In situ photografting during direct laser writing in thermoplastic microchannels.

ABSTRACT: A method for in situ photografting during direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization is presented. The technique serves as a powerful approach to the formation of covalent bonds between 3D photoresist structures and thermoplastic surfaces. By leveraging the same laser for both pattern generation and localized surface reactions, crosslinking between the bulk photoresist and thermoplastic surface is achieved during polymerization. When applied to in-channel direct laser writing for microfluidic device fabrication, the process yields exceptionally strong adhesion and robust bond interfaces that can withstand pressure gradients as high as 7 MPa through proper channel design, photoinitiator selection, and processing conditions.

Geometric Determinants of In-Situ Direct Laser Writing.

Project description:Direct laser writing (DLW) is a three-dimensional (3D) manufacturing technology that offers significant geometric versatility at submicron length scales. Although these characteristics hold promise for fields including organ modeling and microfluidic processing, difficulties associated with facilitating the macro-to-micro interfaces required for fluid delivery have limited the utility of DLW for such applications. To overcome this issue, here we report an in-situ DLW (isDLW) strategy for creating 3D nanostructured features directly inside of-and notably, fully sealed to-sol-gel-coated elastomeric microchannels. In particular, we investigate the role of microchannel geometry (e.g., cross-sectional shape and size) in the sealing performance of isDLW-printed structures. Experiments revealed that increasing the outward tapering of microchannel sidewalls improved fluidic sealing integrity for channel heights ranging from 10 ?m to 100 ?m, which suggests that conventional microchannel fabrication approaches are poorly suited for isDLW. As a demonstrative example, we employed isDLW to 3D print a microfluidic helical coil spring diode and observed improved flow rectification performance at higher pressures-an indication of effective structure-to-channel sealing. We envision that the ability to readily integrate 3D nanostructured fluidic motifs with the entire luminal surface of elastomeric channels will open new avenues for emerging applications in areas such as soft microrobotics and biofluidic microsystems.

Direct Laser Writing of SERS Hollow Fibers.

Project description:We report the direct laser writing (DLW) of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) structures on the inner wall of a hollow fiber. Colloidal gold-silver alloy nanoparticles (Au-Ag ANPs) are firstly coated onto the inner wall of a hollow fiber. A green laser beam is focused through the outer surface of the hollow fiber to interact with colloidal Au-Ag ANPs so that they become melted and aggregated on the surface of the inner wall with strong adhesion. Such randomly distributed plasmonic nanostructures with high density and small gaps favor the SERS detection of low-concentration molecules in liquids flowing through the hollow fiber. Such a SERS device also supplies a three-dimensional microcavity for the interaction between excitation laser and the target molecules. The DLW system consists mainly of the flexible connection between the motor shaft and the hollow fiber, the program-controlled translation of the hollow fiber along its symmetric axis and rotation about the axis, as well as the mechanical design and the computer control system. This DLW technique enables high production, high stability, high reproducibility, high precision, and a high-flexibility fabrication of the hollow fiber SERS device. The resultant microcavity SERS scheme enables the high-sensitivity detection of R6G molecules in ethanol with a concentration of 10-7 mol/L.

To demonstrate their responsive nature, visible colour changes in the presence of different solvent vapours were investigated. Direct Laser Writing of Nanophotonic Structures on Contact Lenses.

Project description:Contact lenses are ubiquitous biomedical devices used for vision correction and cosmetic purposes. Their application as quantitative analytical devices is highly promising for point-of-care diagnostics. However, it is a challenge to integrate nanoscale features into commercial contact lenses for application in low-cost biosensors. A neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (1064 nm, 3 ns pulse, 240 mJ) in holographic interference patterning mode was utilized to produce optical nanostructures over the surface of a hydrogel contact lens. One-dimensional (925 nm) and two-dimensional (925 nm × 925 nm) nanostructures were produced on contact lenses and analyzed by spectroscopy and angle-resolve measurements. The holographic properties of these nanostructures were tested in ambient moisture, fully hydrated, and artificial tear conditions. The measurements showed a rapid tuning of optical diffraction from these nanostructures from 41 to 48°. The nanostructures were patterned near the edges of the contact lens to avoid any interference and obstruction to the human vision. The formation of 2D nanostructures on lenses increased the diffraction efficiency by more than 10%. The versatility of the holographic laser ablation method was demonstrated by producing four different 2D nanopattern geometries on contact lenses. Hydrophobicity of the contact lens was characterized by contact angle measurements, which increased from 59.0° at pristine condition to 62.5° at post-nanofabrication. The holographic nanostructures on the contact lens were used to sense the concentration of Na+ ions. Artificial tear solution was used to simulate the conditions in dry eye syndrome, and nanostructures on the contact lenses were used to detect the electrolyte concentration changes (±47 mmol L-1). Nanopatterns on a contact lens may be used to sense other ocular diseases in early stages at point-of-care settings.

Holographic direct pulsed laser writing of two-dimensional nanostructures.

Project description:The development of accurate and rapid techniques to produce nanophotonic structures is essential in data storage, sensors, and spectroscopy. Existing bottom-up and top-down approaches to fabricate nanophotonic devices are high cost and time consuming, limiting their mass manufacturing and practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to rapidly create 25-40 nm thick 1/2D Au-Ti nanopatterns using holographic direct laser interference patterning (DLIP). Pulses of an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) in holographic Denisyuk reflection mode were used to create ablative interference fringes. The constructive interference antinode regions of the standing wave selectively ablated a Au-Ti layer in localized regions to controllably form nanogratings. Varying the laser exposure parameters allowed for rapid patterning of 2D square and rectangular arrays within seconds. Controlling the distances between the laser source, recording medium, and the object, allowed for achieving a 2D spatial grating periodicity of 640 nm × 640 nm. Diffracted and transmitted light spectra of 2D nanostructure arrays were analyzed using angle-resolved measurements and spectroscopy.

Direct laser writing of 3D electrodes on flexible substrates.

Project description:This report describes a 3D microelectrode array integrated on a thin-film flexible cable for neural recording in small animals. The fabrication process combines traditional silicon thin-film processing techniques and direct laser writing of 3D structures at micron resolution via two-photon lithography. Direct laser-writing of 3D-printed electrodes has been described before, but this report is the first to provide a method for producing high-aspect-ratio structures. One prototype, a 16-channel array with 300 µm pitch, demonstrates successful electrophysiological signal capture from bird and mouse brains. Additional devices include 90 µm pitch arrays, biomimetic mosquito needles that penetrate through the dura of birds, and porous electrodes with enhanced surface area. The rapid 3D printing and wafer-scale methods described here will enable efficient device fabrication and new studies examining the relationship between electrode geometry and electrode performance. Applications include small animal models, nerve interfaces, retinal implants, and other devices requiring compact, high-density 3D electrodes.

Direct laser writing of volumetric gradient index lenses and waveguides.

Project description:Direct laser writing (DLW) has been shown to render 3D polymeric optical components, including lenses, beam expanders, and mirrors, with submicrometer precision. However, these printed structures are limited to the refractive index and dispersive properties of the photopolymer. Here, we present the subsurface controllable refractive index via beam exposure (SCRIBE) method, a lithographic approach that enables the tuning of the refractive index over a range of greater than 0.3 by performing DLW inside photoresist-filled nanoporous silicon and silica scaffolds. Adjusting the laser exposure during printing enables 3D submicron control of the polymer infilling and thus the refractive index and chromatic dispersion. Combining SCRIBE's unprecedented index range and 3D writing accuracy has realized the world's smallest (15 µm diameter) spherical Luneburg lens operating at visible wavelengths. SCRIBE's ability to tune the chromatic dispersion alongside the refractive index was leveraged to render achromatic doublets in a single printing step, eliminating the need for multiple photoresins and writing sequences. SCRIBE also has the potential to form multicomponent optics by cascading optical elements within a scaffold. As a demonstration, stacked focusing structures that generate photonic nanojets were fabricated inside porous silicon. Finally, an all-pass ring resonator was coupled to a subsurface 3D waveguide. The measured quality factor of 4600 at 1550 nm suggests the possibility of compact photonic systems with optical interconnects that traverse multiple planes. SCRIBE is uniquely suited for constructing such photonic integrated circuits due to its ability to integrate multiple optical components, including lenses and waveguides, without additional printed supports.

Direct Laser Writing of ?- to ?-Phase Transformation in Formamidinium Lead Iodide.

Project description:Organolead halide perovskites are increasingly considered for applications well beyond photovoltaics, for example, as the active regions within photonic devices. Herein, we report the direct laser writing (DLW: 458 nm cw-laser) of the formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) yellow ?-phase into its high-temperature luminescent black ?-phase, a remarkably easy and scalable approach that takes advantage of the material's susceptibility to transition under ambient conditions. Through the DLW of ?-FAPbI3 tracks on ?-FAPbI3 single-crystal surfaces, the controlled and rapid microfabrication of highly luminescent structures exhibiting long-term phase stability is detailed, offering an avenue toward the prototyping of complex perovskite-based optical devices. The dynamics and kinetics of laser-induced ?- to ?-phase transformations are investigated in situ by Raman microprobe analysis, as a function of irradiation power, time, temperature, and atmospheric conditions, revealing an interesting connection between oxygen intercalation at the surface and the ?- to ?-phase transformation dynamics, an insight that will find application within the wider context of FAPbI3 thermal phase relations.

Selective 6H-SiC White Light Emission by Picosecond Laser Direct Writing.

Project description:Displaying a full or tuneable emission spectrum with highly efficient is significant for luminescent materials used in solid-state lighting. Silicon carbide (SiC) has potential for use in photoelectric devices that operate under extreme conditions. In this paper, we present a method to selectively modify the photoluminescence (PL) properties of SiC by ultrafast laser direct writing. Based on this method, visible white PL could be observed by the naked eye at room temperature under ultraviolet excitation. By increasing the laser power intensity from 40 to 80 MW/cm2, the PL of the irradiated samples increased and pure white sunlight-like emission with controlled colour temperature was realised. The optimised laser power intensity of 65 MW/cm2 achieved a desirable colour temperature similar to that of sunlight (x = 0.33, y = 0.33 and colour temperature of 5500 K) and suppressed blue emission. By direct laser irradiation along designed scanning path, a large-scale and arbitrary pattern white emission was fabricated. The origin of the white luminescence was a mixture of multiple luminescent transitions of oxygen-related centres that turned the Si-C system into silicon oxycarbide. This work sheds light on new luminescent materials and a preparation technique for next-generation lighting devices.

Laser-assisted direct ink writing of planar and 3D metal architectures.

Project description:The ability to pattern planar and freestanding 3D metallic architectures at the microscale would enable myriad applications, including flexible electronics, displays, sensors, and electrically small antennas. A 3D printing method is introduced that combines direct ink writing with a focused laser that locally anneals printed metallic features "on-the-fly." To optimize the nozzle-to-laser separation distance, the heat transfer along the printed silver wire is modeled as a function of printing speed, laser intensity, and pulse duration. Laser-assisted direct ink writing is used to pattern highly conductive, ductile metallic interconnects, springs, and freestanding spiral architectures on flexible and rigid substrates.
