Project description:With the rapid growth in the miniaturization and integration of modern electronics, the dissipation of heat that would otherwise degrade the device efficiency and lifetime is a continuing challenge. In this respect, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) are of significant attraction as fillers for high thermal conductivity nanocomposites due to their high thermal stability, electrical insulation, and relatively high coefficient of thermal conductivity. Herein, the ambient plasma treatment of BNNS (PBNNS) for various treatment times is described for use as a reinforcement in epoxy nanocomposites. The PBNNS-loaded epoxy nanocomposites are successfully manufactured in order to investigate the thermal conductivity and fracture toughness. The results indicate that the PBNNS/epoxy nanocomposites subjected to 7 min plasma treatment exhibit the highest thermal conductivity and fracture toughness, with enhancements of 44 and 110%, respectively, compared to the neat nanocomposites. With these enhancements, the increases in surface free energy and wettability of the PBNNS/epoxy nanocomposites are shown to be attributable to the enhanced interfacial adhesion between the filler and matrix. It is demonstrated that the ambient plasma treatments enable the development of highly dispersed conductive networks in the PBNNS epoxy system.

Project description:Dielectric materials with good thermal transport performance and desirable dielectric properties have significant potential to address the critical challenges of heat dissipation for microelectronic devices and power equipment under high electric field. This work reported the role of synergistic effect and interface on through-plane thermal conductivity and dielectric properties by intercalating the hybrid fillers of the alumina and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs) into epoxy resin. For instance, epoxy composite with hybrid fillers at a relatively low loading shows an increase of around 3 times in through-plane thermal conductivity and maintains a close dielectric breakdown strength compared to pure epoxy. Meanwhile, the epoxy composite shows extremely low dielectric loss of 0.0024 at room temperature and 0.022 at 100 ℃ and 10-1 Hz. And covalent bonding and hydrogen-bond interaction models were presented for analyzing the thermal conductivity and dielectric properties.

Project description:Amplification in toughness and balance with stiffness and strength are fundamental characteristics of biological structural composites, and a long sought-after objective for engineering design. Nature achieves these properties through a combination of multiscale key features. Yet, emulating all these features into synthetic de novo materials is rather challenging. Here, we fine-tune manual lamination, to implement a newly designed bone-inspired structure into fiber-reinforced composites. An integrated approach, combining numerical simulations, ad hoc manufacturing techniques, and testing, yields a novel composite with enhanced fracture toughness and balance with stiffness and strength, offering an optimal lightweight material solution with better performance than conventional materials such as metals and alloys. The results also show how the new design significantly boosts the fracture toughness compared to a classic laminated composite, made of the same building blocks, also offering an optimal tradeoff with stiffness and strength. The predominant mechanism, responsible for the enhancement of fracture toughness in the new material, is the continuous deviation of the crack from a straight path, promoting large energy dissipation and preventing a catastrophic failure. The new insights resulting from this study can guide the design of de novo fiber-reinforced composites toward better mechanical performance to reach the level of synergy of their natural counterparts.

Project description:The layered architecture of stiff biological materials often endows them with surprisingly high fracture toughness in spite of their brittle ceramic constituents. Understanding the link between organic-inorganic layered architectures and toughness could help to identify new ways to improve the toughness of biomimetic engineering composites. We study the cylindrically layered architecture found in the spicules of the marine sponge Euplectella aspergillum. We cut micrometer-size notches in the spicules and measure their initiation toughness and average crack growth resistance using flexural tests. We find that while the spicule's architecture provides toughness enhancements, these enhancements are relatively small compared to prototypically tough biological materials, like nacre. We investigate these modest toughness enhancements using computational fracture mechanics simulations.

Project description:The resistance to delamination in polymer composite depends on their constituents, manufacturing process, environmental factors, specimen geometry, and loading conditions. The manufacturing of laminated composites is usually carried out at an elevated temperature, which induces thermal stresses in composites mainly due to a mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of fiber and matrix. This work aims to investigate the effect of these process-induced stresses on mode-I interlaminar fracture toughness (GI) of Glass-Carbon-Epoxy (GCE) and Glass-Epoxy (GE) composites. These composites are prepared using a manual layup technique and cured under room temperature, followed by post-curing using different curing conditions. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used to determine GI experimentally. The slitting technique was used to estimate residual stresses (longitudinal and transverse direction of crack growth) inherited in cured composites and the impact of these stresses on GI was investigated. Delaminated surfaces of composites were examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the effect of post-curing on the mode-I failure mechanism. It was found that GI of both GE and GEC composites are sensitive to the state of residual stress in the laminas. The increase in the GI of laminates can also be attributed to an increase in matrix deformation and fiber-matrix interfacial bond with the increase in post-curing temperature.

Project description:Thermal transport properties of amorphous polymers depend significantly on the chain morphology, and boundary chain folding is a common phenomenon in bulk or lamellar polymer materials. In this work, by using molecular dynamics simulations, we study thermal conductivity of lamellar amorphous polyethylene (LAPE) with varying chain length (L 0). For a short L 0 without boundary chain folding, thermal conductivity of LAPE is homogeneous along the chain length direction. In contrast, boundary chain folding takes place for large L 0, and the local thermal conductivity at the boundary is notably lower than that of the central region, indicating inhomogeneous thermal transport in LAPE. By analysing the chain morphology, we reveal that the boundary chain folding causes the reduction of both the orientation order parameter along the heat flow direction and the radius of gyration, leading to the reduced local thermal conductivity at the boundary. Further vibrational spectrum analysis reveals that the boundary chain folding shifts the vibrational spectrum to the lower frequency, and suppresses the transmission coefficient for both C-C vibration and C-H vibration. Our study suggests that the boundary chain folding is an important factor for polymers to achieve desirable thermal conductivity for plastic heat exchangers and electronic packaging applications.

Project description:Black phosphorus has been revisited recently as a new two-dimensional material showing potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Here we report the anisotropic in-plane thermal conductivity of suspended few-layer black phosphorus measured by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The armchair and zigzag thermal conductivities are ∼20 and ∼40 W m(-1) K(-1) for black phosphorus films thicker than 15 nm, respectively, and decrease to ∼10 and ∼20 W m(-1) K(-1) as the film thickness is reduced, exhibiting significant anisotropy. The thermal conductivity anisotropic ratio is found to be ∼2 for thick black phosphorus films and drops to ∼1.5 for the thinnest 9.5-nm-thick film. Theoretical modelling reveals that the observed anisotropy is primarily related to the anisotropic phonon dispersion, whereas the intrinsic phonon scattering rates are found to be similar along the armchair and zigzag directions. Surface scattering in the black phosphorus films is shown to strongly suppress the contribution of long mean-free-path acoustic phonons.

Project description:A family of transparent polyisocyanurate-polyurethane (PUR-PIR) aerogels with an interesting combination of physical properties were synthesized. First, their textural properties were analyzed aiming to study catalyst influence on the final porous structures and densities. Their thermal conductivities were measured at different temperatures allowing observation of a clear trend relating the initial formulation with the porous structure and reaching values as low as 12 mW/mK, the lowest found in the literature for aerogels based on this polymer matrix. Contributions to thermal conductivity were calculated, improving the understanding of the porous structure-insulating performance relationship. Moreover, their mechanical properties were studied (elastic modulus, stress at different strains and elastic behavior). The aerogels showed tunable stiffness (elastic modulus from 6.32 to 0.13 MPa) by changing the catalyst concentration and significant elasticity. Thus, super-insulating transparent PUR-PIR aerogels with tailored mechanical properties were obtained opening a wide range of potential applications in the energy, building, automotive and aeronautical sectors, among others. The exceptional insulation of silica aerogels was reached at the same time that their general brittleness was improved while keeping good transparency to visible light (85%, 650 nm). Therefore, these aerogels may constitute an alternative to silica aerogels.

Composite functional characteristics-such as thermal and electrical conductivity, phase changes, dimensional stability, magnetization, and modulus increase-are tuned by selecting suitable nanoparticle filler material. The conductivity of composites can be related to the formation of conductive pathways as nanofiller materials form connections in the bulk of a composite matrix. With increasing use of nanomaterial containing composites and relatively little understanding of the toxicological effects thereof, adequate disposal and recyclability have become an increasing environmental concern.

Project description:A strategy was reported to prepare boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) by a molten hydroxide assisted liquid exfoliation from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powder. BNNSs with an average thickness of 3?nm were obtained by a facile, low-cost, and scalable exfoliation method. Highly thermally conductive polyimide (PI) composite films with BNNSs filler were prepared by solution-casting process. The in-plane thermal conductivity of PI composite films with 7?wt% BNNSs is up to 2.95?W/mK, which increased by 1,080% compared to the neat PI. In contrast, the out-of plane thermal conductivity of the composites is 0.44?W/mK, with an increase by only 76%. The high anisotropy of thermal conductivity was verified to be due to the high alignment of the BNNSs. The PI/BNNSs composite films are attractive for the thermal management applications in the field of next-generation electronic devices.
