Impatiens wutaishanensis (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Southeast Yunnan, China.

ABSTRACT: Impatiens wutaishanensis R.L. Liao & Lei Cai, a new species from Southeast Yunnan, China, is here described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to Impatiens parvisepala S.X. Yu & Y.T. Hou in its racemose inflorescences, its four lateral sepals, the leaf arrangement, and in having yellow flowers. However, it differs in the height of the plants, the length of the petiole, the size and shape of the leaf blade, the shape of the spur, and the number of flowers in each inflorescence. A detailed description, color photographs, and a provisional IUCN red list assessment are provided, and its geographical distribution, ecology, and morphological relationship with relevant similar species are discussed.

Project description:BackgroundThe species-rich genus Impatiens is mainly distributed throughout much of tropical Africa, India, southwest Asia, southern China and Japan. There are more than 270 species recorded in China, most of which are restricted to the southwest. An unknown species of Impatiens was collected from Yunnan, southwest China.ResultsImpatiens pandurata Y. H. Tan & S. X. Yu, a new species of Balsaminaceae from Jinping County and Malipo County, Yunnan, China is similar to I. apalophylla and I. clavigera in having racemose inflorescences, 4 lateral sepals, hammer-shaped capsules and ellipsoid seeds, but differs in having leaves with oblanceolate blades aggregated at the top of the stem, 3-5-flowered racemes, a yellow lower sepal without reddish patches, yellowish flowers, and a dorsal petal with stalks at the base. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of sequences from both nuclear ribosomal and plastid genes confirm that this new species is distinct from morphologically similar species previously recorded.ConclusionWith the support of careful morphological studies and phylogenetic analysis, I. pandurata is a species new to science.

Yu (Balsaminaceae), a species new to science discovered in Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated here, along with its phylogenetic position among other Impatiens species. Morphological, micro-morphological and molecular evidence is presented as an attestation of its novelty. Impatiensyunlingensis is similar to I.delavayi in having coarsely crenate leave margins, bracts in the upper part, ca. 4/5 length of the pedicels, saccate lower sepal with shallowly bifid spur, linear capsules, and elliptic-oblong, tuberculate seeds, but differs from I.delavayi with lateral sepals 4 (vs. 2), lateral united petal basal lobes subtriangular (vs. dolabriform), and seeds' surface equipped with tubercular ornamentation mostly covered with grain shaped appendages (vs. glabrous and without grain shaped appendages on the top).

Project description:Elatostema pleiophlebium and Elatostema malipoense, two endemic species from southeast Yunnan of China, are described and illustrated. Their diagnostic characters, description and relationship with morphologically similar species are also given. Elatostema pleiophlebium is easily recognised by its glabrous stem and leaf blade, and its longitudinally 1-ribbed outer staminate bracts. Elatostema malipoense is morphologically distinct for its tuberculate achene and pistillate receptacle which is puberulous. Both new species are known only from their type localities, and they are proposed to be classified as critically endangered.

Description of a New Species and Lectotypification of Two Names in Impatiens Sect. Racemosae (Balsaminaceae) from China.

Project description:Impatiens longiaristata (Balsaminaceae), a new species from western Sichuan Province in China, is described and illustrated here based on morphological and molecular data. It is similar to I. longiloba and I. siculifer, but differs in its lower sepal with a long arista at the apex of the mouth, spur curved downward or circinate, and lower petal that is oblong-elliptic and two times longer than the upper petal. Molecular analysis confirmed its placement in sect. Racemosae. Simultaneously, during the inspection of the protologues and type specimens of allied species, it was found that the types of two names from this section were syntypes based on Article 9.6 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Shenzhen Code). According to Articles 8.1, 9.3, and Recommendations 9A.1, 9A.2, and 9A.3, the lectotypes of these two names are here designated.

A new species of Impatiens and updated checklist of Balsaminaceae in Nepal

Project description:Impatiens nimspurjae (Impatiens, Balsaminaceae), a new species from Nepal is described based on molecular data and morphological characters. Notes on the diagnostic characters used to distinguish it from allied taxa are provided. I. nimspurjae is closely related with taxon belonging to sect. Racemosae (I. harae, I. radiata, I. wallichii, I. urticifolia) in having many-flowered racemose inflorescences, lateral sepals 2 (very rarely 4 with inner 2 reduced), capsule linear, seed ovoid, but differs by its sessile leaves, upper lobe of lower united petal not truncated, spur flattened at base. With the discovery of this new species and five species new records to Nepal, a checklist of Balsaminaceae having 57 species (8 endemic) in Nepal is updated. An identification key to the species of Imaptiens in Nepal is also provided.

Carpinus gigabracteatus, a new species from southeast Yunnan, China.

Project description:Carpinus gigabracteatus Z. Qiang Lu, a new hornbeam species from southeast Yunnan of China, is described and illustrated in this study. It possesses extremely large bracts and is closely related to C. tsaiana Hu and C. tschonoskii Maxim., based on the characters of large bract size and bracts without lobes at the base of inner margins. Furthermore, morphological comparison suggested it was distinctly different from C. tschonoskii by a series of characters from leaf, infructescence, bract and nutlet and from C. tsaiana by its leaf length to width ratio (1.4-2.0 vs. 2.0-2.4), lateral veins significantly impressed adaxially, number of lateral veins on each side of midvein (9-14 vs. 14-17), bract length (3.9-4.8 vs. 2.5-3.2 cm) and bract length to width ratio (2.3-3.1 vs. 1.5-2.1). Therefore, this hornbeam, based on only one population from southeast Yunnan, is here erected as a new species, named as C. gigabracteatus.

Three new species of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) from southern Western Ghats, Kerala.

Project description:Three new species of Impatiens, Impatiensachudanandanii, I.danii, and I.shailajae, are described from Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts of Kerala state (SW-India). Impatiensachudanandanii is similar to I.courtallensis and I.herbicola; I.danii to I.goughii and I.shailajae is to I.minae and I.scapiflora. The newly described taxa are readily distinguished from their allied species by unique character combinations, viz. shape of lateral sepal, lower sepal, dorsal petal, seed and pollen morphology.
