Project description:BackgroundTobacco smoking poses public health concerns because of its high risk for many chronic diseases. Most smokers begin using tobacco in their teens and recent reports indicate that smoking prevalence is climbing among youth. The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a worldwide, school-based, tobacco-specific survey, but cross-cultural differences limit its effectiveness in international studies. Specifically, the GYTS assesses not only the prevalence of smoking, but also tobacco-related attitudes, school curricula, and advertisements, which are culturally influenced. Therefore, we conducted this study to develop a Chinese version of the GYTS for both national surveillance and international comparison.MethodsThe original English GYTS was translated and back translated using a cross-cultural adaptation process. The comprehensiveness and feasibility of using the Chinese-version GYTS were reviewed by a panel of 6 tobacco-control experts. The understandability and cultural relevance of the Chinese-version GYTS were discussed in a focus group of 5 schoolteachers and 8 students. The expert and focus group feedback was incorporated into a final Chinese version of the GYTS, which was administered to 382 students throughout Taiwan by multi-stage sampling from 10 randomly selected schools.ResultsThe internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) for the GYTS subscales (smoking susceptibility, attitude toward smoking, and media messages about smoking) ranged from 0.70 to 0.94. The internal logical agreement of responses ranged from 85.3 to 99.2%.ConclusionThe Chinese version of the GYTS has good reliability and validity and can serve as the foundation for international comparison and tobacco control in Chinese-speaking communities.

Project description:Aim:The purpose of this study was to produce a modified Greek translation of the CS and to test this version in terms of reliability and validity. Materials and methods:Translation of the modified Constant score testing protocol was done according to established international guidelines. Sixty-three patients with shoulder pain caused by degenerative or inflammatory disorders completed the Greek version of CS along with the Greek versions of SF-12 and Quick Dash Scores and the ASES Rating Scale and were included into the validation process. To assess test-retest reliability, 58 individuals completed the subjective part of the test again after 24-36 hours, while abstaining from all forms of treatment; internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha (?); reliability was assessed with test-retest procedure and the use of Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), whereas the validity of the reference questionnaire was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient in relation to control questionnaires. Results:There were no major problems during the forward-backward translation of the CS into Greek. The internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha 0.92) while the test-retest reliability for the overall questionnaire was also high (intra-class coefficient 0.95). Construct validity was confirmed with high values of Pearson's correlation between CS and Q-DASH (0.84), SF-12 (0.80) and ASES score (0.86) in respect. Conclusion:A translation and cultural adaptation of CS into Greek was successfully contacted. The Greek version of the modified Constant Score can be a useful modality in the evaluation of shoulder disorders among Greek patients and doctors.

Project description:BackgroundObtaining accurate and valid measurements of disruptive behavior disorders remains a challenge in non-Western settings due to variability in societal norms for child behavior and a lack of tools developed outside of Western contexts. This paper assesses the reliability and construct validity of the Disruptive Behavior International Scale - Nepal version (DBIS-N)-a scale developed using ethnographic research in Nepal-and compares it with a widely used Western-derived scale in assessing locally defined child behavior problems.MethodsWe assessed a population-based sample of 268 children ages 5-15 years old in Nepal for behavior problems with a pool of candidate items developed from ethnographic research. We selected final items for the DBIS-N using exploratory factor analysis in a randomly selected half of the sample and then evaluated the model fit using confirmatory factor analysis in the remaining half. We compared the classification accuracy and incremental validity of the DBIS-N and Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) using local defined behavior problems as criteria. Local criteria were assessed via parent report using: 1) local behavior problem terms, and 2) a locally developed vignette-based assessment.ResultsTen items were selected for the final scale. The DBIS-N had good internal consistency (Cronbach's α: 0.84) and excellent test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation 0.93, r = .93). Classification accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) were similar and high for both the ECBI (AUC: 0.83 and 0.85) and DBIS-N (AUC: 0.83 and 0.85) on both local criteria. The DBIS-N added predictive value above the ECBI in logistic regression models, supporting its incremental validity.ConclusionsWhile both the DBIS-N and the ECBI had high classification accuracy for local idioms for behavior problems, the DBIS-N had a more coherent factor structure and added predictive value above the ECBI. Items from the DBIS-N were more consistent with cultural themes identified in qualitative research, whereas multiple items in the ECBI that did not fit with these themes performed poorly in factor analysis. In conjunction with practical considerations such as price and scale length, our results lend support for the utility of the DBIS-N for the assessment of locally prioritized behavior problems in Nepal.

Project description:BackgroundPostpartum maternal functioning has the potential to affect the quality of interaction between mother and child. A proper assessment of maternal functioning requires a comprehensive and accurate tool. The objective of this study was to prepare a Persian version of the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF) and evaluate its psychometric properties in order to determine its applicability in Iranian mothers.MethodsThe BIMF was translated into Persian and then culturally adapted for Iranian women. After evaluating face and content validity, to perform factor analysis, a cross-sectional study was conducted using the Persian version of BIMF. The data was collected from two unique groups of 250 mothers (in all 500 mothers) who had infants 2 to 12-months old and who were selected using a two-stage cluster sampling method. Factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), composite reliability (CR) and Cronbach's alpha were employed in order to evaluate structural validity and reliability.ResultsExploratory factor analysis resulted in a five-factor structure consisting of 20 items. Subsequently, confirmatory factor analysis (X 2/ df = 1.61, RMSEA = 0.050, GFI = 0.91, CFI = 0.91) confirmed that the Persian version had satisfactory goodness of fit. Reliability and internal consistency were confirmed with a CR of 0.77, an ICC of 0.87 and a Cronbach's alpha of 0.81.ConclusionsThe findings indicated that the Persian version of the BIMF is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing maternal functioning among Iranian mothers.

Project description:BackgroundThe Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center - Questionnaire on Health Problems (OSTRC-QHP) has been shown to be a valid and reliable questionnaire for monitoring athletes with acute, overuse, and illness problems.ObjectivesTo translate and cross-culturally adapt the OSTRC-QHP into Brazilian-Portuguese (OSTRC-BR), and investigate the measurement properties of this version.MethodsThe original (Norwegian) questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted following existing guidelines. Measurement properties of the OSTRC-BR were investigated in 134 athletes followed for 13 weeks. Reliability was analyzed via internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Responsiveness was assessed by effect size (ES) estimations, correlation of the OSTRC-BR severity score with the Global Perceived Effect scale (GPE) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and by the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve test based on the area under the curve (AUC).ResultsThe OSTRC-QHP has been translated and cross-culturally adapted successfully. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.92, 0.94). Intrarater reliability (ICC2,1) of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.94, 0.98) was classified as excellent. ES estimation showed large effects (1.14 to 1.39). OSTRC-BR correlation was moderate (0.58 to 0.72) with the GPE and substantial (0.84 to 0.89) with the NPRS. The AUC values were above 0.70 when analysing all types of health problems.ConclusionsThe OSTRC-BR presented adequate measurement properties. The OSTRC-BR is a valid, reliable, responsive, and, therefore, an adequate tool for monitoring Brazilian athletes from different sports during training and competitions.

Project description:BackgroundThe International Personality Disorders Examination (IPDE) constitutes the proposal of the WHO for the reliable diagnosis of personality disorders (PD). The IPDE assesses pathological personality and is compatible both with DSM-IV and ICD-10 diagnosis. However it is important to test the reliability and cultural applicability of different IPDE translations.MethodsThirty-one patients (12 male and 19 female) aged 35.25 +/- 11.08 years, took part in the study. Three examiners applied the interview (23 interviews of two and 8 interviews of 3 examiners, that is 47 pairs of interviews and 70 single interviews). The phi coefficient was used to test categorical diagnosis agreement and the Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient to test agreement concerning the number of criteria met.ResultsTranslation and back-translation did not reveal specific problems. Results suggested that reliability of the Greek translation is good. However, socio-cultural factors (family coherence, work environment etc) could affect the application of some of the IPDE items in Greece. The diagnosis of any PD was highly reliable with phi >0.92. However, diagnosis of non-specific PD was not reliable at all (phi close to 0) suggesting that this is a true residual category. Diagnosis of specific PDs were highly reliable with the exception of schizoid PD. Diagnosis of antisocial and Borderline PDs were perfectly reliable with phi equal to 1.00.ConclusionsThe Greek translation of the IPDE is a reliable instrument for the assessment of personality disorder but cultural variation may limit its applicability in international comparisons.

Project description:Study designA questionnaire validity study.ObjectivesTo perform the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and analysis of the measurement properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Spinal Cord Injury Pain Instrument (SCIPI) for the screening of neuropathic pain in spinal cord injury.SettingNeurorehabilitation hospital in north-eastern Brazil.MethodsWe performed the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the SCIPI. The pre-final version was applied in 10 patients with spinal cord injury sequelae and pain report. The final version of the SCIPI was applied to 100 patients. The measurement properties evaluated were structural validity, test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, and diagnostic accuracy.ResultsNone of the items in the pre-final version of the SCIPI had any comprehension problems. The one-dimensional structure of the final version of the SCIPI was adequate. There were significant correlations between the SCIPI and the Douleur Neuropathique 4 (rho = 0.546), as well as adequate test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.89, kappa ≥ 0.79), internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ≥ 0.76), and diagnostic accuracy (area under the curve = 0.860).ConclusionThe Brazilian version of the SCIPI presents measurement properties that are suitable for measuring neuropathic pain related to spinal cord injury.

Project description:BackgroundThe Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) score is a clinical instrument for the assessment of consciousness which is gradually gaining ground in clinical practice, as it incorporates more complete neurological information than the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). The main objectives of the current study were the following: (1) translate and cross-culturally adapt the FOUR score into Greek; (2) evaluate its clinimetric properties, including interrater reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity; and (3) evaluate the reliability of assessments among health care professionals with different levels of experience and training.MethodsThe FOUR score was initially translated into Greek. Next, patients with neurosurgical pathologies in need of consciousness monitoring were independently assessed with the GCS and FOUR score within one hour by four raters who had different levels of experience and training (two board-certified neurosurgeons, a neurosurgery resident, and a registered nurse). Interrater reliability, internal consistency, and construct validity were evaluated for the scales using weighted Cohen's κ (κw) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), Cronbach's α and Spearman's ρ values, respectively.ResultsA total of 408 assessments were performed for 99 patients. The interrater reliability was excellent for both the FOUR score (ICC = 0.941) and GCS (ICC = 0.936). The values of κw exceeded 0.90 for all pairs, suggesting that the FOUR score can be reliably applied by raters with varying experience. Among the scales' components, FOUR score's brainstem and respiratory items showed the lowest, yet high enough (κw > 0.60), level of agreement. The interrater reliability remained excellent (κw > 0.85, ICC > 0.90) for all diagnosis and age groups, with a trend toward higher FOUR score values in the most severe cases (ICC = 0.813 vs. 0.723). Both the FOUR score and GCS showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's α > 0.70 for all occasions). The FOUR score correlated strongly with GCS (Spearman's ρ > 0.90 for all raters), suggesting high construct validity.ConclusionsThe Greek version of the FOUR score is a valid and reliable tool for the clinical assessment of patients with disorders of consciousness. It can be applied successfully by nurses, residents, and specialized physicians. Therefore, its use by medical practitioners with different levels of experience and training is strongly encouraged.

Project description:BackgroundA psychometrically robust measurement instrument is prerequisite to tailor and monitor interventions aiming to improve evidence-based practice (EBP). The recently developed "Evidence-based Practice Inventory" (EBPI) questionnaire (five dimensions) provides a sound inventory for a comprehensive assessment of adherence to EBP, and identification of barriers and facilitators for EBP. The aims of this study were to establish a German language version of the EBPI and to examine the instrument's reliability in a diverse sample of healthcare professionals.MethodsThe English version of the EBPI was translated, adopted and subsequently test-retest reliability of the German language EBPI was examined in a nationwide online survey. Participants working in Germany were invited to complete the questionnaire twice. For each EBPI dimension, internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and the relative test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC) were calculated. The standard error of measurement, limits of agreement and minimal detectable change values were estimated to quantify measurement error.ResultsA German language version of the EBPI was established. In the online survey, the EBPI was initially completed by 889 healthcare professionals. At follow-up, 344 individuals (39%) completed the questionnaire (74% female; mean work experience: 13.6 years). The ICCs for the five dimensions varied between 0.78 and 0.86. The standard error of measurement varied between 6.5 and 8.8% of the respective dimension scale range, and the limits of agreement between 24 and 37%. For internal consistency reliability, alpha varied between 0.64 and 0.90. There were neither floor nor ceiling effects, nor any other relevant feasibility issues.ConclusionsThe German language EBPI can be used to assess EBP adherence of healthcare professionals in clinical practice, and to identify barriers and facilitators for an EBP conform behaviour. Results on test-retest reliability indicate that the EBPI produces reliable scores when used for group comparisons, but the questionnaire seems insufficiently reliable for individual measurements over time. Methods of item response theory or Rasch measurement theory should be used for further evaluation and revision of the EBPI, informed by the results of this study.Trial registrationGerman Clinical Trials Register ( DRKS00013792 ). Project description:PurposeTo investigate potential reasons for the mismatch between laboratory/clinic-based sentence-in-noise performance and real-world listening abilities, we recently developed a corpus of natural, spontaneously spoken speech with three vocal effort levels (Everyday Conversational Sentences in Noise [ECO-SiN]). Here, we examined the feasibility of using the ECO-SiN corpus for adaptive speech-in-noise testing, which might be a desirable format in certain situations (e.g., during a clinical visit).MethodTen young, normal-hearing adults, along with 20 older adults with hearing loss participated in the study. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were obtained using ECO-SiN sentences, which were systematically compared to the SRTs obtained using traditional Bamford-Kowal-Bench-like sentences.ResultsResults demonstrated the properties of the test compared favorably with those of a standard test based on scripted and clearly spoken sentences. Moreover, whereas normal-hearing listeners received a benefit from an increase in vocal effort, the participants with hearing loss showed a disbenefit that increased with increasing hearing loss.ConclusionThe adaptive version of the ECO-SiN test is feasible for research and clinical testing.Supplemental materialhttps://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25146338.
