvironments, but also because its timing coincides with the arrival into Europe of anatomically modern humans, the demise of Neanderthals, and an associated major shift in lithic technology. At this stage, however, the degree of interaction between these factors is poorly known, based on fragmentary and widely dispersed data points. In this study we provide important new data from Eastern Europe which indicate that the magnitude of the CI eruption and impact of associated distal ash (tephra) deposits may have been substantially greater than existing models suggest. The scale of the eruption is modelled by tephra distribution and thickness, supported by local data points. CI ashfall extends as far as the Russian Plain, Eastern Mediterranean and northern Africa. However, modelling input is limited by very few data points in Eastern Europe. Here we investigate an unexpectedly thick CI tephra deposit in the southeast Romanian loess steppe, positively identified using geochemical and geochronological analyses. We establish the tephra as a widespread primary deposit, which blanketed the topography both thickly and rapidly, with potentially catastrophic impacts on local ecosystems. Our discovery not only highlights the need to reassess models for the magnitude of the eruption and its role in climatic transition, but also suggests that it may have substantially influenced hominin population and subsistence dynamics in a region strategic for human migration into Europe.

A weather surveillance radar view of Alaskan avian migration.

Project description:Monitoring avian migration within subarctic regions of the globe poses logistical challenges. Populations in these regions often encounter the most rapid effects of changing climates, and these seasonally productive areas are especially important in supporting bird populations-emphasizing the need for monitoring tools and strategies. To this end, we leverage the untapped potential of weather surveillance radar data to quantify active migration through the airspaces of Alaska. We use over 400 000 NEXRAD radar scans from seven stations across the state between 1995 and 2018 (86% of samples derived from 2013 to 2018) to measure spring and autumn migration intensity, phenology and directionality. A large bow-shaped terrestrial migratory system spanning the southern two-thirds of the state was identified, with birds generally moving along a northwest-southeast diagonal axis east of the 150th meridian, and along a northeast-southwest axis west of this meridian. Spring peak migration ranged from 3 May to 30 May and between, 18 August and 12 September during the autumn, with timing across stations predicted by longitude, rather than latitude. Across all stations, the intensity of migration was greatest during the autumn as compared to spring, highlighting the opportunity to measure seasonal indices of net breeding productivity for this important system as additional years of radar measurements are amassed.

Revised Minoan eruption volume as benchmark for large volcanic eruptions.

Project description:Despite their global societal importance, the volumes of large-scale volcanic eruptions remain poorly constrained. Here, we integrate seismic reflection and P-wave tomography datasets with computed tomography-derived sedimentological analyses to estimate the volume of the iconic Minoan eruption. Our results reveal a total dense-rock equivalent eruption volume of 34.5 ± 6.8 km³, which encompasses 21.4 ± 3.6 km³ of tephra fall deposits, 6.9 ± 2 km³ of ignimbrites, and 6.1 ± 1.2 km³ of intra-caldera deposits. 2.8 ± 1.5 km³ of the total material consists of lithics. These volume estimates are in agreement with an independent caldera collapse reconstruction (33.1 ± 1.2 km³). Our results show that the Plinian phase contributed most to the distal tephra fall, and that the pyroclastic flow volume is significantly smaller than previously assumed. This benchmark reconstruction demonstrates that complementary geophysical and sedimentological datasets are required for reliable eruption volume estimates, which are necessary for regional and global volcanic hazard assessments.
