Flow field around bubbles on formation of air embolism in small vessels.

ABSTRACT: An air embolism is induced by intravascular bubbles that block the blood flow in vessels, which causes a high risk of pulmonary hypertension and myocardial and cerebral infarction. However, it is still unclear how a moving bubble is stopped in the blood flow to form an air embolism in small vessels. In this work, microfluidic experiments, in vivo and in vitro, are performed in small vessels, where bubbles are seen to deform and stop gradually in the flow. A clot is always found to originate at the tail of a moving bubble, which is attributed to the special flow field around the bubble. As the clot grows, it breaks the lubrication film between the bubble and the channel wall; thus, the friction force is increased to stop the bubble. This study illustrates the stopping process of elongated bubbles in small vessels and brings insight into the formation of air embolism.

Air bubbles around the heart: a rare case report of pneumohydropericardium in heart transplantation.

Project description:BackgroundPneumohydropericardium is a rare but significant condition characterized by the presence of both air and fluid in the pericardial space. It is often associated with trauma, invasive procedures, or thoracic pathologies, and its occurrence following heart transplantation is particularly unusual. Early recognition is essential to prevent complications such as cardiac tamponade, although conservative management can be effective in cases without haemodynamic compromise.Case summaryWe present the case of a 40-year-old woman with a history of hypokinetic-dilative cardiomyopathy and heterozygous for TNNT2 gene mutation (c.547C>T p.Arg183Trp), who underwent orthotopic heart transplantation. Following the procedure, she developed pneumohydropericardium, identified by echocardiography as air microbubbles and fluid in the pericardial space, without associated haemodynamic instability. The condition was monitored with serial echocardiograms, and no invasive intervention was required. The air microbubbles resolved after 16 days of echocardiographic follow-up, and the patient was discharged in stable condition. At follow-up, she showed no recurrence of the pneumohydropericardium.DiscussionThis case highlights pneumohydropericardium as a rare post-transplant complication that, when detected early and closely monitored, can be managed conservatively without severe outcomes. While pneumohydropericardium has been previously reported in association with other conditions, its post-transplant manifestation is rare and warrants further awareness. Echocardiographic surveillance played a key role in guiding management, as invasive procedures were avoided, and the patient remained haemodynamically stable throughout. This case underscores the importance of recognizing and managing pneumohydropericardium in heart transplant patients to ensure optimal outcomes.

Visualization of air flow around soccer ball using a particle image velocimetry.

Project description:A traditional soccer ball is constructed using 32 pentagonal and hexagonal panels. In recent years, however, the likes of the Teamgeist and Jabulani balls, constructed from 14 and 8 panels, respectively, have entered the field, marking a significant departure from conventionality in terms of shape and design. Moreover, the recently introduced Brazuca ball features a new 6-panel design and has already been adopted by many soccer leagues. However, the shapes of the constituent panels of these balls differ substantially from those of conventional balls. Therefore, this study set out to investigate the flight and aerodynamic characteristics of different orientations of the soccer ball, which is constructed from panels of different shapes. A wind tunnel test showed substantial differences in the aerodynamic forces acting on the ball, depending on its orientation. Substantial differences were also observed in the aerodynamic forces acting on the ball in different directions, corresponding to its orientation and rotation. Moreover, two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (2D-PIV) measurements showed that the boundary separation varies depending on the orientation of the ball. Based on these results, we can conclude that the shape of the panels of a soccer ball substantially affects its flight trajectory.

Evidence for Air-Seeding: Watching the Formation of Embolism in Conifer Xylem.

Project description:Water transport in plants is based on a metastable system as the xylem "works" at negative water potentials (ψ). At critically low ψ, water columns can break and cause embolism. According to the air-seeding hypothesis, this occurs by air entry via the pits. We studied the formation of embolism in dehydrating xylem sections of Juniperus virginiana (Cupressaceae), which were monitored microscopically and via ultrasonic emission analyses. After replacement of water by air in outer tracheid layers, a complex movement of air-water menisci into tracheids was found. With decreasing ψ, pits started to aspirate and the speed of menisci movements increased. In one experiment, an airseeding event could be detected at a pit. The onset of ultrasonic activity was observed when pits started to close, and ultrasonic emission ceased at intense dehydration. Experiments clearly indicated that predictions of the air-seeding hypothesis are correct: At low ψ, pit mechanisms to prevent air entry failed and air spread into tracheids. ψ fluctuations caused complex movements of air-water menisci and pits, and at low ψ, air-seeding caused ultrasonic emissions. Deformation of Red Blood Cells, Air Bubbles, and Droplets in Microfluidic Devices: Flow Visualizations and Measurements.

Project description:Techniques, such as micropipette aspiration and optical tweezers, are widely used to measure cell mechanical properties, but are generally labor-intensive and time-consuming, typically involving a difficult process of manipulation. In the past two decades, a large number of microfluidic devices have been developed due to the advantages they offer over other techniques, including transparency for direct optical access, lower cost, reduced space and labor, precise control, and easy manipulation of a small volume of blood samples. This review presents recent advances in the development of microfluidic devices to evaluate the mechanical response of individual red blood cells (RBCs) and microbubbles flowing in constriction microchannels. Visualizations and measurements of the deformation of RBCs flowing through hyperbolic, smooth, and sudden-contraction microchannels were evaluated and compared. In particular, we show the potential of using hyperbolic-shaped microchannels to precisely control and assess small changes in RBC deformability in both physiological and pathological situations. Moreover, deformations of air microbubbles and droplets flowing through a microfluidic constriction were also compared with RBCs deformability.

Blood flow reprograms lymphatic vessels to blood vessels.

Project description:Human vascular malformations cause disease as a result of changes in blood flow and vascular hemodynamic forces. Although the genetic mutations that underlie the formation of many human vascular malformations are known, the extent to which abnormal blood flow can subsequently influence the vascular genetic program and natural history is not. Loss of the SH2 domain-containing leukocyte protein of 76 kDa (SLP76) resulted in a vascular malformation that directed blood flow through mesenteric lymphatic vessels after birth in mice. Mesenteric vessels in the position of the congenital lymphatic in mature Slp76-null mice lacked lymphatic identity and expressed a marker of blood vessel identity. Genetic lineage tracing demonstrated that this change in vessel identity was the result of lymphatic endothelial cell reprogramming rather than replacement by blood endothelial cells. Exposure of lymphatic vessels to blood in the absence of significant flow did not alter vessel identity in vivo, but lymphatic endothelial cells exposed to similar levels of shear stress ex vivo rapidly lost expression of PROX1, a lymphatic fate-specifying transcription factor. These findings reveal that blood flow can convert lymphatic vessels to blood vessels, demonstrating that hemodynamic forces may reprogram endothelial and vessel identity in cardiovascular diseases associated with abnormal flow.

Lymph Flow Induces the Postnatal Formation of Mature and Functional Meningeal Lymphatic Vessels.

Project description:Recently, the presence of lymphatics has been demonstrated and characterized in the dura mater, which is in contrast to the well-accepted view indicating the lack of a classical lymphatic drainage system of the central nervous system (CNS). Moreover, the role of meningeal lymphatics in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis was suggested. However, the possible regulators of the developmental program and function of meningeal lymphatics remain unclear. Here, we aimed at characterizing the lymph flow dependence of the developmental program and function of the meningeal lymphatics. First, we demonstrated that lymphatics present in the dura mater are involved in the uptake and transport of macromolecules from the CNS. Meningeal lymphatics develop during the postnatal period which process involves the maturation of the vessels. The formation of mature meningeal lymphatics coincides with the increase of the drainage of macromolecules from the CNS to the deep cervical lymph nodes. Importantly, the structural remodeling and maturation of meningeal lymphatics is impaired in Plcγ2 -/- mice with reduced lymph flow. Furthermore, macromolecule uptake and transport by the meningeal lymphatics are also affected in Plcγ2 -/- mice. Collectively, lymph flow-induced mechanical forces are required for the postnatal formation of mature and functional meningeal lymphatic vessels. Defining lymph flow-dependence of the development and function of meningeal lymphatics may lead to better understanding of the pathogenesis of neurological diseases including Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

Air-Stable Aerophobic Polydimethylsiloxane Tube with Efficient Self-Removal of Air Bubbles.

Project description:The adherence of underwater air bubbles to surfaces is a serious cause of malfunction in applications such as microfluidics, transport, and space devices. However, realizing spontaneous and additional unpowered transport of underwater air bubbles inside tubes remains challenging. Although superhydrophilic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tubes are attracting attention as air bubble repellents, superhydrophilic PDMS, which is fabricated via oxygen plasma treatment, has a disadvantage in that it is weak against aging. Here, we present a tube with the ability to self-remove air bubbles, which overcomes the drawback of rapid aging. PDMS containing Silwet L-77 with a hierarchical nano-microstructure exhibiting subaqueous aerophobicity was fabricated. We conducted adherence and saturation experiments of air bubbles using the fabricated PDMS tube with Silwet L-77 to investigate the mechanism of bubbles adhering to and separating from the fabricated tube surface. The developed PDMS with Silwet L-77 exhibits a strong self-removal effect with an air bubble removal of 97.7%. The adherence and saturation experiments suggest that the transparent superhydrophilic-underwater aerophobic PDMS is a potentially exceptional tool for spontaneously separating air bubbles attached to tube surfaces.

In vivo pressure gradient heterogeneity increases flow contribution of small diameter vessels in grapevine.

Project description:Leaves lose approximately 400 H2O molecules for every 1 CO2 gained during photosynthesis. Most long-distance water transport in plants, or xylem sap flow, serves to replace this water to prevent desiccation. Theory predicts that the largest vessels contribute disproportionately to overall sap flow because flow in pipe-like systems scales with the fourth power of radius. Here, we confront these theoretical flow predictions for a vessel network reconstructed from X-ray μCT imagery with in vivo flow MRI observations from the same sample of a first-year grapevine stem. Theoretical flow rate predictions based on vessel diameters are not supported. The heterogeneity of the vessel network gives rise to transverse pressure gradients that redirect flow from wide to narrow vessels, reducing the contribution of wide vessels to sap flow by 15% of the total. Our results call for an update of the current working model of the xylem to account for its heterogeneity.

Melting of glacier ice enhanced by bursting air bubbles.

Project description:Feedbacks between ice melt, glacier flow and ocean circulation can rapidly accelerate ice loss at tidewater glaciers and alter projections of sea-level rise. At the core of these projections is a model for ice melt that neglects the fact that glacier ice contains pressurized bubbles of air due to its formation from compressed snow. Current model estimates can underpredict glacier melt at termini outside the region influenced by the subglacial discharge plume by a factor of 10-100 compared with observations. Here we use laboratory-scale experiments and theoretical arguments to show that the bursting of pressurized bubbles from glacier ice could be a source of this discrepancy. These bubbles eject air into the seawater, delivering additional buoyancy and impulses of turbulent kinetic energy to the boundary layer, accelerating ice melt. We show that real glacier ice melts 2.25 times faster than clear bubble-free ice when driven by natural convection in a laboratory setting. We extend these results to the geophysical scale to show how bubble dynamics contribute to ice melt from tidewater glaciers. Consequently, these results could increase the accuracy of modelled predictions of ice loss to better constrain sea-level rise projections globally.

Circumventing surface tension: tadpoles suck bubbles to breathe air.

Project description:The surface tension of water provides a thin, elastic membrane upon which many tiny animals are adapted to live and move. We show that it may be equally important to the minute animals living beneath it by examining air-breathing mechanics in five species (three families) of anuran (frog) tadpoles. Air-breathing is essential for survival and development in most tadpoles, yet we found that all tadpoles at small body sizes were unable to break through the water's surface to access air. Nevertheless, by 3 days post-hatch and only 3 mm body length, all began to breathe air and fill the lungs. High-speed macrovideography revealed that surface tension was circumvented by a novel behaviour we call 'bubble-sucking': mouth attachment to the water's undersurface, the surface drawn into the mouth by suction, a bubble 'pinched off' within the mouth, then compressed and forced into the lungs. Growing tadpoles transitioned to air-breathing via typical surface breaching. Salamander larvae and pulmonate snails were also discovered to 'bubble-suck', and two insects used other means of circumvention, suggesting that surface tension may have a broader impact on animal phenotypes than hitherto appreciated.
