Chemical Coupled PEDOT:PSS/Si Electrode: Suppressed Electrolyte Consumption Enables Long-Term Stability.

ABSTRACT: Huge volume changes of Si during lithiation/delithiation lead to regeneration of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and consume electrolyte. In this article, γ-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GOPS) was incorporated in Si/PEDOT:PSS electrodes to construct a flexible and conductive artificial SEI, effectively suppressing the consumption of electrolyte. The optimized electrode can maintain 1000 mAh g^-1 for nearly 800 cycles under limited electrolyte compared with 40 cycles of the electrodes without GOPS. Also, the optimized electrode exhibits excellent rate capability. The use of GOPS greatly improves the interface compatibility between Si and PEDOT:PSS. XPS Ar⁺ etching depth analysis proved that the addition of GOPS is conducive to forming a more stable SEI. A full battery assembled with NCM 523 cathode delivers a high energy density of 520 Wh kg^-1, offering good stability.

Project description:UnlabelledIn recent years, inorganic/organic hybrid solar cell concept has received growing attention for alternative energy solution because of the potential for facile and low-cost fabrication and high efficiency. Here, we report highly efficient hybrid solar cells based on silicon nanowires (SiNWs) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PedotPSS) using transfer-imprinted metal mesh front electrodes. Such a structure increases the optical absorption and shortens the carrier transport distance, thus, it greatly increases the charge carrier collection efficiency. Compared with hybrid cells formed using indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, we find an increase in power conversion efficiency from 5.95% to 13.2%, which is attributed to improvements in both the electrical and optical properties of the Au mesh electrode. Our fabrication strategy for metal mesh electrode is suitable for the large-scale fabrication of flexible transparent electrodes, paving the way towards low-cost, high-efficiency, flexible solar cells.

Water-Based Highly Stretchable PEDOT:PSS/Nonionic WPU Transparent Electrode.

Project description:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has the merits of high electrical conductivity and solution processability, and can be dispersed in water. To improve the stretchability of PEDOT:PSS-based transparent electrode films, the intrinsically conducting polymer PEDOT:PSS was blended with highly stretchable nonionic waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and coated on a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film. Nonionic WPU has good compatibility with PEDOT:PSS, without affecting the acidity. WPU undergoes hydrogen bonding and coulombic attractions with PEDOT:PSS. With variation of the WPU content, differences in the electrical properties, such as the sheet resistance and mechanical stretchability, of the coated thin films were observed. The film with 2.0 wt% WPU could be stretched to 400% of the electrode surface without damage to the surface of the electrode films. The WPU and TPU films both have a polyester group, which provides good adhesion between the WPU-based transparent electrodes and the TPU substrate films. A stretchable alternating current electroluminescence (ACEL) device was constructed by using the water-based PEDOT:PSS/nonionic WPU composite as both the bottom and top transparent electrodes. The fabricated ACEL remained its initial luminance in the 500% stretched state.

Enhancement of Thermoelectric Properties of PEDOT:PSS and Tellurium-PEDOT:PSS Hybrid Composites by Simple Chemical Treatment.

Project description:UnlabelledThe thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PedotPSS) and tellurium-PedotPSS (Te-PedotPSS) hybrid composites were enhanced via simple chemical treatment. The performance of thermoelectric materials is determined by their electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient. Significant enhancement of the electrical conductivity ofPedotPSS and Te-PedotPSS hybrid composites from 787.99 and 11.01 to 4839.92 and 334.68 S cm(-1), respectively was achieved by simple chemical treatment with H2SO4. The power factor of the developed materials could be effectively tuned over a very wide range depending on the concentration of the H2SO4 solution used in the chemical treatment. The power factors of the developed thermoelectric materials were optimized to 51.85 and 284 ?W m(-1) K(-2), respectively, which represent an increase of four orders of magnitude relative to the corresponding parameters of the untreated thermoelectric materials. Using the Te-PedotPSS hybrid composites, a flexible thermoelectric generator that could be embedded in textiles was fabricated by a printing process. This thermoelectric array generates a thermoelectric voltage of 2 mV using human body heat.

Ultrathin PEDOT:PSS Enables Colorful and Efficient Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Recently, metal halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (Pero-LEDs) have achieved significant improvement in device performance, especially for external quantum efficiency (EQE). And EQE is mostly determined by internal quantum efficiency of the emitting material, charge injection balancing factor (ηc), and light extraction efficiency (LEE) of the device. Herein, an ultrathin poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (UT-PEDOT:PSS) hole transporter layer is prepared by a water stripping method, and the UT-PEDOT:PSS can enhance ηc and LEE simultaneously in Pero-LEDs, mostly due to the improved carrier mobility, more matched energy level alignment, and reduced photon loss. More importantly, the performance enhancement from UT-PEDOT:PSS is quite universal and applicable in different kinds of Pero-LEDs. As a result, the EQEs of Pero-LEDs based on 3D, quasi-3D, and quasi-2D perovskites obtain enhancements of 42%, 87%, and 111%, and the corresponding maximum EQE reaches 17.6%, 15.0%, and 6.8%, respectively.

Improved PEDOT:PSS/c-Si hybrid solar cell using inverted structure and effective passivation.

Project description:The PEDOT:PSS is often used as the window layer in the normal structured PEDOT:PSS/c-Si hybrid solar cell (HSC), leading to significantly reduced response, especially in red and near-infrared region. By depositing the PEDOT:PSS on the rear side of the c-Si wafer, we developed an inverted structured HSC with much higher solar cell response in the red and near-infrared spectrum. Passivating the other side with hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) before electrode deposition, the minority carrier lifetime has been significantly increased and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the inverted HSC is improved to as high as 16.1% with an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 634?mV, fill factor (FF) of 70.5%, and short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 36.2?mA cm-2, an improvement of 33% over the control device. The improvements are ascribed to inverted configuration and a-Si:H passivation, which can increase photon carrier generation and reduce carrier recombination, respectively. Both of them will benefit the photovoltaic performance and should be considered as effective design strategies to improve the performance of organic/c-Si HSCs.

Junction formation and current transport mechanisms in hybrid n-Si/PEDOT:PSS solar cells.

Project description:We investigated hybrid inorganic-organic solar cells combining monocrystalline n-type silicon (n-Si) and a highly conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonate) (PedotPSS). The build-in potential, photo- and dark saturation current at this hybrid interface are monitored for varying n-Si doping concentrations. We corroborate that a high build-in potential forms at the hybrid junction leading to strong inversion of the n-Si surface. By extracting work function and valence band edge of the polymer from ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, a band diagram of the hybrid n-Si/PedotPSS heterojunction is presented. The current-voltage characteristics were analyzed using Schottky and abrupt pn-junction models. The magnitude as well as the dependence of dark saturation current on n-Si doping concentration proves that the transport is governed by diffusion of minority charge carriers in the n-Si and not by thermionic emission of majorities over a Schottky barrier. This leads to a comprehensive explanation of the high observed open-circuit voltages of up to 634 mV connected to high conversion efficiency of almost 14%, even for simple planar device structures without antireflection coating or optimized contacts. The presented work clearly shows thatPedotPSS forms a hybrid heterojunction with n-Si behaving similar to a conventional pn-junction and not, like commonly assumed, a Schottky junction.

Pure PEDOT:PSS hydrogels.

Project description:Hydrogels of conducting polymers, particularly poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), provide a promising electrical interface with biological tissues for sensing and stimulation, owing to their favorable electrical and mechanical properties. While existing methods mostly blend PEDOT:PSS with other compositions such as non-conductive polymers, the blending can compromise resultant hydrogels' mechanical and/or electrical properties. Here, we show that designing interconnected networks of PEDOT:PSS nanofibrils via a simple method can yield high-performance pure PEDOT:PSS hydrogels. The method involves mixing volatile additive dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) into aqueous PEDOT:PSS solutions followed by controlled dry-annealing and rehydration. The resultant hydrogels exhibit a set of properties highly desirable for bioelectronic applications, including high electrical conductivity (~20 S cm-1 in PBS, ~40 S cm-1 in deionized water), high stretchability (> 35% strain), low Young's modulus (~2 MPa), superior mechanical, electrical and electrochemical stability, and tunable isotropic/anisotropic swelling in wet physiological environments.

Realization of a PEDOT:PSS/Graphene Oxide On-Chip Pseudo-Reference Electrode for Integrated ISFETs.

Project description:A stable reference electrode (RE) plays a crucial role in the performance of an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) for bio/chemical sensing applications. There is a strong demand for the miniaturization of the RE for integrated sensor systems such as lab-on-a-chip (LoC) or point-of-care (PoC) applications. Out of several approaches presented so far to integrate an on-chip electrode, there exist critical limitations such as the effect of analyte composition on the electrode potential and drifts during the measurements. In this paper, we present a micro-scale solid-state pseudo-reference electrode (pRE) based on poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) coated with graphene oxide (GO) to deploy with an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET)-based sensor platform. The PEDOT:PSS was electropolymerized from its monomer on a micro size gold (Au) electrode and, subsequently, a thin GO layer was deposited on top. The stability of the electrical potential and the cross-sensitivity to the ionic strength of the electrolyte were investigated. The presented pRE exhibits a highly stable open circuit potential (OCP) for up to 10 h with a minimal drift of ~0.65 mV/h and low cross-sensitivity to the ionic strength of the electrolyte. pH measurements were performed using silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs), using the developed pRE to ensure good gating performance of electrolyte-gated FETs. The impact of ionic strength was investigated by measuring the transfer characteristic of a SiNW-FET in two electrolytes with different ionic strengths (1 mM and 100 mM) but the same pH. The performance of the PEDOT:PSS/GO electrode is similar to a commercial electrochemical Ag/AgCl reference electrode.

Plasticizer and catalyst co-functionalized PEDOT:PSS enables stretchable electrochemical sensing of living cells.

Project description:Recently, stretchable electrochemical sensors have stood out as a powerful tool for the detection of soft cells and tissues, since they could perfectly comply with the deformation of living organisms and synchronously monitor mechanically evoked biomolecule release. However, existing strategies for the fabrication of stretchable electrochemical sensors still face with huge challenges due to scarce electrode materials, demanding processing techniques and great complexity in further functionalization. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy for one-step preparation of stretchable electrochemical biosensors by doping ionic liquid and catalyst into a conductive polymer (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate), PEDOT:PSS). Bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide lithium salt as a small-molecule plasticizer can significantly improve the stretchability and conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS film, and cobalt phthalocyanine as an electrocatalyst endows the film with excellent electrochemical sensing performance. Moreover, the functionalized PEDOT:PSS retained good cell biocompatibility with two extra dopants. These satisfactory properties allowed the real-time monitoring of stretch-induced transient hydrogen peroxide release from cells. This work presents a versatile strategy to fabricate conductive polymer-based stretchable electrodes with easy processing and excellent performance, which benefits the in-depth exploration of sophisticated life activities by electrochemical sensing.

Highly Efficient ITO-Free Quantum-Dot Light Emitting Diodes via Solution-Processed PEDOT:PSS Semitransparent Electrode.

Project description:We present a study on the potential use of sulfuric acid-treated poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as a viable alternative to indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). ITO, despite its high conductivity and transparency, is known for its disadvantages of being brittle, fragile, and expensive. Furthermore, due to the high hole injection barrier of quantum dots, the need for electrodes with a higher work function is becoming more significant. In this report, we present solution-processed, sulfuric acid-treated PEDOT:PSS electrodes for highly efficient QLEDs. The high work function of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes improved the performance of the QLEDs by facilitating hole injection. We demonstrated the recrystallization and conductivity enhancement of PEDOT:PSS upon sulfuric acid treatment using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Hall measurement. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) analysis of QLEDs showed that sulfuric acid-treated PEDOT:PSS exhibited a higher work function than ITO. The maximum current efficiency and external quantum efficiency based on the PEDOT:PSS electrode QLEDs were measured as 46.53 cd/A and 11.01%, which were three times greater than ITO electrode QLEDs. These findings suggest that PEDOT:PSS can serve as a promising replacement for ITO electrodes in the development of ITO-free QLED devices.
