Facile Organometallic Synthesis of Fe-Based Nanomaterials by Hot Injection Reaction.

ABSTRACT: Fe-based colloids with a core/shell structure consisting of metallic iron and iron oxide were synthesized by a facile hot injection reaction of iron pentacarbonyl in a multi-surfactant mixture. The size of the colloidal particles was affected by the reaction temperature and the results demonstrated that their stability against complete oxidation related to their size. The crystal structure and the morphology were identified by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, while the magnetic properties were studied at room temperature with a vibrating sample magnetometer. The injection temperature plays a very crucial role and higher temperatures enhance the stability and the resistance against oxidation. For the case of injection at 315 °C, the nanoparticles had around a 10 nm mean diameter and revealed 132 emu/g. Remarkably, a stable dispersion was created due to the colloids' surface functionalization in a nonpolar solvent.

Facile Synthesis of 3d Transition-Metal-Doped α-Co(OH)2 Nanomaterials in Water-Methanol Mediated with Ammonia for Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Layered cobalt hydroxides are cost-efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the field of energy conversion. Herein, we developed a facile synthesis method of 3d transition-metal-doped α-Co(OH)2 nanomaterials mediated with ammonia in water-methanol at room temperature. The doping of Cu2+ and Ni2+ leads to flower-like nanostructures similar to pure α-Co(OH)2, whereas the doping of Fe2+ produces nanoparticles with more than 2 times larger surface area in comparison with the Cu2+- and Ni2+-doped nanoflowers. The obtained dispersion with the addition of Nafion can be used directly as an electrocatalyst for OER with excellent catalytic activity, especially that the overpotential of Fe2+ doped is as low as 290 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and the turnover frequency is improved by 3 times as compared with that of α-Co(OH)2. Furthermore, the catalyst can be loaded onto foam nickel, which presents excellent durability with the current density unchanged under continuous chronoamperometry reaction for as long as 12 h and almost quantitative faradaic efficiency. The superior electrocatalytic properties combined with the simple synthesis without the tedious purification procedure is very promising for OER.

Morphology controlled synthesis of Fe3+-doped upconversion nanomaterials.

Project description:This work details the synthesis of paramagnetic upconversion nanoparticles doped with Fe3+ in various morphologies via the thermal decomposition method, followed by comprehensive characterization of their structures, optical properties and magnetism using diverse analytical techniques. Our findings demonstrate that by precisely modulating the ratio of oleic acid to octadecene in the solvent, one can successfully obtain hexagonal nanodiscs with a consistent and well-defined morphology. Further adjustments in the oleic acid to octadecene ratio, coupled with fine-tuning of the Na+/F- ratio, led to the production of small-sized nanorods with uniform morphology. Significantly, all Fe3+-doped nanoparticles displayed pronounced paramagnetism, with magnetic susceptibility measurements at 1 T and room temperature of 0.15 emu g-1 and 0.14 emu g-1 for the nanodiscs and nanorods, respectively. To further enhance their magnetic properties, we replaced the Y-matrix with a Gd-matrix, and by fine-tuning the oleic acid/octadecene and Na+/F- ratios, we achieved nanoparticles with uniform morphology. The magnetic susceptibility was 0.82 emu g-1 at 1 T and room temperature. Simultaneously, we could control the nanoparticle size by altering the synthesis temperature. These upconversion nanostructures, characterized by both paramagnetic properties and regular morphology, represent promising dual-mode nanoprobe candidates for optical biological imaging and magnetic resonance imaging.

Facile Synthesis of Water-Soluble Rhodamine-Based Polymeric Chemosensors via Schiff Base Reaction for Fe3+ Detection and Living Cell Imaging.

Project description:Quantitative and accurate determination of iron ions play a vital role in maintaining environment and human health, but very few polymeric chemosensors were available for the detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solutions. Herein, a water-soluble rhodamine-poly (ethylene glycol) conjugate (DRF-PEG), as a dual responsive colorimetric and fluorescent polymeric sensor for Fe3+ detection with high biocompatibility, was first synthesized through Schiff base reaction between rhodamine 6G hydrazide and benzaldehyde-functionalized polyethylene glycol. As expected, the introduction of PEG segment in DRF-PEG significantly improved the water solubility of rhodamine derivatives and resulted in a good biosensing performance. The detection limit of DRF-PEG for Fe3+ in pure water is 1.00 μM as a fluorescent sensor and 3.16 μM as a colorimetric sensor at pH 6.5. The specific sensing mechanism of DRF-PEG toward Fe3+ is proposed based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism, in which the O and N atoms in rhodamine moiety, together with the benzene groups from benzaldehyde-modified PEG segment, participate in coordination with Fe3+. Furthermore, DRF-PEG was applied for the ratiometric imaging of Fe3+ in HeLa cells and showed the potential for quantitative determination of Fe3+ in fetal bovine serum samples. This work provides insights for the design of water-soluble chemosensors, which can be implemented in iron-related biological sensing and clinical diagnosis.

Synthesis of Antimicrobial Gallium Nanoparticles Using the Hot Injection Method.

Project description:Antibiotic resistance continues to be an ongoing problem in global public health despite interventions to reduce antibiotic overuse. Furthermore, it threatens to undo the achievements and progress of modern medicine. To address these issues, the development of new alternative treatments is needed. Metallic nanoparticles have become an increasingly attractive alternative due to their unique physicochemical properties that allow for different applications and their various mechanisms of action. In this study, gallium nanoparticles (Ga NPs) were tested against several clinical strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (DFU53, 364077, and 365707) and multi-drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (MRAB). The results showed that Ga NPs did not inhibit bacterial growth when tested against the bacterial strains using a broth microdilution assay, but they exhibited effects in biofilm production in P. aeruginosa DFU53. Furthermore, as captured by atomic force microscopy imaging, P. aeruginosa DFU53 and MRAB biofilms underwent morphological changes, appearing rough and irregular when they were treated with Ga NPs. Although Ga NPs did not affect planktonic bacterial growth, their effects on both biofilm formation and established biofilm demonstrate their potential role in the race to combat antibiotic resistance, especially in biofilm-related infections.

An Organometallic Strategy for Assembling Atomically Precise Hybrid Nanomaterials.

Project description:For decades, chemists have strived to mimic the intricate design and diverse functions of naturally occurring systems through the bioinspired synthesis of programmable inorganic nanomaterials. The development of thiol-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has driven advancement in this area; however, although versatile and readily accessible, hybrid AuNPs are rarely atomically precise, which limits control over their surface topology and therefore the study of complex structure-function relationships. Here, we present a bottom-up approach to the systematic assembly of atomically precise hybrid nanoclusters employing a strategy that mimics the synthetic ease with which thiol-capped AuNPs are normally constructed, while producing well-defined covalent nanoscale assemblies with diverse surface topologies. For the first time, using a structurally characterized cluster-based organometallic building block, we demonstrate the systematic synthesis of nanoclusters with multivalent binding capabilities to complex protein targets.

Facile synthesis of 5-arylidene thiohydantoin by sequential sulfonylation/desulfination reaction.

Project description:The sequential sulfonylation/desulfination reactions of 5-benzylthiohydantoin with excess arylsulfonyl chlorides in the presence of triethylamine have been developed to afford a wide range of 5-arylidene thiohydantoin derivatives in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible sulfonylation/desulfination mechanism was proposed. The bioassay showed that these compounds exhibit certain fungicidal activities with the 71.9% inhibition rate of 2K against B. cinerea, and 57.6% inhibition rate of 2m against A. solani, respectively.

Facile Synthesis of Hydrogen-Substituted Graphdiyne Powder via Dehalogenative Homocoupling Reaction.

Project description:Graphdiyne and its analogs are a series of artificial two-dimensional nanomaterials with sp hybridized carbon atoms, which can be viewed as the insertion of two acetylenic units between adjacent aromatic rings, evenly expanded on a flat surface. Although developed in recent years, new synthetic strategies for graphdiyne analogs are still required. This work proposed a new method to prepare hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne powder via a dehalogenative homocoupling reaction. The polymerization was unanticipated while the initial goal was to synthesize a γ-graphyne analog via Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. Compared with previous synthetic strategies, the reaction time was conspicuously shortened and the Pd catalyst was inessential. The powder obtained exhibited a porous structure and high electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction, which has the potential for application in electrochemical catalysis. The reported methodology provides an efficient synthetic strategy for large-scale preparation.

Facile Synthesis of Quaternary Structurally Ordered L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 Nanoparticles with Low Content of Platinum as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysts.

Project description:Synthesis of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with not only prominent electrocatalytic performance but also a low amount of Pt is the urgent challenge in the popularization of fuel cells. In this work, through a facile synthetic strategy of spray dehydration on a solid surface and annealing process, we demonstrate the first manufacture of quaternary structurally ordered PtM3 (M = transition metal) intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs), Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3, in order to lower the content of Pt. The atomic contents of Pt, Fe, Co, and Ni are equal and the chemical structure of Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 is a cubic L12-ordered structure. L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3/C electrocatalysts exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic performance toward ORR with mass activity (MA) 6.6 times higher than the commercial Pt/C and a minimal loss of 17% in MA and 1.5% loss in specific activity (SA) after 10 000 potential cycles at 0.9 V. Furthermore, the stability behavior is confirmed to be attributed to the coaction of particle sizes and the ordering effect. Compared with traditional Pt-based electrocatalysts in the stoichiometric forms of Pt3M and PtM, L12-Pt(Fe, Co, Ni)3 intermetallic NPs exhibit excellent performance and higher cost effectiveness. Moreover, this work also proposes a facile and effective synthetic strategy for manufacturing multicomponent Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR.

Facile green synthesis of silicon nanoparticles from Equisetum arvense for fluorescence based detection of Fe(iii) ions.

Project description:Fluorescent silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) might be one of the excellent candidates for use as optical markers in biological profiling and diagnostic applications. To exploit this perspective, they ought to be essentially synthesized from any green precursor rich in silicon. Stable dispersibility in water along with prolonged luminescence under different conditions is also desired. Moreover, one of the main challenges is to produce such optically (photoluminescence) stable and water-dispersible SiNPs. In our present work, we have reported the synthesis of a highly stable silicon nanoparticle aqueous suspension via a single-step microwave-assisted facile green route. Our as-prepared SiNPs exhibit inherent stable dispersibility, strong fluorescence, and photo-stable behavior. The experimental results demonstrate that the synthesized SiNPs are highly suitable for the detection of Fe(iii) ions. This optical sensing study opens a new avenue for use of SiNPs as a valuable optical probe in chemosensory applications. Our results provide a single-step methodology for the synthesis of highly stable SiNPs from a biological precursor, which can be used as a promising tool for various chemical and biological applications.

Facile Preparation of Organometallic Nanorods from Various Ethynyl-Substituted Molecules.

Project description:A facile method to prepare one-dimensional (1D) organometallic nanomaterials from various ethynyl-substituted molecules is reported. The reactions of 3-chloro-1-ethynylbenzene, p-tBu-phenylacetylene and 4-ethynylbiphenyl with Cu+ ions in acetonitrile yield nanorod-shaped copper acetylides (Cu-C≡C-R) crystals. In the case of linear alkynes, namely, propyne, 1-pentyne and 1-hexyne, it was found that using an aqueous ammonia/ethanol mixed solvent instead of acetonitrile is a better approach to obtain 1D nanostructures. This procedure also enables us to prepare functional 1D nanomaterials. We demonstrate the preparation of a paramagnetic nanorod from the organic radical p-ethynylphenyl nitronyl nitroxide, and fluorescent nanorods from 9-ethynylphenanthrene and 2-ethynyl-9,9'-spirobifluorene.
