Project description:The aim of this paper is to generalize and study a new family of lifetime distributions in order to gain flexibility. The new generalized distribution is named as type II exponentiated half-logistic Topp-Leone-Marshall-Olkin-G (TIIEHL-TL-MO-G) family of distributions. Several mathematical properties of the new model have been derived including, moments and generating function, distribution of the order statistics and Rényi entropy. The performance of the maximum likelihood estimates is evaluated via a simulation study. Lastly, we apply the generated family to three real data to illustrate the potentiality of this new generalized family of distributions.

Project description:During the past couple of years, statistical distributions have been widely used in applied areas such as reliability engineering, medical, and financial sciences. In this context, we come across a diverse range of statistical distributions for modeling heavy tailed data sets. Well-known distributions are log-normal, log-t, various versions of Pareto, log-logistic, Weibull, gamma, exponential, Rayleigh and its variants, and generalized beta of the second kind distributions, among others. In this paper, we try to supplement the distribution theory literature by incorporating a new model, called a new extended Weibull distribution. The proposed distribution is very flexible and exhibits desirable properties. Maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters are obtained, and a Monte Carlo simulation study is conducted to assess the behavior of these estimators. Finally, we provide a comparative study of the newly proposed and some other existing methods via analyzing three real data sets from different disciplines such as reliability engineering, medical, and financial sciences. It has been observed that the proposed method outclasses well-known distributions on the basis of model selection criteria.

Project description:In this work, a new family of distributions, which extends the Beta transmuted family, was obtained, called the Modified Beta Transmuted Family of distribution. This derived family has the Beta Family of Distribution and the Transmuted family of distribution as subfamilies. The Modified beta transmuted frechet, modified beta transmuted exponential, modified beta transmuted gompertz and modified beta transmuted lindley were obtained as special cases. The analytical expressions were studied for some statistical properties of the derived family of distribution which includes the moments, moments generating function and order statistics. The estimates of the parameters of the family were obtained using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Using the exponential distribution as a baseline for the family distribution, the resulting distribution (modified beta transmuted exponential distribution) was studied and its properties. The modified beta transmuted exponential distribution was applied to a real life time data to assess its flexibility in which the results shows a better fit when compared to some competitive models.

Project description:In this paper, we introduce the exponentiated power generalized Weibull power series (EPGWPS) family of distributions, obtained by compounding the exponentiated power generalized Weibull and power series distributions. By construction, the new family contains a myriad of new flexible lifetime distributions having strong physical interpretations (lifetime system, biological studies…). We discuss the characteristics and properties of the EPGWPS family, including its probability density and hazard rate functions, quantiles, moments, incomplete moments, skewness and kurtosis. The main vocation of the EPGWPS family remains to be applied in a statistical setting, and data analysis in particular. In this regard, we explore the estimation of the model parameters by the maximum likelihood method, with accuracy supported by a detailed simulation study. Then, we apply it to two practical data sets, showing the applicability and competitiveness of the EPGWPS models in comparison to some other well-reputed models.

Project description:Amphipod crustaceans were collected at all 55 stations sampled with an epibenthic sledge during two IceAGE expeditions (Icelandic marine Animals: Genetics and Ecology) in 2011 and 2013. In total, 34 amphipod families and three superfamilies were recorded in the samples. Distribution maps are presented for each taxon along with a summary of the regional taxonomy for the group. Statistical analyses based on presence/absence data revealed a pattern of family distributions that correlated with sampling depth. Clustering according to the geographic location of the stations (northernmost North Atlantic Sea and Arctic Ocean) can also be observed. IceAGE data for the Amphilochidae and Oedicerotidae were analysed on species level; in case of the Amphilochidae they were compared to the findings from a previous Icelandic benthic survey, BIOICE (Benthic Invertebrates of Icelandic waters), which also identified a high abundance of amphipod fauna.

Project description:Histone lysine methylations are essential components of the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms. Although major histone lysine methylations have been extensively investigated, low-abundance methylations remain largely under-studied. Among the low-abundance methylations, H3K14me3 has been identified in mammalian cells upon pathological infection by Legionella pneumophila, a gram-negative bacterium and causative agent of a severe form of pneumonia. Global host chromatin H3K14 trimethylation and transcription repression are mediated by an H3K14 methyltransferase, regulator of methylation A (RomA) encoded by the bacterial genome 1. Importantly, previous mass spectrometry studies also suggested the presence of endogenous H3K14 methylations among eukaryotes 2-7, although these findings have not been confirmed by independent means. In addition, the genomic distribution as well as the H3K14me3 regulatory enzymes have not been identified. Here, using an H3K14me3-specific antiserum we report the identification of distinct and shared H3K14me3 distribution patterns in HEK293T and human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), two cell lines with extensive epigenome profiles allowing cross comparisons with other known histone marks. H3K14me3 heavily decorates the KRAB-ZNF (Krupple-associated box containing zinc finger gene) clusters in both the HEK293T and hESC cells but is only strongly associated with active transcription in HEK293T cells, where it binds thousands of active promoters. We further profiled H3K14me3 in a mouse melanoma cell line, B16, and discovered similar distribution features as those in HEK293T cells. Importantly, we identified members of the KDM4 family of histone demethylases (KDM4A, KDM4B and KDM4C) as H3K14me3 demethylases. As the KDM4 family members have been shown to mediate H3K9me3 and H3K36me3 demethylation 8, our findings also revealed crosstalks among these modifications.

Project description:Over the last two decades, many exciting variable selection methods have been developed for finding a small group of covariates that are associated with the response from a large pool. Can the discoveries by such data mining approaches be spurious due to high dimensionality and limited sample size? Can our fundamental assumptions on exogeneity of covariates needed for such variable selection be validated with the data? To answer these questions, we need to derive the distributions of the maximum spurious correlations given certain number of predictors, namely, the distribution of the correlation of a response variable Y with the best s linear combinations of p covariates X, even when X and Y are independent. When the covariance matrix of X possesses the restricted eigenvalue property, we derive such distributions for both finite s and diverging s, using Gaussian approximation and empirical process techniques. However, such a distribution depends on the unknown covariance matrix of X. Hence, we use the multiplier bootstrap procedure to approximate the unknown distributions and establish the consistency of such a simple bootstrap approach. The results are further extended to the situation where residuals are from regularized fits. Our approach is then applied to construct the upper confidence limit for the maximum spurious correlation and testing exogeneity of covariates. The former provides a baseline for guarding against false discoveries due to data mining and the latter tests whether our fundamental assumptions for high-dimensional model selection are statistically valid. Our techniques and results are illustrated by both numerical examples and real data analysis.

Project description:In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. We verify the potentiality of the BXII-ME model via monthly actual taxes revenue and fatigue life applications.
