Infiltration of red blood cells into atheromatous plaques and oxidation of hemoglobin (Hb) and lipoproteins are implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. α<sub>1</sub>-microglobulin (A1M) is a radical-scavenging and heme-binding protein.
