A new species of Impatiens and updated checklist of Balsaminaceae in Nepal.

ABSTRACT: Impatiens nimspurjae (Impatiens, Balsaminaceae), a new species from Nepal is described based on molecular data and morphological characters. Notes on the diagnostic characters used to distinguish it from allied taxa are provided. I. nimspurjae is closely related with taxon belonging to sect. Racemosae (I. harae, I. radiata, I. wallichii, I. urticifolia) in having many-flowered racemose inflorescences, lateral sepals 2 (very rarely 4 with inner 2 reduced), capsule linear, seed ovoid, but differs by its sessile leaves, upper lobe of lower united petal not truncated, spur flattened at base. With the discovery of this new species and five species new records to Nepal, a checklist of Balsaminaceae having 57 species (8 endemic) in Nepal is updated. An identification key to the species of Imaptiens in Nepal is also provided.

Project description:BackgroundThe species-rich genus Impatiens is mainly distributed throughout much of tropical Africa, India, southwest Asia, southern China and Japan. There are more than 270 species recorded in China, most of which are restricted to the southwest. An unknown species of Impatiens was collected from Yunnan, southwest China.ResultsImpatiens pandurata Y. H. Tan & S. X. Yu, a new species of Balsaminaceae from Jinping County and Malipo County, Yunnan, China is similar to I. apalophylla and I. clavigera in having racemose inflorescences, 4 lateral sepals, hammer-shaped capsules and ellipsoid seeds, but differs in having leaves with oblanceolate blades aggregated at the top of the stem, 3-5-flowered racemes, a yellow lower sepal without reddish patches, yellowish flowers, and a dorsal petal with stalks at the base. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of sequences from both nuclear ribosomal and plastid genes confirm that this new species is distinct from morphologically similar species previously recorded.ConclusionWith the support of careful morphological studies and phylogenetic analysis, I. pandurata is a species new to science.

Project description:Impatiens bokorensis, a new species of family Balsaminaceae from Phnum Bokor National Park in southwestern Cambodia, is described and illustrated. The species is similar to Impatiens patula, but is readily distinguished by the orbicular-obovate dorsal petal, shorter pedicels and larger seeds.

Impatiens wutaishanensis (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Southeast Yunnan, China.

Project description:Impatiens wutaishanensis R.L. Liao & Lei Cai, a new species from Southeast Yunnan, China, is here described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to Impatiens parvisepala S.X. Yu & Y.T. Hou in its racemose inflorescences, its four lateral sepals, the leaf arrangement, and in having yellow flowers. However, it differs in the height of the plants, the length of the petiole, the size and shape of the leaf blade, the shape of the spur, and the number of flowers in each inflorescence. A detailed description, color photographs, and a provisional IUCN red list assessment are provided, and its geographical distribution, ecology, and morphological relationship with relevant similar species are discussed.

Three new species of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) from southern Western Ghats, Kerala.

Project description:Three new species of Impatiens, Impatiensachudanandanii, I.danii, and I.shailajae, are described from Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts of Kerala state (SW-India). Impatiensachudanandanii is similar to I.courtallensis and I.herbicola; I.danii to I.goughii and I.shailajae is to I.minae and I.scapiflora. The newly described taxa are readily distinguished from their allied species by unique character combinations, viz. shape of lateral sepal, lower sepal, dorsal petal, seed and pollen morphology. Detailed descriptions along with illustrations and photographs are provided.

Description of a New Species and Lectotypification of Two Names in Impatiens Sect. Racemosae (Balsaminaceae) from China.

Project description:Impatiens longiaristata (Balsaminaceae), a new species from western Sichuan Province in China, is described and illustrated here based on morphological and molecular data. It is similar to I. longiloba and I. siculifer, but differs in its lower sepal with a long arista at the apex of the mouth, spur curved downward or circinate, and lower petal that is oblong-elliptic and two times longer than the upper petal. Molecular analysis confirmed its placement in sect. Racemosae. Simultaneously, during the inspection of the protologues and type specimens of allied species, it was found that the types of two names from this section were syntypes based on Article 9.6 of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Shenzhen Code). According to Articles 8.1, 9.3, and Recommendations 9A.1, 9A.2, and 9A.3, the lectotypes of these two names are here designated.

Phylogeny, infrageneric classification and species delimitation in the Malagasy Impatiens (Balsaminaceae).

Project description:The species-rich genus Impatiens (Balsaminaceae) is represented in Madagascar by no less than 260 species. We conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of the Malagasy Impatiens based on nuclear and plastid data and 52 accessions (representing 33 species) to: 1) reassess the monophyly of the Malagasy Impatiens; 2) assess the monophyly of the sections Preimpatiens (Humblotianae and Vulgare groups) with spurs and Trimorphopetalum without spurs as delimited by Perrier de la Bâthie, as well as that of the subgenera Impatiens and Trimorphopetalum as defined by Fischer and Rahelivololona; 3) infer the current status of some morphologically variable species; and 4) test whether the species of Impatiens from the Marojejy National Park form a monophyletic group. The Malagasy Impatiens are further confirmed to be paraphyletic with respect of the Comorian I.auricoma. The present sectional and subgeneric classifications of the Malagasy Impatiens are partly supported, with strong support for the monophyly of the sect. or subgen. Trimorphopetalum. Section Preimpatiens was not supported as monophyletic and neither the Humblotianae group nor the Vulgare group is monophyletic. Impatienselatostemmoides, I. "hammarbyoides", I.inaperta, I.lyallii and I.manaharensis are either para- or polyphyletic and may represent morpho-species. The Impatiens species from the Marojejy National Park do not form a monophyletic group and therefore are suggested to be derived from numerous independent colonisation events from all over Madagascar followed by subsequent diversifications.

The complete chloroplast genome of Impatiens mengtszeana (Balsaminaceae), an endemic species in China.

Project description:Impatiens mengtszeana is an endemic species in China. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of I. mengtszeana was sequenced and analyzed. The total chloroplast genome size of I. mengtszeana is 152,928 bp, including a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs, 26,007 bp) separated by a large single copy (LSC, 83,722 bp) region and a small single copy region (SSC, 17,192 bp). The whole chloroplast genome contains 89 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 37 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), and eight ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). According to the phylogenetic topologies, I. mengtszeana was closely related to I. hawkeri.

Impatiensjenjittikuliae (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Thailand.

Project description:Impatiensjenjittikuliae Ruchis. & Suksathan, a new species from a limestone area in Thasongyang District, Tak Province, Northern Thailand, is described and illustrated. This endemic new species is distinguished from the most similar, I.lacei Hook.f. through having pilose lateral sepals vs glabrous, and by the absence of long hairs along the lamina margin. Its pollen and seed morphology, stem anatomy, and pollination ecology are also observed. Furthermore, its conservation status as Critically Endangered is also assessed.

Characterizing the complete chloroplast genome of the Impatiens davidii (Balsaminaceae).

Project description:Impatiens davidii Franch, 1886 is a rare ornamental flower used in gardens and has high economic value. In this study, we characterized the chloroplast genome of I. davidii and analyzed its phylogenetic relationship with other Impatiens species. The length of the complete chloroplast genome sequence of I. davidii is 152,214 bp, with a GC content of 36.9%. The chloroplast genome shows a typical quadripartite structure with a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,634 bp, separated by one large single copy (LSC) region of 83,128 bp and one small single copy (SSC) region of 17,818 bp. We annotated 125 genes, of which there were 85 protein-coding genes, 32 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The Bayesian phylogenetic tree strongly supports that I. davidii has a close phylogenetic relationship with a group including I. piufanensis and I. alpicola.
