Data Consistency for Data-Driven Smart Energy Assessment.

ABSTRACT: In the smart grid era, the number of data available for different applications has increased considerably. However, data could not perfectly represent the phenomenon or process under analysis, so their usability requires a preliminary validation carried out by experts of the specific domain. The process of data gathering and transmission over the communication channels has to be verified to ensure that data are provided in a useful format, and that no external effect has impacted on the correct data to be received. Consistency of the data coming from different sources (in terms of timings and data resolution) has to be ensured and managed appropriately. Suitable procedures are needed for transforming data into knowledge in an effective way. This contribution addresses the previous aspects by highlighting a number of potential issues and the solutions in place in different power and energy system, including the generation, grid and user sides. Recent references, as well as selected historical references, are listed to support the illustration of the conceptual aspects.

Smart campus: Data on energy consumption in an ICT-driven university.

Project description:In this data article, we present a comprehensive dataset on electrical energy consumption in a university that is practically driven by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The total amount of electricity consumed at Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria was measured, monitored, and recorded on daily basis for a period of 12 consecutive months (January-December, 2016). Energy readings were observed from the digital energy meter (EDMI Mk10E) located at the distribution substation that supplies electricity to the university community. The complete energy data are clearly presented in tables and graphs for relevant utility and potential reuse. Also, descriptive first-order statistical analyses of the energy data are provided in this data article. For each month, the histogram distribution and time series plot of the monthly energy consumption data are analyzed to show insightful trends of energy consumption in the university. Furthermore, data on the significant differences in the means of daily energy consumption are made available as obtained from one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparison post-hoc tests. The information provided in this data article will foster research development in the areas of energy efficiency, planning, policy formulation, and management towards the realization of smart campuses.

Data-driven and privacy-preserving risk assessment method based on federated learning for smart grids.

Project description:Timely and precise security risk evaluation is essential for optimal operational planning, threat detection, and the reliable operation of smart grid. The smart grid can integrate extensive high-dimensional operational data. However, conventional risk assessment techniques often struggle with managing such data volumes. Moreover, many methods use centralized evaluation, potentially neglecting privacy issues. Additionally, Power grid operators are often reluctant to share sensitive risk-related data due to privacy concerns. Here we introduce a data-driven and privacy-preserving risk assessment method that safeguards Power grid operators' data privacy by integrating deep learning and secure encryption in a federated learning framework. The method involves: (1) developing a two-tier risk indicator system and an expanded dataset; (2) using a deep convolutional neural network -based model to analyze the relationship between system variables and risk levels; and (3) creating a secure, federated risk assessment protocol with homomorphic encryption to protect model parameters during training. Experiments on IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems show that our approach ensures high assessment accuracy and data privacy.

Leveraging data-driven self-consistency for high-fidelity gene expression recovery.

Project description:Single cell RNA sequencing is a promising technique to determine the states of individual cells and classify novel cell subtypes. In current sequence data analysis, however, genes with low expressions are omitted, which leads to inaccurate gene counts and hinders downstream analysis. Recovering these omitted expression values presents a challenge because of the large size of the data. Here, we introduce a data-driven gene expression recovery framework, referred to as self-consistent expression recovery machine (SERM), to impute the missing expressions. Using a neural network, the technique first learns the underlying data distribution from a subset of the noisy data. It then recovers the overall expression data by imposing a self-consistency on the expression matrix, thus ensuring that the expression levels are similarly distributed in different parts of the matrix. We show that SERM improves the accuracy of gene imputation with orders of magnitude enhancement in computational efficiency in comparison to the state-of-the-art imputation techniques.

Data-driven analysis of facial thermal responses and multimodal physiological consistency among subjects.

Project description:Facial infra-red imaging (IRI) is a contact-free technique complimenting the traditional psychophysiological measures to characterize physiological profile. However, its full potential in affective research is arguably unmet due to the analytical challenges it poses. Here we acquired facial IRI data, facial expressions and traditional physiological recordings (heart rate and skin conductance) from healthy human subjects whilst they viewed a 20-min-long unedited emotional movie. We present a novel application of motion correction and the results of spatial independent component analysis of the thermal data. Three distinct spatial components are recovered associated with the nose, the cheeks and respiration. We first benchmark this methodology against a traditional nose-tip region-of-interest based technique showing an expected similarity of signals extracted by these methods. We then show significant correlation of all the physiological responses across subjects, including the thermal signals, suggesting common dynamic shifts in emotional state induced by the movie. In sum, this study introduces an innovative approach to analyse facial IRI data and highlights the potential of thermal imaging to robustly capture emotion-related changes induced by ecological stimuli.

Smart distributed data factory volunteer computing platform for active learning-driven molecular data acquisition.

Project description:This paper presents the smart distributed data factory (SDDF), an AI-driven distributed computing platform designed to address challenges in drug discovery by creating comprehensive datasets of molecular conformations and their properties. SDDF uses volunteer computing, leveraging the processing power of personal computers worldwide to accelerate quantum chemistry (DFT) calculations. To tackle the vast chemical space and limited high-quality data, SDDF employs an ensemble of machine learning (ML) models to predict molecular properties and selectively choose the most challenging data points for further DFT calculations. The platform also generates new molecular conformations using molecular dynamics with the forces derived from these models. SDDF makes several contributions: the volunteer computing platform for DFT calculations; an active learning framework for constructing a dataset of molecular conformations; a large public dataset of diverse ENAMINE molecules with calculated energies; an ensemble of ML models for accurate energy prediction. The energy dataset was generated to validate the SDDF approach of reducing the need for extensive calculations. With its strict scaffold split, the dataset can be used for training and benchmarking energy models. By combining active learning, distributed computing, and quantum chemistry, SDDF offers a scalable, cost-effective solution for developing accurate molecular models and ultimately accelerating drug discovery.

Smart Buildings: A Comprehensive Systematic Literature Review on Data-Driven Building Management Systems.

Project description:Buildings are complex structures composed of heterogeneous elements; these require building management systems (BMSs) to dynamically adapt them to occupants' needs and leverage building resources. The fast growth of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has transformed the BMS field into a multidisciplinary one. Consequently, this has caused several research papers on data-driven solutions to require examination and classification. This paper provides a broad overview of BMS by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) summarizing current trends in this field. Unlike similar reviews, this SLR provides a rigorous methodology to review current research from a computer science perspective. Therefore, our goal is four-fold: (i) Identify the main topics in the field of building; (ii) Identify the recent data-driven methods; (iii) Understand the BMS's underlying computing architecture (iv) Understand the features of BMS that contribute to the smartization of buildings. The result synthesizes our findings and provides research directions for further research.

Smart campus: Data on energy generation costs from distributed generation systems of electrical energy in a Nigerian University.

Project description:This data article presents comparisons of energy generation costs from gas-fired turbine and diesel-powered systems of distributed generation type of electrical energy in Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria, a smart university campus driven by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Cumulative monthly data of the energy generation costs, for consumption in the institution, from the two modes electric power, which was produced at locations closed to the community consuming the energy, were recorded for the period spanning January to December 2017. By these, energy generation costs from the turbine system proceed from the gas-firing whereas the generation cost data from the diesel-powered generator also include data on maintenance cost for this mode of electrical power generation. These energy generation cost data that were presented in tables and graphs employ descriptive probability distribution and goodness-of-fit tests of statistical significance as the methods for the data detailing and comparisons. Information details from this data of energy generation costs are useful for furthering research developments and aiding energy stakeholders and decision-makers in the formulation of policies on energy generation modes, economic valuation in terms of costing and management for attaining energy-efficient/smart educational environment.

Data-driven mathematical simulation analysis of emergency evacuation time in smart station's operations management.

Project description:This research establishes an emergency evacuation time model specifically designed for subway stations with complex structures. The model takes into account multiple factors, including passenger flow rate, subway facility parameters, and crowd density, to accurately assess evacuation times. It considers the impact of horizontal walking distance, flow rate, subway train size, and stair parameters on the overall evacuation process. By identifying bottleneck points such as gates, car doors, and stairs, the model facilitates the evaluation of evacuation capacity and the formulation of effective evacuation plans, particularly in multiline subway transfer stations. The good consistency is achieved between the calculated evacuation time and simulated results using the Pathfinder software (with the relative error of 5.4%). To address urban traffic congestion and enhance subway station safety, the study recommends implemented measures for emergency diversion and passenger flow control. Additionally, the research presents characteristic mathematical models for various evacuation routes by considering the structural and temporal characteristics of metro systems. These models provide valuable guidance for conducting large-scale passenger evacuation simulations in complex environments. Future research can further enhance the model by incorporating psychological factors, evacuation signage, and strategies for vulnerable populations. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of evacuation dynamics and provides practical insights to improve safety and efficiency in subway systems.

Data-driven energy landscape reveals critical genes in cancer progression.

Project description:The evolution of cancer is a complex process characterized by stable states and transitions among them. Studying the dynamic evolution of cancer and revealing the mechanisms of cancer progression based on experimental data is an important topic. In this study, we aim to employ a data-driven energy landscape approach to analyze the dynamic evolution of cancer. We take Kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) as an example. From the energy landscape, we introduce two quantitative indicators (transition probability and barrier height) to study critical shifts in KIRC cancer evolution, including cancer onset and progression, and identify critical genes involved in these transitions. Our results successfully identify crucial genes that either promote or inhibit these transition processes in KIRC. We also conduct a comprehensive biological function analysis on these genes, validating the accuracy and reliability of our predictions. This work has implications for discovering new biomarkers, drug targets, and cancer treatment strategies in KIRC.

Objective, Quantitative, Data-Driven Assessment of Chemical Probes.

Project description:Chemical probes are essential tools for understanding biological systems and for target validation, yet selecting probes for biomedical research is rarely based on objective assessment of all potential compounds. Here, we describe the Probe Miner: Chemical Probes Objective Assessment resource, capitalizing on the plethora of public medicinal chemistry data to empower quantitative, objective, data-driven evaluation of chemical probes. We assess >1.8 million compounds for their suitability as chemical tools against 2,220 human targets and dissect the biases and limitations encountered. Probe Miner represents a valuable resource to aid the identification of potential chemical probes, particularly when used alongside expert curation.
