Polarization and Phase Textures in Lattice Plasmon Condensates.

ABSTRACT: Polarization textures of light may reflect fundamental phenomena, such as topological defects, and can be utilized in engineering light beams. They have been observed, for instance, in photonic crystal lasers and semiconductor polariton condensates. Here we demonstrate domain wall polarization textures in a plasmonic lattice Bose-Einstein condensate. A key ingredient of the textures is found to be a condensate phase that varies spatially in a nontrivial manner. The phase of the Bose-Einstein condensate is reconstructed from the real- and Fourier-space images using a phase retrieval algorithm. We introduce a simple theoretical model that captures the results and can be used for design of the polarization patterns and demonstrate that the textures can be optically switched. The results open new prospects for fundamental studies of non-equilibrium condensation and sources of polarization-structured beams.

Spin-momentum coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with lattice band pseudospins.

Project description:The quantum emulation of spin-momentum coupling, a crucial ingredient for the emergence of topological phases, is currently drawing considerable interest. In previous quantum gas experiments, typically two atomic hyperfine states were chosen as pseudospins. Here, we report the observation of a spin-momentum coupling achieved by loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into periodically driven optical lattices. The s and p bands of a static lattice, which act as pseudospins, are coupled through an additional moving lattice that induces a momentum-dependent coupling between the two pseudospins, resulting in s-p hybrid Floquet-Bloch bands. We investigate the band structures by measuring the quasimomentum of the Bose-Einstein condensate for different velocities and strengths of the moving lattice, and compare our measurements to theoretical predictions. The realization of spin-momentum coupling with lattice bands as pseudospins paves the way for engineering novel quantum matter using hybrid orbital bands.

Self-organized phase-transition lithography for all-inorganic photonic textures.

Project description:Realizing general processing applicable to various materials by one basic tool has long been considered a distant dream. Fortunately, ultrafast laser-matter interaction has emerged as a highly universal platform with unprecedented optical phenomena and provided implementation paths for advanced manufacturing with novel functionalities. Here, we report the establishment of a three-dimensional (3D) focal-area interference field actively induced by a single ultrafast laser in transparent dielectrics. Relying on this, we demonstrate a radically new approach of self-organized phase-transition lithography (SOPTL) to achieve super-resolution construction of embedded all-inorganic photonic textures with extremely high efficiency. The generated textures exhibit a tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) in a wide range from ~1.3 to ~2 μm. More complicated interlaced textures with adjustable structural features can be fabricated within a few seconds, which is not attainable with any other conventional techniques. Evidence suggests that the SOPTL is extendable to more than one material system. This study augments light-matter interaction physics, offers a promising approach for constructing robust photonic devices, and opens up a new research direction in advanced lithography.

MORC3 Forms Nuclear Condensates through Phase Separation.

Project description:Phase separation can produce local structures with specific functionality in the cell, and in the nucleus, this can lead to chromatin reorganization. Microrchidia 3 (MORC3) is a human ATPase that has been implicated in autoimmune disorders and cancer. Here, we show that MORC3 forms phase-separated condensates with liquid-like properties in the cell nucleus. Fluorescence live-cell imaging reveals that the MORC3 condensates are heterogeneous and undergo dynamic morphological changes during the cell cycle. The ATPase activity of MORC3 drives its phase separation in vitro and requires DNA binding and releasing the MORC3 CW domain-dependent autoinhibition through association with histone H3. Our findings suggest a mechanism by which the ATPase function of MORC3 mediates MORC3 nuclear compartmentalization.

Polarization-dependent multipolar plasmon resonances in anisotropic multiscale au particles.

Project description:This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of three-dimensional (3D) multiscale Au particles with different aspect ratios. Increasing the length of the particles resulted in excitation of a longitudinal mode and two different transverse modes having different multipolar orders. The multipolar orders increased for both longitudinal and transverse modes as the aspect ratio increased. Finite-difference time-domain calculations revealed that the structural asymmetry of the 3D anisotropic particles were the reason for the two distinct transverse plasmon resonances. When the 3D structural change occurred at the ends of the multiscale particle, however, the optical response showed two resonances in the longitudinal direction and only a single resonance in the transverse direction.

Plasmon-Assisted Direction- and Polarization-Sensitive Organic Thin-Film Detector.

Project description:Utilizing Bragg surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on metal nanostructures for the use in optical devices has been intensively investigated in recent years. Here, we demonstrate the integration of nanostructured metal electrodes into an ITO-free thin film bulk heterojunction organic solar cell, by direct fabrication on a nanoimprinted substrate. The nanostructured device shows interesting optical and electrical behavior, depending on angle and polarization of incidence and the side of excitation. Remarkably, for incidence through the top electrode, a dependency on linear polarization and angle of incidence can be observed. We show that these peculiar characteristics can be attributed to the excitation of dispersive and non-dispersive Bragg SPPs on the metal-dielectric interface on the top electrode and compare it with incidence through the bottom electrode. Furthermore, the optical and electrical response can be controlled by the organic photoactive material, the nanostructures, the materials used for the electrodes and the epoxy encapsulation. Our device can be used as a detector, which generates a direct electrical readout and therefore enables the measuring of the angle of incidence of up to 60° or the linear polarization state of light, in a spectral region, which is determined by the active material. Our results could furthermore lead to novel organic Bragg SPP-based sensor for a number of applications.

Wave polarization and dynamic degeneracy in a chiral elastic lattice.

Project description:This paper addresses fundamental questions arising in the theory of Bloch-Floquet waves in chiral elastic lattice systems. This area has received a significant attention in the context of 'topologically protected' waveforms. Although practical applications of chiral elastic lattices are widely appreciated, especially in problems of controlling low-frequency vibrations, wave polarization and filtering, the fundamental questions of the relationship of these lattices to classical waveforms associated with longitudinal and shear waves retain a substantial scope for further development. The notion of chirality is introduced into the systematic analysis of dispersive elastic waves in a doubly-periodic lattice. Important quantitative characteristics of the dynamic response of the lattice, such as lattice flux and lattice circulation, are used in the analysis along with the novel concept of 'vortex waveforms' that characterize the dynamic response of the chiral system. We note that the continuum concepts of pressure and shear waves do not apply for waves in a lattice, especially in the case when the wavelength is comparable with the size of the elementary cell of the periodic structure. Special critical regimes are highlighted when vortex waveforms become dominant. Analytical findings are accompanied by illustrative numerical simulations.

Lsm7 phase-separated condensates trigger stress granule formation.

Project description:Stress granules (SGs) are non-membranous organelles facilitating stress responses and linking the pathology of age-related diseases. In a genome-wide imaging-based phenomic screen, we identify Pab1 co-localizing proteins under 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) induced stress in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We find that deletion of one of the Pab1 co-localizing proteins, Lsm7, leads to a significant decrease in SG formation. Under 2-DG stress, Lsm7 rapidly forms foci that assist in SG formation. The Lsm7 foci form via liquid-liquid phase separation, and the intrinsically disordered region and the hydrophobic clusters within the Lsm7 sequence are the internal driving forces in promoting Lsm7 phase separation. The dynamic Lsm7 phase-separated condensates appear to work as seeding scaffolds, promoting Pab1 demixing and subsequent SG initiation, seemingly mediated by RNA interactions. The SG initiation mechanism, via Lsm7 phase separation, identified in this work provides valuable clues for understanding the mechanisms underlying SG formation and SG-associated human diseases.

ZMYND8 mediated liquid condensates spatiotemporally decommission the latent super-enhancers during macrophage polarization.

Project description:Super-enhancers (SEs) govern macrophage polarization and function. However, the mechanism underlying the signal-dependent latent SEs remodeling in macrophages remains largely undefined. Here we show that the epigenetic reader ZMYND8 forms liquid compartments with NF-κB/p65 to silence latent SEs and restrict macrophage-mediated inflammation. Mechanistically, the fusion of ZMYND8 and p65 liquid condensates is reinforced by signal-induced acetylation of p65. Then acetylated p65 guides the ZMYND8 redistribution onto latent SEs de novo generated in polarized macrophages, and consequently, recruit LSD1 to decommission latent SEs. The liquidity characteristic of ZMYND8 is critical for its regulatory effect since mutations coagulating ZMYND8 into solid compartments disable the translocation of ZMYND8 and its suppressive function. Thereby, ZMYND8 serves as a molecular rheostat to switch off latent SEs and control the magnitude of the immune response. Meanwhile, we propose a phase separation model by which the latent SEs are fine-tuned in a spatiotemporal manner.

Bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light: polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon excitation and beam steering at normal incidence.

Project description:Integration of multiple diversified functionalities into a single, planar and ultra-compact device has become an emerging research area with fascinating possibilities for realization of very dense integration and miniaturization in photonics that requires addressing formidable challenges, particularly for operation in the visible range. Here we design, fabricate and experimentally demonstrate bifunctional gap-plasmon metasurfaces for visible light, allowing for simultaneous polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation and beam steering at normal incidence. The designed bifunctional metasurfaces, consisting of anisotropic gap-plasmon resonator arrays, produce two different linear phase gradients along the same direction for respective linear polarizations of incident light, resulting in distinctly different functionalities realized by the same metasurface. The proof-of-concept fabricated metasurfaces exhibit efficient (>25% on average) unidirectional (extinction ratio >20?dB) SPP excitation within the wavelength range of 600-650?nm when illuminated with normally incident light polarized in the direction of the phase gradient. At the same time, broadband (580-700?nm) beam steering (30.6°-37.9°) is realized when normally incident light is polarized perpendicularly to the phase gradient direction. The bifunctional metasurfaces developed in this study can enable advanced research and applications related to other distinct functionalities for photonics integration.

Evidence for lattice-polarization-enhanced field effects at the SrTiO3-based heterointerface.

Project description:Electrostatic gating provides a powerful approach to tune the conductivity of the two-dimensional electron liquid between two insulating oxides. For the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interface, such gating effect could be further enhanced by a strong lattice polarization of STO caused by simultaneous application of gate field and illumination light. Herein, by monitoring the discharging process upon removing the gate field, we give firm evidence for the occurrence of this lattice polarization at the amorphous-LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. Moreover, we find that the lattice polarization is accompanied with a large expansion of the out-of-plane lattice of STO. Photo excitation affects the polarization process by accelerating the field-induced lattice expansion. The present work demonstrates the great potential of combined stimuli in exploring emergent phenomenon at complex oxide interfaces.
