The Au₂₅(pMBA)₁₇Diglyme Cluster.

ABSTRACT: A modification of Au₂₅(pMBA)₁₈ that incorporates one diglyme ligand as a direct synthetic product is reported. Notably the expected statistical production of clusters containing other ligand stoichiometries is not observed. This Au₂₅(pMBA)₁₇diglyme product is characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and optical spectroscopy. Thiolate for thiolate ligand exchange proceeds on this cluster, whereas thiolate for diglyme ligand exchange does not.

Jahn-Teller effects in Au25(SR)18.

Project description:The relationship between oxidation state, structure, and magnetism in many molecules is well described by first-order Jahn-Teller distortions. This relationship is not yet well defined for ligated nanoclusters and nanoparticles, especially the nano-technologically relevant gold-thiolate protected metal clusters. Here we interrogate the relationships between structure, magnetism, and oxidation state for the three stable oxidation states, -1, 0 and +1 of the thiolate protected nanocluster Au25(SR)18. We present the single crystal X-ray structures of the previously undetermined charge state Au25(SR)18+1, as well as a higher quality single crystal structure of the neutral compound Au25(SR)180. Structural data combined with SQUID magnetometry and DFT theory enable a complete description of the optical and magnetic properties of Au25(SR)18 in the three oxidation states. In aggregate the data suggests a first-order Jahn-Teller distortion in this compound. The high quality single crystal X-ray structure enables an analysis of the ligand-ligand and ligand-cluster packing interactions that underlie single-crystal formation in thiolate protected metal clusters.

Polarization properties of fluorescent BSA protected Au25 nanoclusters.

Project description:BSA protected gold nanoclusters (Au25) are attracting a great deal of attention due to their unique spectroscopic properties and possible use in biophysical applications. Although there are reports on synthetic strategies, spectroscopy and applications, little is known about their polarization behavior. In this study, we synthesized the BSA protected Au25 nanoclusters and studied their steady state and time resolved fluorescence properties including polarization behavior in different solvents: glycerol, propylene glycol and water. We demonstrated that the nanocluster absorption spectrum can be separated from the extinction spectrum by subtraction of Rayleigh scattering. The nanocluster absorption spectrum is well approximated by three Gaussian components. By a comparison of the emissions from BSA Au25 clusters and rhodamine B in water, we estimated the quantum yield of nanoclusters to be higher than 0.06. The fluorescence lifetime of BSA Au25 clusters is long and heterogeneous with an average value of 1.84 ?s. In glycerol at -20 °C the anisotropy is high, reaching a value of 0.35. However, the excitation anisotropy strongly depends on the excitation wavelengths indicating a significant overlap of the different transition moments. The anisotropy decay in water reveals a correlation time below 0.2 ?s. In propylene glycol the measured correlation time is longer and the initial anisotropy depends on the excitation wavelength. BSA Au25 clusters, due to long lifetime and high polarization, can potentially be used in studying large macromolecules such as protein complexes with large molecular weight.

Practical Stability of Au25(SR)18-1/0/+1.

Project description:Superatom electron shell and/or geometric shell filling underlies the thermodynamic stability of coinage and alkali metal clusters in both theoretical and experimental results. Factors beyond simple shell filling contribute substantially to the lifetime of ligated clusters in solution. Such factors include the nature of the solvent, the atmosphere and the steric size of the ligand shell. Here we systematically lay out a 'practical' stability model for ligated metal clusters, which includes both shell-closing aspects and colloidal stability aspects. Cluster decomposition may follow either fusion or fission pathways. Solvent polarity can be determinative of the decomposition pathway.

Controlled Synthesis of Au25 Superatom Using a Dendrimer Template

Project description:Superatoms are promising materials for their potential in elemental substitution and as new building blocks. Thus far, various synthesis methods of thiol-protected Au clusters including an Au25 superatom have been investigated. However, previously reported methods were mainly depending on the thermodynamic stability of the aimed clusters. In this report, a synthesis method for thiol-protected Au clusters using a dendrimers template is proposed. In this method, the number of Au atoms was controlled by the stepwise complexation feature of a phenylazomethine dendrimer. Therefore, synthesis speed was increased compared with the case without the dendrimer template. Hybridization for the Au25 superatoms was also achieved using the complexation control of metals.

Stibine-protected Au13 nanoclusters: syntheses, properties and facile conversion to GSH-protected Au25 nanocluster.

Project description:Monostibine-protected ionic Au13 nanoclusters, namely, [Au13(L)8(Cl)4][Cl] (L= SbPh3, 2a·Cl; Sb(p-tolyl)3, 2b·Cl) were prepared by the direct reduction of Au(L)Cl with NaBH4 in dichloromethane. Anion exchange with 2a·Cl afforded [Au13(SbPh3)8(Cl)4][X] (X = PF6, 2a·PF6; BPh4, 2a·BPh4). All these have been characterized by multinuclear NMR, ESI-MS and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Crystallographic analysis of 2a·BPh4 reveals that the cation possesses C 2v symmetry and the tridecagold core adopts a closed icosahedron configuration. The weaker coordinating ability of the stibine ligands leads to the ready reaction of 2b·Cl with PPh3 or glutathione (GSH) to form the smaller phosphine-protected cluster [Au11(PPh3)8Cl2][Cl] or larger thiolate-protected cluster Au25(SG)18, respectively. In the latter reaction, the addition of a small amount (0.5 to 3.5 equivalents) of a suitable oxidant such as K3(Fe(CN)6 accelerates the conversion rate significantly.

Au25 clusters as electron-transfer catalysts induced the intramolecular cascade reaction of 2-nitrobenzonitrile.

Project description:Design of atomically precise metal nanocluster catalysts is of great importance in understanding the essence of the catalytic reactions at the atomic level. Here, for the first time, Au25(z) nanoslusters were employed as electron transfer catalysts to induce an intramolecular cascade reaction at ambient conditions and gave rise to high conversion (87%) and selectivity (96%). Electron spin-resonance spectra indeed confirmed the consecutive electron transfer process and the formation of N radical. UV-vis absorption spectra also verified Au25(z) was intact after the catalytic circle. Our research may open up wide opportunities for extensive organic reactions catalyzed by Au25(z).

Atomically Precise Au25(SG)18 Nanoclusters: Rapid Single-Step Synthesis and Application in Photothermal Therapy.

Project description:Remarkable recent advances on Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters have led to significant applications in catalysis, sensing, and magnetism. However, the existing synthetic routes are complicated, particularly for the water-soluble Au25(SG)18 nanoclusters. Here, we report a single-step concentration and temperature-controlled method for rapid synthesis of the Au25(SG)18 nanoclusters in as little as 2 h without the need for low-temperature reaction or even stirring. A systematic time-based investigation was carried out to study the effects of volume, concentration, and temperature on the synthesis of these nanoclusters. Further, we discovered for the first time that the Au25(SG)18 nanoclusters exhibit excellent photothermal activities in achieving 100% cell death for MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells at a power of 10 W/cm2 using an 808 nm laser source, demonstrating applications toward photothermal therapy.
