Project description:Germanium, with a high theoretical capacity based on alloyed lithium and germanium (1384 mA h g-1 Li15Ge4), has stimulated tremendous research as a promising candidate anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, due to the alloying reaction of Li/Ge, the problems of inferior cycle life and massive volume expansion of germanium are equally obvious. Among all Ge-based materials, the unique layered 2D germanane (GeH and GeCH3) with a graphene-like structure, obtained by a chemical etching process from the Zintl phase CaGe2, could enable storage of large quantities of lithium between their interlayers. Besides, the layered structure has the merit of buffering the volume expansion due to the tunable interlayer spacing. In this work, the beyond theoretical capacities of 1637 mA h g-1 for GeH and 2048 mA h g-1 for GeCH3 were achieved in the initial lithiation reaction. Unfortunately, the dreadful capacity fading and electrode fracture happened during the subsequent electrochemical process. A solution, i.e. introducing single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into the structure of the electrodes, was found and further confirmed to improve their electrochemical performance. More noteworthy is the GeH/SWCNT flexible electrode, which exhibits a capacity of 1032.0 mA h g-1 at a high current density of 2000 mA g-1 and a remaining capacity of 653.6 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at 500 mA g-1. After 100 cycles, the hybrid germanane/SWCNT electrodes maintained good integrity without visible fractures. These results indicate that introducing SWCNTs into germanane effectively improves the electrochemical performance and maintains the integrity of the electrodes for LIBs.

Project description:In coatings technology, the possibility of introducing specific characteristics at the surface level allows for the manufacture of medical devices with efficient and prolonged antibacterial properties. This efficiency is often achieved by the use of a small amount of antibacterial molecules, which can fulfil their duty while limiting eventual releasing problems. The object of this work was the preparation and characterization of silver, titanium dioxide and chitosan polyurethane-based coatings. Coatings with the three antibacterials were prepared using different deposition techniques, using a brush or a bar coater automatic film applicator, and compared to solvent casted films prepared with the same components. For silver containing materials, an innovative strategy contemplating the use and preparation of silver nanoparticles in a single step-method was employed. This preparation was obtained starting from a silver precursor and using a single compound as the reducing agent and stabilizer. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and adhesion test experiments were used to characterize the prepared coatings. Promising antibacterial properties, measured via direct and indirect methods, were registered for all the silver-based materials.

Project description:Hydrogel films used as membranes or coatings are essential components of devices interfaced with biological systems. Their design is greatly challenged by the need to find mild synthesis and processing conditions that preserve their biocompatibility and the integrity of encapsulated compounds. Here, we report an approach to produce hydrogel films spontaneously in aqueous polymer solutions. This method uses the solvent depletion created at the surface of swelling polymer substrates to induce the gelation of a thin layer of polymer solution. Using a biocompatible polymer that self-assembles at high concentration [poly(vinyl alcohol)], hydrogel films were produced within minutes to hours with thicknesses ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers. A simple model and numerical simulations of mass transport during swelling capture the experiments and predict how film growth depends on the solution composition, substrate geometry, and swelling properties. The versatility of the approach was verified with a variety of swelling substrates and hydrogel-forming solutions. We also demonstrate the potential of this technique by incorporating other solutes such as inorganic particles to fabricate ceramic-hydrogel coatings for bone anchoring and cells to fabricate cell-laden membranes for cell culture or tissue engineering.

Project description:In the context of transitioning toward a more sustainable use of natural resources, the application of lignin to substitute commonly utilized petroleum-based plastics can play a key role. Although lignin is highly available at low cost and presents interesting properties, such as antioxidant and UV barrier activities, its application is limited by its low reactivity, which is a consequence of harsh conditions normally used to extract lignin from biomass. In this work, the use of glyoxylic acid lignin (GA lignin), rich in carboxylic acid groups and hence highly reactive toward epoxy cross-linkers, is presented. GA lignin, which is directly extracted from biomass via a one-step aldehyde-assisted fractionation process, allowed the preparation of thermoset films and coatings via a simple reaction with sustainable poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and glycerol diglycidyl ether cross-linkers. This allows one to prepare freestanding films containing up to 70 wt % lignin with tunable mechanical properties and covalently surface-attached coatings containing up to 90 wt % lignin with high solvent resistance. Both films and coatings display antioxidant properties and combine excellent UV barrier activity with high visible transparency, which is attractive for applications in sustainable food packaging.

Project description:Vertex models are an important class of statistical mechanical system that admit exact solutions and exotic physics. Applications include water ice, ferro- and antiferro-electrics, spin ice and artificial spin ice. Here we show that it is possible to engineer spin ice films with atomic-layer precision down to the monolayer limit. Specific heat measurements show that these films, which have a fundamentally different symmetry to bulk spin ice, realise systems close to the two-dimensional F-model, with exotic phase transitions on topologically-constrained configurational manifolds. Our results show how spin ice thin films can release the celebrated Pauling entropy of spin ice without an anomaly in the specific heat. They also significantly expand the class of vertex models available to experiment.

Project description:Prosthesis loosening due to lack of osteointegration between an implant and surrounding bone tissue is one of the most common causes of implant failure. Further, bacterial contamination and biofilm formation onto implants represent a serious complication after surgery. The enhancement of osteointegration can be achieved by using bioconductive materials that promote biological responses in the body, stimulating bone growth and thus bonding to tissue. Through the incorporation of antibacterial substances in bioconductive, biodegradable calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings, faster osteointegration and bactericidal properties can be achieved. In this study, Cu-doped CaP supraparticles are spray-dried and suspension-sprayed CaP ceramic coatings with antibacterial properties are prepared using high-velocity suspension flame spraying (HVSFS). The objective was to increase the coatings' porosity and investigate which Cu-doped supraparticles have the strongest antibacterial properties when introduced into the coating layers. Biocompatibility was tested on human Osteosarcoma cells MG63. A porosity of at least 13% was achieved and the supraparticles could be implemented, enhancing it up to 16%. The results showed that the addition of Cu-doped supraparticles did not significantly reduce the number of viable cells compared to the Cu-free sample, demonstrating good biocompatibility. The antimicrobial activity was assessed against the bacterial strains Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with Safe Airborne Antibacterial testing showing a significant reduction in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains on the Cu-doped coatings.

Project description:Biocompatible antibacterial coatings are highly desirable to prevent bacterial colonization on a wide range of medical devices from hip implants to skin grafts. Traditional polyelectrolytes are unable to directly form coatings with cationic antibiotics at neutral pH and suffer from high degrees of antibiotic release upon exposure to physiological concentrations of salt. Here, novel inorganic-organic hybrid polymer coatings based on direct layer-by-layer assembly of anionic polyphosphazenes (PPzs) of various degrees of fluorination with cationic antibiotics (polymyxin B, colistin, gentamicin, and neomycin) are reported. The coatings displayed low levels of antibiotic release upon exposure to salt and pH-triggered response of controlled doses of antibiotics. Importantly, coatings remained highly surface active against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, even after 30 days of pre-exposure to physiological conditions (bacteria-free) or after repeated bacterial challenge. Moreover, coatings displayed low (<1%) hemolytic activity for both rabbit and porcine blood. Coatings deposited on either hard (Si wafers) or soft (electrospun fiber matrices) materials were non-toxic towards fibroblasts (NIH/3T3) and displayed controllable fibroblast adhesion via PPz fluorination degree. Finally, coatings showed excellent antibacterial activity in ex vivo pig skin studies. Taken together, these results suggest a new avenue to form highly tunable, biocompatible polymer coatings for medical device surfaces.

Project description:World hunger is on the rise, yet one-third of food is wasted. It is necessary to develop an effective food preservation method to reduce food waste. This article reports a composite film based on chitosan biguanidine hydrochloride(CBg) and poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)(PVP) that can be used as a conformal coating for fresh produce. Due to the strong positive charge of CBg, the film has excellent antibacterial properties. Owing to the hydrogen bonds between CBg and PVP, the film has good flexibility and mechanical properties. In addition, the coating is washable, transparent, and can reduce the evaporation of water. The above characteristics mean the film has broad application prospects in the field of food preservation.

Project description:AimTo demonstrate the design, fabrication and testing of conformable conducting biomaterials that encourage cell alignment.Materials & methodsThin conducting composite biomaterials based on multilayer films of poly(3.4-ethylenedioxythiophene) derivatives, chitosan and gelatin were prepared in a layer-by-layer fashion. Fibroblasts were observed with fluorescence microscopy and their alignment (relative to the dipping direction and direction of electrical current passed through the films) was determined using ImageJ.ResultsFibroblasts adhered to and proliferated on the films. Fibroblasts aligned with the dipping direction used during film preparation and this was enhanced by a DC current.ConclusionWe report the preparation of conducting polymer-based films that enhance the alignment of fibroblasts on their surface which is an important feature of a variety of tissues.

Project description:In this study, evaporation-induced size segregation and interparticle interactions are harnessed to tune the microstructure of photocatalytic colloidal coatings containing TiO2 nanoparticles and polymer particles. This enabled the fabrication of a library of five distinct microstructures: TiO2-on-top stratification, a thin top layer of polymer or TiO2, homogeneous films of raspberry particles, and a sandwich structure. The photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of the coatings were evaluated by testing the viability of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria using the ISO-27447 protocol, showing a strong correlation with the microstructure. UVA irradiation for 4 h induces a reduction in MRSA viability in all coating systems, ranging from 0.6 to 1.1 log. Films with TiO2-enriched top surfaces exhibit better resistance to prolonged exposure to disinfection and bacterial testing. The remaining systems, nonetheless, present higher antibacterial activity because of a larger number of pores and coating defects that enhance light and water accessibility for the generation and transport of reactive oxygen species. This work establishes design rules for photocatalytic coatings based on the interplay between performance and film architecture, offering valuable insights for several applications, including antibacterial surfaces, self-cleaning/antifogging applications, and water purification.
