Cucurbiturils brighten Au nanoclusters in water.

ABSTRACT: Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with well-defined atomically precise structures present promising emissive prospects for excellent biocompatibility and optical properties. However, the relatively low luminescence efficiency in solutions for most AuNCs is still a perplexing issue to be resolved. In this study, a facile supramolecular strategy was developed to rigidify the surface of FGGC-AuNCs by modifying transition rates in excited states via host-guest self-assembly between cucurbiturils (CBs) and FGGC (Phe-Gly-Gly-Cys peptide). In aqueous solutions, CB/FGGC-AuNCs presented an extremely enhanced red phosphorescence emission with a quantum yield (QY) of 51% for CB[7] and 39% for CB[8], while simple FGGC-AuNCs only showed a weak emission with a QY of 7.5%. Furthermore, CB[7]/FGGC-AuNCs showed excellent results in live cell luminescence imaging for A549 cancer cells. Our study demonstrates that host-guest self-assembly assisted by macrocycles is a facile and effective tool to non-covalently modify and adjust optical properties of nanostructures on ultra-small scales.

NHC-Stabilized Au10 Nanoclusters and Their Conversion to Au25 Nanoclusters.

Project description:Herein, we describe the synthesis of a toroidal Au10 cluster stabilized by N-heterocyclic carbene and halide ligands via reduction of the corresponding NHC-Au-X complexes (X = Cl, Br, I). The significant effect of the halide ligands on the formation, stability, and further conversions of these clusters is presented. While solutions of the chloride derivatives of Au10 show no change even upon heating, the bromide derivative readily undergoes conversion to form a biicosahedral Au25 cluster at room temperature. For the iodide derivative, the formation of a significant amount of Au25 was observed even upon the reduction of NHC-Au-I. The isolated bromide derivative of the Au25 cluster displays a relatively high (ca. 15%) photoluminescence quantum yield, attributed to the high rigidity of the cluster, which is enforced by multiple CH-π interactions within the molecular structure. Density functional theory computations are used to characterize the electronic structure and optical absorption of the Au10 cluster. 13C-Labeling is employed to assist with characterization of the products and to observe their conversions by NMR spectroscopy.

Revealing the etching process of water-soluble Au25 nanoclusters at the molecular level.

Project description:Etching (often considered as decomposition) is one of the key considerations in the synthesis, storage, and application of metal nanoparticles. However, the underlying chemistry of their etching process still remains elusive. Here, we use real-time electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to study the reaction dynamics and size/structure evolution of all the stable intermediates during the etching of water-soluble thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (Au NCs), which reveal an unusual "recombination" process in the oxidative reaction environment after the initial decomposition process. Interestingly, the sizes of NC species grow larger and their ligand-to-metal ratios become higher during this recombination process, which are distinctly different from that observed in the reductive growth of Au NCs (e.g., lower ligand-to-metal ratios with increasing sizes). The etching chemistry revealed in this study provides molecular-level understandings on how metal nanoparticles transform under the oxidative reaction environment, providing efficient synthetic strategies for new NC species through the etching reactions.

Single Au Atom Doping of Silver Nanoclusters.

Project description:Ag29 nanoclusters capped with lipoic acid (LA) can be doped with Au. The doped clusters show enhanced stability and increased luminescence efficiency. We attribute the higher quantum yield to an increase in the rate of radiative decay. With mass spectrometry, the Au-doped clusters were found to consist predominantly of Au1Ag28(LA)123-. The clusters were characterized using X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Au L3-edge. Both the extended absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and the near edge structure (XANES) in combination with electronic structure calculations confirm that the Au dopant is preferentially located in the center of the cluster. A useful XANES spectrum can be recorded for lower concentrations, or in shorter time, than the more commonly used EXAFS. This makes XANES a valuable tool for structural characterization.

Electrodeless Synthesis of Low Dispersity Au Nanoparticles and Nanoclusters at an Immiscible Micro Water/Ionic Liquid Interface.

Project description:Owing to their biocompatibility, optical, and catalytic properties, Au nanoparticles (NPs) have been the subject of much research. Since smaller NPs have enhanced catalytic properties and NP morphology greatly impacts their effectiveness, controlled and reproducible methods of generating Au NPs are still being sought. Herein, Au NPs were electrochemically generated at a water|ionic liquid (w|IL) immiscible micro-interface, 25 µm in diameter, using a redox active IL and compared to results at a water|oil (w|o) one. The liquid|liquid interface is advantageous as it is pristine and highly reproducible, as well as an excellent means of species and charge separation. In this system, KAuCl4 dissolved in the aqueous phase reacts under external potential control at the water|P8888TB (tetraoctylphosphonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate) with trioctyl(ferrocenylhexanoyl)phosphonium tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate (FcIL), an electron donor and redox active IL. FcIL was prepared with a common anion to P8888TB, which greatly enhances its solubility in the bulk IL. Simple ion transfer of AuCl4− and AuCl(4−γ)(OH)γ− at the w|P8888TB micro-interface were characterized voltammetrically as well as their heterogeneous electron transfer reaction with FcIL. This interfacial reaction generates Au NPs whose size can be thermodynamically controlled by modifying the pH of the aqueous phase. Critically, at low pH, nanoclusters, <1.7 nm in diameter, were generated owing to inhibited thermodynamics in combination with the supramolecular fluidic nature of the IL microenvironment that was observed surrounding the as-prepared NPs.

Physical Origin of Dual-Emission of Au-Ag Bimetallic Nanoclusters.

Project description:On the origin of photoluminescence of noble metal NCs, there are always hot debates: metal-centered quantum-size confinement effect VS ligand-centered surface state mechanism. Herein, we provided solid evidence that structural water molecules (SWs) confined in the nanocavity formed by surface-protective-ligand packing on the metal NCs are the real luminescent emitters of Au-Ag bimetal NCs. The Ag cation mediated Au-Ag bimetal NCs exhibit the unique pH-dependent dual-emission characteristic with larger Stokes shift up to 200 nm, which could be used as potential ratiometric nanosensors for pH detection. Our results provide a completely new insight on the understanding of the origin of photoluminescence of metal NCs, which elucidates the abnormal PL emission phenomena, including solvent effect, pH-dependent behavior, surface ligand effect, multiple emitter centers, and large-Stoke's shift.

Quantum Mechanical Modeling of the Interactions between Noble Metal (Ag and Au) Nanoclusters and Water with the Effective Fragment Potential Method.

Project description:Explicit solvent interactions can significantly alter the physical and chemical properties of noble metal (e.g., gold and silver) nanoclusters. In order to compute these solvent interactions at a reasonable computational cost, a quantum mechanical (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) approach, where the metal nanocluster is treated with full QM and the water molecules are treated with a MM force field, can be used. However, classical MM force fields were typically parameterized using molecules containing main group elements as the reference. The accuracy of noble metal-solvent interactions obtained with these force fields therefore remains unpredictable. The effective fragment potential (EFP) force field, designed to model explicitly solvated systems, represents an attractive method to simulate solvated noble metal nanoclusters because it is derived from first principles and contains few or no fitted parameters, depending on implementation. At the density functional theory-optimized geometries, good correlation is obtained between the nanocluster-water interaction energies computed with EFP and those computed with the reference coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples method. It is shown that the EFP method gives qualitatively accurate interaction energies at medium-large intermolecular distances for various molecular configurations. In order to achieve higher quantitative accuracy, the first solvation shell should be treated with full QM, if possible. EFP is therefore a promising method for the QM modeling of explicitly solvated silver and gold nanoclusters.

Human Nontumorigenic Microglia Synthesize Strongly Fluorescent Au/Fe Nanoclusters, Retaining Bioavailability.

Project description:The ability for cells to self-synthesize metal-core nanoclusters (mcNCs) offers increased imaging and identification opportunities. To date, much work has been done illustrating the ability for human tumorigenic cell lines to synthesize mcNCs; however, this has not been illustrated for nontumorigenic cell lines. Here, we present the ability for human nontumorigenic microglial cells, which are the major immune cells in the central nervous system, to self-synthesize gold (Au) and iron (Fe) core nanoclusters, following exposures to metallic salts. We also show the ability for cells to internalize presynthesized Au and Fe mcNCs. Cellular fluorescence increased in most exposures and in a dose dependent manner in the case of Au salt. Scanning transmission electron microscopic imaging confirmed the presence of the metal within cells, while transmission electron microscopy images confirmed nanocluster structures and self-synthesis. Interestingly, self-synthesized nanoclusters were of similar size and internal structure as presynthesized mcNCs. Toxicity assessment of both salts and presynthesized NCs illustrated a lack of toxicity from Au salt and presynthesized NCs. However, Fe salt was generally more toxic and stressful to cells at similar concentrations.

Engineering Au Nanoclusters for Relay Luminescence Enhancement with Aggregation-Induced Emission.

Project description:The research of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has been growing rapidly for the design of highly luminescent materials, as exemplified by the library of AIE-active materials (or AIEgens) fabricated and explored for diverse applications in different fields. Herein, we reported a relay luminescence enhancement of luminescent Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) through AIE. In addition, we demonstrated the emergence of reduced aggregation-caused luminescence by adjusting the temperature of the Au NC solution. The key to induce this effect is to attach a thermosensitive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) on the surface of Au NCs, which will shrink at high temperature. More interestingly, the as-synthesized Au NCs-PNIPAAm can self-assemble into vesicles, resulting in an obvious decrease in the luminescence intensity in aqueous solution. The combination of relay luminescence enhancement (by AIE) and luminescence decrease (induced by thermosensitive polymers) will be beneficial to the understanding and manipulation of the optical properties of Au NCs, paving the way for their practical applications.

Post-Synthesis Modification of Photoluminescent and Electrochemiluminescent Au Nanoclusters with Dopamine.

Project description:Here, we report a post-synthesis functionalization of the shell of Au nanoclusters (NCs) synthesized using glutathione as a thiolate ligand. The as-synthesized Au NCs are subjected to the post-synthesis functionalization via amidic coupling of dopamine on the cluster shell to tailor photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) features of the Au NCs. Because the NCs' PL at ca. 610 nm is primarily ascribed to the Au(I)-thiolate (SG) motifs on the cluster shell of the NCs, the post-synthesis functionalization of the cluster shell enhanced the PL intensity of the Au NCs via rigidification of the cluster shell. In contrast to the PL enhancement, the post-synthesis modification of the cluster shell does not enhance the near-infrared (NIR) ECL of the NCs because the NIR ECL at ca. 800 nm is ascribed to the Au(0)-SG motifs in the metallic core of the NCs.

Structural order enhances charge carrier transport in self-assembled Au-nanoclusters.

Project description:The collective properties of self-assembled nanoparticles with long-range order bear immense potential for customized electronic materials by design. However, to mitigate the shortcoming of the finite-size distribution of nanoparticles and thus, the inherent energetic disorder within assemblies, atomically precise nanoclusters are the most promising building blocks. We report an easy and broadly applicable method for the controlled self-assembly of atomically precise Au32(nBu3P)12Cl8 nanoclusters into micro-crystals. This enables the determination of emergent optoelectronic properties which resulted from long-range order in such assemblies. Compared to the same nanoclusters in glassy, polycrystalline ensembles, we find a 100-fold increase in the electric conductivity and charge carrier mobility as well as additional optical transitions. We show that these effects are due to a vanishing energetic disorder and a drastically reduced activation energy to charge transport in the highly ordered assemblies. This first correlation of structure and electronic properties by comparing glassy and crystalline self-assembled superstructures of atomically precise gold nanoclusters paves the way towards functional materials with novel collective optoelectronic properties.
