Elimination of noise in optically rephased photon echoes.

ABSTRACT: Photon echo is a fundamental tool for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Unavoidable spontaneous emission noise is generated in this process due to the strong rephasing pulse, which limits the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and represents a fundamental obstacle towards their applications in the quantum regime. Here we propose a noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system. We implement this protocol in a Eu³⁺:Y₂SiO₅ crystal to serve as an optical quantum memory. A storage fidelity of 0.952 ± 0.018 is obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coherent pulses, which is far beyond the maximal fidelity achievable using the classical measure-and-prepare strategy. In this work, the demonstrated noiseless photon-echo quantum memory features spin-wave storage, easy operation and high storage fidelity, which should be easily extended to other physical systems.

Spin noise gradient echoes.

Project description:Nuclear spin noise spectroscopy in the absence of radio frequency pulses was studied under the influence of pulsed field gradients (PFGs) on pure and mixed liquids. Under conditions where the radiation-damping-induced line broadening is smaller than the gradient-dependent inhomogeneous broadening, echo responses can be observed in difference spectra between experiments employing pulsed field gradient pairs of the same and opposite signs. These observed spin noise gradient echoes (SNGEs) were analyzed through a simple model to describe the effects of transient phenomena. Experiments performed on high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probes demonstrate how refocused spin noise behaves and how it can be exploited to determine sample properties. In bulk liquids and their mixtures, transverse relaxation times and translational diffusion constants can be determined from SNGE spectra recorded following tailored sequences of magnetic field gradient pulses.

Optically selective two-photon uncaging of glutamate at 900 nm.

Project description:We have synthesized a 7-diethylaminocoumarin (DEAC) derivative that allows wavelength-selective two-photon uncaging at 900 nm versus 720 nm. This new caging chromophore, called DEAC450, has an extended π-electron moiety at the 3-position that shifts the absorption spectrum maximum of DEAC from 375 to 450 nm. Two-photon excitation at 900 nm was more than 60-fold greater than at 720 nm. Two-photon uncaging of DEAC450-Glu at 900 nm at spine heads on pyramidal neurons in acutely isolated brain slices generated postsynaptic responses that were similar to spontaneous postsynaptic excitatory miniature currents, whereas significantly higher energies at 720 nm evoked no currents. Since many nitroaromatic caged compounds are two-photon active at 720 nm, optically selective uncaging of DEAC450-caged biomolecules at 900 nm may allow facile two-color optical interrogation of bimodal signaling pathways in living tissue with high resolution for the first time.

Noise-tolerant single photon sensitive three-dimensional imager.

Project description:Active imagers capable of reconstructing 3-dimensional (3D) scenes in the presence of strong background noise are highly desirable for many sensing and imaging applications. A key to this capability is the time-resolving photon detection that distinguishes true signal photons from the noise. To this end, quantum parametric mode sorting (QPMS) can achieve signal to noise exceeding by far what is possible with typical linear optics filters, with outstanding performance in isolating temporally and spectrally overlapping noise. Here, we report a QPMS-based 3D imager with exceptional detection sensitivity and noise tolerance. With only 0.0006 detected signal photons per pulse, we reliably reconstruct the 3D profile of an obscured scene, despite 34-fold spectral-temporally overlapping noise photons, within the 6 ps detection window (amounting to 113,000 times noise per 20 ns detection period). Our results highlight a viable approach to suppress background noise and measurement errors of single photon imager operation in high-noise environments.

Fast, noise-free memory for photon synchronization at room temperature.

Project description:Future quantum photonic networks require coherent optical memories for synchronizing quantum sources and gates of probabilistic nature. We demonstrate a fast ladder memory (FLAME) mapping the optical field onto the superposition between electronic orbitals of rubidium vapor. Using a ladder-level system of orbital transitions with nearly degenerate frequencies simultaneously enables high bandwidth, low noise, and long memory lifetime. We store and retrieve 1.7-ns-long pulses, containing 0.5 photons on average, and observe short-time external efficiency of 25%, memory lifetime (1/e) of 86 ns, and below 10-4 added noise photons. Consequently, coupling this memory to a probabilistic source would enhance the on-demand photon generation probability by a factor of 12, the highest number yet reported for a noise-free, room temperature memory. This paves the way toward the controlled production of large quantum states of light from probabilistic photon sources.

Photon echoes and two dimensional spectra of the amide I band of proteins measured by femtosecond IR - Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy are fundamental techniques in chemistry, allowing the convenient determination of bond specific chemical composition and structure. Over the last decades, ultrafast multidimensional IR approaches using sequences of femtosecond IR pulses have begun to provide a new means of gaining additional information on molecular vibrational couplings, distributions of molecular structures and ultrafast molecular structural dynamics. In this contribution, new approaches to measuring multidimensional spectra involving IR and Raman processes are presented and applied to the study of the amide I band of proteins. Rephasing of the amide I band is observed using dispersed IR-Raman photon echoes and frequency domain 2D-IR-Raman spectra are measured by use of a mid-IR pulse shaper or over a broader spectral range using a tuneable picosecond laser. A simple pulse shaping approach to performing heterodyned time-domain Fourier Transform 2D-IR-Raman spectroscopy is introduced, revealing that the 2D-IR-Raman spectra distinguish homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in the same way as the well-established methods of 2D-IR spectroscopy. Across all datasets, the unique dependence of the amide I data on the IR and Raman strengths, vibrational anharmonicities and inhomogeneous broadening provides a fascinating spectroscopic view of the amide I band.

Understanding of Collective Atom Phase Control in Modified Photon Echoes for a Near-Perfect Storage Time-Extended Quantum Memory.

Project description:A near-perfect storage time-extended photon echo-based quantum memory protocol has been analyzed by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a backward scheme in a three-level system. The backward photon echo scheme is combined with a controlled coherence conversion process via controlled Rabi flopping to a third state, where the control Rabi flopping collectively shifts the phase of the ensemble coherence. The propagation direction of photon echoes is coherently determined by the phase-matching condition between the data (quantum) and the control (classical) pulses. Herein, we discuss the classical controllability of a quantum state for both phase and propagation direction by manipulating the control pulses in both single and double rephasing photon echo schemes of a three-level system. Compared with the well-understood uses of two-level photon echoes, the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a three-level system have a critical limitation regarding the phase change when interacting with an arbitrary control pulse area.

Single-Photon Level Dispersive Fourier Transform: Ultrasensitive Characterization of Noise-Driven Nonlinear Dynamics.

Project description:Dispersive Fourier transform is a characterization technique that allows directly extracting an optical spectrum from a time domain signal, thus providing access to real-time characterization of the signal spectrum. However, these techniques suffer from sensitivity and dynamic range limitations, hampering their use for special applications in, e.g., high-contrast characterizations and sensing. Here, we report on a novel approach to dispersive Fourier transform-based characterization using single-photon detectors. In particular, we experimentally develop this approach by leveraging mutual information analysis for signal processing and hold a performance comparison with standard dispersive Fourier transform detection and statistical tools. We apply the comparison to the analysis of noise-driven nonlinear dynamics arising from well-known modulation instability processes. We demonstrate that with this dispersive Fourier transform approach, mutual information metrics allow for successfully gaining insight into the fluctuations associated with modulation instability-induced spectral broadening, providing qualitatively similar signatures compared to ultrafast photodetector-based dispersive Fourier transform but with improved signal quality and spectral resolution (down to 53 pm). The technique presents an intrinsically unlimited dynamic range and is extremely sensitive, with a sensitivity reaching below the femtowatt (typically 4 orders of magnitude better than ultrafast dispersive Fourier transform detection). We show that this method can not only be implemented to gain insight into noise-driven (spontaneous) frequency conversion processes but also be leveraged to characterize incoherent dynamics seeded by weak coherent optical fields.
