An iron ketimide single-molecule magnet [Fe₄(N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh₂)₆] with suppressed through-barrier relaxation.

ABSTRACT: Reaction of FeBr₂ with 1.5 equiv. of LiN[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh₂ and 2 equiv. of Zn, in THF, results in the formation of the tetrametallic iron ketimide cluster [Fe₄(N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh₂)₆] (1) in moderate yield. Formally, two Fe centers in 1 are Fe(i) and two are Fe(ii); however, Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry suggests that the [Fe₄]⁶⁺ core of 1 exhibits complete valence electron delocalization, with a thermally-persistent spin ground state of S = 7. AC and DC SQUID magnetometry reveals the presence of slow magnetic relaxation in 1, indicative of single-molecule magnetic (SMM) behaviour with a relaxation barrier of U _eff = 29 cm^-1. Remarkably, very little quantum tunnelling or Raman relaxation is observed down to 1.8 K, which leads to an open hysteresis loop and long relaxation times (up to 34 s at 1.8 K and zero field and 440 s at 1.67 kOe). These results suggest that transition metal ketimide clusters represent a promising avenue to create long-lifetime single molecule magnets.

Project description:In a natural environment, Fe(ii) adsorbed onto the surfaces of natural particles to form various surface complex species can influence the transformation of contaminants. The reductive reactivity of the [[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(iii)]/[[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(ii)] couples are close correlated with the surrounding conditions. In this study, we investigated the effects of Si(iv) on the reductive reactivity of [[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(iii)]/[[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(ii)] couples adsorbed onto γ-Al2O3. Experiments were conducted under different conditions to investigate the effects of Si(iv) on the reactivity of [[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(iii)]/[[triple bond, length as m-dash]Fe(ii)] couples for 2-nitrophenol (2-NP, selected as the model pollutant) reduction in γ-Al2O3 suspensions. Kinetics results revealed that chemical adsorption is the rate limiting step in Fe(ii) and Si(iv) adsorption processes and the reduction of 2-NP is an endothermic reaction. The linear correlations between the reduced peak oxidation potential (E p) (versus SCE) and 2-NP reduction rate (ln k), and between the adsorbed Fe(ii) density (ρ Fe(II)) and ln k, illustrated that E p and ρ Fe(II) are two key factors in the inhibiting effects of Si(iv) on the reductive reactivity of Fe(iii)/Fe(ii) couples on γ-Al2O3. The results of Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that the increase of Si(iv) concentration resulted in the gradual change in the composition of the adsorbed Fe species from pure [triple bond, length as m-dash]AlOFe+ (γ-Al2O3 surface-bound Fe(ii) species with higher reductive reactivity) to a mixture of [triple bond, length as m-dash]AlOFe+ and [triple bond, length as m-dash]SiOFe+ (SiO2 surface-bound Fe(ii) species with lower reductive reactivity), leading to the decrease in ρ Fe(II), the positive shift in E p, the increase in activation energy (E a), and consequently the decrease in the reduction rate (ln k) of 2-NP.

Project description:We report a dysprosium(iii) bis(methanediide) single molecule magnet (SMM) where stabilisation of the highly magnetic states and suppression of mixing of opposite magnetic projections is imposed by a linear arrangement of negatively-charged donor atoms supported by weak neutral donors. Treatment of [Ln(BIPMTMS)(BIPMTMSH)] [Ln = Dy, 1Dy; Y, 1Y; BIPMTMS = {C(PPh2NSiMe3)2}2-; BIPMTMSH = {HC(PPh2NSiMe3)2}-] with benzyl potassium/18-crown-6 ether (18C6) in THF afforded [Ln(BIPMTMS)2][K(18C6)(THF)2] [Ln = Dy, 2Dy; Y, 2Y]. AC magnetic measurements of 2Dy in zero DC field show temperature- and frequency-dependent SMM behaviour. Orbach relaxation dominates at high temperature, but at lower temperatures a second-order Raman process dominates. Complex 2Dy exhibits two thermally activated energy barriers (U eff) of 721 and 813 K, the largest U eff values for any monometallic dysprosium(iii) complex. Dilution experiments confirm the molecular origin of this phenomenon. Complex 2Dy has rich magnetic dynamics; field-cooled (FC)/zero-field cooled (ZFC) susceptibility measurements show a clear divergence at 16 K, meaning the magnetic observables are out-of-equilibrium below this temperature, however the maximum in ZFC, which conventionally defines the blocking temperature, T B, is found at 10 K. Magnetic hysteresis is also observed in 10% 2Dy@2Y at these temperatures. Ab initio calculations suggest the lowest three Kramers doublets of the ground 6H15/2 multiplet of 2Dy are essentially pure, well-isolated |±15/2, |±13/2 and |±11/2 states quantised along the C[double bond, length as m-dash]Dy[double bond, length as m-dash]C axis. Thermal relaxation occurs via the 4th and 5th doublets, verified experimentally for the first time, and calculated U eff values of 742 and 810 K compare very well to experimental magnetism and luminescence data. This work validates a design strategy towards realising high-temperature SMMs and produces unusual spin relaxation behaviour where the magnetic observables are out-of-equilibrium some 6 K above the formal blocking temperature.
