Invariant plastic deformation mechanism in paramagnetic nickel-iron alloys.

ABSTRACT: The Invar anomaly is one of the most fascinating phenomena observed in magnetically ordered materials. Invariant thermal expansion and elastic properties have attracted substantial scientific attention and led to important technological solutions. By studying planar faults in the high-temperature magnetically disordered state of [Formula: see text], here we disclose a completely different anomaly. An invariant plastic deformation mechanism is characterized by an unchanged stacking fault energy with temperature within wide concentration and temperature ranges. This anomaly emerges from the competing stability between the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed structures and occurs in other paramagnetic or nonmagnetic systems whenever the structural balance exists. The present findings create a platform for tailoring high-temperature properties of technologically relevant materials toward plastic stability at elevated temperatures.

Grain Structure Engineering of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys by Intensive Plastic Deformation.

Project description:To explore an effective route of customizing the superelasticity (SE) of NiTi shape memory alloys via modifying the grain structure, binary Ni55Ti45 (wt) alloys were fabricated in as-cast, hot swaged, and hot-rolled conditions, presenting contrasting grain sizes and grain boundary types. In situ synchrotron X-ray Laue microdiffraction and in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction techniques were employed to unravel the underlying grain structure mechanisms that cause the diversity of SE performance among the three materials. The evolution of lattice rotation, strain field, and phase transformation has been revealed at the micro- and mesoscale, and the effect of grain structure on SE performance has been quantified. It was found that (i) the Ni4Ti3 and NiTi2 precipitates are similar among the three materials in terms of morphology, size, and orientation distribution; (ii) phase transformation happens preferentially near high-angle grain boundary (HAGB) yet randomly in low-angle grain boundary (LAGB) structures; (iii) the smaller the grain size, the higher the phase transformation nucleation kinetics, and the lower the propagation kinetics; (iv) stress concentration happens near HAGBs, while no obvious stress concentration can be observed in the LAGB grain structure during loading; (v) the statistical distribution of strain in the three materials becomes asymmetric during loading; (vi) three grain lattice rotation modes are identified and termed for the first time, namely, multi-extension rotation, rigid rotation, and nondispersive rotation; and (vii) the texture evolution of B2 austenite and B19' martensite is not strongly dependent on the grain structure.

Effect of Temperature on the Deformation Behavior of Copper Nickel Alloys under Sliding.

Project description:The microstructural evolution in the near-surface regions of a dry sliding interface has considerable influence on its tribological behavior and is driven mainly by mechanical energy and heat. In this work, we use large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study the effect of temperature on the deformation response of FCC CuNi alloys of several compositions under various normal pressures. The microstructural evolution below the surface, marked by mechanisms spanning grain refinement, grain coarsening, twinning, and shear layer formation, is discussed in depth. The observed results are complemented by a rigorous analysis of the dislocation activity near the sliding interface. Moreover, we define key quantities corresponding to deformation mechanisms and analyze the time-independent differences between 300 K and 600 K for all simulated compositions and normal pressures. Raising the Ni content or reducing the temperature increases the energy barrier to activate dislocation activity or promote plasticity overall, thus increasing the threshold stress required for the transition to the next deformation regime. Repeated distillation of our quantitative analysis and successive elimination of spatial and time dimensions from the data allows us to produce a 3D map of the dominating deformation mechanism regimes for CuNi alloys as a function of composition, normal pressure, and homologous temperature.

Transformation from slip to plastic flow deformation mechanism during tensile deformation of zirconium nanocontacts.

Project description:Various types of nanometer-sized structures have been applied to advanced functional and structural devices. Inherent structures, thermal stability, and properties of such nanostructures are emphasized when their size is decreased to several nanometers, especially, to several atoms. In this study, we observed the atomistic tensile deformation process of zirconium nanocontacts, which are typical nanostructures used in connection of nanometer-sized wires, transistors, and diodes, memory devices, and sensors, by in situ transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the contact was deformed via a plastic flow mechanism, which differs from the slip on lattice planes frequently observed in metals, and that the crystallinity became disordered. The various irregular relaxed structures formed during the deformation process affected the conductance.

Atomic-Scale Insights into the Deformation Mechanism of the Microstructures in Precipitation-Strengthening Alloys.

Project description:Clarifying the deformation behaviors of microstructures could greatly help us understand the precipitation-strengthening mechanism in alloys. However, it is still a formidable challenge to study the slow plastic deformation of alloys at the atomic scale. In this work, the phase-field crystal method was used to investigate the interactions between precipitates, grain boundary, and dislocation during the deformation processes at different degrees of lattice misfits and strain rates. The results demonstrate that the pinning effect of precipitates becomes increasingly strong with the increase of lattice misfit at relatively slow deformation with a strain rate of 10-4. The cut regimen prevails under the interaction between coherent precipitates and dislocations. In the case of a large lattice misfit of 19.3%, the dislocations tend to move toward the incoherent phase interface and are absorbed. The deformation behavior of the precipitate-matrix phase interface was also investigated. Collaborative deformation is observed in coherent and semi-coherent interfaces, while incoherent precipitate deforms independently of the matrix grains. The faster deformations (strain rate is 10-2) with different lattice misfits all are characterized by the generation of a large number of dislocations and vacancies. The results contribute to important insights into the fundamental issue about how the microstructures of precipitation-strengthening alloys deform collaboratively or independently under different lattice misfits and deformation rates.

Machine learning plastic deformation of crystals.

Project description:Plastic deformation of micron-scale crystalline solids exhibits stress-strain curves with significant sample-to-sample variations. It is a pertinent question if this variability is purely random or to some extent predictable. Here we show, by employing machine learning techniques such as regression neural networks and support vector machines that deformation predictability evolves with strain and crystal size. Using data from discrete dislocations dynamics simulations, the machine learning models are trained to infer the mapping from features of the pre-existing dislocation configuration to the stress-strain curves. The predictability vs strain relation is non-monotonic and exhibits a system size effect: larger systems are more predictable. Stochastic deformation avalanches give rise to fundamental limits of deformation predictability for intermediate strains. However, the large-strain deformation dynamics of the samples can be predicted surprisingly well.

Plastic deformation of protein monolayers.

Project description:Globular proteins are peculiar solids that display both local stability of their conformation and the ability to undergo large cooperative changes of shape (conformational changes). If one forces a large deformation of the molecule, such that the structure is necessarily changed, it is not obvious whether the deformed globule can still remain a solid or whether it will melt. Is it possible to plastically deform a protein? Here we investigate this question with a micro-mechanical experiment on a small region (approximately 10 molecules) of a protein monolayer adsorbed on a rigid surface. For the two proteins studied, albumin and myoglobin, we observed that the molecules can be substantially deformed (approximately 1-2 nm deformation) by comparatively small stresses applied for sufficiently long times. The deformation is irreversible, and the protein remains in the solid state (i.e., displays a nonzero shear modulus). The dynamics of the deformation is approximately logarithmic in time, similar to creep in solids. These results show that globular proteins adsorbed on a surface can be plastically deformed.

Sintering boron carbide ceramics without grain growth by plastic deformation as the dominant densification mechanism.

Project description:A new ceramic sintering approach employing plastic deformation as the dominant mechanism is proposed, at low temperature close to the onset point of grain growth and under high pressure. Based on this route, fully dense boron carbide without grain growth can be prepared at 1,675-1,700 °C and under pressure of (≥) 80 MPa in 5 minutes. The dense boron carbide shows excellent mechanical properties, including Vickers hardness of 37.8 GPa, flexural strength of 445.3 MPa and fracture toughness of 4.7 MPa•m(0.5). Such a process should also facilitate the cost-effective preparation of other advanced ceramics for practical applications.

Unconventional Deformation Behaviours of Nanoscaled High-Entropy Alloys.

Project description:The bulk high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit similar deformation behaviours as traditional metals. These bulk behaviours are likely an averaging of the behaviours exhibited at the nanoscale. Herein, in situ atomic-scale observation of deformation behaviours in nanoscaled CoCrCuFeNi face-centred cubic (FCC) HEA was performed. The deformation behaviours of this nanoscaled FCC HEA (i.e., nanodisturbances and phase transformations) were distinct from those of nanoscaled traditional FCC metals and corresponding bulk HEA. First-principles calculations revealed an obvious fluctuation of the stacking fault energy and stability difference at the atomic scale in the HEA. The stability difference was highlighted only in the nanoscaled HEA and induced unconventional deformation behaviours. Our work suggests that the nanoscaled HEA may provide more chances to discover the long-expected essential distinction between the HEAs and traditional metals.

Plastic Deformation Modes of CuZr/Cu Multilayers.

Project description:We synthesized CuZr/Cu multilayers and performed nanoindentation testing to explore the dependence of plastic deformation modes on the thickness of CuZr layers. The Cu layers were 18 nm thick and the CuZr layers varied in thickness from 4 nm to 100 nm. We observed continuous plastic co-deformation in the 4 nm and 10 nm CuZr - 18 nm Cu multilayers and plastic-induced shear instability in thick CuZr layers (>20 nm). The plastic co-deformation is ascribed to the nucleation and interaction of shear transformation zones in CuZr layers at the adjacent interfaces, while the shear instability is associated with the nucleation and propagation of shear bands in CuZr layers. Shear bands are initialized in the CuZr layers due to the accumulated glide dislocations along CuZr-Cu interfaces, and propagate into adjacent Cu layers via slips on {111} plane non-parallel to the interface. Due to crystallographic constraint of the Cu layers, shear bands are approximately parallel to {111} plane in the Cu layer.

IDSS: deformation invariant signatures for molecular shape comparison.

Project description:Many molecules of interest are flexible and undergo significant shape deformation as part of their function, but most existing methods of molecular shape comparison (MSC) treat them as rigid bodies, which may lead to incorrect measure of the shape similarity of flexible molecules.To address the issue we introduce a new shape descriptor, called Inner Distance Shape Signature (IDSS), for describing the 3D shapes of flexible molecules. The inner distance is defined as the length of the shortest path between landmark points within the molecular shape, and it reflects well the molecular structure and deformation without explicit decomposition. Our IDSS is stored as a histogram which is a probability distribution of inner distances between all sample point pairs on the molecular surface. We show that IDSS is insensitive to shape deformation of flexible molecules and more effective at capturing molecular structures than traditional shape descriptors. Our approach reduces the 3D shape comparison problem of flexible molecules to the comparison of IDSS histograms.The proposed algorithm is robust and does not require any prior knowledge of the flexible regions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of IDSS within a molecular search engine application for a benchmark containing abundant conformational changes of molecules. Such comparisons in several thousands per second can be carried out. The presented IDSS method can be considered as an alternative and complementary tool for the existing methods for rigid MSC.
