Effective Hamiltonian for silicene under arbitrary strain from multi-orbital basis.

ABSTRACT: A tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonian is derived for strained silicene from a multi-orbital basis. The derivation is based on the Slater-Koster coupling parameters between different orbitals across the silicene lattice and takes into account arbitrary distortion of the lattice under strain, as well as the first and second-order spin-orbit interactions (SOI). The breaking of the lattice symmetry reveals additional SOI terms which were previously neglected. As an exemplary application, we apply the linearized low-energy TB Hamiltonian to model the current-induced spin accumulation in strained silicene coupled to an in-plane magnetization. The interplay between symmetry-breaking and the additional SOI terms induces an out-of-plane spin accumulation. This spin accumulation remains unbalanced after summing over the Fermi surfaces of the occupied bands and the two valleys, and can thus be utilized for spin torque switching.

Analytical solution for nonadiabatic quantum annealing to arbitrary Ising spin Hamiltonian.

Project description:Ising spin Hamiltonians are often used to encode a computational problem in their ground states. Quantum Annealing (QA) computing searches for such a state by implementing a slow time-dependent evolution from an easy-to-prepare initial state to a low energy state of a target Ising Hamiltonian of quantum spins, HI. Here, we point to the existence of an analytical solution for such a problem for an arbitrary HI beyond the adiabatic limit for QA. This solution provides insights into the accuracy of nonadiabatic computations. Our QA protocol in the pseudo-adiabatic regime leads to a monotonic power-law suppression of nonadiabatic excitations with time T of QA, without any signature of a transition to a glass phase, which is usually characterized by a logarithmic energy relaxation. This behavior suggests that the energy relaxation can differ in classical and quantum spin glasses strongly, when it is assisted by external time-dependent fields. In specific cases of HI, the solution also shows a considerable quantum speedup in computations.

Spiniform phase-encoded metagratings entangling arbitrary rational-order orbital angular momentum.

Project description:Quantum entanglements between integer-order and fractional-order orbital angular momentums (OAMs) have been previously discussed. However, the entangled nature of arbitrary rational-order OAM has long been considered a myth due to the absence of an effective strategy for generating arbitrary rational-order OAM beams. Therefore, we report a single metadevice comprising a bilaterally symmetric grating with an aperture, creating optical beams with dynamically controllable OAM values that are continuously varying over a rational range. Due to its encoded spiniform phase, this novel metagrating enables the production of an average OAM that can be increased without a theoretical limit by embracing distributed singularities, which differs significantly from the classic method of stacking phase singularities using fork gratings. This new method makes it possible to probe the unexplored niche of quantum entanglement between arbitrarily defined OAMs in light, which could lead to the complex manipulation of microparticles, high-dimensional quantum entanglement and optical communication. We show that quantum coincidence based on rational-order OAM-superposition states could give rise to low cross-talks between two different states that have no significant overlap in their spiral spectra. Additionally, future applications in quantum communication and optical micromanipulation may be found.

Mechanical response of bilayer silicene nanoribbons under uniaxial tension.

Project description:Understanding the behaviour of nanoscale systems is of great importance to tailor their properties. To this aim, we investigate the Young's modulus (YM) of defect-free and defective armchair bilayer silicene nanoribbons (SNRs), at room temperature, as a function of length and distance between layers. In this study, we perform molecular dynamics simulations using the environment-dependent interatomic potential to describe the interaction of the Si atoms. We show that the Young's modulus of pristine and defective bilayer SNRs increases with the ribbon length exhibiting size dependence. In general, YM of defective bilayer SNRs is smaller than the value obtained for the defect-free case, as a result of the number of missing bonds. In all cases, as the interlayer distance increases YM decreases and the buckling increases. It is shown that the YM exhibits a quadratic interlayer distance dependence. Finally, when only one layer has a mono-vacancy defect, the atomic stress distribution of the pristine layer is affected by the presence of the vacancy. This effect can be considered as a "ghost vacancy" since the deterioration of the pristine layer is similar to that shown by the defective one. These results show that YM of pristine and defective bilayer SNRs could be tailored for a given length and interlayer distance. It is also found that the fracture stress and the fracture strain of defective bilayers are both smaller than those obtained for the defect-free ones.

Generation of electromagnetic waves with arbitrary orbital angular momentum modes.

Project description:Recently, much attention has been focused on beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) for radio communication. Here we experimentally demonstrate a planar-spiral phase plate (planar-SPP) for generating arbitrary mixed OAM beams. This proposed planar-SPP uses the concept of transmit array antenna having a perforated substrate to control the outputting phase for generating beams carrying OAM with arbitrary modes. As demonstrations, three planar-SPPs with a single OAM mode and two mixed OAM modes around 94 GHz have been investigated with design and experiments in this paper, respectively. The typical experimental intensity and phase patterns show that the proposed method of generating OAM beams really works.

Two-electron two-nucleus effective Hamiltonian and the spin diffusion barrier.

Project description:Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and emerging quantum technologies rely on the spin transfer in electron-nuclear hybrid quantum systems. Spin transfers might be suppressed by larger couplings, e.g., hyperfine couplings suppressing nuclear dipolar flip-flops ("spin diffusion barrier"). We apply the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to a two-electron two-nucleus spin system involving dipolar and hyperfine couplings in their tensorial form and study possible polarization-transfer processes. Among the different effective Hamiltonian matrix elements investigated is an energy-conserving electron-nuclear four-spin flip-flop, which combines an electronic with a nuclear dipolar flip-flop. The relevance of this electron-nuclear four-spin flip-flop for nuclear spin diffusion close to electrons is supported by model fits of HypRes-on experimental data. We connect the closely related fields of magnetic resonance and quantum information and provide a model that explains how all nuclear spins can contribute to the hyperpolarization of the bulk without a spin diffusion barrier in DNP.

Estimating False Discovery Proportion Under Arbitrary Covariance Dependence.

Project description:Multiple hypothesis testing is a fundamental problem in high dimensional inference, with wide applications in many scientific fields. In genome-wide association studies, tens of thousands of tests are performed simultaneously to find if any SNPs are associated with some traits and those tests are correlated. When test statistics are correlated, false discovery control becomes very challenging under arbitrary dependence. In the current paper, we propose a novel method based on principal factor approximation, which successfully subtracts the common dependence and weakens significantly the correlation structure, to deal with an arbitrary dependence structure. We derive an approximate expression for false discovery proportion (FDP) in large scale multiple testing when a common threshold is used and provide a consistent estimate of realized FDP. This result has important applications in controlling FDR and FDP. Our estimate of realized FDP compares favorably with Efron (2007)'s approach, as demonstrated in the simulated examples. Our approach is further illustrated by some real data applications. We also propose a dependence-adjusted procedure, which is more powerful than the fixed threshold procedure.

Highly Effective Conductance Modulation in Planar Silicene Field Effect Devices Due to Buckling.

Project description:Silicene is an exciting two-dimensional material that shares many of graphene's electronic properties, but differs in its structural buckling. This buckling allows opening a bandgap in silicene through the application of a perpendicular electric field. Here we show that this buckling also enables highly effective modulation of silicene's conductance by means of an in-plane electric field applied through silicene side gates, which can be realized concurrently within the same silicene monolayer. We illustrate this by using silicene to implement Self-Switching Diodes (SSDs), which are two-dimensional field effect nanorectifiers realized within a single silicene monolayer. Our quantum simulation results show that the atomically-thin silicene SSDs, with sub-10 nm dimensions, achieve a current rectification ratio that exceeds 200, without the need for doping, representing a 30 fold enhancement over graphene SSDs. We attribute this enhancement to a bandgap opening due to the in-plane electric field, as a consequence of silicene's buckling. Our results suggest that silicene is a promising material for the realization of planar field effect devices.

Anomalous strain effect on the thermal conductivity of low-buckled two-dimensional silicene.

Project description:The thermal conductivity of two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, typically decreases when tensile strain is applied, which softens their phonon modes. Here, we report an anomalous strain effect on the thermal conductivity of monolayer silicene, a representative low-buckled two-dimensional (LB-2D) material. ReaxFF-based molecular dynamics simulations are performed to show that biaxially stretched monolayer silicene exhibits a remarkable increase in thermal conductivity, by as much as 10 times the freestanding value, with increasing applied strain in the range of [0, 0.1], which is attributed to increased contributions from long-wavelength phonons. A further increase in strain in the range of [0.11, 0.18] results in a plateau of the thermal conductivity in an oscillatory manner, governed by a unique dynamic bonding behavior under extreme loading. This anomalous effect reveals new physical insights into the thermal properties of LB-2D materials and may provide some guidelines for designing heat management and energy conversion devices based on such materials.

A Non-Orthogonal Block-Localized Effective Hamiltonian Approach for Chemical and Enzymatic Reactions.

Project description:The effective Hamiltonian-molecular orbital and valence bond (EH-MOVB) method based on non-orthogonal block-localized fragment orbitals has been implemented into the program CHARMM for molecular dynamics simulations of chemical and enzymatic reactions, making use of semiempirical quantum mechanical models. Building upon ab initio MOVB theory, we make use of two parameters in the EH-MOVB method to fit the barrier height and the relative energy between the reactant and product state for a given chemical reaction to be in agreement with experiment or high-level ab initio or density functional results. Consequently, the EH-MOVB method provides a highly accurate and computationally efficient QM/MM model for dynamics simulation of chemical reactions in solution. The EH-MOVB method is illustrated by examination of the potential energy surface of the hydride transfer reaction from trimethylamine to a flavin cofactor model in the gas phase. In the present study, we employed the semiempirical AM1 model, which yields a reaction barrier that is more than 5 kcal/mol too high. We use a parameter calibration procedure for the EH-MOVB method similar to that employed to adjust the results of semiempirical and empirical models. Thus, the relative energy of these two diabatic states can be shifted to reproduce the experimental energy of reaction, and the barrier height is optimized to reproduce the desired (accurate) value by adding a constant to the off-diagonal matrix element. The present EH-MOVB method offers a viable approach to characterizing solvent and protein-reorganization effects in the realm of combined QM/MM simulations.

Concealing arbitrary objects remotely with multi-folded transformation optics.

Project description:An invisibility cloak that can hide an arbitrary object external to the cloak itself has not been devised before. In this Letter, we introduce a novel way to design a remote cloaking device that makes any object located at a certain distance invisible. This is accomplished using multi-folded transformation optics to remotely generate a hidden region around the object that no field can penetrate and that does not disturb the far-field scattering electromagnetic field. As a result, any object in the hidden region can stay in position or move freely within that region and remain invisible. Our idea is further extended in order to design a remote illusion optics that can transform any arbitrary object into another one. Unlike other cloaking methods, this method would require no knowledge of the details of the object itself. The proposed multi-folded transformation optics will be crucial in the design of remote devices in a variety of contexts.
