Background

Caenis rivulorum Eaton, 1884 is widely distributed and has been reported from a wide range in the Palearctic Region.

New information

We report this species from Japan for the first time, from five localities of Hokkaido, based on morphology and molecular data.

Project description:The finding of three immature nymphs of Prosopistoma Latreille, 1833 (Ephemeroptera, Prosopistomatidae) in an upstream site of Baishih River represents the first record of this rarely collected genus in Taiwan. These nymphs were discovered through extensive monthly sampling at the riffle habitats from 13 undisturbed sites over two years (Dec 2008-Nov 2010). The coloration pattern of the collected immature nymphs in Taiwan is similar to the immature stage of Prosopistomaocellatum and Prosopistomaannamense, two species which have been found in similarly undisturbed, upland forested-stream habitats.

First record of <i>Paegniodes</i> Eaton, 1881 (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae) from Thailand with description of a new species.

Project description:A new species of Heptageniidae, Paegniodes sapanensis sp. nov., is described based on larvae, subimagos, eggs, and COI data. The mayfly genus Paegniodes Eaton, 1881 is reported for the first time from Thailand. The larva of the new species can be distinguished from other known Paegniodes species by i) lamellae of gill I ca 1/4 of fibrilliform portion and ii) mandibles and basal segment of maxillary palp without dense setae on margin. The subimago characters useful to distinguish this new species from previously known species are i) the median stripes on abdominal terga and ii) shape of the female subgenital and subanal plates. The genetic distance between the new species and P. cupulatus (Eaton, 1871) was approximately 11%. The morphological characters of the new species are discussed and compared to other known species.

First record of the genus Gratia Thomas (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) from China with the description of a new species.

Project description:A new species of Baetidae, Gratiabaibungensis sp. n., is described and illustrated based on nymphal stage collected from the southeastern Tibet (Xizang) and the genus is reported for the first time from China. This new species can be readily differentiated from its congeners by the absence of a protuberance on the posterior margin of the abdominal tergum X, glabrate simple submarginal setae on the labrum, and the posterior margin of sterna VI-IX having much longer spatulate setae.

A new species and first record of the genus <i>Procerobaetis</i> Kaltenbach & Gattolliat, 2020 (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) from Thailand.

Project description:The genus Procerobaetis Kaltenbach & Gattolliat, 2020 is reported for the first time from Thailand, and Procerobaetis totuspinosus sp. nov. is described as a new species based on larvae. It can be easily distinguished from other known Procerobaetis species by the presence of triangular spines at the posterior margin of tergites VI-IX. COI sequences were obtained from all known species. The genetic distances (Kimura 2-parameter) between the new species and the other species are between 20% and 23%. The morphological characters of the new species and its closely related species are discussed; larval key to all species of the genus Procerobaetis is also provided.

First record of <i>Stigmatomyces</i> (Ascomycota: Laboulbeniales) on Drosophilidae from Japan.

Project description:Three Stigmatomyces species were detected on five drosophilid species from Japan. We report Stigmatomyces majewskii on Drosophila rufa and Drosophila suzukii, Stigmatomyces scaptodrosophilae on Scaptodrosophila coracina and Scaptodrosophila subtilis, and Stigmatomyces sacaptomyzae on Scaptomyza graminum. Except for Scaptomyza graminum, each of these species is a newly identified Stigmatomyces host. Our discovery that D. suzukii is a host of S. majewskii may provide new pest management approaches for this global agricultural pest insect.

First fossil record of the mayfly family Vietnamellidae (Insecta, Ephemeroptera) from Burmese Amber confirms its Oriental origin and gives new insights into its evolution.

Project description:The small, monophyletic mayfly family Vietnamellidae Allen, 1984 has so far only been known from a few extant species of the genus Vietnamella Tshernova, 1972, which are all distributed in the Oriental Realm (Vietnam, Thailand, China, and India). Herein we report the first fossil record of Vietnamellidae based on a male and female imago from Mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. We establish the new genus Burmella gen. nov. to accommodate these two new Mesozoic specimens. Their attribution to Vietnamellidae is supported by the rounded shape of the hind wings with arched outer margin, the course of thoracic sutures, and characteristics of venation, especially of MP and Cu of the forewings and associated intercalary veins of the cubital field. At the same time, Burmella gen. nov. clearly differs from Vietnamella by a diminished number of longitudinal and cross veins in the hind wings, and by the different shape of male genitalia. This first fossil record of Vietnamellidae supports an age of at least 100 Ma for this taxon.

First record of the family Ameronothridae (Acari: Oribatida) from Japan - new species, juvenile morphology, ecology and biogeographic remarks.

Project description:The Ameronothridae are recorded for the first time from Japanese coasts with the new species Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. from Hokkaido. The report of this species represents the most southern occurrence of an Ameronothrus species in the Asian Pacific region. Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. can be easily distinguished from its congeners by the conspicuously pusticulate body surface and the loss of dorsal companion setae d on all genua in the adult stage. Based on adult and juvenile morphology, a close relation to Ameronothrus maculatus and A. schneideri is suggested. Ameronothrus yoichi sp. n. is classified as a lichenivorous inhabitant of sediment-free rocky coastal substrates. Due to a lack of genetic sequence data of nearly all ameronothrid species a molecular genetic comparison is yet unfeasible, but a Bayesian inference tree based on the 18S rRNA gene shows a paraphyletic clustering of the ameronothrid A. yoichi sp. n. and Paraquanothrus grahami. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:5B772E2C-7D5E-4C86-9955-AB84A84C50DA.
