Toughening Mechanism of Unidirectional Stretchable Composite.

ABSTRACT: Composite materials have been long developed to improve the mechanical properties such as strength and toughness. Most composites are non-stretchable which hinders the applications in soft robotics. Recent papers have reported a new design of unidirectional soft composite with superior stretchability and toughness. This paper presents an analytical model to study the toughening mechanism of such composite. We use the Gent model to characterize the large deformation of the hard phase and soft phase of the composite. We analyze how the stress transfer between phases deconcentrates the stress at the crack tip and enhances the toughness. We identify two types of failure modes: rupture of hard phase and interfacial debonding. We calculate the average toughness of the composite with different physical and geometric parameters. The experimental results in literature agree with our theoretical predictions very well.

Toughening stretchable fibers via serial fracturing of a metallic core.

Project description:Tough, biological materials (e.g., collagen or titin) protect tissues from irreversible damage caused by external loads. Mimicking these protective properties is important in packaging and in emerging applications such as durable electronic skins and soft robotics. This paper reports the formation of tough, metamaterial-like core-shell fibers that maintain stress at the fracture strength of a metal throughout the strain of an elastomer. The shell experiences localized strain enhancements that cause the higher modulus core to fracture repeatedly, increasing the energy dissipated during extension. Normally, fractures are catastrophic. However, in this architecture, the fractures are localized to the core. In addition to dissipating energy, the metallic core provides electrical conductivity and enables repair of the fractured core for repeated use. The fibers are 2.5 times tougher than titin and hold more than 15,000 times their own weight for a period 100 times longer than a hollow elastomeric fiber.

Graphene/Silver Nanowires/Graphene Sandwich Composite for Stretchable Transparent Electrodes and Its Fracture Mechanism.

Project description:Polycrystalline graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is characterized by line defects and disruptions at the grain boundaries and nucleation sites. This adversely affects the stretchability and conductivity of graphene, which limits its applications in the field of flexible, stretchable, and transparent electrodes. We demonstrate a composite electrode comprised of a graphene/silver nanowires (AgNWs)/graphene sandwich structure on a polydimethylsiloxane substrate to overcome this limitation. The sandwich structure exhibits high transparency (>90%) and excellent conductivity improvement of the graphene layers. The use of AgNWs significantly suppresses the conductivity loss resulting from stretching. The mechanism of the suppression of the conductivity loss was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and lateral force microscopy. The results suggest that the high surface friction of the sandwich structure causes a sliding effect between the graphene layers would produce low crack or hole formation to maintain the conductivity. In addition to acting as conductive layers, the top and bottom graphene layers can also protect the AgNWs from oxidation, thereby enabling maintenance of the electrical performance of the electrodes over a prolonged period. We also confirmed the applicability of the sandwich structure electrode to the human body, such as on the wrist, finger, and elbow.

A Composite Microfiber for Biodegradable Stretchable Electronics.

Project description:Biodegradable stretchable electronics have demonstrated great potential for future applications in stretchable electronics and can be resorbed, dissolved, and disintegrated in the environment. Most biodegradable electronic devices have used flexible biodegradable materials, which have limited conformality in wearable and implantable devices. Here, we report a biodegradable, biocompatible, and stretchable composite microfiber of poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for transient stretchable device applications. Compositing high-strength PVA with stretchable and biodegradable PGS with poor processability, formability, and mechanical strength overcomes the limits of pure PGS. As an application, the stretchable microfiber-based strain sensor developed by the incorporation of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) into a composite microfiber showed stable current response under cyclic and dynamic stretching at 30% strain. The sensor also showed the ability to monitor the strain produced by tapping, bending, and stretching of the finger, knee, and esophagus. The biodegradable and stretchable composite materials of PGS with additive PVA have great potential for use in transient and environmentally friendly stretchable electronics with reduced environmental footprint.

Nanotwin-governed toughening mechanism in hierarchically structured biological materials.

Project description:As a natural biocomposite, Strombus gigas, commonly known as the giant pink queen conch shell, exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, especially a high fracture toughness. It is known that the basic building block of conch shell contains a high density of growth twins with average thickness of several nanometres, but their effects on the mechanical properties of the shell remain mysterious. Here we reveal a toughening mechanism governed by nanoscale twins in the conch shell. A combination of in situ fracture experiments inside a transmission electron microscope, large-scale atomistic simulations and finite element modelling show that the twin boundaries can effectively block crack propagation by inducing phase transformation and delocalization of deformation around the crack tip. This mechanism leads to an increase in fracture energy of the basic building block by one order of magnitude, and contributes significantly to that of the overall structure via structural hierarchy.

Reconfigurable soft body trajectories using unidirectionally stretchable composite laminae.

Project description:Compliant, continuum structures allow living creatures to perform complex tasks inaccessible to artificial rigid systems. Although advancements in hyper-elastic materials have spurred the development of synthetic soft structures (i.e., artificial muscles), these structures have yet to match the precise control and diversity of motions witnessed in living creatures. Cephalopods tentacles, for example, can undergo multiple trajectories using muscular hydrostat, a structure consisting of aggregated laminae of unidirectional muscle fibers. Here, we present a self-adhesive composite lamina inspired by the structural morphology of the muscular hydrostat, which adheres to any volumetrically expanding soft body to govern its motion trajectory. The composite lamina is stretchable only in one direction due to inextensible continuous fibers unidirectionally embedded within its hyper-elastic matrix. We showcase reconfiguration of inflation trajectories of two- and three-dimensional soft bodies by simply adhering laminae to their surfaces.

Atomic-Scale Mechanism of Unidirectional Oxide Growth

Project description:A fundamental knowledge of the unidirectional growth mechanisms is required for precise control on size, shape, and thereby functionalities of nanostructures. The oxidation of many metals results in oxide nanowire growth with a bicrystal grain boundary along the axial direction. Using transmission electron microscopy that spatially and temporally resolves CuO nanowire growth during the oxidation of copper, here we provide direct evidence of the correlation between unidirectional crystal growth and bicrystal grain boundary diffusion. Based on atomic scale observations of the upward growth at the nanowire tip, oscillatory downward growth of atomic layers on the nanowire sidewall and the parabolic kinetics of lengthening, bicrystal grain boundary diffusion is the mechanism by which Cu ions are delivered from the nanowire root to the tip. Together with density-functional theory calculations, we further show that the asymmetry in the corner-crossing barriers promotes the unidirectional oxide growth by hindering the transport of Cu ions from the nanowire tip to the sidewall facets. We expect the broader applicability of these results in manipulating the growth of nanostructured oxides by controlling the bicrystal grain boundary structure that favors anisotropic diffusion for unidirectional, one-dimensional crystal growth for nanowires or isotropic diffusion for two-dimensional platelet growth. Cutting Procedures, Tensile Testing, and Ageing of Flexible Unidirectional Composite Laminates.

Project description:Many body armor designs incorporate unidirectional (UD) laminates. UD laminates are constructed of thin (<0.05 mm) layers of high-performance yarns, where the yarns in each layer are oriented parallel to each other and held in place using binder resins and thin polymer films. The armor is constructed by stacking the unidirectional layers in different orientations. To date, only very preliminary work has been performed to characterize the ageing of the binder resins used in unidirectional laminates and the effects on their performance. For example, during the development of the conditioning protocol used in the National Institute of Justice Standard-0101.06, UD laminates showed visual signs of delamination and reductions in V50, which is the velocity at which half of the projectiles are expected to perforate the armor, after ageing. A better understanding of the material property changes in UD laminates is necessary to comprehend the long-term performance of armors constructed from these materials. There are no current standards recommended for mechanically interrogating unidirectional (UD) laminate materials. This study explores methods and best practices for accurately testing the mechanical properties of these materials and proposes a new test methodology for these materials. Best practices for ageing these materials are also described.

Tensile Testing of Aged Flexible Unidirectional Composite Laminates for Body Armor.

Project description:Flexible Unidirectional (UD) composite laminates are commonly being used for ballistic-resistant body armor. These laminates comprise UD layers, each constructed by laminating thin layers of high-performance fibers held in place using very low modulus binder resins, with the fibers in each layer oriented parallel to each other. As these materials are used in body armor, it is important to investigate their long-term reliability, particularly with regards to exposure to temperature and humidity as these are known causes of degradation in other commonly used body armor materials. This work investigates the tensile behavior of a poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), or PPTA flexible UD laminate aged for up to 150 d at accelerated conditions of 70 °C and 76 % relative humidity (RH). Tests were performed at three different crosshead displacement rates and three different gauge lengths. The effect of ageing on the mechanical properties of the material resulted in less than 10 % degradation in tensile strength, with a more significant reduction in longer specimens when tested at slower rates.

Effect of Aging on Unidirectional Composite Laminate Polyethylene for Body Armor.

Project description:The construction of ballistic-resistant body armor is experiencing an increasing use of flexible unidirectional (UD) composite laminates that comprise multiple layers. Each UD layer contains hexagonally packed high-performance fibers with a very low modulus matrix (sometimes referred to as binder resins). Laminates are then made from orthogonal stacks of these layers, and these laminate-based armor packages offer significant performance advantages over standard woven materials. When designing any armor system, the long-term reliability of the armor materials is critical, particularly with regard to stability with exposure to temperature and humidity, as these are known causes of degradation in commonly used body armor materials. To better inform future armor designers, this work investigates the tensile behavior of an ultra-high molar mass polyethylene (UHMMPE) flexible UD laminate that was aged for at least 350 d at two accelerated conditions: 70 °C at 76% relative humidity (RH) and 70 °C in a desiccator. Tensile tests were performed at two different loading rates. The mechanical properties of the material after ageing demonstrated less than 10% degradation in tensile strength, indicating high reliability for armor made from this material.

Stretchable Composite Acoustic Transducer for Wearable Monitoring of Vital Signs.

Project description:A highly flexible, stretchable, and mechanically robust low-cost soft composite consisting of silicone polymers and water (or hydrogels) is reported. When combined with conventional acoustic transducers, the materials reported enable high performance real-time monitoring of heart and respiratory patterns over layers of clothing (or furry skin of animals) without the need for direct contact with the skin. The approach enables an entirely new method of fabrication that involves encapsulation of water and hydrogels with silicones and exploits the ability of sound waves to travel through the body. The system proposed outperforms commercial, metal-based stethoscopes for the auscultation of the heart when worn over clothing and is less susceptible to motion artefacts. The system both with human and furry animal subjects (i.e., dogs), primarily focusing on monitoring the heart, is tested; however, initial results on monitoring breathing are also presented. This work is especially important because it is the first demonstration of a stretchable sensor that is suitable for use with furry animals and does not require shaving of the animal for data acquisition.
