Dipodal Tetraamide Derivatives of 1,10-Diaza-18-Crown-6 and Alkylmalonic Acids-Synthesis and Use as Ionophores in Ion Selective Membrane Electrodes.

ABSTRACT: Novel dipodal derivatives of an 18-membered diaza-crown ether with two diamide chains featuring methylmalonic or butylmalonic acid residues were obtained and tested as ionophores in ion-selective plasticized membrane electrodes. The objective of the study was to identify measurement conditions which ensure the most favorable performance for magnesium ion-selective electrodes. The relationship between the molar lipophilic anion salt-to-ionophore ratio and selectivity of electrodes was examined. The best result was obtained for the conventional electrode containing Mg2 ionophore. Calculated selectivity coefficients were as follows: logKMg/Ca = -2.77, logKMg/Na = -3.46 and logKMg.K = -2.24 (SSM, 1M).

Silicon-Bridged Bis(12-crown-4) Ethers as Ionophores for Sodium Ion-Selective Electrodes.

Project description:A new Na+ ionophore with two 12-crown-4 moieties on silicon atoms and hydrophobic hydrocarbon groups on silicon atoms has been synthesized. The silicon-bridged bis(12-crown-4)s were easily obtained in high yield by simply mixing dichlorodiorganosilane and 2-hydroxymethyl-12-crown-4 under room temperature and nitrogen atmosphere. Seven compounds with different hydrocarbon substituents were synthesized. To investigate their properties as ionophores, PVC membrane-type ion-selective electrodes incorporating them were prepared, and the ion selectivity coefficients were determined. The typical selectivity sequence is Na+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+ > NH4+ > Li+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > H+. The magnitude of selectivity depends on the structures of hydrocarbon substituents on the silicon atoms. The compound with two 2-ethylhexyl groups has particularly good Na+ selectivity, and the performance of the electrode is equal to or better than that of an electrode using a commercially available Na+ ionophore, malonate-bridged bis(12-crown-4). The electrode also showed better-aging stability than that of another known Na+ ionophore, tetraethyl 4-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-O,O',O″,O‴-tetraacetate, indicating high utility.

Diacylated 1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 as an Alternative Template for Fluorescent Sensors of Calcium Ions.

Project description:The performance of many known fluorescent sensors for Ca2+ is pH-dependent. We set out to address this by preparing a novel calcium sensor based on diacylated 1,10-diaza-18-crown-6 and containing no basic centres. The sensor is sensitive to sub-millimolar levels of Ca2+ and partially tolerant of an aqueous environment. However, it suffers from a lack of selectivity over some other divalent cations, and retained pH sensitivity in the acidic range. The relations between these properties and the sensor's structure are discussed.

Acridino-Diaza-20-Crown-6 Ethers: New Macrocyclic Hosts for Optochemical Metal Ion Sensing.

Project description:Acridino-diaza-20-crown-6 ether derivatives as new turn-on type fluorescent chemosensors with an excellent functionality and photophysical properties have been designed and synthesized for metal ion-selective optochemical sensing applications. Spectroscopic studies revealed that in an acetonitrile-based semi-aqueous medium, the sensor molecules exhibited a remarkable fluorescence enhancement with high sensitivity only toward Zn2+, Al3+ and Bi3+, among 23 different metal ions. Studies on complexation showed a great coordinating ability of logK > 4.7 with a 1:1 complex stoichiometry in each case. The detection limits were found to be from 59 nM to micromoles. The new ionophores enabled an optical response without being affected either by the pH in the range of 5.5-7.5, or the presence of various anions or competing metal ions. Varying the N-substituents of the new host-backbone provides diverse opportunities in both immobilization and practical applications without influencing the molecular recognition abilities.

Synthesis and Characterization of Macrocyclic Polyether N,N'-Diallyl-7,16-diaza-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-dibenzo-18-crown-6.

Project description:In this study an efficient and direct production procedure for a macrocyclic polyether N,N'-diallyl-7,16-diaza-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-dibenzo-18-crown-6 from the reaction of catechol and N,N-bis(2-chloroethyl)prop-2-en-1-amine in n-butanol in the presence of a strong base is reported. The synthesis involves a two-step addition of sodium hydroxide to enhance the cyclization process, and at the end of the reaction, the reaction mixture is neutralized and the solvent replaced with water in-situ through distillation to afford a relatively pure precipitate that is easily recrystallized from acetone. The yield of the macrocycle was 36%-45% and could be scaled-up to one-mole quantities. The structure and purity of this compound was verified on the basis of elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, ¹H-, (13)C-NMR, 2D-NMR, mass spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. The white crystalline compound has a sharp melting point of 124 °C and a crystallization temperature of 81.4 °C determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Our motivation behind the synthesis of the bibracchial lariat azacrown polyether ligand was to examine its possible applications in ion-selective polymer-supported materials.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, poly[triaquatetra-μ-cyanido-tetracyanidobis-(1,4,10,13-tetra-oxa-7,16-diaza-cyclo-octa-deca-ne)di-barium(II)tetra-gold(I)], [Au(4)Ba(2)(CN)(8)(C(12)H(26)N(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(3)](n), displays O-H⋯N hydrogen bonding between water molecules and cyano ligands and an unusual pattern of aurophilic inter-actions that yields a monomer, dimer, and trimer of [Au(CN)(2)](-) within the same crystal structure. In two of the five Au positions, the atom resides on a center of inversion. The overall arrangement is that of a coordination polymer assisted by aurophilic and hydrogen-bonded inter-actions.

The cation and anion reside at an inter-section of crystallographic twofold and threefold axes. The carbon atoms in the cation are disordered over two positions in a 3:2 ratio, and the anion is equally disordered over two positions. The geometries of the cation and anion are typical. The compound packs in alternating sheets of discrete cations and anions stacked along the c axis, separated by a distance equal to one-sixth the length of the c axis.

The five-membered chelate ring is in a gauche form, while the two six-membered chelate rings are in chair conformations. The crystal structure is stabilized by several hydrogen bonds.

Synthesis and evaluation of lanthanide ion DOTA-tetraamide complexes bearing peripheral hydroxyl groups.

Project description:The use of lanthanide-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging has become an integral component of this important diagnostic modality. These inert chelates typically possess high thermodynamic stability constants that serve as a predictor for in vivo stability and low toxicity. Recently, a new class of contrast agents was reported having a significantly lower degree of thermodynamic stability while exhibiting biodistribution profiles indicative of high stability under biological conditions. These observations are suggestive that the nature of contrast agent stability is also dependent upon the kinetics of complex dissociation, a feature of potential importance when contemplating the design of new chelates for in vivo use. We present a study of the kinetics of acid-catalyzed dissociation, thermodynamic stability, serum stability, and biodistribution of a series of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA)-tetraamide complexes that have been substituted with peripheral hydroxyl groups. The data indicate that these nontraditional contrast agents exhibit in vivo stability comparable to that of agents with much higher log K (ML) values, demonstrating the important contribution of kinetic inertness.
