ABSTRACT: Luminescent Möbius strip microstructures have been created for the first time based on flexible organic single crystals via a template-free solution self-assembly. We herein demonstrated a rationally designed morphological evolution toward Möbius strips from rings and helixes. Our findings lay the foundation for the future construction of complex matters with predetermined morphologies and functions from crystal systems.

Combined diffraction and density functional theory calculations of halogen-bonded cocrystal monolayers.

Project description:This work describes the combined use of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the cocrystal formation or phase separation in 2D monolayers capable of halogen bonding. The solid monolayer structure of 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB) has been determined by X-ray synchrotron diffraction. The mixing behavior of DIB with 4,4'-bipyridyl (BPY) has also been studied and interestingly is found to phase-separate rather than form a cocrystal, as observed in the bulk. DFT calculations are used to establish the underlying origin of this interesting behavior. The DFT calculations are demonstrated to agree well with the recently proposed monolayer structure for the cocrystal of BPY and 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB) (the perfluorinated analogue of DIB), where halogen bonding has also been identified by diffraction. Here we have calculated an estimate of the halogen bond strength by DFT calculations for the DITFB/BPY cocrystal monolayer, which is found to be ∼20 kJ/mol. Computationally, we find that the nonfluorinated DIB and BPY are not expected to form a halogen-bonded cocrystal in a 2D layer; for this pair of species, phase separation of the components is calculated to be lower energy, in good agreement with the diffraction results.

Absorption modes of Mobius strip resonators.

Project description:In this work, the electromagnetic response of a mathematically interesting shape-a Möbius strip-is presented, along with a ring resonator for comparison. Both resonators consist of a central lossy dielectric layer bounded by perfectly conducting layers. For the case of the Möbius strips, the computational results show that there are a family of half-integer wavelength modes within the dielectric layer. These additional modes result in increased absorption, and a corresponding reduction in the radar cross section. Interestingly, rotational scans show that these modes can be excited over a large angular range. This investigation gives an understanding of the electromagnetic response of these structures, paving the way for future experiments on Möbius strip resonators.

Light-driven continuous rotating Mobius strip actuators.

Project description:Twisted toroidal ribbons such as the one-sided Möbius strip have inspired scientists, engineers and artists for many centuries. A physical Möbius strip exhibits interesting mechanical properties deriving from a tendency to redistribute the torsional strain away from the twist region. This leads to the interesting possibility of building topological actuators with continuous deformations. Here we report on a series of corresponding bi-layered stripe actuators using a photothermally responsive liquid crystal elastomer as the fundamental polymeric material. Employing a special procedure, even Möbius strips with an odd number of twists can be fabricated exhibiting a seamless homeotropic and homogeneous morphology. Imposing a suitable contraction gradient under near-infrared light irradiation, these ribbons can realize continuous anticlockwise/clockwise in-situ rotation. Our work could pave the way for developing actuators and shape morphing materials that need not rely on switching between distinct states.

Halogen-Bonded Supramolecular Parallelograms: From Self-Complementary Iodoalkyne Halogen-Bonded Dimers to 1:1 and 2:2 Iodoalkyne Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals.

Project description:The formation of supramolecular parallelograms utilizing iodoalkyne-pyridine halogen bonding is described. The crystal structures of four iodoalkynyl-substituted (phenylethynyl)pyridines demonstrate the feasibility of discrete self-complementary dimer formation. These compounds 3-(2-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (1), 2-(3-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (2), 3-(4,5-difluoro-2-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl) pyridine (3), and 2-(5-iodoethynyl-2,4-dimethylphenylethynyl) pyridine (4) all form parallelogram-shaped dimers with two self-complementary short N-I halogen bonds. The potential formation of iodoalkynyl halogen-bonded supramolecular macrocycles is demonstrated by the formation of a discrete halogen-bonded parallelogram-shaped complex in the 1:1 cocrystal formed from the bis iodoalkyne, 1-iodoethynyl-2-(3-iodoethynyl-phenylethynyl)-4,5-dimethoxybenzene (6), and the dipyridyl, 5-phenyl-2-(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine (7). Furthermore, discrete supramolecular parallelograms form within the 2:2 cocrystal formed between 1,2-bis(iodoethynyl)-4,5-difluorobenzene and the dipyridyl 4-(3-pyridylethynyl) pyridine (8).

Disclosure of Ground-State Zimmerman-Mobius Aromaticity in the Radical Anion of [6]Helicene and Evidence for 4π Periodic Aromatic Ring Currents in a Molecular "Metallic" Mobius Strip.

Project description:In 1966, Zimmerman proposed a type of Möbius aromaticity that involves through-space electron delocalization; it has since been widely applied to explain reactivity in pericyclic reactions, but is considered to be limited to transition-state structures. Although the easily accessible hexahelicene radical anion has been known for more than half a century, it was overlooked that it exhibits a ground-state minimum and robust Zimmerman-Möbius aromaticity in its central noose-like opening, becoming, hence, the oldest existing Möbius aromatic system and with smallest Möbius cycle known. Despite its overall aromatic stabilization energy of 13.6 kcal mol-1 (at B3LYP/6-311+G**), the radical also features a strong, globally induced paramagnetic ring current along its outer edge. Exclusive global paramagnetic currents can also be found in other fully delocalized radical anions of 4N+2 π-electron aromatic polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons (PAH), thus questioning the established magnetic criterion of antiaromaticity. As an example of a PAH with nontrivial topology, we studied a novel Möbius[16]cyclacene that has a non-orientable surface manifold and a stable closed-shell singlet ground state at several density functional theory levels. Its metallic monoanion radical (0.0095 eV band gap at HSE06/6-31G* level) is also wave-function stable and displays an unusual 4π-periodic, magnetically induced ring current (reminiscent of the transformation behaviour of spinors under spatial rotation), thus indicating the existence of a new, Hückel-rule-evading type of aromaticity.

Soap-film Mobius strip changes topology with a twist singularity

Project description:It is well-known that a soap film spanning a looped wire can have the topology of a Möbius strip and that deformations of the wire can induce a transformation to a two-sided film, but the process by which this transformation is achieved has remained unknown. Experimental studies presented here show that this process consists of a collapse of the film toward the boundary that produces a previously unrecognized finite-time twist singularity that changes the linking number of the film’s Plateau border and the centerline of the wire. We conjecture that it is a general feature of this type of transition that the singularity always occurs at the surface boundary. The change in linking number is shown to be a consequence of a viscous reconnection of the Plateau border at the moment of the singularity. High-speed imaging of the collapse dynamics of the film’s throat, similar to that of the central opening of a catenoid, reveals a crossover between two power laws. Far from the singularity, it is suggested that the collapse is controlled by dissipation within the fluid film surrounding the wire, whereas closer to the transition the power law has the classical form arising from a balance between air inertia and surface tension. Analytical and numerical studies of minimal surfaces and ruled surfaces are used to gain insight into the energetics underlying the transition and the twisted geometry in the neighborhood of the singularity. A number of challenging mathematical questions arising from these observations are posed.

Halogen-bonded shape memory polymers.

Project description:Halogen bonding (XB), a non-covalent interaction between an electron-deficient halogen atom and a Lewis base, is widely adopted in organic synthesis and supramolecular crystal engineering. However, the roadmap towards materials applications is hindered by the challenges in harnessing this relatively weak intermolecular interaction to devise human-commanded stimuli-responsive soft materials. Here, we report a liquid crystalline network comprising permanent covalent crosslinks and dynamic halogen bond crosslinks, which possess reversible thermo-responsive shape memory behaviour. Our findings suggest that I···N halogen bond, a paradigmatic motif in crystal engineering studies, enables temporary shape fixation at room temperature and subsequent shape recovery in response to human body temperature. We demonstrate versatile shape programming of the halogen-bonded polymer networks through human-hand operation and propose a micro-robotic injection model for complex 1D to 3D shape morphing in aqueous media at 37 °C. Through systematic structure-property-performance studies, we show the necessity of the I···N crosslinks in driving the shape memory effect. The halogen-bonded shape memory polymers expand the toolbox for the preparation of smart supramolecular constructs with tailored mechanical properties and thermoresponsive behaviour, for the needs of, e.g., future medical devices.

Uracil Derivatives for Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals.

Project description:Among non-covalent interactions, halogen bonding is emerging as a new powerful tool for supramolecular self-assembly. Here, along with a green and effective method, we report three new halogen-bonded cocrystals containing uracil derivatives and 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene as X-bond donor coformer. These multicomponent solids were prepared both by solvent-drop grinding and solution methods and further characterized by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, and thermal methods (TGA-DSC). In order to study the relative importance of hydrogen versus halogen bonds in the crystal packing, computational methods were applied.

Conservation of the Hydrogen-Bonded Pyridone Homosynthon in Halogen-Bonded Cocrystals.

Project description:Seven cocrystals of pyridone and perfluorinated halocarbons have been prepared. In all cases pairs of pyridone molecules are connected into dimers by two N-H···O hydrogen bonds, forming the characteristic pyridone homosynthon of R2 2(8) topology. These dimers further act as acceptors of halogen bonds through the two pyridone oxygen atoms, forming two (in six cases) or three (in one case) halogen bonds with the donor molecules. The stoichiometry of the cocrystals obtained and the overall topology of the supramolecular architecture depend primarily on the topicity of the halogen bond donor, with the monotopic donor yielding a cocrystal of 1:1 stoichiometry comprising discrete supramolecular complexes, the ditopic donors cocrystals of 1:2 stoichiometry comprising chains, and the tritopic donor a cocrystal of 1:2 stoichiometry comprising hydrogen- and halogen-bonded layers. The results indicate that the pyridone homosynthon is a robust and reliable supramolecular synthon that is conserved in halogen-bonded cocrystals of pyridone.

Magnetically Induced Ring-Current Strengths in Mobius Twisted Annulenes.

Project description:The topology of twisted molecular rings is characterized by the linking number, which is equal to the sum of the twist-a local property of the molecular frame-and the writhe-a global parameter, which represents the bending of the molecular ring. In this work, we investigate a number of cyclic all- trans C40H40 annulenes with varying twisting numbers for a given linking number and their dications. The aromatic character is assessed by calculating ring-current strength susceptibilities using the gauge-including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC) method, which makes it possible to conduct a systematic study of the relation between the topology and aromaticity of twisted molecules. We found that the aromatic properties of the investigated Möbius twisted molecules are not only dependent on the linking number as previously suggested but also depend strongly on the partitioning of the linking number into the twist and writhe contributions.
