The PGNAA system for the cement measurement was simulated based on Monte Carlo method. The sizes of the moderator and reflector for the 14 MeV DT neutron generator were optimized for fast and thermal neutron outputs. The DT neutron generator was simulated at the pulse mode, and the gamma-ray detector was set as LaBr3(Ce) scintillator. Project description:Vertical tanks are commonly used appliances for liquids, and its capacity is very important for quantitative liquid ratio and liquid trade. In order to measure the capacity of vertical tanks more conveniently, this paper proposes a vertical tank capacity measurement method based on Monte Carlo Method. The method arranges a plurality of sensor points on the inner surface of the tank, and then performs Monte Carlo tests by generating a large number of random sample points, and finally calculates the capacity by counting the sample points that meet the criterion. The criterion for whether a sample point is located in the tank, which is the core issue, is established with the coordinates of sensor points and the distance between different sensor points along the surface of the tank. The results show that the absolute error of the measurement results of the proposed method does not exceed ±0.0003[m3], and the absolute error of capacity per unit volume has a linear relationship with the height of the vertical tank, and has little effect with the radial size of the vertical tank.

Project description:BackgroundMonte Carlo simulation is considered as the most accurate method for dose calculation in radiotherapy. PRIMO is a Monte-Carlo program with a user-friendly graphical interface.Material and methodA VitalBeam with 6MV and 6MV flattening filter free (FFF), equipped with the 120 Millennium multileaf collimator was simulated by PRIMO. We adjusted initial energy, energy full width at half maximum (FWHM), focal spot FWHM, and beam divergence to match the measurements. The water tank and ion-chamber were used in the measurement. Percentage depth dose (PDD) and off axis ratio (OAR) were evaluated with gamma passing rates (GPRs) implemented in PRIMO. PDDs were matched at different widths of standard square fields. OARs were matched at five depths. Transmission factor and dose leaf gap (DLG) were simulated. DLG was measured by electronic portal imaging device using a sweeping gap method.ResultFor the criterion of 2%/2 mm, 1%/2 mm and 1%/1 mm, the GPRs of 6MV PDD were 99.33-100%, 99-100%, and 99-100%, respectively; the GPRs of 6MV FFF PDD were 99.33-100%, 98.99-99.66%, and 97.64-98.99%, respectively; the GPRs of 6MV OAR were 96.4-100%, 90.99-100%, and 85.12-98.62%, respectively; the GPRs of 6MV FFF OAR were 95.15-100%, 89.32-100%, and 87.02-99.74%, respectively. The calculated DLG matched well with the measurement (6MV: 1.36 mm vs. 1.41 mm; 6MV FFF: 1.07 mm vs. 1.03 mm, simulation vs measurement). The transmission factors were similar (6MV: 1.25% vs. 1.32%; 6MV FFF: 0.8% vs. 1.12%, simulation vs measurement).ConclusionThe calculated PDD, OAR, DLG and transmission factor were all in good agreement with measurements. PRIMO is an independent (with respect to analytical dose calculation algorithm) and accurate Monte Carlo tool.

Project description:Molecular simulations based on classical force fields are computationally efficient but lack accuracy due to the empirical formulation of non-bonded interactions. Quantum mechanical (QM) methods, albeit accurate, have inhibitory computational costs for large molecules and clusters. Hence, to overcome the bottleneck, machine learning (ML)-based methods have been employed in the recent years. We had earlier reported a combined scheme of many-body expansion (MBE) and ML to predict the interaction energies of rigid water clusters. In this work, we proceed toward building a flexible water model using the ML-MBE scheme. This ML-MBE scheme has an error of <1% for interaction energy prediction in comparison to the parent QM method for flexible water decamers. Machine learning-based Monte Carlo simulations (MLMC) are performed with this water model, and the structural properties of these configurations are compared with those obtained from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and the TIP3P classical force field. The radial distribution functions, tetrahedral order parameters, and number of hydrogen bonds in AIMD and MLMC have a similar qualitative and quantitative trend, whereas the classical force fields show a significant deviation.

Project description:Two new statistical models based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) have been developed to score peptide matches in shotgun proteomic data and incorporated in a database search program, MassMatrix (www.massmatrix.net). The first model evaluates peptide matches based on the total abundance of matched peaks in the experimental spectra. The second model evaluates amino acid residue tags within MS/MS spectra. The two models provide complementary scores for peptide matches that result in higher confidence in peptide identification when significant scores are returned from both models. The MCS-based models use a variance reduction technique that improves estimation precision. Due to the high computational expense of MCS-based models, peptide matches were prefiltered by other statistical models before further evaluation by the MCS-based models. Receiver operating characteristic analysis of the data sets confirmed that MCS-based models improved the overall performance of the MassMatrix search software, especially for low-mass accuracy data sets.

Project description:In particle radiotherapy, range uncertainty is an important issue that needs to be overcome. Because high-dose conformality can be achieved using a particle beam, a small uncertainty can affect tumor control or cause normal-tissue complications. From this perspective, the treatment planning system (TPS) must be accurate. However, there is a well-known inaccuracy regarding dose computation in heterogeneous media. This means that verifying the uncertainty level is one of the prerequisites for TPS commissioning. We evaluated the range accuracy of the dose computation algorithm implemented in a commercial TPS, and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation against measurement using a CT calibration phantom. A treatment plan was produced for eight different materials plugged into a phantom, and two-dimensional doses were measured using a chamber array. The measurement setup and beam delivery were simulated by MC code. For an infinite solid water phantom, the gamma passing rate between the measurement and TPS was 97.7%, and that between the measurement and MC was 96.5%. However, gamma passing rates between the measurement and TPS were 49.4% for the lung and 67.8% for bone, and between the measurement and MC were 85.6% for the lung and 100.0% for bone tissue. For adipose, breast, brain, liver, and bone mineral, the gamma passing rates computed by TPS were 91.7%, 90.6%, 81.7%, 85.6%, and 85.6%, respectively. The gamma passing rates for MC for adipose, breast, brain, liver, and bone mineral were 100.0%, 97.2%, 95.0%, 98.9%, and 97.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the described procedure successfully evaluated the allowable range uncertainty for TPS commissioning. The TPS dose calculation is inefficient in heterogeneous media with large differences in density, such as lung or bone tissue. Therefore, the limitations of TPS in heterogeneous media should be understood and applied in clinical practice.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Although Monte Carlo simulations of light propagation in full segmented three-dimensional MRI based anatomical models of the human head have been reported in many articles. To our knowledge, there is no patient-oriented simulation for individualized calibration with NIRS measurement. Thus, we offer an approach for brain modeling based on image segmentation process with in vivo MRI T1 three-dimensional image to investigate the individualized calibration for NIRS measurement with Monte Carlo simulation. METHODS: In this study, an individualized brain is modeled based on in vivo MRI 3D image as five layers structure. The behavior of photon migration was studied for this individualized brain detections based on three-dimensional time-resolved Monte Carlo algorithm. During the Monte Carlo iteration, all photon paths were traced with various source-detector separations for characterization of brain structure to provide helpful information for individualized design of NIRS system. RESULTS: Our results indicate that the patient-oriented simulation can provide significant characteristics on the optimal choice of source-detector separation within 3.3 cm of individualized design in this case. Significant distortions were observed around the cerebral cortex folding. The spatial sensitivity profile penetrated deeper to the brain in the case of expanded CSF. This finding suggests that the optical method may provide not only functional signal from brain activation but also structural information of brain atrophy with the expanded CSF layer. The proposed modeling method also provides multi-wavelength for NIRS simulation to approach the practical NIRS measurement. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the three-dimensional time-resolved brain modeling method approaches the realistic human brain that provides useful information for NIRS systematic design and calibration for individualized case with prior MRI data.

Project description:Blood pressure measurements are one of the most routinely performed medical tests globally. Blood pressure is an important metric since it provides information that can be used to diagnose several vascular diseases. Conventional blood pressure measurement systems use cuff-based devices to measure the blood pressure, which may be uncomfortable and sometimes burdensome to the subjects. Therefore, in this study, we propose a cuffless blood pressure estimation model based on Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). We propose a heterogeneous finger model for the MCS at wavelengths of 905 nm and 940 nm. After recording the photon intensities from the MCS over a certain range of blood pressure values, the actual photoplethysmography (PPG) signals were used to estimate blood pressure. We used both publicly available and self-made datasets to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. In case of the publicly available dataset for transmission-type MCS, the mean absolute errors are 3.32 ± 6.03 mmHg for systolic blood pressure (SBP), 2.02 ± 2.64 mmHg for diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and 1.76 ± 2.8 mmHg for mean arterial pressure (MAP). The self-made dataset is used for both transmission- and reflection-type MCSs; its mean absolute errors are 2.54 ± 4.24 mmHg for SBP, 1.49 ± 2.82 mmHg for DBP, and 1.51 ± 2.41 mmHg for MAP in the transmission-type case as well as 3.35 ± 5.06 mmHg for SBP, 2.07 ± 2.83 mmHg for DBP, and 2.12 ± 2.83 mmHg for MAP in the reflection-type case. The estimated results of the SBP and DBP satisfy the requirements of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards and are within Grade A according to the British Hypertension Society (BHS) standards. These results show that the proposed model is efficient for estimating blood pressures using fingertip PPG signals.

Project description:In this study, we present a validated Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation model of the Dingo thermal neutron imaging beamline at the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering. The model, constructed using CAD drawings of the entire beam transport path and shielding structures, is designed to precisely predict the in-beam neutron field at the position at the sample irradiation stage. The model's performance was assessed by comparing simulation results to various experimental measurements, including planar thermal neutron distribution obtained in-beam using gold foil activation and [Formula: see text]B[Formula: see text]C-coated microdosimeters and the out-of-beam neutron spectra measured with Bonner spheres. The simulation results demonstrated that the predicted neutron fluence at the field's centre is within 8.1% and 2.1% of the gold foil and [Formula: see text]B[Formula: see text]C-coated microdosimeter measurements, respectively. The logarithms of the ratios of average simulated to experimental fluences in the thermal (E[Formula: see text] 0.414 eV), epithermal (0.414 eV < E[Formula: see text] 11.7 keV) and fast (E[Formula: see text] 11.7 keV) spectral regions were approximately - 0.03 to + 0.1, - 0.2 to + 0.15, and - 0.4 to + 0.2, respectively. Furthermore, the predicted thermal, epithermal and fast neutron components in-beam at the sample stage position constituted approximately 18%, 64% and 18% of the total neutron fluence.

Project description:Conventional mammography can suffer from poor contrast between healthy and cancerous tissues due to the small difference in attenuation properties. Coherent scatter slot scan imaging is an imaging technique which provides additional information and is compatible with conventional mammography. A Monte Carlo simulation of coherent scatter slot scan imaging was performed to assess its performance and provide system optimization. Coherent scatter could be exploited using a system similar to conventional slot scan mammography system with antiscatter grids tilted at the characteristic angle of cancerous tissues. System optimization was performed across several parameters, including source voltage, tilt angle, grid distances, grid ratio, and shielding geometry. The simulated carcinomas were detectable for tumors as small as 5 mm in diameter, so coherent scatter analysis using a wide-slot setup could be promising as an enhancement for screening mammography. Employing coherent scatter information simultaneously with conventional mammography could yield a conventional high spatial resolution image with additional coherent scatter information.

Project description:Monte Carlo method was used to study the characteristics of neutron interactions with cells underneath a water medium layer with varying thickness. The following results were obtained. (1) The fractions of neutron interaction with 1H, 12C, 14N and 16O nuclei in the cell layer were studied. The fraction with 1H increased with increasing medium thickness, while decreased for 12C, 14N and 16O nuclei. The bulges in the interaction fractions with 12C, 14N and 16O nuclei were explained by the resonance spikes in the interaction cross-section data. The interaction fraction decreased in the order: 1H > 16O > 12C > 14N. (2) In general, as the medium thickness increased, the number of "interacting neutrons" which exited the medium and then further interacted with the cell layer increased. (3) The area under the angular distributions for "interacting neutrons" decreased with increasing incident neutron energy. Such results would be useful for deciphering the reasons behind discrepancies among existing results in the literature.
