Absorption modes of Mobius strip resonators.

ABSTRACT: In this work, the electromagnetic response of a mathematically interesting shape-a Möbius strip-is presented, along with a ring resonator for comparison. Both resonators consist of a central lossy dielectric layer bounded by perfectly conducting layers. For the case of the Möbius strips, the computational results show that there are a family of half-integer wavelength modes within the dielectric layer. These additional modes result in increased absorption, and a corresponding reduction in the radar cross section. Interestingly, rotational scans show that these modes can be excited over a large angular range. This investigation gives an understanding of the electromagnetic response of these structures, paving the way for future experiments on Möbius strip resonators.

Light-driven continuous rotating Mobius strip actuators.

Project description:Twisted toroidal ribbons such as the one-sided Möbius strip have inspired scientists, engineers and artists for many centuries. A physical Möbius strip exhibits interesting mechanical properties deriving from a tendency to redistribute the torsional strain away from the twist region. This leads to the interesting possibility of building topological actuators with continuous deformations. Here we report on a series of corresponding bi-layered stripe actuators using a photothermally responsive liquid crystal elastomer as the fundamental polymeric material. Employing a special procedure, even Möbius strips with an odd number of twists can be fabricated exhibiting a seamless homeotropic and homogeneous morphology. Imposing a suitable contraction gradient under near-infrared light irradiation, these ribbons can realize continuous anticlockwise/clockwise in-situ rotation. Our work could pave the way for developing actuators and shape morphing materials that need not rely on switching between distinct states.

Soap-film Mobius strip changes topology with a twist singularity

Project description:It is well-known that a soap film spanning a looped wire can have the topology of a Möbius strip and that deformations of the wire can induce a transformation to a two-sided film, but the process by which this transformation is achieved has remained unknown. Experimental studies presented here show that this process consists of a collapse of the film toward the boundary that produces a previously unrecognized finite-time twist singularity that changes the linking number of the film’s Plateau border and the centerline of the wire. We conjecture that it is a general feature of this type of transition that the singularity always occurs at the surface boundary. The change in linking number is shown to be a consequence of a viscous reconnection of the Plateau border at the moment of the singularity. High-speed imaging of the collapse dynamics of the film’s throat, similar to that of the central opening of a catenoid, reveals a crossover between two power laws. Far from the singularity, it is suggested that the collapse is controlled by dissipation within the fluid film surrounding the wire, whereas closer to the transition the power law has the classical form arising from a balance between air inertia and surface tension. Analytical and numerical studies of minimal surfaces and ruled surfaces are used to gain insight into the energetics underlying the transition and the twisted geometry in the neighborhood of the singularity. A number of challenging mathematical questions arising from these observations are posed.

Mobius-strip-like columnar functional connections are revealed in somato-sensory receptive field centroids.

Project description:Receptive fields of neurons in the forelimb region of areas 3b and 1 of primary somatosensory cortex, in cats and monkeys, were mapped using extracellular recordings obtained sequentially from nearly radial penetrations. Locations of the field centroids indicated the presence of a functional system in which cortical homotypic representations of the limb surfaces are entwined in three-dimensional Möbius-strip-like patterns of synaptic connections. Boundaries of somatosensory receptive field in nested groups irregularly overlie the centroid order, and are interpreted as arising from the superposition of learned connections upon the embryonic order. Since the theory of embryonic synaptic self-organization used to model these results was devised and earlier used to explain findings in primary visual cortex, the present findings suggest the theory may be of general application throughout cortex and may reveal a modular functional synaptic system, which, only in some parts of the cortex, and in some species, is manifest as anatomical ordering into columns.

Luminescent Mobius Strip of a Flexible Halogen-Bonded Cocrystal Evolved from Ring and Helix.

Project description:Luminescent Möbius strip microstructures have been created for the first time based on flexible organic single crystals via a template-free solution self-assembly. We herein demonstrated a rationally designed morphological evolution toward Möbius strips from rings and helixes. Our findings lay the foundation for the future construction of complex matters with predetermined morphologies and functions from crystal systems.

Nonlinear up-conversion of a polarization Mobius strip with half-integer optical angular momentum.

Project description:Symmetries and conservation laws of energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum play a central role in nonlinear optics. Recently, paraxial light fields with nontrivial topology have been attracting a keen interest. Despite not being eigenstates of the orbital and spin angular momenta (OAM and SAM), they are eigenstates of the generalized angular momentum (GAM) operator-a mixture of the OAM and SAM operators with fractional eigenvalues. By driving high harmonic generation with a polarization Möbius strip carrying a half-integer GAM charge and implementing angular momentum characterization methods in the extreme ultraviolet range, we demonstrate the linear scaling of the GAM with the harmonic order, each harmonic carrying a precise half-integer GAM charge. Our work shows that beyond SAM and OAM, the GAM is, in some situations, an appropriate quantum number. It paves the way for finer manipulations and applications of light beams containing fractional-order polarization singularities.

Fractal modes and multi-beam generation from hybrid microlaser resonators.

Project description:Fractals are ubiquitous in nature, and prominent examples include snowflakes and neurons. Although it has long been known that intricate optical fractal patterns can be realized with components such as gratings and reflecting spheres, generating fractal transverse modes from a laser has proven to be elusive. By introducing a 2D network of microspheres into a Fabry-Pérot cavity bounding a gain medium, we demonstrate a hybrid optical resonator in which the spheres enable the simultaneous generation of arrays of conventional (Gaussian) and fractal laser modes. Within the interstices of the microsphere crystal, several distinct fractal modes are observed, two of which resemble the Sierpinski Triangle. Coupling between adjacent fractal modes is evident, and fractal modes may be synthesized through design of the microsphere network. Owing to a unique synergy between the gain medium and the resonator, this optical platform is able to emit hundreds of microlaser beams and probe live motile cells.

Disclosure of Ground-State Zimmerman-Mobius Aromaticity in the Radical Anion of [6]Helicene and Evidence for 4π Periodic Aromatic Ring Currents in a Molecular "Metallic" Mobius Strip.

Project description:In 1966, Zimmerman proposed a type of Möbius aromaticity that involves through-space electron delocalization; it has since been widely applied to explain reactivity in pericyclic reactions, but is considered to be limited to transition-state structures. Although the easily accessible hexahelicene radical anion has been known for more than half a century, it was overlooked that it exhibits a ground-state minimum and robust Zimmerman-Möbius aromaticity in its central noose-like opening, becoming, hence, the oldest existing Möbius aromatic system and with smallest Möbius cycle known. Despite its overall aromatic stabilization energy of 13.6 kcal mol-1 (at B3LYP/6-311+G**), the radical also features a strong, globally induced paramagnetic ring current along its outer edge. Exclusive global paramagnetic currents can also be found in other fully delocalized radical anions of 4N+2 π-electron aromatic polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons (PAH), thus questioning the established magnetic criterion of antiaromaticity. As an example of a PAH with nontrivial topology, we studied a novel Möbius[16]cyclacene that has a non-orientable surface manifold and a stable closed-shell singlet ground state at several density functional theory levels. Its metallic monoanion radical (0.0095 eV band gap at HSE06/6-31G* level) is also wave-function stable and displays an unusual 4π-periodic, magnetically induced ring current (reminiscent of the transformation behaviour of spinors under spatial rotation), thus indicating the existence of a new, Hückel-rule-evading type of aromaticity.

Perfect and broadband acoustic absorption by critically coupled sub-wavelength resonators.

Project description:Perfect absorption is an interdisciplinary topic with a large number of applications, the challenge of which consists of broadening its inherently narrow frequency-band performance. We experimentally and analytically report perfect and broadband absorption for audible sound, by the mechanism of critical coupling, with a sub-wavelength multi-resonant scatterer (SMRS) made of a plate-resonator/closed waveguide structure. In order to introduce the role of the key parameters, we first present the case of a single resonant scatterer (SRS) made of a Helmholtz resonator/closed waveguide structure. In both cases the controlled balance between the energy leakage of the several resonances and the inherent losses of the system leads to perfect absorption peaks. In the case of the SMRS we show that systems with large inherent losses can be critically coupled using resonances with large leakage. In particular, we show that in the SMRS system, with a thickness of λ/12 and diameter of λ/7, several perfect absorption peaks overlap to produce absorption bigger than 93% for frequencies that extend over a factor of 2 in audible frequencies. The reported concepts and methodology provide guidelines for the design of broadband perfect absorbers which could contribute to solve the major issue of noise reduction.

Monocrystalline Silicon Carbide Disk Resonators on Phononic Crystals with Ultra-Low Dissipation Bulk Acoustic Wave Modes.

Project description:Micromechanical resonators with ultra-low energy dissipation are essential for a wide range of applications, such as navigation in GPS-denied environments. Routinely implemented in silicon (Si), their energy dissipation often reaches the quantum limits of Si, which can be surpassed by using materials with lower intrinsic loss. This paper explores dissipation limits in 4H monocrystalline silicon carbide-on-insulator (4H-SiCOI) mechanical resonators fabricated at wafer-level, and reports on ultra-high quality-factors (Q) in gyroscopic-mode disk resonators. The SiC disk resonators are anchored upon an acoustically-engineered Si substrate containing a phononic crystal which suppresses anchor loss and promises QANCHOR near 1 Billion by design. Operating deep in the adiabatic regime, the bulk acoustic wave (BAW) modes of solid SiC disks are mostly free of bulk thermoelastic damping. Capacitively-transduced SiC BAW disk resonators consistently display gyroscopic m = 3 modes with Q-factors above 2 Million (M) at 6.29 MHz, limited by surface TED due to microscale roughness along the disk sidewalls. The surface TED limit is revealed by optical measurements on a SiC disk, with nanoscale smooth sidewalls, exhibiting Q = 18 M at 5.3 MHz, corresponding to f · Q = 9 · 1013 Hz, a 5-fold improvement over the Akhiezer limit of Si. Our results pave the path for integrated SiC resonators and resonant gyroscopes with Q-factors beyond the reach of Si.

Square Membrane Resonators Supporting Degenerate Modes of Vibration for High-Throughput Mass Spectrometry of Single Bacterial Cells.

Project description:In nanomechanical mass spectrometry, sensing devices are commonly placed in the vacuum environment and a stream of analytes is directed toward the sensor surface for measurement. Beam structures, such as double-clamped nanobeams and nanocantilevers, are commonly used due to their low inertial mass and the simplicity of the analytical models for mass extraction. The drawback of such structures is their low capture areas, compromising the capture efficiency and throughput of this technique. Bi-axisymmetric resonators, such as ultrathin square or circular membranes, arise as an optimal geometry to maximize capture efficiency while minimizing the device inertial mass. However, these structures present degenerate mechanical modes, whose frequency perturbations upon analyte adsorption are not well described by commonly used models. Furthermore, prior knowledge of the vibration mode shapes of the sensor is crucial for the correct calculation of the analyte's mass, and the mode shape of degenerate modes may change significantly after every adsorption event. In this work, we present an accurate analytical theory to describe the effect of mass adsorption on the degenerate modes of square membrane resonators and propose two different methods based on the new theory to update the vibration mode shapes after every adsorption event. Finally, we illustrate the problem experimentally obtaining the mass and adsorption position of individual Escherichia coli K-12 bacterial cells on commercial square silicon nitride membranes fabricated with very small tolerances.
