Transparent origami glass.

ABSTRACT: The art of origami has emerged as an engineering tool with ever increasing potential, but the technique is typically limited to soft and deformable materials. Glass is indispensable in many applications, but its processing options are limited by its brittle nature and the requirement to achieve optical transparency. We report a strategy that allows making three dimensional transparent glass with origami techniques. Our process starts from a dynamic covalent polymer matrix with homogeneously dispersed silica nanoparticles. Particle cavitation and dynamic bond exchange offer two complementary plasticity mechanisms that allow the nanocomposite to be permanently folded into designable geometries. Further pyrolysis and sintering convert it into transparent three dimensional glass. Our method expands the scope of glass shaping and potentially opens up its utilities in unexplored territories.

Chemical and mechanical interfacial degradation in bifacial glass/glass and glass/transparent backsheet photovoltaic modules

Project description:Abstract Glass/glass (G/G) photovoltaic modules are quickly rising in popularity, but the durability of modern G/G packaging has not yet been established. In this work, we examine the interfacial degradation modes in G/G and glass/transparent backsheet modules under damp heat (DH) with and without system bias voltage, comparing emerging polyolefin elastomer (POE) and industry‐standard poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA) encapsulants. We investigate the transport of ionic species at cell/encapsulant interfaces, demonstrating that POE limits both sodium and silver ion migration compared with EVA. Changes to the chemical structures of the encapsulants at the cell/encapsulant interfaces demonstrate that both POE and EVA are more susceptible to degradation in modules with a transparent backsheet than in the G/G configuration. Adhesion testing reveals that POE and EVA have comparable critical debond energies after the DH exposures regardless of system bias polarity. The results of this study indicate that the interfacial degradation mechanisms of G/G appear to be similar to those of conventional glass/backsheet modules. For emerging materials, our results demonstrate that POE offers advantages over EVA but that transparent backsheets may accelerate encapsulant degradation due to increased moisture ingress when compared with the G/G structure. G/G modules with POE were found to be more durable than those with EVA or transparent backsheet. The high resistivity POE inhibits sodium migration through the interfaces under negative and silver migration under positive bias, decreasing risk of PIDs and transmittance loss as compared to EVA. Interfacial adhesion strength reduced for both EVA and POE encapsulants resulting in similar risks of delamination under the damp heat conditions.

Pressureless Crystallization of Glass for Transparent Nanoceramics.

Project description:Transparent nanoceramics embedded with highly dense crystalline domains are promising for applications in missile guidance, infrared night vision, and laser and nuclear radiation detection. Unfortunately, current nanoceramics are strictly constrained by the stringent construction procedures such as super-high pressure and containerless processing. Here, a pressureless crystallization engineering strategy in glass for elaboration of transparent nanoceramics and fibers is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By intentional creation of a sharp contrast between nucleation and growth rates, the crystal growth rate during glass crystallization can be significantly suppressed. Importantly, this unique phase-transition habit enables the achievement of transparent nanoceramics and even smooth fibers with extremely tiny crystalline size (≈20 nm) and high crystallinity (≈97%) under atmospheric pressure. This allows the generation of an attractive nonlinear optical response such as dynamic optical filtering and luminescence in the mid-infrared waveband of 4300-4950 nm. These findings highlight that the strategy to switch the phase-transition habit of glass into the unconventional crystallization regime may provide new opportunities for the creation of next-generation nanoceramics and fibers.

Low-temperature 3D printing of transparent silica glass microstructures.

Project description:Transparent silica glass is one of the most essential materials used in society and industry, owing to its exceptional optical, thermal, and chemical properties. However, glass is extremely difficult to shape, especially into complex and miniaturized structures. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have allowed for the creation of glass structures, but these methods involve time-consuming and high-temperature processes. Here, we report a photochemistry-based strategy for making glass structures of micrometer size under mild conditions. Our technique uses a photocurable polydimethylsiloxane resin that is 3D printed into complex structures and converted to silica glass via deep ultraviolet (DUV) irradiation in an ozone environment. The unique DUV-ozone conversion process for silica microstructures is low temperature (~220°C) and fast (<5 hours). The printed silica glass is highly transparent with smooth surface, comparable to commercial fused silica glass. This work enables the creation of arbitrary structures in silica glass through photochemistry and opens opportunities in unexplored territories for glass processing techniques.

Transparent Glass Surfaces with Silica Nanopillars for Radiative Cooling.

Project description:The increasing global use of cooling systems and the need of reducing greenhouse effect are pushing the emergence of more efficient cooling methods. In particular, passive radiative cooling technology extracts heat from objects by tailoring their optical emissivity using surface micro- and nanostructuring. Being capable of increasing thermal emissivity is especially relevant for widespread glass structures and devices, e.g., displays, car and building windows, and solar cells. In this paper, we propose a scalable lithography-free nanostructuring method to increase the infrared (IR) emissivity of glass by reducing the high reflection associated with the SiO2 Reststrahlen band around 9 μm wavelength. Furthermore, we show that with an additional thin polymer coating the scattering (haze) in the visible due to the deep nanostructures can be dramatically reduced while maintaining the large IR emissivity. We experimentally prove that our nanostructured surface can extract more heat via radiation emission than the bare glass substrate, while keeping full transparency.

Melt-Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing of Transparent Fused Silica Glass.

Project description:In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) of glass has attracted great interest in academia and industry, yet it is still mostly limited to liquid nanocomposite-based approaches for stereolithography, two-photon polymerization, or direct ink writing. Melt-extrusion-based processes, such as fused deposition modeling (FDM), which will allow facile manufacturing of large thin-walled components or simple multimaterial printing processes, are so far inaccessible for AM of transparent fused silica glass. Here, melt-extrusion-based AM of transparent fused silica is introduced by FDM and fused feedstock deposition (FFD) using thermoplastic silica nanocomposites that are converted to transparent glass using debinding and sintering. This will enable printing of previously inaccessible glass structures like high-aspect-ratio (>480) vessels with wall thicknesses down to 250 µm, delicate parts including overhanging features using polymer support structures, as well as dual extrusion for multicolored glasses.

Pressureless glass crystallization of transparent yttrium aluminum garnet-based nanoceramics.

Project description:Transparent crystalline yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG; Y3Al5O12) is a dominant host material used in phosphors, scintillators, and solid state lasers. However, YAG single crystals and transparent ceramics face several technological limitations including complex, time-consuming, and costly synthetic approaches. Here we report facile elaboration of transparent YAG-based ceramics by pressureless nano-crystallization of Y2O3-Al2O3 bulk glasses. The resulting ceramics present a nanostructuration composed of YAG nanocrystals (77 wt%) separated by small Al2O3 crystalline domains (23 wt%). The hardness of these YAG-Al2O3 nanoceramics is 10% higher than that of YAG single crystals. When doped by Ce3+, the YAG-Al2O3 ceramics show a 87.5% quantum efficiency. The combination of these mechanical and optical properties, coupled with their simple, economical, and innovative preparation method, could drive the development of technologically relevant materials with potential applications in wide optical fields such as scintillators, lenses, gem stones, and phosphor converters in high-power white-light LED and laser diode.

Transparent Electrothermal Heaters Based on Vertically-Oriented Graphene Glass Hybrid Materials.

Project description:Transparent heating devices are widely used in daily life-related applications that can be achieved by various heating materials with suitable resistances. Herein, high-performance vertically-oriented graphene (VG) films are directly grown on soda-lime glass by a radio-frequency (rf) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method, giving reasonable resistances for electrothermal heating. The optical and electrical properties of VG films are found to be tunable by optimizing the growth parameters such as growth time, carrier gas flow, etc. The electrothermal performances of the derived materials with different resistances are thus studied systematically. Specifically, the VG film on glass with a transmittance of ~73% at 550 nm and a sheet resistance of ~3.9 KΩ/□ is fabricated into a heating device, presenting a saturated temperature up to 55 °C by applying 80 V for 3 min. The VG film on the glass at a transmittance of ~43% and a sheet resistance of 0.76 KΩ/□ exhibits a highly steady temperature increase up to ~108 °C with a maximum heating rate of ~2.6 °C/s under a voltage of 60 V. Briefly, the tunable sheet resistance, good adhesion of VG to the growth substrate, relative high heating efficiency, and large heating temperature range make VG films on glass decent candidates for electrothermal related applications in defrosting and defogging devices.

Large-Area Film Thickness Identification of Transparent Glass by Hyperspectral Imaging.

Project description:This study introduces a novel method for detecting and measuring transparent glass sheets using hyperspectral imaging (HSI). The main goal of this study is to create a conversion technique that can accurately display spectral information from collected images, particularly in the visible light spectrum (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) areas. This technique enables the capture of relevant spectral data when used with images provided by industrial cameras. The next step in this investigation is using principal component analysis to examine the obtained hyperspectral images derived from different treated glass samples. This analytical procedure standardizes the magnitude of light wavelengths that are inherent in the HSI images. The simulated spectral profiles are obtained using the generalized inverse matrix technique on the normalized HSI images. These profiles are then matched with spectroscopic data obtained from microscopic imaging, resulting in the observation of distinct dispersion patterns. The novel use of images coloring methods effectively displays the thickness of the glass processing sheet in a visually noticeable way. Based on empirical research, changes in the thickness of the glass coating in the NIR-HSI range cause significant changes in the transmission of infrared light at different wavelengths within the NIR spectrum. This phenomenon serves as the foundation for the study of film thickness. The root mean square error inside the NIR area is impressively low, calculated to be just 0.02. This highlights the high level of accuracy achieved by the technique stated above. Potential areas of investigation that arise from this study are incorporating the proposed approach into the design of a real-time, wide-scale automated optical inspection system.

Replicating biological 3D root and hyphal networks in transparent glass chips.

Project description:Replicating the complex 3D microvascular architectures found in biological systems is a critical challenge in tissue engineering and other fields requiring efficient mass transport. Conventional microfabrication techniques often face limitations in creating extensive hierarchical networks, especially within bulk materials. Here, we report a versatile bioinspired approach to generate optimized 3D microvascular networks within transparent glass matrix by transcribing the natural growth patterns of plants and fungi. Plant seeds or fungal spores are first cultivated on nanoparticle-based culture media. Subsequent heat treatment removes the biological species while sintering the surrounding compound into a solidified chip with replica root/hyphal architectures as open microchannels. A diverse range of architectures, including the hierarchical branching of plant roots and the intricate networks formed by fungal hyphae, can be faithfully replicated. The resultant glass microvascular networks exhibit high chemical and thermal stability, enabling applications under harsh conditions. Fluid flow experiments validate the functionalities of the fabricated channels. By co-cultivating plants and fungi, hierarchical multi-scale architectures mimicking natural vascular systems are achieved. This bioinspired manufacturing technique leverages autonomous biological growth for architectural optimization, offering a complementary approach to existing microfabrication methods. The transparent nature of the glass chips allows for direct optical inspection, potentially facilitating integration with imaging components. This versatile platform holds promise for various engineering applications, such as microreactors, heat exchangers, and advanced filtration systems.

In situ and tunable structuring of semiconductor-in-glass transparent composite.

Project description:Semiconductor-in-glass composites are an exciting class of photonic materials for various fundamental applications. The significant challenge is the scalable elaboration of composite with the desirable combination of tunable structure, high semiconductor loading ratio, and excellent transparency. Here we report that the topological engineering strategy via hybridization of the glass network former enables to surmount the aforementioned challenge. It not only facilitates the in situ precipitation of (Ga2-xAlx)O3 domains with continuously tunable composition but also allows to simultaneously refine the grain size and enhance the crystallinity. In addition, the composites exhibit excellent transparency and can host various active dopants. We demonstrate the attractive broadband optical response of the composite and achieve the pulse laser operation in mid-infrared waveband. The findings are expected to provide a fundamental principle of in situ modification in hybrid system for generation of high-performance semiconductor-in-glass composites.
